Ask the bank to register a formal complaint, investigate, and secure your account. A UPI payment that has already been initiated generally cannot be stopped, and filing a report does not guarantee repayment. Your prospects depend on what happened, how quickly you notified the bank, whether credentials were shared, and the bank’s investigation under applicable Reserve Bank of India (RBI) rules.
What to do first: a three-route response
Use these routes in parallel rather than waiting for one to finish:

| Route | Purpose | What to request or record |
|---|---|---|
| Bank linked to the debited account | Creates the formal fraud or unauthorised-transaction case and triggers the bank’s security and investigation process. | Complaint/reference number, account and UPI access protection, transaction investigation, dispute procedure and next-update date. |
| UPI app | Reports the individual transaction through the app’s grievance or “report issue” workflow and lets you monitor its status where supported. | Screenshot of the transaction and the app complaint number or status. |
| NPCI complaint facility | Routes a UPI grievance to the relevant member institution; NPCI says that member is responsible for resolution. | NPCI complaint reference and the member bank’s response. |
Do not rely on a message to the recipient, a social-media post, or a private “recovery agent” as a substitute for the bank report. Never pay someone who promises a guaranteed refund.

Step 1: contact your bank immediately
Use an official channel
Use the bank’s verified mobile app, official website, phone-banking number, or a branch contact obtained from the bank’s own channels. Tell the representative plainly that a UPI debit is unauthorised or fraud-related. Ask the bank to:
#1 Best Overall
- register a formal complaint and give you its reference number;
- investigate the transaction and start the bank’s dispute process;
- secure the account and UPI access against further unauthorised transactions; and
- tell you what documents it needs and when you should expect the next update.
RBI’s customer-protection direction says banks should provide round-the-clock reporting through multiple channels and take immediate steps to prevent further unauthorised transactions after receiving a report. Write down the date, time, channel and name or identifier of the person who accepted your complaint.
Describe exactly how the payment happened
Explain whether you did nothing and money was debited, or whether a scammer persuaded you to approve a payment. For example, a fraudster might have impersonated a bank employee, sent a fake collect request, or instructed you to enter a UPI PIN to “receive” money. Do not call every scam-induced payment technically “unauthorised” without explaining the facts. RBI’s liability framework distinguishes customer negligence, such as sharing payment credentials, from a third-party breach in which neither the bank nor the customer is at fault. The bank must classify the event under the applicable rules.
Step 2: report the transaction in the UPI app
Find the transaction grievance option
- Open the UPI app used for the payment.
- Open transaction history and select the disputed debit.
- Choose the app’s “Help”, “Report issue”, “Raise complaint” or equivalent option.
- Select the closest reason, such as fraudulent, unauthorised or recipient dispute, and describe what occurred without exaggeration.
- Save the complaint number and take screenshots showing the transaction, status and submitted description.
NPCI’s UPI FAQ says participating bank UPI apps can be used to raise a grievance or check its status. The app route documents the transaction, but it does not replace notifying the bank that holds the debited account.

Use NPCI’s routing facility when appropriate
NPCI’s complaint information says complaints about fraudulent, unidentified or unauthorised transactions should be raised with the customer’s bank for redressal. Its facility can forward a complaint to the relevant member institution and provide a way to check status. NPCI states that the member institution—not NPCI itself—is responsible for resolving the complaint. Include the bank complaint number when the form allows it.
Build an evidence file before details disappear
Keep the original files where possible; do not crop away transaction identifiers. Record:
- transaction date and time;
- amount debited and account or UPI ID shown;
- the UPI transaction reference number or RRN;
- payer and payee details displayed by the app;
- the name of the UPI app and bank account used;
- screenshots of the transaction, error or status screens;
- SMS, email, chat messages, links and call details connected with the incident; and
- every bank, app and NPCI complaint or ticket number, with submission dates.
NPCI’s complaint form asks for transaction particulars such as the date, transaction or RRN, bank and amount. Keep a chronological log of calls and replies. If a message or call recording is available lawfully on your device, preserve it in its original form and make a backup.

