How to Secure Smart Speakers and Voice Assistants Against Unauthorized Purchases

By TheFinanceBase Team 11 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most reliable way to stop an unwanted voice order is to change the assistant’s purchase authorization setting: turn voice purchasing off when nobody needs it, or require a spoken confirmation code when the household wants to keep the feature. Then protect the account that controls the speaker with a unique password and multi-factor authentication, and apply child controls to the specific account and device. Microphone mute, recording deletion, and router security improve privacy or general smart-home security, but they do not replace payment authorization controls.

Start with the control that actually blocks a charge

Voice assistants sit between a spoken command and a shopping account. A speaker can recognize a wake word, interpret a request, and submit an order using payment details already stored in the linked account. Preventing an unauthorized purchase therefore requires changing the account or assistant’s purchase rule—not adding a physical accessory to the speaker.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Use this order of priority:

  1. Disable voice purchasing if the household does not need to order by voice.
  2. Require a confirmation code if voice ordering is useful and the platform supports one.
  3. Apply child-specific restrictions to each supervised child account and shared device.
  4. Secure the controlling account with a strong, unique password and multi-factor authentication where available.
  5. Check third-party skills, digital goods, and regional limits because the main purchase setting may not cover every transaction path.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) summarizes the core choice as adding a PIN or turning off voice ordering so visitors or children cannot use voice commands to buy things. No official source cited for this guide provides a prevalence or success-rate statistic, so treat these settings as practical controls rather than a guaranteed measure of risk.

Compare the available protections

Control What it does Who it can cover Important boundary
Voice purchasing off Prevents the assistant’s supported voice-ordering flow from authorizing purchases. Usually the linked account or device configuration. Does not necessarily stop purchases made through a third-party skill with payment details supplied directly to that developer.
Spoken confirmation code Requires a four-digit code before a supported voice purchase is completed. People who know the code can still authorize orders. Coverage varies by purchase type; do not assume every digital or developer-billed transaction uses the code.
Child controls Restrict actions available to a supervised child account. Only enrolled child accounts and the devices configured for them. Not a universal switch for every adult account or every speaker.
Recognized-voice controls Uses voice recognition to apply different purchase behavior to recognized household members. Availability depends on platform, region, and device. Amazon’s cited support information excludes several digital purchase categories.
Account password and multi-factor authentication Reduces the chance that someone who is not physically near the speaker can take over the shopping account. The underlying assistant or retailer account. Does not stop an authorized person who can use the speaker and satisfy its purchase rule.
Microphone mute, recording deletion, and router security Improve privacy and broader connected-device security. The device, account, or home network. These measures do not directly approve or block an order.

Alexa: turn off purchasing or require a code

Amazon states that voice purchasing is enabled by default for Alexa. The exact menu names can change by country or app version, so search the Alexa app for Voice Purchasing if a label is different from the paths below.

Option 1: disable voice purchasing completely

  1. Open the Alexa app.
  2. Select More.
  3. Open Settings.
  4. Choose Account Management.
  5. Select Voice Purchasing.
  6. Under Purchase Controls, choose No one.

This is the clearest choice when children, guests, or shared spaces make accidental commands a concern and nobody needs hands-free ordering. You can still shop through the normal Amazon website or app; the change targets the voice-ordering route described by the setting.

Option 2: keep voice ordering but require a four-digit code

  1. Open the Alexa app and select More.
  2. Go to Settings, then Account Settings.
  3. Open Voice Purchasing.
  4. Choose Purchase Confirmation, then Manage.
  5. Select Voice code and create a four-digit code.

Amazon describes this as a spoken confirmation code. Do not say that it covers every possible purchase: the code applies to the supported Alexa purchase flow, and anyone who hears or learns it may be able to authorize an order.

Do not speak the code where children or visitors can easily overhear it. If you believe the code has been disclosed, return to the same setting and replace it, or turn voice purchasing off.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review kid-skill and child-specific settings

Amazon documents separate controls for purchases associated with kid skills. Check these settings in addition to the main voice-purchasing rule. A household can have more than one Alexa device, profile, or linked account, so verify the configuration on the devices children actually use rather than assuming one change applies everywhere.

Understand recognized-voice limitations

Amazon also documents a recognized Alexa Voice ID setting for purchases. The cited support page is Amazon UK support, so availability and wording should be checked for your country before relying on it. The same page says recognized-voice controls exclude digital purchases such as Kindle Books, Audible, Prime Video, Alexa Skills, and Amazon Pay. That means voice recognition should be treated as an additional filter, not a universal replacement for turning purchases off or requiring a code.

