To find Indian shares that lost money over five years, freeze a dated stock universe, collect split- and dividend-aware historical data, use the nearest valid trading days for the start and end dates, calculate each stock’s holding-period total return, and flag every result below 0%. Then compare each flagged stock with a broad or sector benchmark and investigate liquidity, volatility, leverage, profitability, earnings stability, and corporate actions.
The result is a historical screen, not a forecast or an automatic sell signal. The answer changes with the exchange, security universe, observation date, treatment of dividends, and handling of delisted or renamed companies. Record those choices so another investor can reproduce the list.

What “negative five-year return” actually means
A five-year return compares an investment’s value on two specified dates. Let D be the observation date. The starting observation is normally the trading day nearest to D minus five calendar years; the ending observation is the trading day nearest to D. A stock is flagged when its holding-period return is below zero.

For example, if a dividend-adjusted value rose from 100 to 120, the holding-period return would be 20%. If it fell from 100 to 80, the return would be −20%. Those numbers are only an arithmetic illustration, not a market result.
Use total return when the question is about an investor’s outcome
A price series measures only the change in the quoted share price. A total-return series also includes cash distributions and assumes those distributions are reinvested according to the index methodology. NSE explains that its Total Returns Index includes constituent price movements and dividend receipts, records dividends on the ex-date, and reinvests them.
“An investor in index stocks should benchmark his investments against the Total Returns index instead of the price index to determine the actual returns vis-à-vis the index.” — NSE India, Total Returns Index page, updated 4 January 2023.

If your data contains only prices, label the result price return. Do not call it total return. You can report dividends separately, but adding an unverified dividend estimate to an adjusted price creates a different and potentially misleading series.
Do not confuse holding-period return with CAGR
A five-year holding-period return answers, “How much did the investment gain or lose over the whole interval?” Compound annual growth rate (CAGR) answers, “What constant annual rate would produce that ending value?” Its formula is (ending value / starting value)^(1/5) - 1 for exactly five years. Both measures have the same positive or negative sign when the dates and values are the same, but their percentages are not interchangeable. Keep separate columns for total return and CAGR if a data vendor reports both.
Freeze the stock universe before downloading data
The universe determines what your screen can find. Write the rules first and save the resulting security list. At minimum, specify:
- Exchange: NSE, BSE, or both. Do not merge listings casually; map the security identifiers and select one authoritative series for each company.
- Security type: equity series and any exclusions such as exchange-traded funds, preference shares, warrants, suspended securities, or newly listed issues.
- Size or membership rule: a market-cap band, a named index, or every eligible listed equity.
- Minimum history: whether a company must have a valid observation near the five-year start date.
- As-of date: the date on which membership and the ending observation are fixed.
A list downloaded today is a current-universe screen. It can omit companies that were eligible five years ago but later delisted, merged, or fell out of an index. That is survivorship bias: the screen studies today’s survivors rather than the investable set known at the starting date. A point-in-time universe, preserved as of the chosen date, is needed for a historical membership study.

Choose the question before choosing the list
These are different questions:
- “Which stocks in today’s NSE large-cap universe have lost money over the past five years?” uses current membership.
- “Which stocks an investor could have selected five years ago subsequently lost money?” requires a point-in-time universe and historical eligibility data.
- “Which current constituents of a named index underperformed?” requires the index’s membership rule and the relevant review dates.
Put the question and universe definition in the screen’s title or methodology note. Otherwise readers cannot tell whether a missing delisted stock is a genuine non-loss or simply absent from the file.
Set the dates consistently
Take the observation date first. Subtract five calendar years, then select the nearest valid trading day for the start. Select the nearest valid trading day for the end as well. If the anniversary falls on a Saturday, Sunday, exchange holiday, or a day with no valid observation, state whether you used the previous trading day, the next trading day, or the nearest day by distance. Apply the same convention to every security.
Do not silently use one stock’s first available date and another stock’s exact anniversary. A shorter interval can make a loss appear smaller, while a longer interval can include a materially different market cycle. Store the actual start and end dates beside every calculated return, not only the intended anniversary.
Collect historical data from authoritative files
NSE’s reports portal exposes several data types useful for this work:

- Per-security historical price and volume data.

