Binance.US requires every customer to protect an account with at least one two-factor authentication (2FA) method. After signing in, open Security, find the 2-Factor Authentication (2FA) controls, and set up either SMS Authentication or Google Authenticator. SMS is required during new-account registration, but you can change that method or add an authenticator app after registration.
For stronger protection, Binance.US recommends Google Authenticator. Compatible apps that generate six-digit time-based one-time passwords (TOTP) from a 16-digit binding key can also work when you choose the Google Authenticator option. The steps below cover setup, security hardening, code failures, SMS delivery problems, and the identity-verified process for replacing a lost 2FA device.

What 2FA protects on Binance.US
A password is one proof of identity. Two-factor authentication adds a second proof, normally something delivered to your phone or generated by an authenticator app. Binance.US describes 2FA as “a second layer of security beyond your password.” If someone obtains your password, the second factor can still block sign-in and sensitive actions.
Binance.US requires at least one active 2FA method on every customer account. The available setup choices shown in the account’s Security area are SMS Authentication and Google Authenticator. During registration, SMS 2FA is required. Once the account exists, the method can be changed, or another method can be added so you have more than one way to verify.

Official sources do not publish a Binance.US-specific percentage showing how often 2FA prevents account compromise. The practical benefit is that an attacker needs more than your password; the exact level of protection depends on the method you choose, your phone-number security, your email account, and how carefully you protect the authenticator setup key.
Prepare before changing the security settings
Have the following ready before you start. Preparing first reduces the chance of locking yourself out midway through setup.
- Your current password. Use a long, unique password that is not reused on email, social-media, or other financial accounts.
- Access to the email address on the Binance.US account. The current interface may request an email confirmation during setup or recovery.
- A working mobile number if you are enabling SMS or are still using the SMS method required at registration.
- An authenticator app if you want app-based codes. Binance.US recommends Google Authenticator. Its FAQ says apps that produce six-digit TOTP codes and use a 16-digit key can work with the Google Authenticator option; named examples include Authy, Okta Verify, Microsoft Authenticator, Duo, and 2FAS.
- A secure place for the 16-digit binding key. Treat it like a credential. Do not paste it into a public note, send it in chat, or photograph it where other people or unprotected cloud backups can reach it.
Before entering credentials, verify that the address starts with https://www.binance.us/login. Phishing pages often use a domain that differs by only a character or an extra word. Do not continue if the address is different, if the browser warns about the connection, or if a message asks you to disclose your password or 2FA code to a person.

The exact prompts can vary as Binance.US updates its interface. The current account path is sign in → Security → 2-Factor Authentication (2FA). Complete each password, SMS, authenticator, email, or identity prompt displayed for your account.
Set up SMS Authentication
- Sign in through the verified Binance.US login address.
- Open Security from your account controls.
- Locate 2-Factor Authentication (2FA) and select SMS Authentication.
- Confirm the phone number shown. Correct an inaccurate number before requesting a code.
- Request the SMS code and enter it in the verification field before it expires.
- Complete any additional password or email confirmation requested by the screen, then verify that SMS appears as an enabled method.
SMS is convenient when your phone number is available, but it depends on the mobile carrier and exposes the account to the security of that number. A phone-number takeover, loss of cellular service, or a blocked message can interrupt verification. For that reason, Binance.US recommends considering an authenticator app and, where practical, enabling more than one method.

Set up Google Authenticator or a compatible TOTP app
- Open Security and select the Google Authenticator option under the 2FA controls.
- Install or open Google Authenticator, or another app that supports six-digit TOTP codes and a 16-digit key. The Binance.US FAQ specifically names Authy, Okta Verify, Microsoft Authenticator, Duo, and 2FAS as examples that can work with this option.
- Use the authenticator app to scan the QR code displayed by Binance.US, or enter the displayed 16-digit key manually if scanning is unavailable.
- Store the 16-digit key in a secure, private location before leaving the setup screen. Anyone who obtains it may be able to generate the same codes.
- Wait for the app to display a six-digit code, enter that code in Binance.US, and complete any password, SMS, email, or identity check requested.
- Confirm that the authenticator method is shown as enabled in Security. Keep the app on the device you normally carry and protect that device with its own screen lock.
An authenticator code is generated from the app and its time-based key rather than delivered as a text message. That makes it useful when traveling without dependable SMS service, but losing the phone or the key creates a recovery event, so keep your recovery information protected and current.
SMS versus an authenticator app
Both methods satisfy the requirement for at least one 2FA factor. The better choice depends on how you travel, how reliable your phone service is, and how you plan to recover access after a device problem.

You do not have to treat the choice as permanent. Binance.US says the method can be changed or an additional method added after registration. If you enable a second method, test that you can complete verification with it before relying on it as your only fallback.
Harden the account after 2FA is enabled
2FA is one control, not a substitute for secure account habits. Complete these protections in the Security area or through the account controls Binance.US provides.
Use a private password
Choose a strong password that is unique to Binance.US. Do not disclose it to anyone claiming to be support. Binance.US representatives will not ask for your password or for a 2FA code. If you think either credential has been exposed, change the password through the account’s security controls and investigate the account immediately.

Create an anti-phishing code
Set an anti-phishing code so legitimate Binance.US notification emails can be distinguished from messages that imitate them. A message that lacks your expected code, asks for your password or 2FA code, or sends you to a different domain should be treated as suspicious. Navigate to the account yourself rather than following an unexpected email link.

