Give the agent a separate, low-value testnet account or smart account—not your seed phrase or private key. Delegate through a short-lived, revocable session or policy that names permitted actions, contracts and destinations, per-transaction and rolling spending caps, an approval threshold, and an emergency revoke method. Simulate every transaction, inspect its calldata, log the decision and receipt, and revoke access when the experiment ends. For stronger protection, require a second signer or MPC/co-signer so a stolen agent key cannot bypass the policy.
What “safe access” means on a testnet
Testnet tokens are usually valueless, but the wallet, signing key and host running your agent are still security assets. A compromised testnet agent can teach an attacker how your production automation is configured, expose credentials in logs, call unexpected contracts, or consume a shared RPC and faucet account. Treat the testnet as a rehearsal for mainnet controls rather than as a place where unlimited permissions are harmless.

A safe design separates four things:
- Owner authority: the seed phrase or private key remains in a wallet, hardware-backed signer, MPC service or separate approval process that the agent cannot read.
- Agent authority: a distinct identity receives only the permissions needed for the test and expires automatically.
- Policy enforcement: the allowed actions, contracts, destinations, limits and approval rules are checked before signing and, where possible, enforced by the account or network.
- Operations: simulations, logs, alerts, persistent usage state and a tested revoke path limit damage when software or infrastructure fails.
MetaMask’s credential rule is unambiguous: “Never store, log, or display private keys, seed phrases, passwords, or auth tokens.” Apply that rule to environment variables, debug output, crash reports, prompt transcripts and hosted-agent dashboards as well as source code.
The permissions an agent should receive
Write the policy as if you were granting access to an untrusted contractor. “Can use the wallet” is not a policy. The following fields make the authority testable and revocable.

| Policy element | Safe starting point | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | A dedicated agent address or session key | Lets you revoke this agent without changing the owner account. |
| Actions | Only the exact methods required, such as a test token transfer or one contract function | Prevents an otherwise valid key from invoking approvals, upgrades or administrative methods. |
| Contracts | An allowlist of verified contract addresses; block all others | Stops a malicious prompt or poisoned tool response from redirecting a call. |
| Destinations | Specific recipient addresses or a narrowly defined destination set | Separates “call this contract” from “send value anywhere.” |
| Value cap | A small maximum per transaction | Limits the loss from one bad request or loop. |
| Rolling cap | A daily or hourly budget that survives process restarts | Stops repeated small transactions from draining the test balance. |
| Action count | A maximum number of calls in the validity window | Controls runaway agents that stay under a value cap. |
| Validity | An explicit validAfter and short validUntil |
Turns an accidental forgotten session into an automatically expiring grant. |
| Approval threshold | Human confirmation for high value, unfamiliar contracts, approvals and permits | Adds judgment where static rules cannot recognize intent. |
| Revocation | An owner-controlled, tested emergency action | Lets you stop a compromised session without waiting for expiry. |
ERC-8196 describes this model as execution that requires “verifiable cryptographic proof that the action complies with a specific policy defined by the asset owner.” Its proposed policy format includes an agent address and identity, allowed actions, allowed and blocked contracts, per-transaction and optional daily limits, activation and expiry times, and a minimum verification score. It also specifies verification checks, nonce and expiry protections, revocation and hash-chained audit entries. The proposal was created on March 14, 2026 by Leigh Cronian and Chris Johnson; implementation and network support should be confirmed before relying on it.
Build the wallet boundary first
1. Create a fresh testnet account
Use a new account or smart account funded only with the tokens needed for the experiment. Do not connect an agent to an account that holds mainnet assets, NFTs, administrative roles or a large testnet balance. Record the chain and account addresses in your runbook, but never record the seed phrase in the same system.
2. Store owner authority outside the runtime
The process that interprets prompts and prepares transactions must not be able to read the owner seed phrase or private key. Suitable boundaries include a wallet that requires a separate confirmation, an MPC service, a hardware-backed signer, or an independent approval service. A secret manager that automatically injects the owner key into the agent process is not a meaningful boundary: a code execution bug or prompt-injection path can still request the key.

3. Create a dedicated agent identity
Generate a separate session key or agent address. Bind it to the policy with an activation time and short expiry. Keep the session credential separate from the owner credential and make its revocation identifier easy to find in your operations console.
Configure least privilege step by step
- List the experiment’s calls. Write down the chain, contract addresses, function names, token addresses, recipients, maximum amounts and expected number of calls. If a task cannot be expressed this way, it is not ready for unattended execution.
- Allow only those actions. Permit the required function selectors or action types. Explicitly deny token approvals,
permit, setApprovalForAll, ownership changes, proxy upgrades and arbitrary contract calls unless the test specifically requires one. - Add contract and destination rules. Allowlist exact addresses, not names supplied by a prompt. Block unknown contracts and reject a destination that differs by even one character from the approved value.
- Set caps. Choose a low
maxValuePerTx, a rolling hourly or daily limit and a maximum action count. Persist the counters in durable storage so restarting the agent cannot reset them. - Set approval conditions. Require a person to confirm anything above a low threshold, every approval or permit, every unfamiliar URL or contract call, and any payload that the simulator cannot decode confidently.
- Set time bounds. Use an explicit
validAfterand a shortvalidUntil, then schedule automatic revocation at the end of the test. - Test denial paths. Submit deliberately invalid recipient, amount, method and expiry values in a non-broadcast simulation. A secure policy should refuse them before signing.
Simulate and inspect every transaction
Never let a language model’s description stand in for transaction inspection. Before a signer sees a request, simulate it against the intended chain and compare the result with the experiment plan.
- Network: verify the chain ID and RPC endpoint. A wrong chain can make an otherwise familiar address point to a different contract.
- Recipient: compare the exact contract or destination address with the allowlist.
- Calldata: decode the function, arguments, token address, recipient and amount. Reject opaque or unexpected selectors.
- Value and gas: check native value, token amount, gas limit, fee fields and the resulting balance.
- Nonce and expiry: ensure the nonce is current and the session is still valid.
- State changes: inspect simulated token balances, allowances, ownership fields and emitted events.
Record the policy decision, simulation result, signer or approval identity, transaction hash, receipt, block number and any denial reason. Logs should contain enough information to audit behavior without containing private keys, seed phrases, passwords or authentication tokens.

