Before you click Pay, inspect every checkbox, preset amount, renewal line and final total. A free trial can become a recurring charge, a protection plan may be an optional add-on, and a tip prompt can change the amount you authorize. Confirm what you selected and the complete amount immediately before submitting payment.
U.S. federal guidance can help you spot disclosure and consent problems, but subscription, insurance and fee rules also vary by state and locality. Treat this as a practical review method, not universal legal advice.

The three decisions hidden in many checkouts
Most checkout screens combine three different decisions:
- Recurring service: a trial, membership or introductory price that may renew automatically.
- Protection or insurance: an optional plan covering a trip, purchase or other risk, with its own exclusions and price.
- Tip: a gratuity prompt that may display preset percentages, a preset dollar amount or a custom field.
Review each separately. A box being preselected deserves attention, but a preselected setting is not automatically unlawful in every situation. What matters is whether the terms are clear, your consent is informed, and the amount you authorize matches what the business disclosed.

Use a 60-second final-check routine
- Read the itemized order. Identify the base product or service, taxes, shipping, fees, protection plans, tips and any recurring line.
- Look for future dates and frequencies. Words such as “renews,” “monthly,” “annual,” “after the trial,” or “billed every” signal a later charge.
- Inspect every selection control. Checkboxes, toggles, radio buttons and drop-downs can add services or change a tip.
- Recalculate the amount. Compare the displayed total with the price you expected, including selected add-ons and taxes.
- Save evidence. Keep the confirmation email, terms, cancellation instructions and a screenshot or PDF of the final order when practical.
- Set a reminder. Put a trial-end or renewal date in a phone calendar; a paper planner works too.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says the final amount should be prominently disclosed before a business asks for payment, including taxes, shipping and optional add-ons selected by the customer. Its examples distinguish mandatory charges from optional charges, so read the line items rather than assuming every fee is removable. See the FTC fee FAQ.
Before entering payment details
Ask yourself what you are buying today and what, if anything, you are agreeing to later. Identify the merchant’s legal or billing name, the amount that will be charged now, and whether the same payment method will be stored for future billing. Look for a separate link to terms, renewal disclosures or cancellation instructions rather than relying on a headline such as “free,” “from,” or “starting at.” If a page uses several steps, review the order summary again on the last step; an option chosen earlier may reappear there.
Use a second device or a calculator if the layout is crowded. A written list of the expected base price, tax, shipping, add-ons and total makes it easier to notice a mismatch. If a material term is missing, contact the merchant before paying and ask for the amount, frequency, renewal date and cancellation method in writing.
Decision 1: Is a free trial or introductory offer really recurring?
A “free” or discounted period can still require payment details and can convert to a paid plan when it ends. The FTC’s September 2024 consumer guidance recommends checking the trial length, the amount and frequency after the trial, the renewal date and the cancellation instructions before signing up. It also advises consumers to “Watch for pre-checked boxes.” According to that guidance, a checkmark might authorize future charges, an additional product or information sharing.
Read the renewal terms before entering your card
- Trial length: Note the exact end date or the event that ends the trial. “30 days” can be calculated from the signup date rather than the end of a calendar month.
- Post-trial price: Record the amount you will pay after the introductory period, not only the first charge.
- Frequency: Determine whether billing is weekly, monthly, annually or on another schedule.
- Renewal timing: Check whether the first paid charge occurs at the end of the trial, on a stated date or after a notice period.
- Cancellation method: Save the stated path, such as an account setting, online form, email request or telephone number.
- Notice requirements: Look for a deadline before renewal and any requirement to cancel a separate add-on.
Do not rely on the word “free” alone. A trial may be free only for the initial period, while shipping, taxes or an attached service can still appear at checkout. The amount shown at payment should reflect every selected charge.
How to stop a free trial from charging you
- Write down the signup date, trial end date, expected renewal amount and billing frequency.
- Open the account’s subscription or billing page and find the cancellation control before the trial ends.
- Follow the stated steps completely. Stop only when the service displays a confirmation or supplies a confirmation email or number.
- Save the confirmation and the terms that applied when you canceled.
- Check your card or bank statement around the expected renewal date and again on the next statement.
If a charge continues after you requested cancellation, the FTC advises contacting your card issuer about disputing the charge and keeping related records. You can also report suspected deceptive practices through the FTC’s consumer channels. The guidance and record-keeping advice appear in Getting In and Out of Free Trials, Auto-Renewals, and Negative Option Subscriptions.
Did you sign up for a subscription?
Search your confirmation email and account settings for terms such as “membership,” “renews,” “recurring,” “next billing date” and “manage plan.” Check the merchant name on your statement; it may differ from the website’s brand name. If you cannot find a clear record, contact the business promptly and ask for the enrollment date, terms, renewal schedule and cancellation method in writing.

