Your Secret Recovery Phrase (SRP) controls wallet funds; it is not the same thing as a Farcaster recovery address or a signer key. Set the recovery address before you need it, store the SRP offline, and never type it into a website or give it to anyone claiming to provide support.
What you are actually protecting
A Farcaster account is not a single password-controlled object. The protocol separates a durable Farcaster ID (FID), the custody address that controls ownership of that identity, and signer keys that authorize messages such as casts. Your wallet may hold the custody address, but the wallet’s recovery phrase and Farcaster’s identity-recovery mechanism solve different problems.

| Layer | What it controls | What recovery protects |
|---|---|---|
| Farcaster ID (FID) | Your durable protocol identity, including its relationship to names and account data. | A recovery-address transfer can move control of the identity to a new custody address after the delay period. |
| Custody address | The account-control layer that owns the FID. | Control can be transferred through the Farcaster recovery process, provided the recovery address is configured and the transfer is not canceled. |
| Signer key | Authorizes messages from a client, such as posting or other account actions. | A lost or revoked signer does not necessarily mean the FID or wallet is lost; you can manage signers through the client’s documented account controls. |
| Wallet and Secret Recovery Phrase | The wallet accounts derived from the phrase, including tokens and the address that may be your Farcaster custody address. | Restoring the phrase recreates wallet access. Whoever obtains the phrase can control the wallet’s assets. |
This distinction matters during an emergency. Recovering a Farcaster identity does not recreate a wallet’s private keys or return tokens held at the old wallet address. Conversely, restoring a wallet on a new phone does not automatically repair a missing or incorrectly configured Farcaster recovery address.

Farcaster’s documented recovery system is intentionally delayed. A recovery address can request a transfer of the FID to a new custody address. The current custody address can cancel that request. If it does not cancel the request within three days, the recovery address can complete the transfer. This delay gives the legitimate owner time to notice and stop an unauthorized request.
#1 Best Overall
The recovery address can be another address in your wallet, a multisig controlled with trusted people, or a third-party recovery service. You can change the recovery address later. Whichever option you choose, protect it as seriously as the custody address: anyone who controls the recovery address may be able to initiate the delayed transfer.
The three-day period is a protocol rule described in Farcaster’s project documentation. It is not an instant “forgot password” reset, so configuring recovery after losing a phone may leave you waiting while you regain control.
Set a recovery address before an incident
Client interfaces change, so the exact menu wording can differ. Use the official Farcaster client you already trust and look for account, custody, or recovery settings. Do not follow a recovery link sent by an unsolicited message.

