The first two require a form-specific revocation or replacement. A return designee and oral disclosure are narrower permissions with different expiration rules.
If the authorization appears in Tax Pro Account, use its withdrawal function when available. Otherwise, authorize a replacement for the same matters and periods, or submit a signed revocation under the applicable form’s instructions. Keep proof of what you sent and do not assume that a submission receipt means every IRS system has already updated.

Start by identifying the kind of IRS access
“Access to my IRS account” is not one legal permission. A preparer might be able to represent you, receive confidential tax information, discuss one return, or participate only in a single call. The correct way to revoke access depends on that distinction.

|---|---|---|---|
| Form 2848, Power of Attorney and Declaration of Representative | An eligible representative may act before the IRS and inspect or receive confidential tax information. | Only the tax matters and years or periods listed on the form; it remains effective until revoked or withdrawn. | A new Form 2848 for the same matters and periods generally replaces the prior POA, or you revoke the existing form. |
| Form 8821, Tax Information Authorization | A named designee may inspect and/or receive confidential tax information but cannot represent you before the IRS. | Only the listed matters and years or periods; it remains effective until revoked or withdrawn. | A new Form 8821 for the same matters and periods generally replaces the prior TIA, or you revoke the existing authorization. |
| Third-party designee on a filed return | The designee can address processing of that return and related issues. | Limited to that return and related processing; it generally expires one year after the return’s due date, without counting extensions. | It is not a continuing POA or TIA and normally expires under its own rule. |
| Oral disclosure authorization | The person may discuss your information during an IRS call or meeting. | Generally limited to that conversation unless you state otherwise. | It generally ends when the call or meeting ends. |
The IRS explains the effect of a POA revocation this way: “When you revoke Power of Attorney, your representative will no longer receive your confidential tax information or represent you before the IRS for the matters and periods listed in the authorization.” That statement applies to the matters and periods covered by the revocation; it does not automatically cancel a separate Form 8821, return designee permission, or access held outside the IRS authorization system.

Use this decision path before sending anything
- Look for the authorization record. Check Tax Pro Account’s authorization-management area when the authorization is available there. If you have copies of Forms 2848 or 8821, compare the representative or designee’s name, address, tax matters, and years or periods.
- Separate IRS authority from your preparer relationship. A person can prepare a return without having a continuing POA or TIA. Conversely, ending your engagement with a preparer does not by itself tell the IRS to revoke a form.
- Decide whether you are replacing the representative. A new authorization for the same tax matters and periods generally revokes the earlier authorization of that type. If you do not want anyone else authorized, use the revocation route instead.
- Choose the route for the exact authorization. Form 2848 and Form 8821 have different instructions. A return designee and an oral disclosure do not use the same continuing-authorization procedure.
- Record what you submitted. Keep the marked form or notice, your signature and date, the transmission confirmation, and any status information shown by the IRS.
How to revoke Form 2848 power of attorney
Option 1: file a replacement POA
If you want a different representative, submit a new Form 2848 covering the same tax matters and years or periods. For those matching matters and periods, the new POA automatically revokes the prior POA. Read the new form carefully: a replacement limited to one year, one tax, or one issue does not necessarily remove the old representative from matters and periods that the new form does not cover.
Option 2: mark the existing copy “REVOKE”
If you do not want a replacement representative, write REVOKE across the top of the first page of your copy of the POA. Add a current taxpayer signature and date below the annotation. Send the marked copy by mail or fax using the Where To File Chart in the current Form 2848 instructions. A POA for a specific matter should go to the IRS office handling that matter rather than to a general address chosen at random.
If you do not have the POA copy
You can send the IRS a signed and dated statement instead. Identify every representative whose authority you are revoking, include each representative’s address, and describe the tax matters and years or periods covered. If you intend to remove that representative completely, use the exact phrase revoke all years/periods instead of trying to list an incomplete set of years.

The revocation ends the representative’s authority to act before the IRS and to inspect or receive confidential information for the matters and periods you identify. It does not erase past filings, cancel a tax debt, or terminate a private engagement, document-storage account, or portal operated by the preparer. Handle those separate relationships directly with the preparer.
How to revoke Form 8821 tax information authorization
Option 1: file a replacement TIA
Submit a new Form 8821 for the same tax matters and years or periods when you want another person to receive information instead. A matching new TIA automatically revokes the previous TIA for those matters and periods. Form 8821 does not give the new designee authority to represent you before the IRS.

Option 2: mark the authorization “REVOKE”
If you do not want a replacement designee, write REVOKE across the top of the copy of the Form 8821 authorization. Add a current taxpayer signature and date beneath the original signature. Follow the current Form 8821 Where To File instructions for mailing or faxing the marked copy.
If you do not have the TIA copy
Send a signed and dated notice stating that the designee’s authority is revoked. List each designee’s name and address and identify the tax matters and years or periods. For a complete removal, state revoke all years/periods. If the authorization was for a specific use or a particular IRS case, send the notice to the IRS office handling that case.
What the revocation changes
A TIA revocation stops the named designee from inspecting or receiving the confidential tax information covered by your notice. It does not give that person representation rights, and it does not revoke a separate Form 2848. You must revoke each authorization type that exists.
Manage authorizations online when the IRS offers that option
Tax Pro Account provides an online way to view active authorizations and withdraw them when the authorization and account support that function. The available records and actions depend on the authorization. An authorization that is visible online may have a withdrawal option; another may require the paper or form-specific procedure.
IRS guidance also describes online submission of Forms 2848 and 8821. Online availability can vary by authorization and account, so follow the current prompts rather than assuming that every form has identical options. The IRS says it does not notify users when an electronically submitted form has been processed. After submitting, use the applicable IRS processing-status guidance and retain the submission details.
Rank #3
Online withdrawal is not a reason to discard your records. Save the confirmation or status screen, note the date and authorization covered, and check again if the authorization still appears active after the processing information indicates a change.

