How to Review Your Life Insurance After a Major Life Change

By TheFinanceBase Team 10 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A major life change is a reason to review your life insurance, not an automatic reason to buy a new policy. Start by reading the policy, listing the financial responsibilities your household would still face if you died, checking beneficiaries and contact details, and asking the insurer or a licensed agent what your contract permits. The right outcome may be more coverage, less coverage, a policy change, or simply an updated record.

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) summarizes the principle this way: “As your life situation changes through the years, so do your insurance needs.” Its consumer guidance is U.S.-focused; your policy wording and state rules control the result.

Which life changes should trigger a review?

Review your policy whenever the people who depend on you, the debts they would inherit or need to repay, your income, or your long-term plans change. NAIC guidance specifically identifies events such as birth, adoption, marriage, divorce, remarriage, a new mortgage, a new job, retirement and death as reasons to reassess coverage.

Life change What to reassess Possible result
Marriage or remarriage Income replacement for a spouse, joint debts, housing costs and beneficiary designations Update beneficiaries, add or increase coverage, or keep the policy if existing protection is sufficient
Divorce Who still depends on your income, court or settlement obligations, ownership and beneficiary instructions Change beneficiaries or ownership, reduce coverage, or retain a policy when support obligations continue
Birth or adoption Childcare, lost income, education goals and the period during which a child will depend on you Increase coverage, add a policy, or revise beneficiaries and records
Buying a home or taking on debt Mortgage balance, other loans and whether existing coverage lasts as long as the obligation Increase or extend coverage, or use existing coverage if it already matches the obligation
Changing jobs Employer-provided insurance, the amount that would end when employment ends, and any individual policy you own Replace a lost workplace benefit, supplement it, or confirm that no change is needed
Retirement, debt payoff or children finishing college Whether anyone still needs income support and which obligations have disappeared Keep, reduce or stop coverage only after checking policy costs, guarantees and consequences
Death of a beneficiary, owner or dependent Beneficiary order, ownership, trustee or estate arrangements and remaining household needs File the required changes with the insurer and obtain legal advice when an estate, trust or court order is involved

A move, major change in income, new business responsibility or change in who provides care can also justify a review. The test is practical: would the financial effect of your death be materially different now from when you last chose the policy?

How to complete a life-insurance review

1. Assemble the documents before making a decision

Collect the full policy contract and any amendments, your latest annual or account statement, current beneficiary designation, premium notices and details of employer-provided coverage. If you have more than one policy, include every individual and workplace policy. Record the insurer, policy number, type of coverage, death benefit, premium, payment frequency and policy owner.

Do not rely on an old summary or memory. The contract may contain options, exclusions, guarantees and deadlines that do not appear on a brief statement. If you cannot find a policy, contact the insurer or your state insurance department for help locating records.

2. List the financial needs that would remain

Build the list from the household’s actual obligations rather than starting with a standard income multiple. Consider:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Income your dependents would lose and how long replacement income might be needed
  • Mortgage and other outstanding debts
  • Childcare and the cost of raising children
  • Education goals and other costs that depend on your future earnings
  • Essential household expenses for a surviving spouse, partner, child or other dependent
  • Any continuing support obligation created by a divorce agreement or court order

NAIC materials recommend considering future income, child-rearing costs and large outstanding debts. They do not establish one universal formula that fits every household, so document your assumptions and revisit them when they change.

3. Compare needs with the policy’s amount and duration

Compare the needs list with the death benefit and the period for which the policy is in force. Ask whether the benefit would address the obligations that matter most and whether the coverage lasts long enough. A term policy covers a stated period and may fit a limited obligation such as a mortgage. Cash-value insurance is designed as permanent coverage and has different features, values and costs.

Include all policies in the comparison, but do not assume that employer coverage will remain available after a job change. Ask the employer or insurer what happens when employment ends and whether any conversion or continuation option exists under the specific plan.