Can a UPI payment be stopped or reversed?
Usually, no. NPCI’s UPI FAQ states: “No, once the payment is initiated, it cannot be stopped.” That means a support agent cannot promise cancellation merely because you reported the transfer. Report immediately anyway: the bank may still investigate, contact the receiving institution through its banking channels, secure your account and apply any liability or redress rules that fit the facts.

If the money has moved through several accounts or has been withdrawn, recovery can be difficult. The absence of an automatic stop does not remove the value of a prompt report.
When RBI liability rules may help
RBI’s 14 December 2017 customer-protection notification cited here is addressed to co-operative banks. It is not a blanket promise that every UPI customer at every type of bank receives the same result. Ask your bank which current RBI direction and board-approved policy applies to your account, and request the basis for any liability decision in writing.
Third-party breach where neither the bank nor customer is at fault
Under the cited direction, a customer has zero liability when the bank receives notice within three working days of the bank’s transaction communication. Notice within four to seven working days carries liability capped at the transaction value or the amount in the applicable RBI table, whichever is lower. After seven working days, the bank’s board-approved policy applies. The count excludes the day the communication was received and follows the working-day schedule of the home branch.
| When the bank is notified | Position under the cited co-operative-bank direction |
|---|---|
| Within three working days of receiving the transaction communication | Zero liability in the specified third-party-breach category, where neither bank nor customer is at fault. |
| Four to seven working days | Liability capped at the transaction value or the applicable RBI table amount, whichever is lower. |
| After seven working days | The bank’s board-approved policy applies. |
These periods are not a universal UPI refund guarantee. The bank must first determine whether the facts fit the category and whether another current rule or amendment applies.

The notification says that when a customer’s negligence contributed—for example, sharing payment credentials—the customer bears the loss until the unauthorised transaction is reported. Losses after the report are borne by the bank under the stated framework. This is why your complaint should say exactly what you entered, approved, disclosed or did not do. The same facts can affect whether the event is treated as a third-party breach, customer negligence, or a payment the account holder authorised after being deceived.

The cited direction places the burden of proving customer liability on the bank. Ask for the bank’s written explanation if it says you are liable, including the evidence and rule relied upon.
Temporary credit and resolution timing
For qualifying zero- or limited-liability cases, the cited direction says the bank should make a shadow reversal within ten working days after customer notification. It also says the bank should resolve the complaint or establish liability within the period in its policy, capped at 90 days. A shadow reversal is a provisional credit while liability is determined; it is not proof that the investigation has ended or that the credit cannot later be adjusted under the applicable rules.
Unauthorised debit versus a payment you approved after deception
This distinction affects how the bank investigates:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Unauthorised debit: you did not initiate or approve the transaction, and your credentials or device may have been compromised.
- Deception-induced payment: you entered a PIN, approved a collect request or otherwise authorised the payment because a scammer misrepresented the transaction.
Both should be reported as fraud-related, with a full factual account. Do not omit that you approved a prompt, and do not accept a label that inaccurately says you knowingly paid the recipient. The bank’s classification, evidence and applicable liability rules determine the outcome.
Secure the account while the case is open
Ask the bank what immediate controls it can place on the affected account and UPI profile. Depending on the bank’s procedure, this may include disabling UPI, changing credentials, blocking a card or account channel, or reviewing linked devices. Change passwords and screen-lock credentials from a clean device if you suspect compromise; never share a UPI PIN, one-time password or full login credentials with a caller. Check recent transactions and report any additional debit separately so each event is recorded.
If you installed an app or gave remote access at a scammer’s direction, remove access only after preserving evidence and following the bank’s instructions. Do not delete messages, payment confirmations or the suspicious application’s details before documenting them.

