How to Respond to a GST Notice Online (Including DRC-06) and Track Your Reply

To respond to a GST notice online, first identify the notice form, proceeding, reference number, tax period and deadline printed on that notice. Open that same case in the official GST Portal and use the reply action attached to it. For a demand show-cause notice, the prescribed response is generally FORM GST DRC-06 under rule 142(4), but DRC-06 is not a universal form for every GST notice.

After you submit, save the acknowledgement or reference identifier and a copy of the filed reply. To track progress, return to the same proceeding record and check the reply, status, orders and communications shown there. A filed reply is not an order and does not by itself close or cancel a demand.

Start by identifying exactly what notice you received

GST notices do not all follow one online workflow. The form named on the notice, the proceeding that generated it and the action requested by the officer determine where you reply and what evidence you must provide. Before opening a reply screen, make a note of the following:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Notice or form number: for example, a demand show-cause notice that calls for FORM GST DRC-06.
  • Reference number and issue date: copy these exactly, including punctuation and leading zeroes.
  • Financial year and tax period: record the year, month or quarter stated in the notice.
  • Issuing authority: note the commissionerate, officer or other authority named on the notice.
  • Reply deadline and directions: use the date and submission instructions printed on this notice, not a deadline copied from a different case.
  • Issues raised: list each tax, interest, penalty, classification, return or documentation point that requires an answer.

Keep the original notice open while you work. A notice can contain more than one issue, and the portal record may display a shortened subject line that does not show every allegation.

Why the form matters

A demand show-cause notice is different from a registration clarification, audit communication, appeal counter-reply or an enforcement notice connected with another proceeding. The correct response button, fields and follow-up records can differ. Do not select DRC-06 merely because the matter concerns a tax demand; select it when the notice and the case record direct you to that form.

When DRC-06 is the right response

The CBIC forms compilation identifies FORM GST DRC-06 as Reply to the Show Cause Notice under rule 142(4). The form is designed for the taxpayer’s response to the demand show-cause proceeding. It records the GSTIN and name, notice reference and date, financial year, written reply, uploaded documents, a request for personal hearing and verification by an authorised signatory.

DRC-06 section What to enter or attach How to prepare it
Taxpayer identity GSTIN and registered name Check that the details match the registration and the notice.
Notice particulars Notice reference, date and financial year Copy the identifiers from the notice rather than retyping from memory.
Reply Your factual and legal response Answer each allegation under a separate heading and cross-reference evidence.
Documents uploaded A description of the files supplied with the reply Use clear file names and explain which issue each file supports.
Personal hearing Your choice on whether a personal hearing is requested Make the choice deliberately; explain in the reply why a hearing is needed if appropriate.
Verification Authorised-signatory declaration and submission details Confirm that the signatory is authorised for the GSTIN and review every field before signing.

The verification text in the official form states: “I hereby solemnly affirm and declare that the information given hereinabove is true and correct to the best of my knowledge and belief and nothing has been concealed therefrom.” Treat that declaration as a serious certification. A person who submits on behalf of the business should have the authority required for that GST registration.

Prepare the response before opening the submission screen

Drafting in a separate document reduces the risk of a session timeout or an accidental submission of an incomplete answer. Build an issue-by-issue file with these parts:

  1. Opening identification: state the GSTIN, notice reference, date, financial year and proceeding to which the reply relates.
  2. Short position statement: say whether you accept, partly accept or dispute each amount or allegation.
  3. Issue-by-issue explanation: use the same numbering as the notice. Give the calculation, transaction facts, return period and legal basis relevant to each point.
  4. Reconciliation: where figures differ, show the notice amount, your amount, the difference and the records that explain it.
  5. Relief requested: state the precise action you want the officer to take, such as dropping an unsupported proposal or correcting a demonstrable calculation.
  6. Attachment index: list every file, its date or period and the paragraph or issue it supports.

Use records that can be checked: returns, ledgers, invoices, e-way records where relevant, payment challans, contracts, correspondence and prior orders. Do not upload a large undifferentiated folder. A clearly labelled index lets the officer connect an attachment to a specific assertion.

Check file and identity details

  • Open each file after exporting it and confirm that it is readable, complete and for the correct tax period.
  • Use names such as 01_Notice.pdf, 02_Return_Reconciliation_FY2024-25.xlsx and 03_Invoices_Issue2.pdf, subject to the file types accepted by the live portal.
  • Remove unrelated customer data and unnecessary personal information. Retain the original files securely in your records.
  • Check that the GSTIN, legal name, financial year and notice number are consistent in the reply, attachment index and uploaded documents.

