The most reliable way to research a semiconductor stock is to begin with the issuer’s latest annual filing, then update your understanding with its newest quarterly and current reports. Identify exactly what the company sells, where it sits in the semiconductor value chain, which end markets and customers drive revenue, and how those drivers appear in several periods of financial statements. Only after that should you assess industry conditions, risks, valuation and your own investment thesis. The process is educational, not a recommendation to buy or sell any security.
1. Confirm the company and its reporting status
Start by writing down the company’s exact legal name, ticker, exchange, reporting jurisdiction and fiscal year-end. Similar names, multiple share classes and foreign listings can lead you to the wrong filing or currency. Note whether the issuer files with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as a domestic issuer, a foreign private issuer or another registrant category. The forms and reporting calendar can differ.

Find the authoritative filing set
- Search the issuer’s filings in SEC EDGAR if it is a U.S. reporting company.
- Record the filing date and the period covered; a report filed recently may still describe an earlier fiscal year.
- For a non-U.S. company, identify the annual-report form used in its home market and any SEC form applicable to its listing. The SEC’s investor guide explains how public-company reports are organized and where to find them: SEC guide to reading company filings.
- Use the SEC’s public-company research resources to locate later filings and material updates: SEC company research resources.
Save the latest annual report, the latest quarterly report and every current report filed since the annual report. Check that you are comparing the same accounting currency and fiscal periods; semiconductor companies often have different year-ends, making calendar-year comparisons imperfect.
2. Read the annual report in the order that answers investor questions
An annual report gives the broadest view of the business. The SEC describes the Form 10-K as a detailed account of a company’s business, risks and operating and financial results. Its management’s discussion and analysis (MD&A) presents management’s perspective on results, liquidity, capital resources and material trends or uncertainties. Read the sections together rather than relying on the glossy shareholder letter.

Business description
Identify the products, technologies, manufacturing arrangements and customers that actually generate revenue. Look for segment definitions, product categories, geographic information and descriptions of research and development. A company that calls itself an artificial-intelligence supplier may derive revenue from several different chips, software licenses or manufacturing services; the filing should tell you which are material.
Competition and regulation
Note named competitors, substitute technologies, qualification requirements and the time needed for customers to switch suppliers. Semiconductor products can remain in a design for years, but a failed product transition can still remove a large revenue stream. Record regulations affecting exports, national-security reviews, environmental permits, subsidies or customer certifications.
MD&A and financial statements
Read the MD&A before drawing conclusions from a single margin or growth rate. Management should explain changes in revenue, gross margin, operating expenses, liquidity and capital resources. Then inspect the income statement, balance sheet, cash-flow statement, statement of stockholders’ equity and the notes. The notes often contain the detail needed to interpret segment results, revenue recognition, inventory, debt, leases, share compensation, taxes and commitments.
Risk factors
Risk-factor sections are not a ranking of likely events, but they show the exposures management must disclose. Mark each risk that could change your earnings assumptions: customer concentration, product transitions, manufacturing yields, supplier or foundry dependence, capacity constraints, inventory corrections, capital needs, export controls, trade restrictions and geographic concentration. Later, verify whether those risks appear in current results rather than treating boilerplate as proof that a problem is occurring.
3. Update the picture with quarterly and current reports
The annual report can become stale quickly in a cyclical industry. Read the latest Form 10-Q, or the applicable interim report for a foreign issuer, to update revenue, margins, inventory, cash flow, debt and guidance. Compare the quarter with both the immediately preceding quarter and the same quarter a year earlier; seasonality can make a sequential comparison misleading.

Use current reports for material events
Review Form 8-K filings and equivalent current reports filed after the annual report. The SEC calls Form 8-K a current report for specified events shareholders should know about. These filings can disclose a major customer agreement, acquisition, financing, executive change, impairment, restructuring, cybersecurity incident or other event before it appears in the next quarterly report.
Build a dated information log
- For each number, record the period, currency, accounting basis and whether it is reported, estimated or guided.
- Separate management guidance from your own forecast. Guidance can be withdrawn or revised.
- Flag restatements, discontinued operations or segment changes that make historical comparisons less reliable.
- Read subsequent-event notes and updates to risk factors for developments after the balance-sheet date.
4. Map the company’s place in the semiconductor value chain
Semiconductor businesses do not share one economic model. Before comparing stocks, classify the company by the work it performs and the assets it must fund.