4. Read the policy mechanics, not only the face amount

Use the contract and the insurer’s current statement to answer these questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Can the premium change, or is it guaranteed for a stated period?
  • Can the death benefit change under the contract?
  • Which values or benefits are guaranteed and which depend on non-guaranteed assumptions?
  • If the policy has cash value, how can it be accessed and what effect could access have on the policy?
  • Can the policy be converted, and what deadlines, eligible products or conditions apply?
  • What happens if a premium is missed or paid late?
  • Who owns the policy, and does an assignment, trust or other ownership arrangement apply?

Ask the insurer to explain any item you cannot find or interpret. A current illustration or statement may show values that are not guaranteed; treat those differently from contractual guarantees.

5. Check beneficiaries and contact information

Review both primary and contingent beneficiaries. Confirm the spelling of every name, relationship, address, telephone number and other identifying information the insurer requests. NAIC’s September 12, 2023 beneficiary guidance recommends checking policies once a year and after life changes to make sure all beneficiaries are included and their contact information is correct.

Ask the insurer what form, signature, notarization or other documentation is required and when a change becomes effective. Do not assume that a will, divorce or marriage automatically changes a policy designation. Ownership, a court order, a trust or state law may affect the result, so obtain legal advice for a complicated estate or family situation.

Be cautious about naming a minor directly. The NAIC beneficiary page available in 2026 says insurers generally do not pay benefits directly to minors and suggests considering an estate or trust, subject to applicable law. Ask a qualified attorney about the arrangement before submitting a designation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Tell the people who may need to claim the policy

Tell beneficiaries or a trusted adviser which company holds each policy, where the policy documents are stored and whom to contact. Keep a current copy with your estate documents and update the location when records move. A policy that nobody can identify or claim can delay payment; NAIC notes that tens of millions of dollars in life-insurance death benefits go unclaimed each year, without stating an exact total.

7. Ask the insurer or a licensed agent for policy-specific options

Before changing, replacing, reducing or cancelling coverage, ask for written answers to questions such as:

  • What changes are available under this contract?
  • Would an increase require new medical or financial underwriting?
  • Can the term, amount, premium or payment schedule be changed?
  • What guaranteed and non-guaranteed values would apply after the change?
  • What conversion, reinstatement or other continuation rights exist?
  • What would happen to cash value, ownership and beneficiaries if the policy were altered or replaced?
  • Are there policy-specific charges, tax issues or filing requirements I should discuss with an adviser?
  • Which documents and signatures are required, and when will the change take effect?

An agent can explain the contract, but legal and tax questions may require an attorney or tax professional. Keep the insurer’s illustrations and correspondence with your policy records.

How to estimate the amount of coverage you need now

There is no single correct coverage number for every household. Start with the financial gap your death would create, then consider how existing savings, other insurance and assets would affect that gap. The calculation should be understandable enough that you can update it when a debt is paid, a child leaves home or income changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Income support

Identify who relies on your earnings and the period for which support would be needed. A young family may need support through childcare and school years; a household nearing retirement may have a shorter or different income-replacement need. Include benefits that would end when you die and income that a survivor could realistically replace.

Housing and debt

List the mortgage, personal loans, credit obligations and other debts that would remain. Decide whether the intended benefit is to pay them off, provide cash flow while they are repaid, or do both. Match the policy duration to the period in which the obligation matters.

Children and dependents

Estimate ongoing childcare, basic living costs and education goals for each dependent. Adoption, a new child or a change in care responsibilities can materially alter the timeline. Revisit the estimate as children become financially independent.

Keep, adjust, add or replace: comparing the available paths

After documenting needs and policy mechanics, compare the realistic choices on the same criteria. NAIC materials identify amount and duration, premiums, guarantees, cash-value access, conversion and beneficiary or ownership implications as relevant review factors.