- Old and new symbol and company-name mappings.
Download the raw files rather than copying a displayed percentage. Preserve the file name, download date, exchange, security identifier, field definitions, and any adjustment setting. If you use another vendor for security-level total returns, verify exactly what its “adjusted” field includes and whether its five-year figure is a price return, total return, or CAGR.
Keep an evidence trail for every row
Each screened security should retain:
- Company name and exchange identifier.
- Symbol at the start date and current symbol, if different.
- Actual start and end trading dates.
- Starting and ending values.
- Whether the values are price-only or dividend-inclusive.
- Source file name and download date.
- Corporate-action and symbol-mapping notes.
- The calculation formula or spreadsheet cell references.
This evidence trail makes a surprising result auditable. It also prevents a later data refresh from quietly changing the universe or dates.

Never compare an unadjusted historical price with an adjusted current price. Use a consistently adjusted series, or reconstruct the adjustment using documented corporate-action terms. A blank result may be a renamed company, not a newly listed one. If the record cannot be reconciled, exclude it from the calculated screen and mark the reason rather than assigning a zero return.
Calculate the screen in a spreadsheet or script
The calculation itself is simple; the controls around it are what make the result credible. A reproducible workflow is:
- Save the universe: export the eligible securities as of the chosen date and give the file a versioned name.
- Set the observation date: record it in one cell or configuration value.
- Derive the anniversary: calculate the date five years earlier using a calendar-year function, not an assumption that every year has 365 days.
- Select trading dates: map both target dates to the agreed nearest valid observations.
- Load adjusted values: retrieve price-only and, where available, dividend-inclusive values for the same security and dates.
- Calculate return: divide the ending value by the starting value and subtract one.
- Flag losses: set the flag to true only when the return is less than 0%; a value of exactly 0% is not negative.
- Sort: order flagged securities from the most negative return to the least negative.
- Attach diagnostics: add benchmark, sector, liquidity, risk, fundamental, and corporate-action fields before interpreting the result.
A language-neutral version is:
universe = securities_as_of(as_of_date)
for security in universe:
start = nearest_trading_day(as_of_date - 5 years)
end = nearest_trading_day(as_of_date)
start_value, end_value = dividend_adjusted_values(security, start, end)
five_year_return = end_value / start_value - 1
flag = five_year_return < 0
In a spreadsheet, keep the date-selection rule explicit. A formula that simply looks up the nearest row can choose a date after the target for one security and before it for another if the data has gaps. Where a security has no observation near the start date, apply your minimum-history rule and report it as unavailable rather than shortening the window silently.
Benchmark every result against the same dates
A negative stock return can reflect a company-specific problem, a weak sector, or a broad market decline. Calculate the benchmark’s total return over the identical actual start and end dates. For a large-cap universe, Nifty 50 is a common reference; SEBI Investor describes it as representing the performance of the 50 largest and most frequently traded NSE companies. For a sector-focused universe, use the relevant sector index as well.

Keep two comparisons separate:
- Absolute result: whether the stock’s own five-year total return is below 0%.
- Relative result: how many percentage points the stock lagged or exceeded the benchmark over the same interval.
A stock can lose 8% while a benchmark loses 20%; it has a negative absolute return but positive relative performance. Conversely, a stock can gain 4% while its benchmark gains 35%; it is positive in isolation but a substantial relative laggard.
Add diagnostics before drawing a conclusion
The negative-return flag identifies what deserves investigation. It does not explain the decline or predict recovery. Add the following fields to the results file.