Also check whether the subscription was bundled with another purchase or started through an app store, marketplace or payment wallet. The cancellation location may be different from the website where you first saw the offer. Do not assume deleting an app, closing a browser tab or removing a saved card cancels the underlying agreement; look for an explicit cancellation confirmation.
What the current federal rule history means
The FTC announced a final “click-to-cancel” rule in October 2024. The announcement described requirements intended to make ending recurring subscriptions easier, but it is not enough by itself to establish that those requirements are operative now. The Associated Press reported on July 11, 2025, that a federal appeals court blocked the rule shortly before it was due to take effect. Read the FTC announcement together with the Associated Press report, and check for later court or agency developments. Do not assume the announced requirements automatically govern every cancellation today.
The FTC said complaints about unwanted subscription practices averaged nearly 70 per day in 2024, up from 42 per day in 2021. Those figures describe complaints in the cited announcement and are not a current universal complaint rate.
Decision 2: Is protection or insurance optional, and what does it cover?
Protection plans and insurance are separate choices from the main purchase. They can be useful for a particular risk, but the value depends on coverage, exclusions, price and your existing protection. Do not accept one merely because it appears beside the checkout button.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Identify the selection and the price
- Find the exact name of the plan and whether the control says “add,” “decline,” “remove” or “included.”
- Determine whether the option is affirmatively selected or requires you to select it.
- Read the one-time or recurring cost and whether taxes are added.
- Check the coverage period, claim deadline, deductible, limits and exclusions.
- Ask whether a credit-card benefit, homeowners policy, renters policy or another service already covers the same risk.
The FTC’s May 2025 fee FAQ uses online trip protection as an example of an optional ancillary service. A customer must affirmatively select it; if selected, its charge must be included in the final amount before payment. The example does not mean every insurance product has identical legal treatment, so read the plan terms and applicable state requirements.
Compare an add-on without assuming it is a good deal
| Question | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| What is covered? | Events, items, people and dates | A plan may cover only named risks or a limited period. |
| What is excluded? | Pre-existing conditions, causes, destinations, activities or claim circumstances | An exclusion can remove the protection you expected. |
| What does it cost? | One-time price, recurring price, taxes and refund terms | The cheapest-looking option may create a later charge or be nonrefundable. |
| How do you claim? | Notice deadline, documents, contact method and resolution process | Missed procedures can affect eligibility. |
| Is it selected? | Checkbox or toggle state before payment | A selected option should appear in the final total. |
Mandatory fees versus optional add-ons
Some charges are required to complete a purchase; others are optional services you can decline. The FTC fee FAQ explains that the business must disclose the total price prominently before payment and must include optional add-ons that the customer selected. It also notes that businesses must comply with applicable state and local requirements, which may provide greater protection. Because the cited federal material is not a state-specific insurance opinion, consult your state regulator or the plan documents for local questions.
A label such as “recommended,” “安心,” or a bright colored button does not answer whether an option is mandatory. Look for a genuine decline path and confirm that removing the plan reduces the total. If the merchant says the plan is required, ask why and request the term that makes it required. Keep that response with the order records.

