An unfiled return is corrected in the preparation process. A return already filed while the original deadline is still open may be replaced, superseded or re-filed in some jurisdictions. After the deadline, you normally need a formal amended return, adjustment, revised return or correction claim. The correct route depends on the country (and sometimes state or province), the type of error and whether the change increases tax or seeks a refund.
This guide explains the decision in official examples from the United States, United Kingdom, India, Singapore, Canada and Japan. Their rules are not interchangeable. Confirm the current instructions for your tax year before submitting anything.

- Which authority received or will receive the return? “Revise,” “amend,” “adjust,” “correct” and “supersede” are different legal procedures in different systems.
- Which tax year and filing deadline apply? A deadline can vary by taxpayer, return type, filing method and extension. An extension to file does not necessarily extend the deadline used for a superseding return or a refund claim.
- Has the original return been filed? A draft or unfiled return is corrected before its first submission; an accepted return may require a second filing or a separate claim.
- What kind of error is it? Income, filing status, deductions, credits, dependents, withholding and other tax amounts are generally substantive. A simple arithmetic error may be corrected by the authority during processing.
- Has the authority sent a notice? Follow that notice. Sending a duplicate amendment instead of responding to a request can delay resolution.
| Your position | Usual next step | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Return not filed | Correct the return and file one accurate original return through the official channel. | Do not file an amendment for a return that has never been filed. |
| Filed, original deadline still open | Check whether the authority accepts a superseding, replacement or re-filed return. | The process and number of permitted re-filings vary by jurisdiction. |
| Filed, deadline passed | Use the prescribed amended-return, adjustment, revised-return or correction-claim route. | Separate time limits may apply to extra tax and refund claims. |
| Authority has contacted you | Respond through the channel and by the date in the notice. | The authority may correct the issue without a new return. |
If you have not filed the return
Correct the original return in your tax software or on the authority’s form, then submit that accurate return by the applicable due date. Review every changed line against the supporting records, save a copy of the final return and retain documents that explain the change.

This is different from amending an accepted return. Filing an amendment before an original return exists can create a mismatch or an unnecessary rejection. If you discover another error after submission, wait for confirmation that the original was received and then apply the correction procedure for your jurisdiction.
U.S. federal individual returns
The U.S. federal rule depends heavily on whether the original return deadline has passed. Use the original due date for the superseding-return rule, not an extended filing date, unless the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) tells you otherwise for your circumstances.
Filed before the original due date: a superseding return
The IRS states: “If you file an amended or corrected return before the due date for the original return, the amended return will replace or supersede the original return.” In practical terms, file the corrected federal return through an accepted filing channel by the original deadline. Include the complete corrected information, not only the changed line.

The IRS says filing a superseding return and paying additional tax by that date may help avoid interest or penalties. Calculate the amount from the corrected return and keep proof of payment and electronic acceptance.
Filed after the original due date: Form 1040-X
Once the original return has been filed, the IRS says to wait until it is filed before submitting Form 1040-X for a qualifying substantive change. Form 1040-X can be used for changes such as:
- filing status;
- income;
- deductions;
- credits;
- dependents;
- other taxes; and
- withholding.
Attach copies of forms and schedules that were changed or omitted. Explain the reason for each change and recalculate the federal tax, payments and refund or balance due. An amended return does not automatically suspend an amount shown as due on the original return, so follow the IRS payment instructions while the amendment is pending.

Errors that may not require an amended return
The IRS catches and corrects many mathematical errors during processing. If the IRS asks for a missing form or information, provide what the notice requests. If it proposes a change, the notice may provide a way to agree without filing Form 1040-X. Read the notice before submitting a second correction, and use its response deadline.

Refund-claim deadline and processing time
For a U.S. federal refund claim, Form 1040-X generally must be filed within three years after the original return was filed or two years after the tax was paid, whichever is later. The IRS states that exceptions apply to certain losses, credits, bad debts and other situations. An early-filed return is generally treated as filed on the due date for this calculation, subject to the detailed rules.
The IRS advises allowing up to 16 weeks for routine Form 1040-X processing. That is an estimate for processing, not an extension of the filing deadline. Use the IRS amended-return status tool to monitor the submission where eligible.
Federal changes and state returns
A federal correction can change state income, deductions or tax. Contact the relevant state tax agency and follow its separate procedure. Do not attach a state return to a federal amended return unless the state agency specifically directs you to do so.
United Kingdom: Self Assessment
HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) generally allows online or paper corrections to a Self Assessment return within 12 months of the Self Assessment deadline. If you filed online, HMRC says you must wait 72 hours after filing before making an online update.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

The route depends on what happened: reporting omitted income is not the same as claiming overpayment relief. HMRC’s overpayment-relief route can generally be used up to four years after the end of the relevant tax year, subject to its conditions. Check the tax year, the original filing method and the current HMRC instructions before posting a correction.

