How to Research an EV Company’s Cash Burn and Runway

To estimate whether an electric-vehicle company can keep operating, do three things: define usable liquidity, calculate cash consumption from the statement of cash flows, and divide that liquidity by a clearly stated monthly burn under more than one scenario. The result is a screening estimate, not a promise that the company will remain solvent.

Cash on the balance sheet, short-term investments, restricted cash and undrawn credit facilities are different resources. Net loss is not cash burn. A single quarter can be distorted by inventory, customer deposits, supplier payments, factory spending or financing transactions. A defensible answer therefore states the filing date, period, currency, accounting line items, assumptions and obligations behind every number.

What cash-burn and runway analysis actually measures

Cash burn is the rate at which a company’s cash resources decline over a specified period. The most useful starting point is net cash used in operating activities, because it captures cash generated or consumed by the business itself. A broader view subtracts capital expenditures to produce a simple free-cash-flow measure.

Runway is the estimated time before a defined pool of available liquidity is exhausted at a defined burn rate. The basic screening formula is:

Estimated runway in months = usable liquidity ÷ average monthly cash burn

This calculation assumes the historical burn continues, all included liquidity can actually be drawn, no major debt maturity arrives first, and the company does not change its operating or investment plan. Those assumptions are often unrealistic for an EV manufacturer, where production ramps, factory construction and financing transactions can make cash flows lumpy. Present runway as a scenario estimate, not as a date on which cash must reach zero.

Start with the latest comparable filings

Use the newest available Form 10-K, Form 10-Q, earnings release, investor presentation and material Form 8-K filings. The SEC financial statements are the authority for reported cash-flow and balance-sheet values; investor-relations materials can help locate exhibits and management commentary.

  1. Record the filing date and period end. Note whether the statements are audited annual statements or interim reviewed statements.
  2. Record the reporting currency and units. A figure shown in millions must not be compared with a figure shown in thousands without conversion.
  3. Use matching periods for comparisons. Compare quarter with quarter, year-to-date with year-to-date, annual with annual, or trailing twelve months with trailing twelve months.
  4. Save the relevant statements. You need the balance sheet, statement of cash flows, liquidity note, debt maturities, credit-facility terms and management’s liquidity discussion.
  5. Check for a newer filing. The examples below are dated through October 11, 2026; a later filing can change every balance and runway conclusion.

Define usable liquidity before calculating anything

Do not begin with a headline number labelled simply “cash.” Build a liquidity bridge that identifies what is immediately spendable, what is liquid but invested, what is restricted and what is merely financing capacity.

Liquidity item How to treat it Questions to answer
Cash and cash equivalents Usually the core immediately available pool Is it unrestricted, and does the balance-sheet date match the burn period?
Short-term investments Add only when liquid and available for general corporate use What instruments, maturities, marketability limits or pledges apply?
Restricted cash Show separately; do not present it as spendable operating cash What contract, regulator, lender or other condition restricts use?
Undrawn credit facilities List separately from cash and include only to the extent the company can draw them Are there covenants, collateral, borrowing-base tests, expiration dates or lender discretion?
Expected financing, asset sales or government support Treat as contingent until committed and available Is there a signed agreement, a closing condition or a realistic timing risk?

Also list current debt, near-term maturities, lease payments and other material contractual cash requirements. A facility can increase potential liquidity without being unrestricted cash. A company that reports a large combined liquidity figure may still face a near-term repayment, covenant or collateral constraint.

Calculate historical cash use from the cash-flow statement

Operating cash burn

Take net cash provided by (used in) operating activities for the selected interval. If the number is negative, its absolute value is operating cash burn for that interval. Divide by the number of months for a backward-looking monthly average.

For example, a six-month operating cash outflow is not a quarterly burn rate. Divide it by six, then compare that result with the latest quarter and the trailing twelve months. Keep signs consistent in your worksheet so that a negative cash-flow line is not accidentally treated as a positive source of cash.

A simple free-cash-flow convention

A commonly used measure is:

Free cash flow = net cash from operating activities − purchases of property and equipment

State the components every time. Companies and data vendors use different definitions, and the investing section also contains items besides capital expenditure. Do not label total investing cash outflow as capex unless the filing’s detail supports that conclusion.

Why net loss is not cash burn

Net income or net loss includes noncash depreciation, stock compensation, impairment, deferred taxes and other accounting adjustments. It also differs from cash flow because working-capital movements can release or consume cash. Use net loss as a profitability and risk indicator, not as a substitute for operating cash burn.

Reconcile what moved the cash balance

Start with the cash-flow statement’s reconciliation of beginning and ending cash, cash equivalents and restricted cash. Then investigate the largest changes rather than assigning a cause from the ending balance alone.

