To remove a connected app, sign in to your bank’s official app or website and open Connected apps, Open Banking, Third-party access, Manage consents, or an Authorisation dashboard. Select the provider, review the accounts and permissions, then choose Cancel consent, Withdraw, or Revoke access. Withdraw the connection inside the app or provider website too.
If you ever typed your bank username and password into the service, treat that differently from a normal consent-based connection: change the bank password directly with the bank, enable two-factor authentication, review security alerts and transactions, and contact the bank if anything looks wrong. Revoking a token stops continuing API calls, but it does not automatically erase data the provider already copied or cancel a separate subscription, loan, or repayment agreement.

Use the bank’s own app or type its official web address manually; do not follow an unfamiliar link in an email or text. The labels vary by bank and country, but the control normally appears in privacy, security, settings, or payments.
- Sign in through the official channel. Use the bank’s mobile app or a browser bookmark you trust.
- Find the consent area. Search settings for Connected apps, Open Banking connections, Third-party permissions, Access & Consent, or Manage open banking consents.
- Open the provider’s record. Check which accounts are connected and whether the service can see balances, transaction history, account numbers, or other information.
- Check payment authority. A connection may be read-only, or it may include payment-initiation rights. Treat permission to create or initiate payments as a higher-risk scope.
- Review the expiry. Note the displayed consent duration or expiry date before cancelling, especially if you are investigating an unexpected connection.
- Cancel the consent. Choose Cancel consent, Withdraw, or Revoke access, then confirm the warning.
- Save the result. Make a screenshot or record the confirmation and check that the status changes to cancelled, revoked, or expired.
- Repeat the withdrawal at the provider. Open the connected app or its website and use its privacy, bank-connections, or account-settings controls to disconnect the account.
Open Banking UK describes consent as customer-controlled: you choose which apps receive access and for how long, and you can cancel through the app, website, or bank. The wording “No one gets access unless you say so” describes the intended consent model, but it does not mean every service uses the same menu or that previously copied data disappears automatically.

Where do banks put the connected-app or open-banking setting?
There is no universal menu name. Look for a dashboard that lists firms, accounts, permissions, and consent status rather than searching only for the name of the budgeting or verification app.
| Bank or system wording | What to look for | Documented detail |
|---|---|---|
| Many banks | Connected apps, third-party access, linked services, or open-banking connections | Menu placement and labels vary by institution and country. |
| HSBC UK | Open Banking Connections | HSBC says cancellation takes effect immediately, although the connected service may stop working. |
| The Co-operative Bank | Settings → Manage open banking consents → select provider → Action → Cancel consent | This is the bank’s documented path; your own account may display a different route. |
| Other consent-management interfaces | Access & Consent → Revoke Access | Some systems use this wording for the final revocation action. |
If you cannot find the dashboard, use the bank’s in-app help or a telephone number printed on your card. Ask specifically for the open-banking, third-party-consent, or connected-application team. Do not give a caller your full password or one-time security code.

What should I check before pressing “Revoke”?
Identify exactly what is being withdrawn. A provider can have several separate consents, such as a read-only connection for account verification and a payment permission for moving money.
- Legal provider name: Confirm the firm behind the app, not merely the consumer-facing brand.
- Accounts covered: Check current accounts, savings accounts, cards, or joint accounts listed in the consent.
- Data categories: Look for balances, transaction history, account details, regular payments, or identity information.
- Payment scope: Verify whether the provider can initiate payments, create beneficiaries, or only read information.
- Consent status and expiry: Record whether the connection is active and when it is due to expire.
- Recent activity: If the connection is unfamiliar, inspect recent sign-ins, payment alerts, and transactions before closing the screen.
Taking a screenshot before cancellation is useful when you need to show the bank which accounts and permissions were present. Avoid storing screenshots where other people can access account numbers or transaction details.
Should I revoke access at the bank, in the app, or in both places?
For a regulated open-banking connection, use both controls when available. The bank-side action disables the bank’s consent or token; the provider-side action tells the service to stop using the connection and can explain which feature will be affected.