Decision 3: Did the tip prompt change your amount?
Tip screens commonly present preset percentages, a preset dollar amount, “custom tip” and “no tip.” The available federal sources do not establish a tip-specific legal rule. Treat the prompt as a practical accuracy check: verify the selection, calculate the tip and confirm the total yourself.
Check the preset and the math
- Read the amount or percentage that is highlighted, not just the label on the button.
- Confirm the percentage is applied to the intended base, such as the pre-tax amount or the full bill; the screen may not make this obvious.
- Select “custom” or “no tip” if that is your choice, then watch for the total to change.
- Compare the final total with your own calculation before authorizing payment.
- Keep the receipt showing the tip and total.
A design that makes one option visually dominant can steer choices. The FTC’s 2022 staff report on dark patterns discusses interface interference, hidden subscriptions, drip pricing and transactions users did not intend, but it is not tip-specific. You can read Bringing Dark Patterns to Light for those broader examples. Do not treat the report as a statement that a particular tip layout is unlawful.
Review the receipt after the transaction, especially for table-service, delivery or self-service systems that offer a second tipping screen. A pending authorization may show one amount while the posted transaction later reflects another. Compare the posted amount with the receipt and raise a discrepancy promptly with the merchant and, if needed, your card issuer.
How to compare the offer with what you expected
Use a simple two-column check before payment:
| Checkout detail | Your expected value |
|---|---|
| Base product or service | Advertised or quoted price |
| Recurring charge | Amount and frequency after any trial or promotion |
| Renewal date | Date you marked on your calendar |
| Protection plan | Declined, or selected with a price you accept |
| Tip | Your chosen percentage or dollar amount |
| Taxes, shipping and mandatory fees | Expected jurisdiction-specific amounts |
| Final total | Amount you are prepared to authorize now |
If any cell is unclear, pause. Open the terms, ask the merchant for clarification or remove the optional item. A discount that expires, an annual renewal or a protection charge should never be inferred from a headline price.
What to save after payment or cancellation
- Order confirmation with the itemized amount.
- Terms showing trial, renewal, coverage or refund conditions.
- Cancellation request, confirmation number and date.
- Chat transcripts or emails with the merchant.
- Statements showing the original charge and any later charge.
Store these records until the trial has ended, the next expected billing date has passed and any refund or cancellation is resolved. Monitoring matters because a cancellation request and a successful stop in billing are not always visible at the same moment on a statement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse descriptive file names and note the time zone if a deadline matters. Preserve the original confirmation rather than only a cropped screenshot, and redact unnecessary card numbers before sharing documents with anyone. If a merchant changes its terms later, retain the version that applied when you enrolled.
If a charge is wrong or continues after cancellation
- Contact the merchant using the cancellation or support method in the terms. State the date, amount, account identifier and the remedy you want.
- Keep proof of the request and the response. Avoid sending full card numbers by ordinary email.
- Watch for a pending authorization becoming a posted charge.
- If the charge remains after cancellation or is otherwise unauthorized, contact your card issuer promptly about its dispute process. Provide the confirmation and correspondence.
- For suspected deceptive subscription practices, use the FTC’s consumer-reporting information and retain your records.
Deadlines and rights can depend on the payment method and jurisdiction. A federal source describing a remedy does not replace the terms of your card agreement or state law.