Escalating a complaint about the bank’s service
Complete the bank’s internal process first
Keep proof that you submitted the complaint and wait for the bank’s stated response period. Send a written follow-up quoting the original reference number if the bank does not provide the promised update. Ask for the final decision, reasons, evidence considered and the rule or policy applied.
When an RBI Ombudsman route may be relevant
RBI’s complaints information provides a route for eligible complaints about regulated-entity service deficiencies. A search-indexed RBI FAQ for the Reserve Bank–Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026 states that a complaint may be filed when the regulated entity has not replied within 30 days (or a longer applicable period) or when the customer is dissatisfied with its response. Verify the current scheme text, eligibility and filing instructions on RBI’s official complaint portal before filing because the full 2026 primary text and instructions are subject to change.
This escalation addresses the bank’s service or complaint handling. It is not a guaranteed mechanism for retrieving money from the recipient or from a fraudster. Include your bank complaint number, dates, transaction identifiers, correspondence and the remedy you are seeking.
What not to assume
- A report equals a refund: reporting starts an investigation; it does not establish liability or guarantee recovery.
- The UPI app can unilaterally reverse the debit: NPCI’s member institution handles resolution, and an initiated payment cannot ordinarily be stopped.
- Every delay has the same consequence: RBI’s cited timelines and caps depend on the bank category, event classification, working-day calculation and applicable policy.
- An RBI escalation recovers funds directly: the Ombudsman route concerns eligible service complaints against regulated entities.
- A caller offering “help” is legitimate: use only bank, NPCI and RBI contact details verified independently.
A practical complaint script
You can adapt this wording for the bank and app:
“On [date] at [time], ₹[amount] was debited from my account through UPI. The transaction reference/RRN is [number]. I believe this is fraudulent or unauthorised because [brief factual description]. Please register a formal complaint, secure my account and UPI access against further unauthorised transactions, investigate the transfer, explain the applicable dispute and liability process, and provide my complaint number and next-update date. I have attached the transaction record and supporting messages.”
If you approved the payment after being deceived, replace “unauthorised” with a factual description such as: “I approved the payment after the caller falsely represented that it was required to receive or protect money.”
What a realistic recovery attempt looks like
- Immediately: notify the bank through an official channel and request account protection and a formal reference.
- That same day: report the transaction in the UPI app, capture the RRN and save all supporting records.
- During the investigation: answer the bank’s questions consistently, provide documents, and keep a dated log of updates.
- Within the applicable period: request the bank’s written liability decision and any temporary or final credit provided under its rules.
- If service remains deficient: complete the bank’s internal complaint process, then check current RBI Ombudsman eligibility and filing instructions.
Do not publish or forward another person’s account details while seeking help. Share sensitive information only through authenticated bank or regulator channels.

Frequently asked questions
Should I call the bank or the UPI app first?
Contact the bank linked to the debited account immediately, then use the UPI app’s grievance feature. The bank handles the account-level complaint and investigation; the app creates a transaction-level record.
Can I recover money if I reported it quickly?
Quick reporting improves the chance that the bank can take protective and investigative steps, but it does not guarantee recovery. The result depends on the transaction facts, evidence, receiving-bank action and applicable liability rules.
What if I shared my PIN or approved the payment?
Tell the bank exactly what you shared or approved. Under the cited RBI direction, customer negligence can affect liability until the transaction is reported, while later losses may be treated differently. The bank must assess the facts and prove any customer liability it asserts.
Is the three-day rule universal?
No. The three-working-day, four-to-seven-day and post-seven-day treatment described above comes from the cited 14 December 2017 direction for co-operative banks. Confirm the current rule for your bank and account.
What if the bank rejects my complaint?
Request the rejection and reasons in writing, retain all evidence, and check whether the bank has completed its internal complaint process. If the issue is an eligible service deficiency, verify the current RBI Ombudsman route and its timing requirements before escalating.