India: revised returns
India’s Income Tax Department describes a revised return as available within 12 months from the end of the relevant tax year, or before completion of assessment, whichever is earlier. The terminology and limits are specific to Indian law and the applicable assessment year.
The department’s stated rule also refers to a fee under section 234-I for the later filing period after nine months and before 12 months. Confirm whether that fee, the assessment status and the filing window apply to your return. Use the department’s prescribed electronic process and retain the acknowledgement of the revised return.
Singapore: individual income tax
IRAS says an individual who filed online may re-file once by 18 April before receiving the tax bill. After a bill has been issued, amendments generally must be filed within 30 days from the date of the Notice of Assessment.
The 18 April cutoff comes from Singapore tax-season guidance and may not fit every filing scheme. The guidance excludes some Direct Notice of Assessment cases. Check whether your filing was online, whether a bill has been issued and whether your case falls within an excluded category before re-filing.
Canada: individual T1 returns
For a Canadian individual T1 return, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) says to wait for the Notice of Assessment before requesting a change. Depending on eligibility, use the CRA’s Change my return service, ReFILE through participating tax software or paper Form T1-ADJ with supporting documents.
The availability of each electronic route depends on the tax year, the type of change and the taxpayer’s account. The CRA example describing this process was first published in 2022; verify current eligibility, document requirements and time limits in the live CRA service before filing.

Japan: correction request or revised return
Japan’s National Tax Agency distinguishes between two post-deadline situations:
- Request for correction: use this when too much tax was paid or the refund was too small.
- Revised return: use this when too little tax was paid or too much tax was refunded.
For the described overpayment situation, a request for correction is generally available within five years from the statutory filing deadline. The agency’s rules are tied to the statutory deadline and the direction of the error, so select the procedure that matches whether you owe more or are seeking money back.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Prepare the correction before you submit
- Reconstruct the original filing. Obtain the filed return, submission receipt, assessment or notice and payment records.
- Identify the exact changed items. Compare the original figures with corrected figures for income, withholding, deductions, credits, dependents and tax.
- Gather evidence. Use wage statements, invoices, receipts, bank records, eligibility documents and any schedule supporting the change.
- Recalculate the complete return. A change to one line can alter taxable income, credits, tax, payment due and refund.
- Choose the official route. Use the authority’s portal, prescribed form, paper address or notice-response channel—not an informal email or an unrelated filing.
- Submit supporting schedules. Include every form or schedule changed or omitted and translate or explain documents if the authority requires it.
- Pay additional tax promptly. If the corrected return shows more tax, follow the authority’s payment instructions and check whether interest or penalties continue while the correction is processed.
- Save proof. Keep the final corrected return, attachments, acknowledgement number, payment confirmation and a copy of every notice.
How the type of error changes the decision
More income or tax than originally reported
File the correction promptly through the applicable route and pay the additional amount. Waiting can increase interest or late-payment charges. Do not assume that submitting an amendment cancels the original balance or stops collection.
Less income or tax, or a larger refund
Use the authority’s refund or correction procedure and check its limitation period before filing. A refund claim may have a different deadline from a return correction. Keep proof of the original filing and payment date because the authority may use those dates to test timeliness.
Filing status, dependents or credits
These changes can affect several calculations at once and often require a complete amended return plus eligibility documents. Recheck any related state, provincial or local return.
Arithmetic or transcription mistake
First check whether the authority normally corrects mathematical errors during processing. If it has issued a notice, respond as directed rather than creating a second, conflicting return.

What to do if the deadline is today
Use the authority’s official electronic channel if it is open and you can verify acceptance. Submit the complete corrected return, not an explanation alone. If payment is required, make it through the approved payment service and save the timestamp or confirmation number. A draft saved in software is not a filed return.
If the portal rejects the return, record the error message, confirm that the tax year and form version are correct and follow the authority’s emergency or paper-filing instructions. Do not repeatedly transmit different versions without determining which submission was accepted.
After submission: tracking and related returns
Processing can take longer than an original electronic return. In the United States, the IRS estimate for Form 1040-X is up to 16 weeks. Other authorities may provide different status tools or no immediate confirmation beyond an acknowledgement.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Using a country’s form or deadline as if it applied worldwide.
- Using an extended filing date when the rule refers to the original statutory deadline.
- Filing an amendment before the original return exists.
- Submitting only the changed page instead of the complete corrected return and required schedules.
- Ignoring a notice that already explains how to provide the missing information.
- Failing to pay additional tax while waiting for an amended-return decision.
- Assuming a refund deadline is the same as an amendment deadline.
- Forgetting state, provincial or local consequences.
- Discarding the original return, acknowledgement or payment evidence.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change a tax return after I filed it?
Often yes, but the method depends on the authority and timing. Before the original deadline, some systems accept a superseding or replacement return; after it, use the prescribed amendment, adjustment, revised-return or correction-claim process.
Do I need to amend a return for a math error?
Not always. Some authorities correct arithmetic during processing. If the authority sends a notice, follow its instructions before filing another return.
Does filing an amended return stop tax or penalties?
Usually not automatically. If the corrected return shows additional tax, pay through the authority’s approved channel and check the applicable interest and penalty rules.
