You can often read a Cash App QR code saved on your phone, but the dependable trick is to use your phone’s image-recognition tools—not to assume Cash App has a universal “upload from camera roll” button. On supported Android phones, try Circle to Search; on iPhone, try opening the image in Photos and tapping a QR or Live Text result. Check the destination, recipient and amount before authorizing any payment.
First, identify what the QR code is for
A QR code with Cash App branding is not automatically a payment authorization. It may identify a personal account, open a payment request, start a Cash App Pay merchant checkout, or simply contain a website link. The code’s contents—and the screen that opens—matter more than its appearance.

- Cash App Pay merchant code: Often shown at a participating checkout, including on a desktop screen. Cash App says customers can scan with Cash App or their phone camera and follow the prompts. Cash App’s Cash App Pay information describes online and in-store availability at Square sellers and select third-party merchants.
- Personal code or payment request: May identify a person or lead to a request. A personal code may not include a final amount, so check what Cash App displays before sending money.
- Other QR link: Could open a merchant page or unrelated website. A logo or familiar color does not prove that the destination is genuine.
Cash App Pay is currently available only in the United States, according to Cash App. That does not mean every QR code associated with Cash App is a Cash App Pay checkout.

On Android, try Circle to Search
If your Android phone supports Circle to Search, it can recognize a QR code displayed in an image or on screen. Google notes that availability depends on the device and region; the feature is not present on every Android phone. Its Android QR-code guidance covers QR codes in photos, PDFs, emails, apps and videos.

- Open the saved screenshot or photo containing the code.
- Invoke Circle to Search. Depending on your navigation setup, press and hold the Home button or long-press the navigation control.
- When the search interface appears, circle the QR code.
- Review the decoded information or link before opening it. If it appears to be the expected Cash App flow, tap the result and follow the on-screen prompts.
If Circle to Search is unavailable, try Google Lens or a QR-recognition control in your phone’s Gallery app. The exact menu name and location vary by manufacturer, Android version and installed Google services, so there is no single path that applies to every phone.
On iPhone, try Photos recognition or use another screen
Open the saved image in Photos and look for an interactive QR or Live Text result. If one appears, tap it, inspect the destination, and continue only if it matches the payment you expected. Recognition can vary with iOS version, device and image quality; it is not a guaranteed Cash App camera-roll feature.

- Open the image in Photos and check for a QR or text-recognition indicator.
- Tap the recognized result, if available, and review where it leads before opening it.
- If nothing is recognized, use the original image if possible. Crop closely around the code without cutting off its edges, and avoid a tiny or heavily compressed copy.
- If the image still will not respond, display it on a computer, tablet or second phone and scan it with the iPhone Camera or Cash App scanner.
Apple documents scanning a code in the live Camera view or using the Scan Code control in Control Center; those instructions do not describe importing a photo into that scanner. See Apple’s iPhone QR-scanning instructions. Pointing the iPhone Camera at an image displayed on that same iPhone is not a workable live-camera scan.
Verify the payment before you approve it
Decoding reveals what a QR code contains; it does not establish that the code is safe or that a payment is correct. Before entering a PIN or confirming, check:

- Destination: Does the link or app handoff match the merchant or person you intended to pay?
- Recipient or merchant: Does the name shown in Cash App or checkout match what you were told to expect?
- Amount and context: Is the amount correct, and does the checkout relate to your order? Stop if a supposed prize, verification or release requires an unexpected payment.
- Payment screen: Continue only in the official Cash App app or a checkout flow you recognize. A browser opening first is not proof of fraud, but inspect its domain and context before proceeding.
Cash App says Cash App Pay may use an available Cash balance first and, where applicable, a linked debit card; the funding behavior can depend on account status and available balance. Review the funding details shown for your transaction rather than assuming which source will be charged. Cash App’s payment information also directs users to request Cash App Pay refunds from the merchant; a refund may take up to 10 business days to reach Cash App.
Save the confirmation screen or receipt after a payment. Cash App’s U.S. Terms of Service warn that scams can result in lost funds and may have no recourse, so do not rely on a payment being reversible if you approve the wrong transaction.

If the QR code will not scan
- Image is blurry, small or compressed: Ask for the original image or a fresh code. Messaging and social apps may reduce image detail; a thumbnail may not contain enough information to decode.
- Glare, shadows or poor contrast: Use a clearer copy with even lighting and good contrast. Do not stretch or perspective-warp the code.
- Edges are cropped: Keep the full code, including its corner markers. Cropping away surrounding clutter can help, but cutting off part of the code can prevent recognition.
- It is a checkout screenshot: Merchant QR codes may be tied to a particular order or session and can expire. Ask the merchant to generate a current code.
- The code decodes but the link will not open: Check your internet connection. The image may decode locally, but opening a destination and completing payment generally require connectivity.
- The app does not open automatically: Review the link first. If it is an expected Cash App payment link, you may be able to open Cash App manually and follow the merchant’s or sender’s instructions; deep-link behavior can vary by device and app version.
- The code remains unreadable: Use the merchant’s Cash App Pay button or another offered payment method, or request a fresh link. Do not upload a financial or personal QR image to an unknown decoder website.
If a legitimate Cash App Pay transaction remains unresolved, contact the merchant about its checkout or refund. Cash App directs customers to support in the app or at cash.app/help, as linked from its Cash App Pay page. Update Cash App only through the official app store; avoid unofficial apps or tools claiming to unlock QR scanning.