  • Working capital: inventory builds, customer deposits, receivables and supplier payables can shift cash sharply between quarters.
  • Capital spending: factories, tooling, equipment and charging or service infrastructure can create large, uneven outflows.
  • Financing: debt issuance, equity sales, repayments and facility draws can mask an operating cash deficit.
  • Investing activity: short-term investment purchases or maturities, acquisitions and asset sales may be material.
  • Noncash adjustments: reconcile them so accounting expense is not mistaken for a cash payment.

EV production ramps are especially prone to lumpy inventory and capital-spending flows. Attribute a movement to a specific cause only when the filing does so; otherwise describe the line item without guessing at the operational explanation.

Use three time windows, not one quarter

Calculate at least the latest quarter, the year-to-date period and the trailing twelve months. Each answers a different question:

Window What it reveals Main limitation
Latest quarter Current direction and recent changes Seasonality, delivery timing and one-off payments can dominate.
Year to date Accumulated performance in the current fiscal year Still may not represent a full production or investment cycle.
Trailing twelve months A smoother view across four quarters Can lag a recent acceleration in spending or improvement in cash generation.

Compare the resulting monthly averages. If the latest quarter is materially worse than the trailing twelve months, investigate whether the change reflects a continuing ramp, a one-time payment or a timing reversal before choosing a runway input.

Build a transparent runway calculation

Step 1: Choose the liquidity pool

Write the components explicitly, such as cash and cash equivalents plus qualifying short-term investments. Show restricted cash and undrawn facilities in separate rows. If management uses a broader liquidity definition, reproduce it as management’s measure and then provide your narrower unrestricted calculation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 2: Choose the burn period

Use a monthly average derived from the latest quarter, year to date and trailing twelve months. If one period contains a documented unusual transaction, show the unadjusted result and explain the item instead of silently removing it.

Step 3: Check obligations that shorten runway

Subtract or separately model debt maturities, mandatory lease payments, interest, purchase commitments and other material cash requirements. A ratio that ignores a large repayment can overstate the time available for operations.

Step 4: Present scenarios

A useful presentation has a base case and a downside case. State assumptions for revenue and gross margin, working capital, operating expenses, capital expenditure, interest, debt repayments and financing. Use a range only when the assumptions have support in company guidance, contracts or historical data. If they do not, explain why the runway is indeterminate rather than assigning a false precision such as “17.4 months.”

How to evaluate management’s liquidity statement

Management may say current sources of funds will cover a stated period. Treat that as management’s view based on forecasts and assumptions, not an independent assurance. Identify exactly what the statement includes: operations, product development, factory buildout, tooling, service infrastructure and other investments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Then test the funding sources behind the statement:

  • Forecast operating cash generation may not arrive if deliveries, pricing or gross margin disappoint.
  • Undrawn credit may require collateral, covenants, borrowing-base availability or lender approval.
  • Debt or equity raises depend on market access, pricing and closing conditions.
  • Strategic partners, government support and asset monetization may be contingent or delayed.
  • Planned investment cuts can preserve cash but may compromise the product or production plan.

Record the date and scope of every outlook statement. A twelve-month liquidity assertion does not eliminate obligations that mature beyond twelve months, nor does it guarantee that a company can raise new capital on acceptable terms.

Dated examples from major EV filings

Tesla

Tesla’s 2025 Form 10-K reported $16.51 billion of cash and cash equivalents at December 31, 2025. It reported $27.55 billion of cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments, plus $6.43 billion of unused committed credit. The same filing reported $8.18 billion of aggregate principal debt, including $1.58 billion classified as current. These are different categories: the credit figure is not cash, and debt is an obligation rather than a liquidity source.

Tesla management wrote in that filing: Accordingly, we believe that our current sources of funds will provide us with adequate liquidity during the 12-month period following December 31, 2025, as well as in the long-term. That is a dated management assessment, not an independent guarantee.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In its second-quarter 2026 Form 10-Q, Tesla reported $15.22 billion of cash and cash equivalents and $28.31 billion of cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments at June 30, 2026. For the six months ended June 30, 2026, it reported $8.634 billion of net cash provided by operating activities and $10.951 billion of net cash used in investing activities. Tesla expected 2026 capital expenditures to exceed $25 billion. Because investing cash flow includes more than capital expenditure, do not automatically use the entire $10.951 billion as capex in a free-cash-flow calculation; inspect the investing detail.

Lucid

Lucid’s 2025 Form 10-K reported $2.14 billion of cash, cash equivalents and investments at December 31, 2025. It also reported unused available credit of $1.98 billion, $396.8 million and $38.3 million under specified facilities. Those facilities should be analysed individually for conditions and availability rather than added to cash without qualification.