| Consideration | Bank-side revocation | Provider-side withdrawal |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | Controls the bank’s recorded consent and access token. | Stops the service from using the connection in its own systems. |
| Confirmation | Often shows a cancelled, revoked, or expired status in the banking dashboard. | May show a disconnected status and explain which app feature will stop. |
| Speed | Some banks, including HSBC UK in its guidance, describe immediate effect. | Timing and user-interface confirmation depend on the provider. |
| Historical data | Does not by itself erase information already received. | Does not by itself prove that stored copies have been deleted. |
| Credential exposure | Not sufficient if you gave the service your bank password. | Not sufficient if the service can still sign in with a shared password. |
| Payment risk | Lets you check and remove payment-initiation permission at the source. | Lets you disable the app’s workflow, but you should still inspect the bank’s payment activity. |
If one side says the connection is cancelled but the other still shows it as active, save both messages and contact the bank through an official channel. Do not reconnect merely to test whether access has ended.
How does revoking an API or OAuth-style connection work?
In a regulated account-information or payment-initiation connection, the consent record and the access token are the technical control points. Open Banking UK’s Account and Transaction API Profile v4.0 states that a customer may revoke consent at any time; the provider must cease API access and communicate the cancellation to the bank, while a bank-side revocation should revoke or expire the token.
What happens to an account-information connection?
The provider’s subsequent API requests should be rejected once the consent or token is revoked. A budgeting or account-aggregation feature may stop updating, display stale information, or ask you to connect again. That service impact is expected: it indicates that the live permission is no longer available.
What happens to payment-initiation access?
Payment initiation is a separate risk from reading transactions. Check the consent details for that scope and review recent and scheduled payments after revocation. If you see a payment you did not authorise, contact the bank immediately through the number on your card or an official website address typed manually.
How do I revoke a non-bank API key or token?
For a service that is not using a bank’s regulated open-banking dashboard, look for Authorised apps, Developer tokens, API keys, Sessions, or Connected services.

- Open the service’s official security or developer-settings page.
- List every token, key, session, or integration associated with the account.
- Revoke each item individually rather than disabling only the most recently created key.
- Rotate any secret that may have been exposed, including keys used by scripts or third-party integrations.
- Check logs or activity history for calls made after the suspected exposure.
There is no single cross-service standard for these labels or for how quickly a non-bank operator invalidates a token. If the interface does not show a revocation control, ask the operator’s security support team to invalidate the credential and provide a written confirmation.
What if I gave the connected app my bank username and password?
That is a credential compromise, not an ordinary consent withdrawal. A consent-based redirect sends you to the bank to authenticate; typing the bank password into an aggregator gives that service the credential itself. Bank of America’s security guidance warns that a service holding those credentials may have the same access as the customer and could continue to sign in even when the app is no longer being used.
- Change the bank password directly with the bank. Use the official app or website, not a link supplied by the service.
- Enable two-factor authentication. Prefer the bank’s strongest available method and make sure your recovery contact details are current.
- End other sessions if offered. Remove unfamiliar devices, remembered browsers, or active sessions.
- Review security alerts and sign-ins. Look for access from unfamiliar devices, locations, or times.
- Check payments and payees. Review recent transactions, scheduled payments, beneficiaries, new payees, and any payment the app could have initiated.
- Check account communications. Look for changed email-forwarding rules, notification settings, or contact details.
- Contact the bank if anything is unexplained. Use the number on the card or a manually entered official web address. Report unauthorised payments promptly.
Changing the password is the essential first action because simply deleting the app, cancelling a subscription, or revoking a separate token may not invalidate a password that was already shared.
Does revoking access delete the data the app already collected?
No. Revocation stops continuing access; it is not automatically an erasure request. A provider may retain transaction or identity data it already received under its privacy notice, legal obligations, fraud-prevention rules, or stated retention schedule.
| Action | What it normally does | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| Revoke bank consent | Stops the bank-authorised API connection and causes the token to be revoked or expire. | Deletion of historical copies held by the provider. |
| Disconnect inside the app | Removes the service’s active connection and may disable its features. | Removal from backups, audit logs, or legally retained records. |
| Submit a deletion request | Asks the provider to erase data under its applicable privacy process. | Immediate deletion where a retention exception applies. |
| Cancel a data connection | Ends the sharing relationship. | Cancellation of a separate subscription, loan, credit agreement, or repayment obligation. |
Use the provider’s privacy or data-rights contact to request deletion separately. Ask what categories will be erased, what must be retained, and when the request will be completed. The contract and privacy rules applicable to your country control the outcome.

