In the ordinary case, your broker should issue Form 1099-DA rather than Form 1099-B. For 2025 sales, the statement often will not show cost basis, so you must reconstruct adjusted basis from your own trade, transfer and fee records. Answer the digital-asset question on your Form 1040 series return and report the transaction even if no statement arrives.
This guide covers U.S. federal reporting for individuals. State, local, foreign, entity and unusually complex transactions can follow different rules.

What a tokenized stock is for tax reporting
The Securities and Exchange Commission defines a tokenized security as “a financial instrument enumerated in the definition of ‘security’ under the federal securities laws that is formatted as or represented by a crypto asset, where the record of ownership is maintained in whole or in part on or through one or more crypto networks.” The token may therefore represent a traditional corporate share while ownership records are maintained partly on a blockchain or another crypto network.
The SEC describes two broad structures: issuer-sponsored tokenization and third-party tokenization. IRS final regulations use a related dual-classification concept: a tokenized security can give the holder an interest in another security, such as a corporate share, or can be an asset whose offer and sale was registered with the SEC (other than an asset treated as a security solely because it is an investment contract). The IRS says this information-reporting definition does not, by itself, settle every federal income-tax or securities-law issue. Confirm what your particular token legally represents before applying the reporting workflow below.
Which information return should you expect?
For a tokenized security treated as a dual-classification asset, the 2026 IRS instructions say the broker should generally file Form 1099-DA, not Form 1099-B. The statement can contain a CUSIP or other identifier, accrued market discount, wash-sale loss and average-basis information when those items apply.
#1 Best Overall
| Situation | Statement normally used | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Token represents a stock or other security and is a dual-classification asset | Form 1099-DA | Identifier, proceeds, covered/noncovered status, basis-reported indicator, wash-sale amount and any adjustments |
| Digital asset is treated as a security only because it clears or settles on a limited-access regulated network | Form 1099-B may continue to apply | Use the form your broker actually issued and follow the current instructions |
| Section 1256 contract | Separate reporting rules | Apply the section 1256 instructions rather than assuming ordinary stock treatment |
| Money-market-fund share covered by an exception | Separate reporting rules | Follow the current Form 1099-DA and Form 1099-B instructions |
Do not change a 1099-DA into a 1099-B merely because the asset moved through a wallet or because the statement lacks basis. Use the broker’s classification, then correct demonstrable errors with your records and the form instructions.
Important dates for 2025 and 2026 returns
| Date | Federal significance | Practical effect |
|---|---|---|
| January 1, 2025 | Form 1099-DA broker reporting applies to covered digital-asset transactions occurring on or after this date. | Sales in 2025 may generate a 1099-DA, but the form may not contain basis. |
| January 1, 2026 | Basis reporting begins for certain transactions under the IRS phase-in. | Later statements may contain basis for transactions within the applicable reporting scope. |
| February 17, 2026 | The IRS Tax Tip for 2026 says brokers must furnish 2025 Form 1099-DA information by this date. | Wait for the statement, download it, and compare it with your own ledger before filing. |
| 30 days before or after a loss sale | The wash-sale window for covered tokenized securities. | A purchase of the same tokenized security or the underlying stock/security in this window can defer the loss. |
Transition relief may protect a broker from penalties when it makes a good-faith effort to comply. It does not remove your obligation to report taxable sales, exchanges or other dispositions accurately.

Records to gather before entering a single trade
Download the broker statement and assemble a transaction-level file. The IRS says basis determination requires the asset type, acquisition date and time, units and fair market value in U.S. dollars. For tokenized stock, add the information needed to trace the token to the represented security.
- Every Form 1099-DA, and any Form 1099-B or other statement the broker supplied.
- Trade confirmations showing purchase and sale dates, times, units, prices and commissions or other fees.
- The token’s identifier, such as a CUSIP or another identifier shown by the broker.
- Wallet addresses, deposit and withdrawal records, and records of transfers into or out of a hosted wallet.
- Corporate-action notices, including splits, mergers, conversions, redemptions or other events that changed units or basis.
- Your lot-selection method and the specific lots delivered when you sold.
- U.S.-dollar fair-market-value records for acquisitions or disposals that were not priced directly in dollars.
A wallet transfer is not automatically a sale, but it can break the broker’s view of your holding history. Preserve the sending and receiving addresses, timestamps, units and transaction identifiers so you can demonstrate that ownership continued.
Step-by-step: from the token sale to your tax return
1. Inventory every taxable disposal
List each sale, exchange, redemption or other disposition during the tax year. A transfer between wallets you own is generally a recordkeeping event rather than a disposal, but a transfer to another person, a redemption by the issuer or an exchange for another asset may have different consequences. Do not rely only on the trades shown in a hosted account; reconcile on-chain and off-chain records.
2. Identify the statement and its reporting fields
For an ordinary tokenized security, start with Form 1099-DA. Check the proceeds, asset description, identifier, acquisition and sale dates, covered or noncovered designation, and whether basis was reported. Note any wash-sale loss, accrued market discount or average-basis information. If the broker issued Form 1099-B instead, read the explanation and compare it with the limited-access-network and other exceptions in the current instructions.