Check third-party skill billing

Amazon’s Alexa FAQ warns that some skills let people buy directly from the skill developer using payment details supplied to that developer. Amazon’s standard voice-purchasing settings may not apply to those transactions. Review every skill that can sell subscriptions, goods, tickets, or other paid services, then inspect its linked account, stored payment method, approval requirements, and spending controls. If the skill has no suitable control, remove the skill or disconnect its account from the speaker.

Google Assistant: use supervised child accounts and Voice Match

Google’s Safety Center describes a child-focused setup rather than a universal purchase-off switch for every Google Assistant user. Parents can use Family Link limits and link a child’s account to a shared device through Voice Match.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Set up the child’s Google account under Family Link.
  2. Enroll the child’s voice with Voice Match on the shared Assistant device, following Google’s current in-app prompts.
  3. Confirm that the child is signed in on the device they use.
  4. Review the eligible family actions and restrictions shown for that supervised account.
  5. Test a purchase request from the child’s voice profile and confirm that the action is refused or restricted as Google describes.

Google says enrolled children are limited to eligible family actions and prevented from some actions, including purchases through Assistant. The protection is scoped to the supervised-child configuration; it does not establish that every adult profile, speaker, or transaction has a single purchase-off switch. Check each shared device and account separately after changing Family Link or Voice Match settings.

Apple devices: do not assume Screen Time covers HomePod voice orders

Apple’s cited Screen Time guidance covers App Store and other Apple service purchases on iPhone and iPad. It lets a parent block in-app purchases, require a password, and use Ask to Buy in eligible family situations.

  1. On the relevant iPhone or iPad, open Settings.
  2. Choose Screen Time and select the family member or device.
  3. Open the purchase restrictions area and block in-app purchases or require a password, as appropriate.
  4. For eligible family setups, enable Ask to Buy so a parent approves qualifying requests.

Those instructions concern iPhone and iPad transactions. The cited Apple material does not specifically document HomePod voice-purchase settings, so do not infer that an iPhone or iPad restriction blocks every purchase initiated through a HomePod. Check Apple’s current settings for the exact device, Apple Account, and transaction path in your home.

Secure the account behind the speaker

A purchase control cannot protect an account that an attacker has taken over. The FTC recommends a strong password for the assistant’s controlling account, multi-factor authentication where available, and a review of connected accounts and permissions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use a long, unique password that is not reused for email, banking, or social media.
  • Turn on multi-factor authentication for the assistant, retailer, and relevant app-store accounts.
  • Review signed-in devices and active sessions; remove devices or sessions you no longer recognize.
  • Audit connected shopping accounts, payment methods, subscriptions, and third-party skills.
  • Remove old household members, former guests, or integrations that no longer need access.
  • Protect the email account used for password resets with its own unique password and multi-factor authentication.

These steps address remote account takeover. They do not replace the local purchase rule: a family member who is legitimately signed in can still use whatever authorization the speaker allows.

Separate payment authorization from privacy and network controls

Microphone mute

A physical mute button or listening control can reduce unintended wake-ups and recording exposure. It does not approve or reject an order once voice purchasing is otherwise authorized. Use it when the room is occupied by guests, during sensitive conversations, or whenever the assistant is not needed.

Recording retention and deletion

The FTC notes that assistants may mishear users, activate unexpectedly, and send recordings to manufacturer servers. Review the assistant’s recording-retention and deletion controls, and remove stored recordings according to the platform’s current options. This limits privacy exposure; it is not a payment block.

Home-router security

The FTC recommends securing the home router because it is the hub for connected devices. Install available firmware updates, replace the router’s default administrator password, use modern Wi-Fi encryption, and remove unknown devices from the network. A safer router helps protect the smart home generally, but it does not enforce a purchase PIN or determine whether a voice order is authorized.

Test the settings before trusting them

After changing a control, test the exact path a child or guest might use. Testing should not create a real charge.

  1. Confirm the app shows voice purchasing as off, or that a confirmation code is required.
  2. Ask for a non-purchase action to verify the intended profile and device are active.
  3. Use the platform’s supported shopping preview, cart, or cancellation flow if available; stop before final confirmation.
  4. Check another speaker in the home, especially one assigned to a different room or account.
  5. Review the account’s order history and notifications for unexpected activity.
  6. Repeat the check after app updates, household-account changes, or adding a new skill.

Keep the confirmation code private, and explain to children that they must ask an adult rather than guess commands or codes.

What to do when an unauthorized order still appears

The order came through the standard assistant marketplace

  • Change the voice-purchasing setting immediately to off or replace the confirmation code.
  • Change the linked account password and revoke unfamiliar sessions.
  • Enable multi-factor authentication if it was not already active.
  • Review the assistant’s order history, payment methods, and connected devices.
  • Contact the platform’s support and follow its current cancellation, return, or refund process.