| Value-chain role | What to examine | Typical exposure to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Chip designer using outside manufacturing | Architecture, intellectual property, design wins, foundry agreements and packaging arrangements | Dependence on external capacity, wafer pricing, design cycles and customer concentration |
| Integrated manufacturer | Owned fabrication plants, process technology, utilization and capital spending | Yield, utilization, depreciation, large capital requirements and technology transitions |
| Foundry | Manufacturing wafers for customers, process nodes, capacity and customer mix | Utilization, yield, geographic concentration and the timing of customer ramps |
| Equipment or materials supplier | Tools or materials sold to manufacturers, service revenue and installed base | Fab-capital-spending cycles, order cancellations, export controls and service intensity |
The labels are a starting point, not a substitute for the filing. A company can combine several roles, outsource some stages and operate different models in different segments.
Use end-market mix to explain demand
Separate revenue tied to data centers and high-performance computing, smartphones, automotive, industrial systems, the Internet of Things and digital consumer electronics when the issuer discloses it. End markets have different replacement cycles, inventory behavior and qualification requirements. A strong data-center quarter does not prove that handset or automotive demand is equally strong.
As an example of why business-model detail matters, TSMC’s 2025 annual-report site describes a pure-foundry model and discusses demand from high-performance computing, smartphones, IoT, automotive and digital consumer electronics. That description applies to that issuer’s model, not to every semiconductor company: TSMC 2025 annual report.

5. Examine customers, products and competitive advantage
Customer concentration and visibility
Check whether one customer, distributor or geography represents a material share of sales. Concentration can provide volume visibility when the relationship is durable, but it also creates bargaining power and sudden-revenue risk if a program is delayed or a customer insources. Look for disclosure about backlog, purchase commitments, design wins and cancellation rights; a design win is not the same as booked revenue.
Product life cycle and mix
Determine which products are growing, mature, declining or being replaced. Ask whether growth comes from unit volume, higher prices, richer product mix, acquisitions or currency. Gross margin can rise because of mix even while unit demand weakens, so connect margin changes to product and end-market data.
Durable advantages
Test management’s claims about process leadership, intellectual property, software ecosystems, switching costs, scale, packaging, distribution or customer qualification. Evidence can include sustained margins, repeat orders, low customer churn, high research-and-development productivity or a long qualification cycle. Treat marketing language as a hypothesis until the financial statements and customer disclosures support it.
6. Track operating performance across several periods
Build a spreadsheet covering at least three to five annual periods when available, plus the latest quarters. The goal is to understand how the business behaves through expansion, shortage, correction and recovery—not to reward one unusually strong quarter.
Core measures
- Revenue: chart total revenue and disclosed segments, products and geographies. Explain changes by volume, price, mix, acquisitions, currency and one-off events.
- Gross margin: connect movement to utilization, yield, product mix, pricing, manufacturing cost and inventory charges.
- Operating income: separate operating leverage from research-and-development or selling-cost changes.
- Cash from operations: compare cash generation with net income and investigate working-capital swings.
- Capital expenditures: relate spending to new fabs, equipment, capacity additions and maintenance. A high-growth plan may consume cash for years before producing revenue.
- Inventory: examine dollars, days and write-downs, then compare them with sales and customer demand. Inventory can rise because a company is preparing for growth or because products are becoming obsolete.
- Balance-sheet capacity: review cash, debt maturities, leases, purchase commitments and access to financing before assuming the company can fund its plan.
Ask what changed, not just whether it changed
For every major movement, write a one-sentence explanation from the filing and a second sentence stating what evidence would confirm or disprove it. For example, a margin decline attributed to a factory ramp should be checked against utilization, start-up costs and subsequent-quarter improvement. This discipline prevents a convenient narrative from replacing operating evidence.

7. Put company results in industry context without turning market data into a forecast
Industry statistics help you understand the cycle, but they do not establish a stock’s fair value. World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) reported worldwide semiconductor sales of USD 795.6 billion in 2025, up 26.2% year over year. It reported USD 238.9 billion in fourth-quarter 2025 sales, up 38.4% from the fourth quarter of 2024. These are realized market-wide sales, not a forecast for any individual issuer. The figures appear in WSTS’s release dated March 6, 2026: WSTS Q4 2025 release.
Compare the company’s exposure with the market measure
Ask which products and regions drove the industry’s reported growth and whether the company sells into those pockets. A company focused on a weak end market can underperform while the overall market grows. Conversely, a small supplier with a favorable product cycle can grow faster than the market but carry greater execution risk.
Keep forecasts separate from reported results
The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) reported that WSTS projects worldwide semiconductor sales of USD 1.5 trillion in 2026. That is a forecast, not actual sales, and it does not identify which companies will capture growth or what investors have already priced into shares: SIA 2026 State of the Industry report. In your notes, label every industry number as historical, current or forecast and record the publication date.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Investigate supply-chain, geopolitical and execution risks
Read the selected issuer’s own risk factors and MD&A; do not import another company’s exposures as if they were universal. A 2025 SEC-filed semiconductor annual report, for example, discusses reliance on third parties for manufacturing, assembly, packaging and testing, possible capacity and yield challenges, export restrictions and potential Taiwan-related supply disruption. It is an illustration of risks that can appear in this sector, not evidence that every issuer has the same exposure: SEC-filed 2025 semiconductor annual report example.

