If you are trying to enter a National Park Service (NPS) application that uses IRMA Partner Access, first identify whether its sign-in is handled by Login.gov or an IRMA Partner Account. The two systems use different recovery processes. Login.gov sends an email link so you can create a new password. An IRMA Partner Account password reset requires your username, a CAPTCHA, and the answer to your security question, then sends a temporary password by email. If you forgot the IRMA account’s username (the User ID), use the separate username-recovery form with the account email and CAPTCHA.
Start with the exact NPS application
NPS applications do not all present an identical sign-in screen. Open the particular application you need, select its Log On or Log In link, and inspect the available choices before attempting recovery. An application may offer a Login.gov button, an IRMA Partner Account username-and-password form, or both. Recovering a password in one system will not change credentials in the other.

The Aquarius WebPortal is one example of an application that displays a Forgot your sign in details? help link on its sign-in page. If the labels in your application differ, follow that application’s own recovery link rather than assuming the Aquarius wording or layout is present everywhere.

“User ID” and “username” refer to the identifier used by the IRMA Partner Account form. The forgotten-username procedure below applies to that account type; it is not a replacement for Login.gov’s email-based sign-in.

Reset an IRMA Partner Account password
Use these steps when the application’s Username / Password Sign In area is labeled for a Partner Account.
- Open the application and choose Log On. Start at the NPS application you need, not at a different NPS service. Select its Log On link to reach the sign-in choices.
- Open the Partner Account recovery link. In the Partner Account sign-in section, select the link for a forgotten password. The exact wording can vary, but it is the password-recovery option beneath or beside the username and password fields.
- Enter the account username and CAPTCHA. Type the username associated with the IRMA Partner Account and reproduce the CAPTCHA characters shown on the form. Submit the request. The username is required for this route; an email address by itself belongs on the forgotten-username form instead.
- Answer the security question. The recovery page presents the security question saved for that account. Enter the answer and submit it. This check is tied to the Partner Account, so an answer from another NPS account or from a Login.gov profile will not satisfy it.
- Open the recovery email. Check the email account associated with the Partner Account for the password-recovery message. Follow the link in that message as directed. The message is sent to the address recorded on the account, not necessarily to an address you currently use for another NPS service.
- Sign in with the temporary password. Return to the same username-and-password sign-in page. Enter your Partner Account username and the temporary password supplied in the email.
- Replace the temporary password. When prompted, create a permanent password that has not been recently used on that account and satisfies all five criteria displayed beside the new-password field. Enter the new value as requested and submit the update. The criteria shown on the page are the controlling requirements, so follow them even if an older instruction or screenshot shows a different example.
What the temporary-password step means
The email does not give you a permanent replacement password. It gives you a temporary credential for the next sign-in. You must complete the change-password screen before treating the recovery as finished. If you close the process after the temporary sign-in, the account may still require that temporary value and the new password will not yet be active.
Do not copy credentials from old screenshots
Older instructional material may show sample usernames or passwords inside screenshots. Those values are illustrations, not credentials for your account. Enter only the username and temporary password delivered for your own recovery request.

Reset a Login.gov password
Choose this path only when the NPS application sends you to Login.gov or displays a Login.gov sign-in option.
- Open the NPS application’s login page. Select its Log On or Log In link and choose the Login.gov sign-in route.
- Select “Forgot your password?” Use that link on the Login.gov sign-in page rather than the Partner Account password link.
- Enter the Login.gov email address. Type the email address used for the Login.gov account and continue.
- Use the Password Recovery email. Open the message from Login.gov and follow its password-reset link. If you do not see it, check the folders and filters used by your mail service before starting a second request.
- Create and confirm the new password. Enter the replacement password twice as requested. After the update succeeds, return to the application and log in with the Login.gov account.
This process changes the Login.gov credential. It does not reset an IRMA Partner Account password, answer an IRMA security question, or reveal an IRMA username.
Retrieve a forgotten IRMA Partner Account username (User ID)
If you remember the account email but not the username, use the dedicated forgotten-username form instead of the password-reset form.