3. Rebuild adjusted basis
For each lot, begin with what you paid, add acquisition costs that belong in basis, and apply adjustments from corporate actions, prior disallowed losses or other applicable rules. Subtract amounts that must be removed under a specific tax rule. A missing basis field on a 2025 statement is not a zero basis. It means you must calculate the amount from your records.
When tokens moved into a hosted wallet, match the deposit to the original acquisition lot. If the broker cannot identify the lot, use the lot-selection method you actually applied and retain evidence of the instruction. Do not quietly substitute an average cost when your records show specific identification, or vice versa.
4. Compute gain or loss for each lot
For a capital asset, the general calculation is:
Gain or loss = amount realized − adjusted basis.
Amount realized is normally the proceeds less selling costs allocated to that disposition. Keep the calculation in U.S. dollars and preserve the fee allocation. The holding period runs from the acquisition date through the disposition date; classify the result as short-term or long-term under the applicable federal rules.
5. Enter the transactions on Form 8949
Use Form 8949 for the sales, exchanges and other dispositions of capital digital assets, including tokenized securities. Enter the description, dates acquired and sold, proceeds, basis, adjustments and resulting gain or loss. Use the covered/noncovered and basis-reported information on the statement to choose the appropriate reporting category, but correct the numbers when your documentation establishes that the statement is wrong or incomplete. Follow the current Form 8949 instructions for the adjustment code and explanation when a broker-reported amount must be changed.

Transfer the short-term and long-term totals from Form 8949 to the corresponding sections of Schedule D. Keep the lot-level worksheet with your return records; Schedule D is a summary and does not replace the supporting calculations.
7. Answer the Form 1040 digital-asset question
Answer the digital-asset question on the Form 1040 series return as directed by that year’s instructions. The IRS states that every taxpayer must report related income, gains or losses whether or not a Form 1099-DA is received. A missing statement is therefore not a reason to omit a taxable tokenized-stock sale.

How to reconstruct basis when Form 1099-DA is blank
Most 2025 statements will not include basis, according to the IRS’s 2026 taxpayer reminder. Treat the statement as a proceeds and classification report, not as a complete tax calculation. Build a lot ledger with one row per acquisition and these columns:
- Token and represented security.
- Units acquired and the exact acquisition date and time.
- Purchase price in U.S. dollars and allocable acquisition fees.
- Any split, conversion, merger or redemption adjustment.
- Transfers, wallet addresses and the units remaining in each lot.
- Lot-selection instruction used for the sale.
- Units sold, selling proceeds and allocable selling costs.
- Any wash-sale adjustment or other basis adjustment.
Illustrative example: Assume you buy 10 tokens for $1,000 plus a $10 acquisition fee, later sell four for $520 and pay a $5 selling fee, and use specific identification. The four-token basis is $404 (four-tenths of the $1,010 total cost), the amount realized is $515, and the preliminary gain is $111. This example is only a calculation illustration; your actual basis can change because of lot selection, corporate actions or wash-sale rules.

Investigate whether the difference is a fee, a transfer, a token conversion, a timing issue or a broker error, and retain the reconciliation.
Wash-sale rules can connect the token and the underlying stock
The final regulations apply wash-sale reporting rules to tokenized securities treated as stock or securities under section 1091. If you sell a tokenized security at a loss and, within 30 days before or after that sale, buy the same tokenized security or the underlying stock or security, the loss may be disallowed when the other wash-sale conditions are met. The disallowed amount is added to the basis of the replacement position, which defers rather than permanently eliminates the loss.
Review both trading venues. A purchase of the underlying stock in a conventional brokerage account can matter even when the loss sale occurred in a crypto wallet, and the reverse can also be true. Match the dates and quantities across accounts before finalizing Form 8949. If the 1099-DA reports a wash-sale amount that your records do not support, document the discrepancy and apply the current instructions rather than deleting the adjustment without explanation.
Activities that may not appear on Form 1099-DA
Rewards and staking payments
The 2026 instructions say brokers do not report rewards or staking payments on Form 1099-DA. That reporting omission does not decide whether the payment is taxable income. Keep the date, units, fair market value in U.S. dollars and later disposition records separately from the token sale ledger.