The DRC-06 form itself does not establish a universal attachment size, file-count or file-type limit. Confirm the limits displayed by the current case screen and, if a file is rejected, follow the portal’s stated format or size instruction rather than relying on an old manual.

How to file a GST notice reply online

The exact labels can change as the GST Portal is updated. Use the case or notice record associated with your notice and follow the action offered there.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Sign in through the official GST Portal. Use your own authorised credentials. Never give a password, one-time password or signing credential to someone who claims to be able to file the response for you.
  2. Locate the notice or proceeding. Open the area of the portal that lists notices, orders or cases for the relevant GSTIN. Search or filter using the notice reference, financial year or tax period shown on the document. If several records look similar, compare the issue date and issuing authority before opening one.
  3. Read the online copy again. Download or view the notice and check its reply instructions, deadline and requested documents. A historical GST Network webinar describes viewing and downloading a demand notice before filing its DRC-06 response; its 26 February 2019 screen sequence is useful as a concept, but current menus may use different names.
  4. Select the reply action attached to that case. For a demand show-cause proceeding, this is the DRC-06 response when the notice directs it. Do not start a free-standing form outside the case if the portal provides a case-linked reply button.
  5. Complete the identification fields. Confirm the GSTIN and name, notice reference and date and financial year. Stop if the displayed identifiers do not match your notice; filing into the wrong proceeding can create a separate correction problem.
  6. Write or paste the prepared response. Preserve headings and numbering so that each notice allegation has a corresponding answer. Keep the language factual and specific. If the portal has a character limit, put the core answer in the field and identify the fuller signed explanation in an attachment, following any instructions shown on screen.
  7. Upload supporting documents. Add only the records that support the reply, check each upload for a successful completion message and review the displayed file list. The form’s documents-uploaded field is a record of what you supplied, not a substitute for explaining the evidence in the reply.
  8. Choose the personal-hearing option. Select the option that reflects your actual request. If an oral explanation is important because the dispute turns on reconciliation, interpretation or disputed facts, say so clearly in the written reply as well.
  9. Preview the complete form. Compare the preview with the notice, especially the GSTIN, reference number, financial year, amounts, attachment list and hearing choice. Correct typographical errors before proceeding.
  10. Verify and submit. The official DRC-06 requires verification by an authorised signatory. Use the signing or submission method that the current portal presents for this case; do not assume that a particular digital-signature or electronic-verification route remains unchanged from an older tutorial.
  11. Wait for the filing confirmation. Do not close the browser immediately after clicking submit. Save the on-screen acknowledgement, reference number or other filing identifier and note the date and time shown by the portal.
  12. Download the filed record. Save the submitted reply, acknowledgement and any generated PDF or receipt. If the portal provides a printable view rather than a download button, print it to a secure PDF and retain the original confirmation details.

How to confirm that the reply was actually filed

A completed upload is not the same as a filed reply. Confirmation should show that the portal accepted the submission, not merely that a file was selected. Look for a success message, a submitted timestamp, a generated acknowledgement or reference identifier and the reply appearing in the case history. The identifier may not be called an ARN; use the label displayed for this particular workflow.

Immediately compare the saved receipt with your working copy:

  • Does it identify the same GSTIN and notice reference?
  • Does the submitted date fall on or before the deadline printed on the notice?
  • Does the attachment list include every file you intended to send?
  • Does the case record now show the reply as submitted, received or an equivalent current label?

If you have only a draft, an upload-in-progress message or a browser error, treat the reply as unfiled until the case history or confirmation proves otherwise. Record screenshots or exported PDFs only after removing credentials and other sensitive information if you need to share them with an adviser.

How to track your GST notice reply

Return to the same proceeding record rather than searching for a generic status page. Open the notice or case and inspect the records made available after filing, such as the submitted reply, current status, orders and subsequent communications. The names and order of these tabs can change by proceeding.

What to check on each visit

  • Reply record: confirm that the filed text, date and acknowledgement or reference identifier remain attached to the correct notice.
  • Case status: read the exact current label and any explanatory text. Do not infer that an unfamiliar label means approval, rejection or closure without opening the associated communication.
  • Orders: look for an order issued by the tax officer and download the complete document, including annexures.
  • Communications: check for requests for more information, hearing notices or other directions that carry their own response date.
  • Notice history: compare later entries with the original reference and tax period so that a similarly titled proceeding is not mistaken for yours.