Can a provider regain access after I revoke it?
Yes, but only after a new authorisation flow or another valid credential is supplied. A provider may ask you to authenticate with the bank again and issue a new token after you reconnect. Reauthorising can restore the feature, but it creates a fresh consent that should be checked for account selection, data scope, payment rights, and duration.
Do not approve a new request simply because the old connection disappeared from the app. Confirm the legal entity and permissions first, and stop if the service asks for your bank password instead of redirecting you to the bank.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can I check whether an open-banking provider is legitimate?
Open Banking UK advises customers in the United Kingdom to use its directory or the Financial Conduct Authority register to check whether a provider is authorised or registered. Which? explains that banks should provide an authorisation dashboard showing firms and the permissions granted. These checks are most useful before creating a new connection, but they can also help identify an unfamiliar existing consent.
Verify the firm before authorising
- Match the provider’s legal entity, not just its app name, with the bank’s consent record.
- Check the firm in the relevant regulator register or official open-banking directory for your country.
- Read the requested data categories and determine whether payment initiation is included.
- Check how long the consent lasts and whether it can be renewed automatically.
- Read the privacy and retention notice so you know how previously received data is handled.
- Stop if the service asks you to type your bank credentials into its own page rather than redirecting you to the bank.
Authorisation status does not make every use of data appropriate. It confirms the firm’s regulatory status; you still decide whether the requested accounts, data categories, duration, and payment permissions are necessary.
What should I do if revocation appears not to work?
Work from the bank’s recorded status, not only the provider’s display. A provider can show a disconnected screen while an old token remains active, or a bank dashboard can show cancellation while the app has retained historical information.

- The bank still shows active: repeat the bank-side cancellation, capture the confirmation, and ask the bank to verify that the consent and token are revoked.
- The provider still shows connected: use its privacy or support channel and provide the bank’s cancellation time and reference.
- The app keeps displaying old transactions: this may be cached or previously collected data; ask the provider how to delete stored data rather than assuming live access continues.
- You receive a new authorisation prompt: do not approve it unless you intend to reconnect and have checked the new scopes.
- You see an unfamiliar payment or sign-in: contact the bank immediately, change the password if it was shared, and follow the bank’s fraud process.
- You cannot identify the provider: ask the bank for the legal entity, consent date, accounts covered, and permission scope shown in its dashboard.
Keep the cancellation confirmation, support case number, screenshots, and relevant transaction details together. They make it easier for the bank or provider to trace whether the issue is a live token, cached information, or a separate credential.
What changes after I revoke a budgeting or verification connection?
The app may stop refreshing balances, categorising new transactions, verifying an account, switching a service automatically, or initiating payments. Those failures are a consequence of removing the permission, not evidence that the bank account itself is closed.
Revocation also does not terminate a commercial relationship. If the service is tied to a loan, subscription, repayment plan, or other contract, follow that contract’s cancellation or repayment process separately. Removing data access prevents future sharing but does not rewrite obligations already agreed.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know whether an app used open banking or my bank password?
A normal open-banking flow sends you to your bank’s own login page and returns you to the provider after you approve specific permissions. If you entered the bank username and password directly into the app or an aggregator page, assume the credential was shared and change it with the bank immediately.
Can I revoke access without closing my bank account?
Yes. Revocation targets a particular provider’s consent or token, not the underlying bank account. Other direct debits, cards, and services remain in place unless you cancel them separately.
Will revoking access stop a payment that is already pending?
It removes the provider’s continuing permission, but it is not a substitute for checking a payment already submitted. Review pending and scheduled payments in the bank and contact the bank promptly if you do not recognise one.
Recommended Free Tools
How do I request deletion after disconnecting an app?
Use the provider’s privacy, data-rights, or support contact and make a separate erasure request. Ask which records will be deleted, which must be retained, and the expected completion date; revocation alone does not answer those questions.
What should I record after cancelling a consent?
Save the provider name, accounts and permissions shown, cancellation date and time, the final status, and any reference number. Keep the record until you have confirmed that no further access or unexplained activity is occurring.