- Open the official client. Update it from the operating system’s official app store before changing security settings.
- Find the custody and recovery controls. Confirm that you are viewing the account containing the intended FID, not a different profile or a temporary signer.
- Identify the current custody address. Copy or display the complete address and compare it character-by-character with a second trusted screen or a record you made earlier.
- Choose the recovery address. Use an address you control, a carefully governed multisig, or a recovery service whose procedures and trust assumptions you understand.
- Verify the complete address before signing. Check the first and last characters as well as the entire address on a trusted display. A look-alike address can defeat an otherwise correct procedure.
- Confirm the change with the wallet. Read the transaction or signature request. Reject it if the destination, network, or requested permission is unexpected.
- Record the configuration. Note the recovery address and the date it was set in a private record. Keep that record separate from your wallet’s recovery phrase.
- Test your plan without initiating a transfer. Make sure you know which account would cancel a request and where the client would display a pending recovery action.
Re-check the setting after moving the FID to a new custody wallet. Farcaster documentation notes that transferring the asset to a new custody address can unset the recovery address. A wallet migration is therefore incomplete until you verify recovery again and record the new date.
Protect the Secret Recovery Phrase
The Secret Recovery Phrase, also called a seed phrase, is generated when a wallet is created. It derives the wallet accounts that hold tokens and restores those accounts on another device. MetaMask’s official guidance summarizes the risk plainly: “Your SRP is the foundation of your wallet; your password’s importance depends on your setup.” It also says, “Anyone who can access your SRP can control your funds,” and “MetaMask cannot recover your wallet for you.” The same self-custody principle applies when another wallet application holds the phrase.
What never belongs in a phrase workflow
- Do not send the phrase to support, a friend, a moderator, or a person who says they are fixing a failed transaction.
- Do not enter it into a website, online form, cloud note, email draft, chat, QR-code generator, or unfamiliar wallet client.
- Do not photograph or screenshot it if your device synchronizes images automatically.
- Do not paste it into a clipboard that is shared with another computer or phone.
- Do not type it into a listing, warranty form, or “verification” page when buying storage equipment.
Make an offline, durable backup
Write the words in the exact order supplied by the wallet and verify every spelling. Paper is easy to create but can be destroyed by water, fire, fading, or accidental disposal. A steel or fire-resistant mnemonic backup plate provides a more durable physical copy. It is a practical storage method, not an endorsement of any particular manufacturer. Buy through a reputable marketplace, inspect the materials and instructions, and prepare the backup in a private setting away from cameras and other people.
Rank #3
Keep the backup in a private, access-controlled location. A second geographically separate copy can protect against a single fire, flood, or burglary, but it increases the number of places that must be secured. Do not store both the phrase and the recovery-address record together: a person who finds one location should not automatically obtain every recovery path.
Use app backups as an additional route, not a substitute
Some Farcaster onboarding or wallet flows offer a mobile key-manager backup. Such a backup can reduce the chance of losing access when a phone fails, but it does not make exposing the phrase safe. Treat an app backup as an additional recovery route whose security depends on the provider, your account credentials, and the device. Keep the offline phrase backup anyway, and review exactly what the backup contains before enabling it.
Secure the phone and computer that can sign
Offline phrase storage protects the master secret, while device security protects the signer keys and wallet session that you use every day. Use both; one does not replace the other.

- Use a long device passcode and enable biometrics backed by that passcode.
- Install operating-system, browser, wallet, and Farcaster-client updates from official sources.
- Download apps only after checking the publisher, spelling, and domain. A sponsored or copied listing can be malicious.
- Use reputable malware protection on computers used for signing or for handling wallet information.
- Disable screenshots, clipboard syncing, and cloud backups for phrase material where the operating system allows it.
- Keep the phone or computer physically private when a transaction is displayed. Confirm the destination and permissions on the device you trust, not only in a browser tab.
- Periodically review connected applications and signer permissions. Remove signers and connections you no longer use.
- Keep the durable phrase backup in a private location with controlled access, and consider a separate location for a second copy.
Support staff should never need your phrase. If a person asks for it, stop communicating, close the page, and use the client’s independently located support documentation instead.
Use Farcaster on another device without exposing custody credentials
Copying an Ethereum externally owned account (EOA) seed phrase into every new app creates a large attack surface. Farcaster’s Auth Addresses proposal introduces an Ethereum-address key type that can authenticate on behalf of a Farcaster user. Its goal is secure multi-client access for smart wallets or multiple devices without copying custody credentials. The proposal is not a guarantee that every current client supports the feature.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBefore adding a second device
- Check the client’s own documentation for support of Auth Addresses, scoped signatures, or an explicitly documented signer flow.
- Prefer adding a limited signer or authentication method over importing the custody wallet into an unfamiliar application.
- Read every permission request. A request to sign a cast is different from a request to export keys or approve an unrestricted transaction.
- Record which device and signer were added so you can remove them later.
If the client does not document multi-device support
Do not import the custody phrase merely to read or post. Use the existing trusted device until you can verify a supported signer or authentication method. If you decide that a wallet must be restored, use the phrase only in the official wallet application on a trusted, updated device, and then check the custody and recovery settings again.

