How to search Connecticut’s unclaimed property database and file a claim

Search Connecticut’s official database at CTBigList.gov. Searching is free, and Connecticut says rightful owners can claim property at any time. If you find a possible match, use the claim instructions displayed in the live portal; documentation and submission steps can vary by claim.

The Connecticut Office of the Treasurer also offers help at 1-800-833-7318. The office’s overview lists Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern, but verify the hours before calling because contact schedules can change.

What Connecticut calls unclaimed property

Unclaimed property is money or other financial property that a business can no longer connect with its owner. Connecticut’s Treasurer says examples include bank accounts, uncashed checks, refunds, liquidated securities and insurance proceeds. The Department of Consumer Protection also lists deposits, stocks, bonds, mutual-fund shares, travelers’ checks, money orders, life-insurance policies and safe-deposit-box contents. Safe-deposit-box contents can involve physical items as well as financial instruments. See the state’s Unclaimed Property Overview and the Department of Consumer Protection explanation.

Banks, credit unions, insurers, brokerages, utilities and other businesses generally report property after losing contact with a customer for three to five years. A forgotten utility deposit, an old payroll check, an insurance payment mailed to a former address or a dormant investment account can therefore appear years after the underlying relationship ended. The state then holds the property as custodian until the owner or an heir establishes a right to it. A database listing is therefore a lead, not proof that the money belongs to the person who searched.

Connecticut Treasurer Erick Russell said in a January 28, 2026 release that the state was holding more than $1 billion in unclaimed property. That figure is the statement in that release, not a live balance that changes every day.

Before you search: assemble a useful history

A few minutes of preparation can make a database search much more complete. Write down every name you have legitimately used, including a former surname, middle-name variation, initials, a business trade name or a spelling variation. Gather former mailing addresses, including addresses where you lived briefly, attended school, worked or shared a residence with family. Property may have been reported under the details attached to an old account rather than under your current information.

For a deceased relative, collect the person’s legal name, former names and addresses, and identify who has authority to act for the estate. For a business, note its legal entity name, former names and any records showing who is authorized to act. Do not guess at ownership or alter a name to make a result appear to fit.

Search CTBigList.gov first

CTBigList.gov is the state-directed route for Connecticut-held property. The basic search and a rightful owner’s claim are free; you do not need to hire a paid “locator” to submit a claim for you.

  1. Collect the names and places connected to your financial history. Include your current legal name, former names, nicknames or spelling variants, and addresses where you lived or received mail. If you are searching for a business, gather its legal and former names as well.
  2. Open CTBigList.gov and search. Use the official state destination rather than an advertisement or an unsolicited message. The exact fields and filters can change, so follow the labels shown on the site when you search.
  3. Repeat the search with relevant variations. Search former surnames, alternate spellings and older addresses as well as your current information. A record may be reported under the name or address associated with the original account, not the details you use today.
  4. Review every plausible result. Compare the listed owner name, reported address, property type and any other information the result displays with your own records. Similar names are common; do not claim a record solely because the name looks familiar.
  5. Start the claim from the result itself. Select the portal’s current claim option and read the instructions for that specific property. The portal, not an old checklist or a third-party site, controls what must be submitted now.

Searches should be broad first and selective second. Run a search for your current surname, then each former surname and meaningful spelling variant. Repeat with addresses from earlier homes and workplaces if the site allows address information. Search a business under its legal name and any predecessor or trade name. Keep a simple list of results so that similar names or multiple properties do not get mixed together.

The Treasurer’s overview page is useful for confirming that you are on the state’s official program. It does not replace the claim-specific directions shown after you select a record.

How to decide whether a result is yours

Use the information in the record as an identification aid, then assemble evidence that connects you to the original owner. For example, an old address can be persuasive when it matches a prior residence, but an address alone does not establish ownership. Check whether the property type makes sense: an uncashed payroll check, an old utility deposit, a closed bank account or an insurance payment should fit your personal or family history.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Search every name you legitimately used, including a former surname after marriage or divorce.
  • Check addresses from previous homes, employers, schools and shared family residences.
  • For a deceased relative, determine whether you are acting as an heir or other legally recognized claimant before beginning the claim.
  • For a business, use the entity’s legal name and records showing that you are authorized to act for it.
  • If several results look similar, keep their identifying details separate so you do not attach evidence to the wrong record.

Useful corroboration can include an old account statement, correspondence from the holder, a pay record, an insurance notice, a utility bill, a lease or another document that ties the claimant to the listed owner and address. These are examples of records to locate, not a universal Connecticut checklist. Submit only what the current portal requests for that particular record.