- Identify single-source wafers, substrates, chemicals, packaging or testing providers.
- Check whether contracts guarantee capacity, pricing or only provide intentions.
- Look for yield, qualification and ramp disclosures when a new process or facility is introduced.
- Compare planned capacity with expected demand; excess capacity can pressure prices and margins.
Geography and policy checks
- Map factories, suppliers, customers and cash held by jurisdiction.
- Review export-control rules, tariffs, sanctions and licensing requirements that could limit sales or equipment access.
- Assess exposure to earthquakes, power and water shortages, shipping disruption and regional conflict.
- Check whether government incentives carry construction, employment or production conditions.
Financial and governance checks
- Review debt covenants, refinancing dates, pension obligations, leases and purchase commitments.
- Read related-party transactions, stock-based compensation and share-count changes.
- Check auditor comments, internal-control weaknesses, restatements and litigation disclosures.
- Distinguish a disclosed possibility from an event that has already affected results.
9. Evaluate valuation only after understanding the business
No single multiple works for every semiconductor company. Choose measures that match the company’s business model and cycle, then state the assumptions behind them.

Build an explicit operating case
- Estimate revenue by segment or end market rather than applying one growth rate to the whole company.
- Set assumptions for unit volume, pricing, product mix, utilization and gross margin.
- Model research and development, selling costs, taxes, capital expenditures and working capital.
- Translate operating assumptions into earnings and cash flow, then compare the resulting share value with the current market price you observe.
- Run downside cases for a demand correction, delayed product launch, lower yield, export restriction, customer loss or higher financing cost.
Use multiples carefully
Price-to-earnings, enterprise-value-to-operating-income, price-to-sales and free-cash-flow measures can all mislead when earnings are at a cyclical peak or trough. Compare a multiple with the company’s own history, credible peers with similar value-chain roles and the durability of its cash generation. A high-growth industry forecast is not proof that a particular stock is cheap, and the cited SEC and industry materials do not provide a universal fair-value method or a fair value for any named security.
Check balance-sheet needs
Two companies with identical earnings growth can deserve different valuations if one must fund a multibillion-dollar factory program while the other is asset-light. Include maintenance and expansion capital expenditures, working-capital requirements, debt service and potential dilution in your valuation case.
10. Compare semiconductor stocks with a consistent framework
When evaluating more than one company, score each on the same questions and weight them according to your time horizon. A long-term investor may emphasize process leadership and balance-sheet durability; a shorter-cycle thesis may emphasize inventory, bookings and near-term utilization.

| Value-chain position | Does the company design chips, manufacture them, operate a foundry, supply equipment or combine roles? What assets and partners are essential? |
| Product and end-market mix | Which products and markets supply revenue, and how exposed is each to replacement cycles or secular growth? |
| Customer concentration | How much revenue depends on one customer, distributor, platform or program? What evidence supports future demand? |
| Performance through cycles | How did revenue, margins, cash flow and inventory behave in strong, weak and transitional periods? |
| Manufacturing and suppliers | Who controls wafer, packaging, testing and critical-material capacity? What are the yield and ramp risks? |
| Geography and policy | Where are facilities and customers located, and how could export controls, tariffs or geopolitical events affect operations? |
| Valuation and assumptions | What growth, margin, capital-spending and downside assumptions are embedded in the price? |
Do not create a generic league table. A company can rank well on growth and poorly on balance-sheet risk, while another may have slower growth but more resilient cash flow. The right weighting follows the thesis you can defend.
11. Write the thesis and define what would disprove it
Finish your research with a one-page memo dated to the latest filing. Keep reported facts, management expectations and your estimates in separate columns.
Thesis template
- Demand driver: the specific product and end market expected to grow.
- Company advantage: the evidence that this issuer can capture that demand.
- Financial proof: the multi-period revenue, margin, cash-flow and balance-sheet trends that support the argument.
- Valuation: the assumptions required for the current price to offer an acceptable return.
- Key risks: the operational, policy, customer and financial events that could impair the case.
- Disconfirming signals: the exact metrics or disclosures that would make you reduce, revise or abandon the thesis.
Quarterly monitoring checklist
- Did reported revenue and guidance match the demand assumptions?
- Did gross margin move for the expected mix, utilization or yield reasons?
- Are inventory and receivables consistent with sales growth?
- Did capital spending, debt or share count change the cash-return outlook?
- Were new risks, customer losses, export restrictions or supply constraints disclosed?
- Has the share price moved enough that your valuation assumptions no longer hold?
Repeat the checklist after every annual and quarterly filing. A thesis that cannot specify what would disprove it is a narrative, not a research process.