Wrapping, unwrapping and liquidity activity
Notice 2024-57 temporarily excludes wrapping, unwrapping, liquidity-provider, staking, lending, short-sale and notional-principal-contract transactions from broker information reporting until further guidance. The exclusion concerns broker reporting; it does not erase an underlying income or gain-and-loss obligation. Segregate these transactions and apply the tax treatment supported by the facts and current IRS guidance.
Limited-access regulated networks
A sale that is a digital asset only because it clears or settles on a limited-access regulated network may remain reportable on Form 1099-B. Read the broker’s description and the current instructions before choosing a form. The network exception is not a license to ignore the transaction; it changes which information return may be used.
Section 1256 contracts and money-market-fund shares
Section 1256 contracts and qualifying money-market-fund shares have separate exceptions in the 2026 instructions. Do not place one of these instruments into the ordinary tokenized-stock workflow without checking the applicable form and treatment.

Tax reporting is easier when the platform’s records match the information required on Form 8949. Before opening or continuing an account, ask the provider for written answers to these questions:
| Capability | Why it matters | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Custodial-broker status and 1099-DA process | Establishes whether a statement is expected and which transactions it covers. | Account agreement, tax-document notice and the final statement. |
| Basis reporting scope | Basis may be absent for 2025 and may be phased in only for certain later acquisitions. | Basis-reported indicator, acquisition-date coverage and any exclusions. |
| CUSIP or other identifier | Helps match the token to the represented security and to the statement. | Identifier history and product description. |
| Specific-lot selection | Determines which acquisition lots are used when you sell. | Selection confirmation, timestamps and lot report. |
| Wash-sale data | Losses can be affected by purchases of either the token or the underlying security. | Broker adjustment detail and records from other accounts. |
| Wallet and transfer exports | Transfers can otherwise leave gaps in dates, units and ownership history. | CSV or equivalent export, wallet addresses and transaction IDs. |
| Form 8949-ready history | Reduces manual re-entry and makes a broker correction auditable. | Lot-level report showing proceeds, basis, dates, fees and adjustments. |
No platform export substitutes for your own review. Test a small historical period, compare the export with confirmations and verify that a transfer between accounts you control is not incorrectly treated as a sale.
Common filing mistakes and how to fix them
Treating a missing basis as zero
Why it fails: A zero basis can turn an ordinary sale into an overstated gain. Fix: reconstruct the acquisition lot from confirmations, wallet deposits, fees and corporate-action records, then retain the worksheet.
Best Value

- Helpful in various ways
Using Form 1099-B automatically
Why it fails: The ordinary dual-classification tokenized security is generally a 1099-DA asset under the 2026 instructions. Fix: identify what the token represents and follow the form your broker issued, checking the limited-access-network and other exceptions.
Reporting only the trades visible in one wallet
Why it fails: Hosted-wallet transfers and activity on another venue can alter the holding period, units and lot identity. Fix: reconcile every account and wallet by date, units and transaction ID.

Why it fails: The 30-day rule can reach a purchase of the represented stock or security. Fix: review all brokerage and token accounts for replacement purchases around a loss sale.
Assuming a broker’s transition relief covers you
Why it fails: Relief can concern broker penalties, not the taxpayer’s filing duty. Fix: report the taxable transaction using your records even when the statement is late or incomplete.
Omitting non-reported rewards or staking
Why it fails: A payment not shown on Form 1099-DA can still create an income obligation. Fix: keep a separate income and basis record for each payment and its later disposition.
When professional advice is warranted
Obtain advice from a tax professional familiar with digital assets and securities when the token’s legal rights are unclear, you received a corporate action, you used lending or liquidity arrangements, you have section 1256 or money-market-fund exposure, records span several jurisdictions, or a large loss could be affected by a wash sale. This guide addresses federal individual reporting; state, local, foreign and entity returns may require different analysis.
Keep an audit-ready file
Save the original statements and exports, not just a spreadsheet summary. Preserve confirmations, fee schedules, wallet addresses, transfer IDs, corporate-action notices, lot-selection instructions, basis calculations and copies of filed Forms 8949 and Schedule D. Record when each file was downloaded and keep an unchanged copy so a later correction can be traced to the underlying transaction.