GSTN’s 26 February 2019 webinar demonstrates a demand-notice workflow that moves from viewing the notice to filing DRC-06 and later viewing or downloading the tax official’s order. That sequence supports returning to the case record, but it does not guarantee that today’s buttons or status labels look the same.

Why there is no single tracking menu for every notice

Portal navigation is tied to the proceeding. An official GST Portal tutorial for a different e-way-bill-unblocking enforcement process describes a route through Services > User Services > View Additional Notices/Orders. That route illustrates that a particular enforcement workflow can have its own access point; it is not a universal path for demand show-cause replies, registration notices, audits or appeals. Follow the menu and links displayed for your notice.

Deadlines, orders and what filing does not mean

Do not apply a blanket number of days to every GST notice. The operative date and response period are stated on the specific notice and may depend on the proceeding and the law in force. Submit within that stated period and retain evidence of the filing date. If the deadline has passed, do not alter the date or create a backdated document; seek qualified tax advice promptly and use any late-response or extension mechanism that the live proceeding provides.

Submitting DRC-06 records your response to a show-cause notice. It does not itself decide the tax, interest or penalty, and it does not guarantee that the proposal will be withdrawn. The officer may issue a later order or communication. Read every subsequent document and meet any new direction or hearing date separately.

Troubleshoot common filing and tracking problems

Problem Likely explanation Practical response
The notice cannot be found You may be in the wrong GSTIN, year or proceeding, or the record may be under a different notice category. Compare the reference, issue date, tax period and issuing authority with the notice; check the portal’s other notice or case views and retain a screenshot of the search result.
DRC-06 is not offered The notice may not be a demand show-cause proceeding, or the case may require a different action. Read the notice’s prescribed response and use the action attached to that case. Do not submit a mismatched form.
An attachment is rejected The file may exceed a current size limit, use an unsupported type or be corrupted. Read the live error message, create a legible file in the accepted format or split it logically, then upload again. Keep the original and the final uploaded version.
The page times out while drafting The session expired or the browser lost connectivity. Use your saved draft, sign in again, confirm that no partial submission occurred, and resubmit only after checking the case history.
Payment or return figures do not match The notice and your records may use different periods, adjustments or calculation assumptions. Prepare a reconciliation showing both calculations and attach the underlying returns, challans or ledgers. Explain each difference instead of uploading figures without context.
There is no visible order after filing The officer may not yet have issued one, or the order may be in another section of the same case. Re-open the proceeding, inspect orders and communications, and do not treat the absence of an order as acceptance or closure.
You received a later communication The first reply may have been followed by a hearing request, clarification or order. Read the new document in full and follow its separate deadline and submission instruction.

Keep a defensible record of the case

Create one folder for each notice. Keep the original notice, your draft, the final submitted reply, attachment index, uploaded files, acknowledgement, screenshots or PDFs of the case history, later communications and orders. Use filenames that include the notice reference and date, and maintain a simple chronology of every portal action.

Store the folder securely because GST records can contain bank, customer and employee information. Share access with an adviser through an approved secure method, not by sending passwords, one-time passwords or signing keys. If another person prepares the response, review the final text and attachment list before the authorised signatory verifies it.

When professional help is sensible

A GST practitioner or indirect-tax adviser may be appropriate when the notice involves a disputed demand calculation, classification or exemption, input-tax-credit eligibility, several tax periods, related-party transactions, a proposed penalty or a personal hearing. Give the adviser the complete notice and case history, not only the amount in dispute. Professional assistance does not replace checking the portal confirmation yourself; the registered taxpayer remains responsible for knowing what was filed and when.

A practical final checklist

  • Notice form, reference number, issue date, financial year and tax period are recorded.
  • The notice-specific deadline and reply route are identified.
  • DRC-06 is being used only because the demand show-cause proceeding calls for it.
  • Every allegation has a numbered answer and a supporting record.
  • Attachments are readable, correctly labelled and accepted by the live portal.
  • The personal-hearing choice is deliberate and explained where useful.
  • GSTIN, legal name, notice identifiers and figures match throughout.
  • An authorised signatory completes the verification.
  • The portal displays a successful submission, not merely an upload or draft.
  • The acknowledgement or reference identifier, filed reply and attachment list are saved.
  • The same proceeding is revisited for replies, status, communications and orders.
  • Any later direction is handled under its own deadline.