- Return to the IRMA application. Open the application, select Log On, and continue to the Partner Access Username / Password Sign In page.
- Select the forgotten-username link. Choose the link beneath the sign-in fields. It may be labeled as a forgotten username option or Recover Username.
- Submit the account email and CAPTCHA. Enter the email address associated with the IRMA Partner Account, reproduce the CAPTCHA characters, and submit the form.
The form asks for the email associated with the Partner Account, not the username you are trying to discover. Once you have the recovered username, return to the Partner Account sign-in page. If you also need a password reset, start the Partner Account password procedure using that username.
How to choose the right recovery link
If you see a Login.gov button
Select Login.gov and use its Forgot your password? option. Do not enter the Login.gov email in an IRMA Partner Account username field unless the application explicitly identifies that field as an email address.
If you see Username / Password Sign In under Partner Access
Use the IRMA Partner Account links. The password link requires the username, CAPTCHA, and security-question answer. The username link requires the associated email address and CAPTCHA.

If the page says “Forgot your sign in details?”
Follow that application-specific help route. Aquarius WebPortal uses this wording, and other NPS applications may use different labels or send you to different instructions. Confirm which underlying account type the page identifies before submitting information.

You started the wrong workflow
A common mistake is to use Login.gov recovery when the application expects an IRMA Partner Account, or to use the Partner Account form when the application expects Login.gov. Go back to the application’s first sign-in screen and identify the route from its labels. A successful password change in the wrong system will not make the intended application accept the credential.

The CAPTCHA is rejected
Re-enter the characters exactly as displayed, taking care with similar-looking letters and numbers. If the form provides a way to refresh the CAPTCHA, use the newly displayed challenge and submit it again. Do not substitute the security-question answer or email address for the CAPTCHA field.

You do not know the Partner Account username
Stop using the password-reset form, which requires a username. Open Recover Username or the equivalent forgotten-username link from the Partner Access sign-in page, then submit the account email and CAPTCHA. After the username is returned, begin password recovery if necessary.
You do not remember the security-question answer
The documented Partner Account password process requires the answer associated with that account. Recheck the account information you used when the question was established, but do not guess repeatedly if the application rejects the response. If you cannot satisfy the verification step, use the help or support route presented by that specific NPS application; the recovery documents do not provide a universal bypass.
The recovery email has not appeared
Confirm that you are checking the email address associated with the relevant account and inspect spam, junk, quarantine, and filtering folders. Also verify that you requested recovery from the correct application and account type. If the message still does not arrive, use the application’s own help route rather than sending credentials through an unrelated contact form.
The temporary password is rejected
Return to the same Partner Account sign-in page and enter the username exactly as recovered, along with the temporary value from the latest recovery email. Avoid copying extra spaces. If the latest message does not work, begin a fresh recovery request and follow the newest message; if the problem continues, contact the application-specific support channel shown on its sign-in or help page.
The page looks different from an instruction
Interface labels and layouts can change. The official NPS materials describe the recovery logic, but they do not guarantee that every application has the same appearance. Match the function—Login.gov recovery, Partner Account password recovery, or username recovery—rather than relying on the position of a button in an old screenshot.
Protect the account during recovery
- Use only the recovery email sent for your own request. Do not forward a temporary password or recovery link.
- Choose a new Partner Account password that is not recently used on that account and meets every one of the five criteria displayed on the change-password screen.
- Keep Login.gov and IRMA Partner Account credentials separate; changing one does not change the other.
- Do not publish or reuse example credentials shown in instructional screenshots.
- After a successful change, close old recovery messages and store the new credential in the password-management method approved by your organization.
Official help available for IRMA users
NPS provides a document titled Recovering a Forgotten Password covering both Login.gov and Partner Account recovery, plus a separate document titled Recovering a Forgotten Partner Account Username. NPS also describes a video as a “Step-by-step instruction guide for NPS IRMA users who need help recovering a forgotten password”; its listed duration is 4 minutes, 9 seconds. These materials explain the documented procedures, while the application’s current sign-in page controls the labels and links you actually see.