Choose an enforcement pattern
Policy-bound smart account
An ERC-8196-style wallet makes policy compliance part of execution rather than leaving it to application code. The wallet can require cryptographic proof that the agent, action, destination, limits and validity period match the owner’s policy, then record an auditable decision. This is the strongest fit when a compatible implementation and testnet are available. Confirm the implementation’s supported networks, policy fields and revocation behavior; the proposal itself is not evidence that every wallet or chain supports it.

Safe smart account with approval choices
Safe’s agent quickstart presents four operating modes: a basic agent setup, human approval for agent actions, a multi-agent setup and an agent with a spending limit. Human approval is described as the highest-security option, with slower execution. A spending limit improves speed for routine calls but must be paired with contract and action restrictions; a value cap alone does not prevent a dangerous method call.
Bounded SDK session with a policy co-signer
XChain’s example uses allowedActions, allowedDestinations, maxPerAction, rolling-window limits, a confirmation handler, policy-violation logging and a persistent state file. It refuses a violating action before signing or broadcasting. Its documentation also states the critical limitation: “A normal wallet session can do anything the key can do. An agent session wraps the same key with a policy that is checked before every action leaves the SDK.” The SDK policy is a guardrail around the agent, not protection for a stolen raw WIF. If an attacker obtains that WIF, they can bypass the SDK. XChain’s MuSig2 co-signer closes this gap by requiring a second policy-daemon key before the network accepts a valid aggregate signature.

Managed MPC wallet
Binance describes an Agentic Wallet that uses MPC keyless security so the private key is never fully reconstructed on one device or server. It logs operations, constrains the agent at the API layer, supports daily limits and token scope, allows revocation by signing out and can require app confirmation for high-risk transactions. The page was last modified October 16, 2026 and lists BNB Smart Chain, Ethereum, Base and Solana. That is a managed-wallet reference point, not proof that every listed network or testnet is supported for your account or region.
| Pattern | Where the main control runs | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Policy-bound smart account | Account execution with cryptographic policy proof | Requires compatible implementation and network support. |
| Smart account with human approval | Owner approval before execution | Highest control, but slower for every approved action. |
| SDK session | Agent-side checks before signing | A stolen raw key can bypass software checks unless a co-signer is required. |
| MPC service | Distributed key shares plus service-level policy | Availability, geography, testnet coverage and provider controls must be verified. |
Testnet details change—verify them before funding
Chain IDs, RPC endpoints, faucets, token addresses and supported networks are volatile. Check the current official documentation immediately before creating the policy and again before funding the account. A current Binance page lists BNB Smart Chain, Ethereum, Base and Solana, while an XChain example uses a Dogecoin testnet; those examples do not establish interchangeable support. Never infer a testnet token address from a mainnet address or from an old tutorial.

What to do if the host or agent is compromised
Suspected prompt injection or abnormal call
Pause the agent, preserve logs and revoke the session. Do not “test one more transaction” to diagnose the issue. Compare attempted calls with the policy, rotate the agent credential, inspect the host for unauthorized processes and recreate the test wallet if its session key may have leaked.

Raw agent key exposed
Assume the attacker can perform every action that key can perform. Revoke the session or disable the co-signer immediately, move any remaining test funds to a fresh account and invalidate API tokens. A software allowlist cannot rescue a raw key that is accepted directly by the network.
Owner key or seed phrase exposed
Treat the owner wallet as fully compromised even if no unauthorized transaction is visible. Transfer assets to a newly generated wallet through a trusted signer, revoke token approvals and session permissions, and investigate where the secret appeared in code, logs, memory dumps or backups. Do not reuse the exposed seed phrase.
Revocation and closeout checklist
- Stop the agent process and cancel queued jobs.
- Revoke the session or policy on the account, not merely in the agent’s local configuration.
- Confirm the revocation transaction or service response and record its receipt.
- Reconcile every transaction, denial and remaining balance against the runbook.
- Delete temporary credentials and rotate any API or RPC tokens exposed to the runtime.
- Preserve a redacted audit record, then destroy the test account if it will not be reused.
Before the next experiment, repeat the denial tests and verify that an expired or revoked session cannot sign. A revoke button that has never been exercised is only an assumption.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDecision framework: speed versus control
Use unattended execution only for narrowly bounded, reversible test calls. Add human approval when the agent must touch an unfamiliar contract, use an approval or permit, exceed a small budget, or interact with a destination selected at runtime. Use a policy-bound account or MPC/co-signer when the agent must run for longer, the host is shared, or a stolen session key would otherwise be accepted directly by the network. The more value, duration and contract flexibility you grant, the more important chain-enforced policy and a second signer become.