Paper revocations: signature, destination, and timing cautions
Use a handwritten signature for mail or fax
For paper Forms 2848 and 8821 sent by mail or fax, IRS instructions require a handwritten, or “wet,” ink signature. An electronic signature is not accepted for those paper channels. Sign and date the marked form or revocation notice before transmission.
Use the current Where To File instructions
Addresses and fax destinations depend on the form, the taxpayer’s location, and whether the authorization concerns a specific IRS matter. Use the Where To File Chart in the current form instructions. For a specific-use POA or TIA, send the revocation to the IRS office handling the case when the instructions direct you to do so.
Do not treat a receipt as final processing
A fax confirmation, certified-mail record, or online submission receipt proves that something was transmitted; it does not establish that the IRS has finished reviewing and recording the revocation. The reviewed Form 2848 and Form 8821 instruction pages identify themselves as September 2021 instructions, so verify the live IRS instructions and address chart before sending a paper notice.
The official guidance does not establish one universal instant at which every IRS system or external interface reflects a revocation. State only what your Tax Pro Account or the relevant processing-status page actually shows.

Sample notice when you do not have the form copy
Use a plain, signed statement that contains the identifying information the IRS needs. Adapt the wording to the authorization and the matters involved:
I revoke the authority of the following representative or designee: {{full_name_and_address}}. The revoked authorization covers these tax matters and years or periods: {{matters_and_periods}}. If applicable, this revocation applies to revoke all years/periods. Taxpayer signature: {{signature}}. Date: {{date}}.
For a POA, identify the representative whose authority to act and receive information is being revoked. For a TIA, identify the designee whose authority to receive information is being revoked. List each person separately if more than one individual appears on the authorization. Do not use “all years/periods” unless you intend a complete revocation.

You hired a new preparer but the old preparer still appears
Check whether the new authorization covers the same matters and years or periods as the old one. A matching replacement Form 2848 replaces the old POA, and a matching replacement Form 8821 replaces the old TIA. If the new form covers only part of the old authorization, revoke the remaining matters or periods separately.
You filed Form 2848 but the old preparer still has a Form 8821
Filing Form 2848 does not revoke Form 8821. File a separate Form 8821 revocation or replacement for the designee. The reverse is also true: Form 8821 does not revoke Form 2848.
The preparer only helped prepare the return
Return preparation and IRS authorization are separate. A preparer may have no continuing authority at all, or may have a third-party designee permission limited to that return. Review the signed return and your copies of Forms 2848 and 8821 before choosing a revocation method.

The preparer was named as a third-party designee
This permission is narrower than a POA or TIA. It generally covers processing questions about the named return and expires one year after that return’s due date, excluding extensions. It is not a continuing authorization for all tax years. If you also signed Form 2848 or Form 8821, those separate authorizations must be handled independently.
You gave oral permission during an IRS call
Oral disclosure is generally limited to that call or meeting and normally ends when the conversation ends unless you tell the IRS otherwise. It is not the same as filing Form 2848 or Form 8821.
You cannot tell what the preparer has
Search your tax records for Forms 2848 and 8821, review active authorizations in Tax Pro Account when available, and check the authorization sections of recent returns for a third-party designee. If the matter is specific-use, identify the IRS office handling the case. When the authorization remains unclear or covers a dispute, a qualified tax professional can help identify the correct form, but hiring one is not required simply to submit a revocation.

After submitting the revocation
- Keep the evidence: retain the signed notice or marked form, the date sent, the delivery or fax confirmation, and any online status record.
- Check the scope: confirm that every representative, designee, tax matter, and year or period you intended to remove appears in the revocation.
- Check both authorization types: look separately for Form 2848 and Form 8821. One does not cancel the other.
- Monitor the official status: rely on the authorization record or processing-status information the IRS provides instead of promising that all systems change immediately.
- Notify the preparer: send a written notice that you no longer authorize IRS representation or receipt of IRS information, and separately request return of documents or closure of any private client portal if needed.
- Protect future communications: tell the IRS who, if anyone, may speak for you on the next call or meeting. Do not assume a past oral disclosure remains active.
Important limits to keep in mind
Revocation is limited to the authority and scope you identify. A complete revocation of one representative’s POA does not remove another representative listed on a different authorization. A revocation for one tax year does not automatically remove authority for other years unless you use the phrase revoke all years/periods or list those periods.
The IRS procedures described here are general. Taxpayer identity, the authorization type, whether the authorization is for a specific use, and the office handling the matter can change the filing route. Before mailing or faxing anything, verify the current Form 2848 or Form 8821 instructions and the applicable Where To File Chart.
Once you identify the correct authorization, the process is straightforward: withdraw it online when that option is available, replace it with a matching authorization, or submit the signed, dated revocation required by the form. Keep the scope precise and verify the IRS record after processing.