Option When it may fit Questions to resolve first
Keep the policy unchanged The benefit, duration and cost still match current obligations Are beneficiaries current, and are premiums and benefits still affordable and understood?
Adjust the existing policy The contract permits a change that better matches the new need Will the change alter guarantees, premiums, cash value, conversion rights or ownership?
Add another policy Existing coverage remains useful but a new obligation creates a gap How will the combined premiums, durations and beneficiary designations work together?
Replace the policy The existing contract no longer fits and a new one offers a demonstrably better match Is the new policy approved and in force, and what happens to the old policy’s guarantees, values and costs?
Reduce or discontinue coverage Debts are paid, dependents are independent or income needs have fallen What obligations remain, and what contract consequences follow from reducing or ending it?

Do not cancel an existing policy merely because a replacement application was submitted. First confirm that the replacement has been issued, is effective and meets your needs; then ask both insurers about the exact transition steps. New coverage can involve underwriting, different premiums or different contract terms, and approval is not automatic.

Special considerations after common life events

Marriage or remarriage

Review how much income each spouse contributes, which debts are joint, and whether either spouse has children or other dependents from an earlier relationship. Update primary and contingent beneficiaries deliberately rather than assuming a marriage certificate changes the policy. If a trust, prenuptial agreement or prior designation exists, have an attorney review how the documents fit together.

Divorce

Divorce can reduce one household’s need for coverage while creating continuing support obligations for a former spouse or children. Read the divorce decree and settlement agreement, identify any required ownership or beneficiary arrangement, and ask the insurer what it will accept. A designation may not change automatically, and a court order can create obligations that are not obvious from the policy summary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Birth or adoption

Add the child’s financial needs to the income, childcare and education plan. Confirm whether the policy should name a child directly or use a legally appropriate trust or estate arrangement. Update records after adoption paperwork is complete and keep proof of the designation change.

Home purchase or a large loan

Compare the new mortgage or loan balance with the policy’s amount and remaining term. Decide whether the household needs the debt paid off, continued income while it is repaid, or both. A term policy may align with a limited obligation, but the contract’s actual end date and conversion provisions matter.

Job change

Obtain the new employer’s coverage details and determine what happened to the old workplace benefit. Ask about eligibility, the amount insured, the end date after leaving employment and any conversion or continuation provision. Do not count workplace coverage as permanent individual protection without confirming its terms.

Retirement, mortgage payoff or an empty nest

When earned income ends, a mortgage is paid or children finish college, the financial gap may be smaller. Recalculate rather than cancelling reflexively. A permanent policy may still have a purpose, while a term policy that covered a finished obligation may no longer be necessary; the answer depends on remaining dependents, policy costs and contract features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common review mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Using a rule of thumb as the answer. A simple income multiple can miss debt, childcare, education and the policy’s duration. Build a household-specific list instead.
  • Assuming every life event requires a new policy. Some changes only require a beneficiary or contact update; others may justify more, less or different coverage.
  • Looking only at the death benefit. Premium guarantees, non-guaranteed values, cash-value access and conversion rights can change the decision.
  • Leaving beneficiaries unfindable. Correct names and contact details, tell a trusted person where records are kept and review them annually.
  • Changing a designation without checking restrictions. Ownership, trusts, divorce orders, court requirements and state rules can affect what the insurer will accept.
  • Dropping old coverage too soon. Wait until replacement coverage is issued and effective, and understand the old policy’s consequences.
  • Ignoring a minor beneficiary issue. Ask about an estate or trust structure and obtain legal advice rather than assuming direct payment is straightforward.
  • Failing to document the decision. Keep the needs calculation, insurer answers, approved forms and effective dates with the policy.

How often should you review your policy?

Check beneficiaries and their contact information at least once a year, as NAIC recommended in its September 12, 2023 guidance. Perform a broader coverage review after every material change in family, income, debt, employment or retirement status. The NAIC Buyer’s Guide also recommends reviewing a policy every few years and asking whether the benefit still meets your needs.

Set a calendar reminder, keep a current policy copy with your estate records and note the date of your last insurer conversation. A review is complete only when the coverage, beneficiaries, ownership and records all reflect the household that exists now.