Lucid reported net losses of $2.7 billion in 2025, $2.7 billion in 2024 and $2.8 billion in 2023. Those losses demonstrate substantial historical losses but do not quantify cash burn. Lucid’s filing says it has incurred operating losses and negative operating cash flows since inception and that future operations require considerable capital beyond expected cash inflows from current vehicle sales. It also states: As such, the future operating plan involves considerable risk if secure funding sources are not identified and confirmed.

Lucid’s first-quarter 2026 Form 10-Q reported $714.0 million of cash, cash equivalents and investments at March 31, 2026, with specified unused available amounts of $1.98 billion, $468.4 million and $2.3 million across three facilities. It reported net losses of $1,028.3 million for the first quarter of 2026 and $366.2 million for the first quarter of 2025. Lucid management said current liquidity sources and projected operating cash flows would provide adequate liquidity for at least the next 12 months; evaluate that statement against the facilities’ conditions, expected spending and detailed cash-flow requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rivian

Rivian’s 2025 Form 10-K reported net losses of $5,432 million for 2023, $4,746 million for 2024 and $3,626 million for 2025. The filing says Rivian expects significant expenses and continuing losses for the foreseeable future. It identifies profitability dependencies including successful vehicle, software and service development, production, adoption, demand, pricing, sourcing and manufacturing execution.

Those loss figures are useful risk context but do not establish Rivian’s cash burn or a directly comparable current runway. To compare Rivian with another issuer, extract the same period-end cash categories, operating cash flow, capital expenditure, restricted cash, facility availability and debt schedule from the latest filing.

Why these examples should not be ranked as a simple leaderboard

The Tesla interim figures end June 30, 2026, while Lucid’s latest cited filing ends March 31, 2026. Rivian’s cited evidence focuses on losses and risk disclosures rather than a synchronized cash snapshot. The companies also differ in spending plans, obligations, facility terms, production stages and accounting presentation. A larger cash balance alone does not prove a longer runway.

For any side-by-side table, align all seven axes:

  1. Period end and whether the measure is quarterly, year to date, annual or trailing twelve months.
  2. Liquidity definition, including restricted cash and facility availability.
  3. Operating cash flow versus capital expenditure and the free-cash-flow convention.
  4. Debt, leases and maturity schedule.
  5. Working capital and production-ramp effects.
  6. Committed versus contingent funding.
  7. Management outlook assumptions and the ability to delay or cut investment.

Common analytical mistakes and how to correct them

  • Calling all liquidity “cash.” Correct it by separating cash, investments, restricted amounts and facilities.
  • Using net loss as burn. Replace it with operating cash flow and explain noncash and working-capital effects.
  • Annualizing one unusual quarter. Compare quarter, year-to-date and trailing twelve months, then investigate the drivers.
  • Calling total investing outflow capex. Read the investing detail and use purchases of property and equipment for the stated convention.
  • Counting an undrawn facility as spendable money. Review covenants, collateral, borrowing-base tests, maturity and lender discretion.
  • Ignoring debt and leases. Put mandatory payments into the runway scenario or show how they reduce the liquidity pool.
  • Presenting management guidance as certainty. Attribute it, date it and test the assumptions.
  • Comparing mismatched periods. Rebuild the comparison with identical period ends and definitions.
  • Inventing operational explanations. Attribute causes only where the filing does; otherwise describe the cash-flow line without speculation.

A reusable worksheet

For each issuer, keep a worksheet with these fields:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Field Entry
Filing and period end Form 10-K or 10-Q name, filing date and balance-sheet date
Cash and cash equivalents Reported amount and units
Qualifying short-term investments Reported amount, liquidity and restrictions
Restricted cash Reported amount and reason for restriction
Unused facilities Each facility, conditions, maturity and collateral
Operating cash flow Quarter, year-to-date and trailing twelve months
Purchases of property and equipment Period amount used in the stated free-cash-flow convention
Debt, leases and commitments Current portion, maturities, interest and mandatory payments
Runway assumptions Liquidity pool, monthly burn, capex, working capital, financing and downside case
Management outlook Exact scope, date and assumptions behind any liquidity statement

Keep a dated copy of the worksheet. When a new filing arrives, update the same fields rather than mixing old cash balances with new burn periods. That discipline makes it possible to tell whether runway changed because cash increased, burn improved, obligations moved or the definition changed.

The Bottom Line

An EV company’s runway cannot be inferred from its cash balance or net loss alone. Define unrestricted liquidity, calculate operating cash burn and a clearly labelled free-cash-flow measure, reconcile unusual cash movements, include debt and facility conditions, and test base and downside scenarios using matching filing periods. The result is a transparent estimate whose uncertainty is visible rather than a misleading single number.