Do not treat a matching name as a guaranteed windfall. Connecticut’s claim review is where the state verifies ownership, and the result may belong to another person with the same name.

File the claim through the current portal

Once you identify a likely record, follow the live CTBigList.gov claim flow from that record. Read each page before submitting, save the claim or confirmation number, and retain copies of anything you send. Requirements can differ for an individual owner, an heir, a business, jointly owned property or a record involving securities or a safe-deposit box.

Check that the claimant name and contact information are accurate before submission. If the portal lets you combine several records, make sure each one actually belongs to the same owner and that you understand whether separate evidence is required. A claim number is important if the office later asks you to clarify an address, a name change or an estate relationship.

Why older claim instructions need caution

A November 2018 Treasurer’s FAQ described a process involving a downloaded and mailed claim form, original notarized signatures, photo identification, a Social Security number, proof of ownership and additional documents for particular situations. That PDF remains historical guidance, but it is not confirmation that every item is required in the current portal. The current claim screen may use a different submission method or request different evidence. Read the instructions attached to your record before obtaining a notarization, mailing originals or disclosing sensitive information. The historical document is available as the November 2018 FAQ for Potential Owners or Heirs.

Prepare documents without guessing at the checklist

Have ordinary ownership records available, such as account statements, correspondence, pay records, address history, estate papers or business authorization documents, but submit only what the current claim instructions request. Do not email or upload a Social Security number, identity document or estate record to an address that is not part of the official state process. If the portal’s instructions are unclear, call the Unclaimed Property Division using the state-listed number and ask what applies to your claim type.

Scan or photograph documents only when the official portal calls for an upload, and make sure copies are legible. Keep originals unless the current instructions specifically require otherwise. If a document contains information unrelated to ownership, do not send extra pages merely to be safe; unnecessary personal data creates additional privacy risk.

After submission

Keep the confirmation details and monitor the contact method you provided. If the Treasurer asks for more information, respond through the official channel and match the request to your claim number. A request for additional proof does not mean the claim is invalid; it means the office needs enough evidence to distinguish you from other possible owners.

Processing time can depend on the property type, the quality of the ownership evidence and whether an estate or business is involved. The available state guidance does not establish one standard timetable, so do not rely on a promised payment date from an outside company. If you need an update, use the state contact information and have your claim reference ready.

CT Big Match: when Connecticut may send property automatically

Connecticut also operates CT Big Match, a narrower route that can return some property without a traditional application. The Treasurer’s May 15, 2025 announcement says sole-owner property valued at less than $2,500 may qualify when the state can match and confirm the owner’s identity and address. The state says it sends a letter before mailing a check. Eligibility is limited, so an eligible automatic payment does not replace a personal search.

The same 2025 announcement projected about $2.5 million for more than 15,000 residents through CT Big Match and reported that FastTrack had reunited more than 22,000 residents with more than $3 million since launch. Those are dated projections and cumulative figures from the announcement, not current totals. Details are in the CT Big Match announcement.

Route Who it serves What you do Important limit
Standard CTBigList search and claim People seeking Connecticut-held property, including owners and eligible heirs Search, select a possible match and follow the current claim instructions Documentation and submission method depend on the claim and the live portal
CT Big Match Some sole-owner records under $2,500 that pass identity and address matching Watch for the state’s notification letter and follow any instructions it contains Only eligible, successfully matched records are considered; many records will not qualify

If you lived, worked or banked in another state

Search Connecticut when Connecticut is the state connected to the property, but also check other states tied to your history. Connecticut says it participates through the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators in MissingMoney.com, a nationwide lookup tool. Use it as an additional search, not as a substitute for CTBigList.gov when Connecticut is the reported holder. The available state material does not establish that one database is more complete or faster than the other.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Examples of reasons to search elsewhere include a former employer in another state, a bank account opened before a move, an insurer headquartered elsewhere or a prior address outside Connecticut. Use the same name variants and address history in each search. A result in another state generally has that state’s own claim instructions, so do not assume a Connecticut procedure applies.

How long you have to claim

There is no time limit for a rightful owner to claim Connecticut-held property. The state remains custodian until the property is claimed. In the January 28, 2026 National Unclaimed Property Day release, Treasurer Russell encouraged residents to make searching part of an annual financial routine. The release reported that Connecticut returned $120.9 million to nearly 60,000 rightful owners in fiscal year 2025, a record year for the program. These figures describe that fiscal year and should not be read as a promise about an individual claim’s value or timing.

No deadline does not mean you should ignore a record. Addresses, names and family circumstances become harder to document over time, so saving old statements and estate records can make a future claim easier. An annual review is especially sensible after moving, changing a name, closing an account, changing employers or settling a relative’s estate.