Liquidity and minimum history
Record average traded value or volume using a stated look-back period, the number of valid observations, and any periods of suspension. Thin trading can make a closing price stale and can make a nominal loss difficult to transact at. NSE index methodologies use liquidity eligibility and free-float market capitalization in index construction; those concepts are useful checks even when your screen is not an index.
Volatility and beta
Calculate or source return volatility over a stated frequency and period. Beta describes how a security’s returns moved relative to a market return; standard deviation describes the variability of the security’s own returns. A high beta or high standard deviation explains a rougher path, not whether the next five years will be better.
Profitability, leverage and earnings stability
Collect return on equity (ROE), debt-to-equity where applicable, and a measure of earnings-per-share growth variability. NSE’s quality-index methodology uses ROE, debt-to-equity where applicable, and EPS-growth variability over the previous five years. Record the reporting periods and accounting basis so figures from different companies are not treated as directly interchangeable.
Corporate and governance events
Review company filings for promoter or ownership changes, share pledging, auditor qualifications, business-line changes, major fund-raising, related-party events, and restructuring. A price decline may reflect a one-time event, a lasting impairment, or a business that has changed so much that the earlier five-year comparison is no longer economically comparable.

| Liquidity | Volume or traded value, look-back period, suspensions | Indicates whether the quoted result may be difficult or costly to trade. |

Read common result patterns correctly
Stock negative, benchmark positive
This is the clearest relative warning: the company destroyed value while the chosen market or sector reference gained. Investigate earnings, balance-sheet stress, governance, dilution, competitive position, and corporate actions before making any decision.
Stock negative, benchmark also negative
The loss may be partly market-wide or sector-wide. Compare the stock’s loss with the benchmark’s loss and then examine beta and volatility. A company can still be a severe relative underperformer during a broad sell-off.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteStock positive, benchmark much stronger
This stock should not appear in the negative-return list, but it may still merit a relative-underperformance review. Keep this analysis separate from the below-zero screen so the two questions are not conflated.

Large loss with weak liquidity
Check whether sparse trading, stale prices, or long suspensions distort the apparent endpoint. Confirm trades and corporate actions before treating the percentage as economically realizable.
Common screening errors and fixes
- Using today’s list to make a five-year historical claim: label it current-universe, or obtain point-in-time membership and include delisted names where appropriate.
- Calling a price return a total return: use a dividend-inclusive series or label the output price return.
- Mixing dates: use one documented trading-day convention for every security and benchmark.
- Ignoring splits or bonuses: reconcile the share basis before comparing endpoints.
- Missing renamed securities: use old/new symbol and company-name mappings.
- Treating a vendor percentage as self-explanatory: verify whether it is price return, total return, or CAGR.
- Assigning zero to missing data: mark the observation unavailable and explain why it failed the history rule.
- Ranking without a benchmark: report both absolute loss and relative underperformance.
- Interpreting a flag as a sell signal: investigate the business and portfolio context; a historical loss does not guarantee further decline or recovery.
How to publish or share the results responsibly
State the screen’s as-of date, exchange, security type, universe rule, minimum history, date convention, return definition, and data source directly above the results. Keep price return and total return in separate columns. Sort by the total return from most negative to least negative, but retain the benchmark and sector comparisons beside each row.
For every flagged security, preserve the actual start and end dates and a concise explanation of unresolved issues. If a comparable value is not established, write “not stated” and identify the source or reason; never fill the cell with an estimate. A reader should be able to download the same raw observations, apply the same adjustment notes, and reproduce the same flag.
What the screen can—and cannot—tell you
The screen can identify securities whose defined five-year holding-period value fell below zero and can show whether they lagged a relevant benchmark. It can also organize the next research questions: Was the loss caused by the sector, the market, leverage, unstable earnings, poor liquidity, dilution, a corporate action, or a business-model change?
It cannot establish that a stock is cheap, that a turnaround is likely, or that a future five-year return will be negative. Historical screening is a filtering step. Investment decisions require current financial statements, valuation, liquidity, portfolio concentration, tax considerations, and a risk assessment beyond the endpoint calculation.
Why there is no single official count of losing Indian stocks
As of 16 October 2026, no official source publishes one portfolio-wide count of Indian stocks with negative five-year returns. Such a number depends on the chosen exchange, point-in-time universe, listing-history rule, observation date, treatment of dividends, and corporate-action adjustments. A defensible count must be calculated from security-level data under stated rules; it should not be quoted as a universal market statistic.