What to do when a phone or wallet is lost
| Situation | Immediate priority | What it does not solve automatically |
|---|---|---|
| Phone lost, phrase safely stored | Use a trusted replacement device and restore the wallet only through the official wallet flow. Change device locks and revoke unused signers or sessions. | It does not prove that Farcaster’s recovery address is still configured, especially after a custody-wallet move. |
| Phone lost, no phrase, recovery address available | Use the Farcaster recovery process to request a transfer to a new custody address and monitor the three-day cancellation window. | It does not recover tokens held in the old wallet unless you separately regain that wallet. |
| Wallet application deleted, phrase available | Reinstall the official application, restore the wallet, and verify the account addresses before signing anything. | It does not automatically add the restored account as Farcaster custody or restore signers in every client. |
| Phrase exposed or possibly copied | Assume compromise. On a trusted device, create a new wallet, move assets to it, and then update Farcaster custody and recovery settings through the documented client flow. | Changing the wallet password or deleting the app does not invalidate a phrase that someone already obtained. |
| Neither phrase nor recovery path available | Contact only the official client or protocol documentation through an independently verified channel and determine which signers or devices remain active. | No provider can recreate a missing self-custody phrase. The absence of a configured recovery address may leave the FID without a practical recovery route. |
If a phrase may have been exposed, act before investigating who saw it. Transfer assets to a newly generated wallet using a trusted device, then update the Farcaster custody address and recovery address. Review approvals and connected applications as part of the migration. Do not wait for a person claiming to be “support” to confirm the breach or to tell you where to send funds.
How to choose a recovery and phrase-storage method
There is no universally best arrangement. Choose based on the value at risk, the number of people who must participate, and your ability to keep records current.
| Method | Strength | Trade-off or failure mode | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper kept privately | Simple, offline, and inexpensive to create. | Can burn, tear, fade, or be discarded by mistake. | Is the location dry, private, and protected from unauthorized access? |
| Steel or fire-resistant plate | More resistant to fire and water than ordinary paper. | Still discoverable if stored openly; assembly errors can make a word unreadable. | Can you verify word order and spelling, and can you create a second secure copy? |
| Digital or cloud note | Easy to duplicate and retrieve. | Internet-connected exposure, synchronization, screenshots, and account takeover can reveal the phrase. | Why would this need to be online when the phrase is a master secret? |
| Single-person recovery address | Fast to understand and independent of another person. | Loss or compromise of that wallet can remove the intended recovery path. | Is the address on a separate wallet and do you monitor it? |
| Trusted multisig recovery address | Reduces dependence on one key holder. | Requires reliable participants, clear procedures, and coordination during the three-day window. | Who can approve, how are signers replaced, and how will everyone detect a request? |
| Third-party recovery service | May provide an organized operational process. | Adds trust, availability, and policy risks outside your own wallets. | What does the service control, how is identity verified, and what happens if it closes? |
For every option, evaluate durability against fire and water, resistance to casual discovery, ease of checking word order, the ability to make a second backup, and whether the phrase ever touches an internet-connected device. For custody arrangements, also evaluate independence from one device, multi-device support, signer isolation, transaction-confirmation clarity, and what happens if the primary phone disappears.
A maintenance routine that prevents avoidable loss
After initial setup
- Confirm the FID, custody address, signer list, and recovery address from a trusted client.
- Verify that the phrase backup is complete, legible, and stored offline.
- Record the recovery address and configuration date separately from the phrase.
- Write down which devices are authorized and how to revoke an unused signer.
After any wallet or device migration
- Compare the restored wallet addresses with your prior record before approving transactions.
- Check whether moving custody unset the Farcaster recovery address.
- Remove old signers, sessions, and connected applications that are no longer needed.
- Confirm that the new device has a strong lock, current software, and no phrase material in screenshots or synchronized notes.
When a recovery request appears
- Stop signing unrelated transactions until you understand the request.
- Verify the destination address independently.
- If the request is unauthorized and you still control the custody address, cancel it within the three-day window.
- If it is legitimate, monitor the delay and complete the transfer only through the documented Farcaster flow.
Farcaster identity recovery and wallet-fund recovery should be documented as two separate plans. The first depends on the configured recovery address and the delayed protocol transfer. The second depends on the wallet’s Secret Recovery Phrase and the security of every device that can use it.