The order came through a third-party skill or developer

  • Identify the skill or service shown on the receipt.
  • Sign in to that developer’s account and change its password.
  • Remove stored payment details or require approval inside the developer’s service, if offered.
  • Disconnect or delete the skill if it cannot provide an acceptable spending control.
  • Contact the developer and the payment provider using the transaction details.

This branch matters because Amazon says some developer-billed purchases may use payment details supplied directly to the developer and may not be covered by Alexa’s voice-purchasing settings.

The purchase was digital content

Check whether the platform excludes digital goods from its voice or recognized-voice rule. Amazon’s cited Voice ID guidance specifically lists Kindle Books, Audible, Prime Video, Alexa Skills, and Amazon Pay among excluded digital categories. Use the relevant digital-content account’s password, family approval, and purchase restrictions as an additional layer.

  • Voice purchasing is off by default unless an adult has a specific reason to use it.
  • If it remains on, only adults know the confirmation code.
  • Children use supervised accounts and Voice Match or the platform’s equivalent restrictions.
  • Guests do not receive account passwords, codes, or access to a linked shopping profile.
  • Every new skill, subscription, or payment integration is reviewed before it is connected.
  • Monthly account reviews check orders, payment methods, sessions, and connected devices.

This policy turns a one-time app change into an ongoing spending-control process, which is especially important in homes with several speakers, profiles, or payment accounts.

When each approach is the right choice

Household situation Recommended configuration Why
No one needs to shop by voice Turn voice purchasing off on every relevant account and device. It removes the supported voice-ordering path rather than relying on secrecy.
Adults use voice ordering occasionally Keep it enabled with a private four-digit confirmation code, then audit third-party skills. Preserves convenience while adding a deliberate confirmation step.
Children share a speaker Use Family Link and Voice Match where supported, or the platform’s child and kid-skill controls; keep the main purchase rule restrictive. Child protections are account- and device-specific.
Many guests use the home Disable voice purchasing and use the physical microphone mute when the assistant is not needed. Visitors should not need to know a code or account details.
Frequent digital-content purchases Review each digital service’s own password, family approval, and purchase controls. Some digital categories may be excluded from voice-recognition or confirmation settings.
Suspicious account activity Change passwords, enable multi-factor authentication, revoke sessions, remove unknown integrations, and contact the platform. Settings alone cannot repair a compromised account.

Key limitations to remember

  • There is no single hardware add-on documented by the cited guidance that blocks unauthorized voice purchases across Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple devices.
  • A purchase code is an authorization factor, not a guarantee: someone who knows it may be able to buy, and some transaction types may bypass it.
  • Child restrictions depend on enrollment, Voice Match, account assignment, device configuration, and platform availability.
  • Amazon’s recognized-voice purchase information comes from UK support documentation; do not assume identical availability in another country.
  • Apple’s cited Screen Time controls cover iPhone and iPad purchases and do not, by themselves, establish a HomePod voice-purchase block.
  • Router hardening, microphone mute, and recording deletion protect privacy or the wider network, not payment authorization.

Official guidance used for the settings

The FTC consumer guidance covers account passwords, multi-factor authentication, purchase PINs or disabling voice ordering, router security, recording controls, and physical mute controls. Amazon’s Alexa FAQ and purchase-code support describe default voice-purchasing behavior, the relevant app paths, kid-skill controls, and the four-digit code. Amazon UK support documents recognized voices and excluded digital purchases. Google Safety Center documentation covers Family Link and Voice Match restrictions for enrolled children. Apple Support documents Screen Time purchase restrictions and Ask to Buy for iPhone and iPad. Platform labels and availability can change, so use the current settings shown for your region and device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is muting the smart speaker enough to stop unauthorized purchases?

No. Mute reduces listening and accidental activation, but it does not change the account’s purchase authorization. Turn voice purchasing off or require the platform’s confirmation code.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a voice-purchase PIN protect purchases made through every skill?

Not necessarily. Amazon says some skills process payment directly through the developer with payment details supplied to that developer, outside the standard voice-purchasing controls.

Do Apple Screen Time restrictions automatically block HomePod purchases?

The cited Apple guidance covers purchases on iPhone and iPad and does not specifically document a HomePod voice-purchase block. Check the current settings for the exact Apple device and account involved.

What should I do if I do not recognize an order?

Change the voice-purchasing rule or code, secure the linked account with a new password and multi-factor authentication, revoke unfamiliar sessions, inspect connected skills and payment methods, and contact the platform or developer using the transaction details.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