Open device-management controls and look for phones, browsers, or sessions you do not recognize. Remove access where the interface permits it, then change the password if the unfamiliar activity could indicate compromise. Review this list after using a public computer, replacing a phone, or signing in from a new location.
Consider withdrawal-address whitelisting
Review the withdrawal-address whitelist option in Security settings. Whitelisting can reduce the chance that funds are sent to an unapproved destination if someone gains access, but it also means you must deliberately maintain the approved-address list. Check the address and network before adding it.
Know how to stop access during an incident
If you notice suspicious activity, use the account-disable control and contact Binance.US through its official support channels. Do not wait for an unknown caller or a social-media message to offer help, and never provide the caller with your password or 2FA code.
Fix a Binance.US authenticator code that does not work
A TOTP code is valid only for a short time and depends on the phone’s clock. Work through these checks in order rather than repeatedly entering an old code.

- Turn on automatic time settings. In the phone’s system settings, set the date, time, and time zone to automatic. A clock that is even modestly out of alignment can make every generated code fail.
- Restart the phone. Reopen the authenticator app after the restart and wait for a newly generated six-digit code.
- Enter the newest code. Type the current code carefully and submit it before the timer changes. Do not use a code from the previous time interval.
- Check the account entry. If the app contains several entries, make sure you are using the Binance.US entry created during setup, not a similarly named entry for another account.
- Confirm the setup key. If you recently reinstalled the app or moved to another phone, verify that the entry was restored from the correct 16-digit key. Do not guess at a key or accept a setup someone sends you.
- Stop after repeated failures. Repeated attempts can trigger additional security checks. If automatic time, a restart, and a fresh code do not solve the problem, use Binance.US’s Authenticator Issues or documented reset flow instead of trying random codes.
Do not disable the working factor until you have a replacement method ready. If the app still works on an old device, keep that device available while you complete the change.

SMS delivery can fail for reasons unrelated to the Binance.US password. Check each item before requesting another message.
- Confirm that the phone has signal and that Wi-Fi calling or cellular service is functioning as expected.
- Toggle airplane mode on and off, then request a fresh code.
- Verify that the phone number in Security settings is accurate and includes the correct country or regional format.
- Check spam, blocked-sender, and unknown-sender filters in the messaging app.
- Clear the browser cache or try the supported account interface again if the request page appears stuck.
- Confirm that Binance.US services are supported in your region. Availability and messaging behavior can differ by location.
- Check whether the phone number is already linked to another Binance.US account. A number associated with another account can prevent code delivery.
Requesting many codes in quick succession can make it difficult to tell which message is current. Wait for the newest message, enter only that code, and use the account’s recovery or support path if delivery still fails.
Reset 2FA after losing a phone or authenticator
If you no longer have the device that generated your codes, use the Authenticator Issues option or the documented Binance.US reset flow. The exchange requires email verification and identity confirmation; a password alone is not enough to replace a lost factor.
- Open the Binance.US sign-in or verification screen and select Authenticator Issues when the authenticator code cannot be supplied.
- Start the reset request and follow the email-verification step sent to the address on the account.
- Complete the identity-confirmation prompts. Use the information requested by Binance.US and submit clear, current documentation through the official interface only.
- Wait for the review decision. Binance.US says a 2FA-reset request typically takes 48–72 hours to review.
- After approval, configure a new 2FA method immediately, then review devices, password, anti-phishing code, and withdrawal settings.
A successful reset normally creates a 48-hour withdrawal hold. Trading, deposits, and other account functions remain available during that hold, but withdrawals cannot be completed until it expires. Plan accordingly if you need to move funds. This 48-hour hold is separate from the 24-hour withdrawal restriction that Binance.US’s current Security settings page associates with a password change.

If you still control the old phone or have securely preserved the 16-digit key, do not begin a reset unnecessarily. First try restoring the authenticator entry on a replacement device and verify that it generates the expected six-digit code. A reset is for loss of access, not a shortcut around a working factor.
Choose a setup that fits your routine
If you travel or often lose cellular coverage
An authenticator app may be more practical because the code is generated on the device rather than delivered by SMS. Set it up before leaving home, verify that it produces a current six-digit code, and protect the phone with a screen lock. Keep the 16-digit key in a secure recovery location that you can reach without exposing it to other people.
If your phone number is your most reliable factor
SMS may be simpler when you consistently control the same number and receive messages promptly. Protect the number with your carrier’s account-security options, keep the number current in Binance.US, and consider adding an authenticator method so a carrier outage does not become an account-access emergency.
If more than one person uses a computer
Use a private browser profile or a dedicated device, sign out when finished, and review device management afterward. Never save the Binance.US password or authenticator key in a shared browser or send a code to another user.
Maintenance checklist
- Check the login domain before every sign-in: https://www.binance.us/login.
- Keep at least one 2FA method enabled and test any newly added method before removing an old one.
- Keep your email address and phone number current, and investigate any unexpected verification message.
- Review device-management entries periodically and remove devices you no longer own.
- Keep the anti-phishing code enabled and treat messages without the expected code as suspicious.
- Review the withdrawal-address whitelist after changing devices or account credentials.
- Remember that a lost authenticator device requires email and identity verification and can delay withdrawals after the reset.
Following these steps gives your Binance.US account a second layer beyond the password while preserving a clear recovery path if a phone, number, or authenticator entry stops working.