What is free—and what to avoid paying for

Connecticut’s official search and a rightful owner’s claim are free. A company that asks for an upfront fee, a percentage of the money or your login credentials is not necessary to use the state process. You can complete the search yourself and contact the Treasurer’s Unclaimed Property Division for assistance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Type CTBigList.gov yourself or use a link from a Connecticut government page; do not rely on a link in an unexpected text or email.
  • Check that a page is using the state’s official domain before entering personal information.
  • Do not send payment to “release” property. The state’s program does not charge a rightful owner to search.
  • Do not provide banking or identity information to a caller until you independently verify the office and the claim reference.
  • Keep a copy of every form, upload, letter and tracking receipt.

These precautions follow directly from the state’s free-claim policy: a fee request is a reason to stop and verify, not a normal step in the Connecticut process. A legitimate-looking letter can still contain an incorrect phone number or web address, so independently reach the Treasurer through a state page when in doubt.

Common situations and the safest next step

Your current name does not match the listing

Search former names and use the claim flow’s instructions for documenting a legal name change. Do not create a new identity or alter a record to force a match; provide the evidence the portal requests.

The record shows an old address

An old address can be normal because the property was reported using historical account information. Compare it with your own address history and submit only the address documentation requested for that claim.

The owner has died

An heir or other authorized representative may be able to claim, but the evidence depends on the estate and the claimant’s relationship. Follow the current heir instructions in CTBigList.gov rather than relying on the 2018 FAQ’s historical list. If multiple heirs or an executor are involved, clarify who is authorized before filing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Several people share the same name

Use the address, property type and your financial records to distinguish the result. If you cannot establish a connection, do not file simply because the name is common.

You receive a letter about CT Big Match

Compare the letter with information you can independently verify through Connecticut’s official pages. The program says a notification precedes an eligible check, but you should still avoid clicking unexpected links or paying a fee. Contact the Treasurer through the state-listed number if the letter seems inconsistent.

The portal does not answer your question

Save the record details and contact the Unclaimed Property Division at 1-800-833-7318. The overview lists weekday hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern; verify those hours before calling.

A practical annual search routine

  1. Search CTBigList.gov using your current and former names.
  2. Repeat with addresses from earlier residences and workplaces.
  3. Search MissingMoney.com for states connected to your history.
  4. Review results carefully and claim only records you can substantiate.
  5. Store confirmation numbers and copies of submitted evidence.
  6. Repeat the review once a year, especially after moving, changing your name, closing accounts or settling an estate.

Connecticut’s program covers everything from dormant accounts to uncashed checks and insurance proceeds, so a short annual search can cover several kinds of forgotten property at once. The key distinction is simple: CTBigList.gov is the starting point, the live claim instructions govern the paperwork, and the state—not a paid intermediary—decides whether the evidence establishes ownership.

How long do I have to claim money listed in Connecticut?

There is no time limit for a rightful owner to claim Connecticut-held property. The state holds it as custodian until the owner or an eligible heir establishes a right to it.

Does a matching name prove that the property is mine?

No. A listing is only a possible match. Compare the address, property type and your own records, then follow the claim process so the Treasurer can verify ownership.

Do I need a notary, Social Security number or mailed originals?

Do not assume so. A November 2018 FAQ described those items in a historical process, but current requirements may differ. Use the instructions shown by CTBigList.gov for the specific record before sending sensitive information or originals.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can an heir claim property for someone who died?

An heir or other authorized representative may be able to claim. The required evidence depends on the estate and relationship, so follow the current heir instructions in the portal and contact the Unclaimed Property Division if anything is unclear.

What is CT Big Match?

It is a narrower automatic-return program. Connecticut says sole-owner property valued at less than $2,500 may qualify when the state can match and confirm the owner’s identity and address, with a letter sent before the check. Many records will not qualify.

Should I search other states too?

Yes, if your history includes another state. Connecticut points residents to MissingMoney.com, a nationwide lookup tool operated through the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators. Also use CTBigList.gov when Connecticut is the reported holder.

What number can I call for help?

The Treasurer’s overview lists 1-800-833-7318 for Unclaimed Property assistance and gives weekday hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern. Verify the current schedule on an official state page before calling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Start at CTBigList.gov, search current and historical names and addresses, and treat each listing as a lead rather than proof. File only through the live claim instructions, which control the documents and submission method. Connecticut claims are free and have no deadline; CT Big Match may return a limited set of sole-owner records under $2,500 automatically. For questions, verify contact details through the Treasurer’s official pages, and search MissingMoney.com as well when your financial history crosses state lines.