How negative-option practices are evaluated
In a 2023 Consumer Financial Protection Bureau circular, the agency wrote: “A seller offering a negative option program risks violating the law if the seller (1) does not clearly and conspicuously disclose the material terms of the negative option offer to the consumer, (2) does not obtain the consumer’s informed consent, or (3) misleads consumers who wish to cancel, erects unreasonable barriers to cancellation, or impedes the effective operation of promised cancellation procedures.” The circular concerns covered persons and applicable consumer-financial laws; it is not a universal rule for every checkout transaction. Read the CFPB Circular 2023-01 for its scope.
Questions to ask customer support
When a page is ambiguous, ask focused questions instead of accepting a general assurance. “What exact amount will be charged after the trial, and how often?” identifies the recurring term. “Is this protection plan optional, and what happens to the total if I decline it?” addresses selection and price. “What is the cancellation deadline and what confirmation will I receive?” creates a record of the process. Ask the representative to send the answer by email or to identify the applicable term in the written agreement.
Recommended Free Tools
Record the date, channel and representative’s name or ticket number. If the answer conflicts with the checkout screen, rely on neither assumption nor memory: pause the purchase until the written terms and final total are consistent.
A repeatable checklist for future purchases
- Is there a trial or introductory price?
- What will be charged afterward, how often and on what date?
- Is any checkbox or toggle already selected?
- Can I decline the protection plan, and what exactly does it cover?
- What tip amount or percentage is selected?
- Does the displayed final total include taxes, shipping and selected add-ons?
- What is the cancellation path and deadline?
- Where will I find written confirmation?
- What reminder will alert me before renewal?
Apply the checklist before entering payment details when possible, and repeat the final-total check immediately before submitting. That small pause separates the service you intended to buy from extras or future obligations you did not mean to authorize.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I stop a free trial from charging me?
Before entering payment details, record the trial end date, post-trial amount, billing frequency and cancellation method. Cancel through the stated account, form, email or phone process before the deadline, complete every step, and save the confirmation. Check statements around the expected renewal; if billing continues, keep the records and contact the merchant and your card issuer about available dispute procedures.
How can I tell if a checkout add-on is optional?
Look for wording such as “add,” “decline,” “remove” or “included,” and test whether declining it changes the total. An option that must be affirmatively selected is treated as optional in the FTC’s trip-protection example, but the exact legal treatment can vary. Read the plan terms and ask the merchant to confirm in writing.

Search your confirmation email, account billing page and statements for “membership,” “recurring,” “renews” or “next billing date.” If the record is unclear, ask the merchant for the enrollment date, applicable terms, renewal schedule and cancellation path. Deleting an app or removing a card does not by itself establish that a subscription was canceled.

What should I check before I submit payment?
Review the itemized base price, taxes, shipping, mandatory fees, selected protection, tip amount and final total. Then check any trial or renewal date, recurring amount and cancellation instructions. Confirm that the amount on the final screen is the amount you intend to authorize and save the confirmation.
Is a pre-checked subscription or insurance box automatically illegal?
No single federal rule makes every preselected setting automatically unlawful. A preselection is a reason to stop and inspect disclosure, consent, the option’s price and the final amount. Applicable federal, state and local requirements depend on the transaction and business.
Does the FTC click-to-cancel rule apply right now?
The FTC announced a final rule in October 2024, but the Associated Press reported on July 11, 2025, that a federal appeals court blocked it shortly before its expected effective date. Do not treat the announcement alone as proof that those requirements currently govern every cancellation; check later agency or court developments and the terms of your agreement.
What if the tip total is different from what I selected?
Compare the highlighted preset, the percentage or dollar amount, the calculation base and the receipt. Check whether a pending authorization later became a posted charge for a different amount. Contact the merchant promptly with the receipt, and ask your card issuer about its dispute process if the discrepancy is not resolved.
What records should I keep?
Keep the itemized order, applicable terms, screenshots or a PDF of the final checkout, confirmation email, cancellation request and confirmation, support messages, and statements showing later charges. Retain them until the trial or renewal period and any refund or dispute are resolved.
The Bottom Line
Separate the checkout into recurring service, protection and tip decisions. Read the renewal and cancellation terms, verify whether add-ons are optional, calculate the tip, and compare every line with the final amount before paying. Save the terms and confirmations, set a renewal reminder, and monitor statements afterward. Federal guidance is useful, but the rules and remedies that apply can differ by state, locality, payment method and transaction.
