Report any change that could affect your Supplemental Security Income (SSI) eligibility or payment as soon as it happens. Use an approved electronic wage-reporting tool for monthly wages when SSA says you are eligible; use SSA’s phone, online, fax, mail, or local-office channels for other changes. Keep pay stubs or other evidence, record when and how you reported, and watch for SSA’s confirmation or follow-up.

What SSI recipients must report

SSI is based on financial need and household circumstances. A change that appears small—such as a new roommate, a different bank balance, or a few hours of work—can change the payment calculation. Social Security Administration (SSA) guidance says to report changes that may affect eligibility or the amount paid.

Contact and identity information

  • A name change.
  • A new mailing address or home address.
  • A new telephone number or other contact information.
  • A change in citizenship or other legal status.

Household and marital changes

  • Marriage, separation, divorce, or another change in marital status.
  • A birth or death in the household.
  • Someone moving into or out of your home.
  • A change in the number of people living with you or in who pays household expenses.

Living arrangements can affect SSI because SSA considers who lives with you and whether someone provides food or shelter. Report the change even if you are unsure whether it will alter your payment; SSA makes the eligibility and payment determination.

Income and employment

  • Starting or stopping a job.
  • A change in pay, hours, employer, or work schedule.
  • Monthly wages and other earned income.
  • Child support, unemployment benefits, or other unearned income.
  • Income received by a spouse when you are married and living together.
  • Self-employment income, reported according to SSA’s yearly self-employment process.

For a child receiving SSI, a parent’s income and resources can affect the calculation. Report changes that could alter that parental deeming calculation.

Resources and financial accounts

  • A new bank account or a change in an existing account balance.
  • A change in the value of property, vehicles, investments, or other things you own.
  • Money received from another source that changes your available resources.

Do not assume that a temporary balance or a jointly held account is irrelevant. Give SSA the facts and any documents it requests.

Disability, work incentives, and expenses

If you receive SSI because of a disability, report medical improvement and any change in your ability to work. Report starting or stopping work, changes in pay or hours, participation in Ticket to Work, and work or Plan to Achieve Self-Support (PASS) expenses. These details can affect both payment calculations and how SSA applies work incentives.

Institutions, warrants, school, and travel

  • Admission to or discharge from a hospital, prison, halfway house, nursing home, or another institution.
  • An arrest warrant.
  • School attendance for a person under age 22.
  • An absence from the United States lasting one month or longer.

Tell SSA the dates and location for an institutional stay or foreign absence. If a warrant or legal-status issue is involved, report it promptly and answer SSA’s questions accurately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Deadlines: when to report a change

SSA’s general rule is to report a reportable change as soon as possible and no later than the 10th day of the month after the month in which it occurred. For example, a change on September 18 should ordinarily be reported by October 10.

For wages, SSA encourages reporting by the sixth day of the month after the wages were paid. That earlier target gives SSA more time to enter the information before the next SSI payment is calculated. The outer reporting rule remains the 10th day for changes covered by SSA’s reporting guidance.

Change SSA timing guidance What to prepare
Monthly wages Submit by the sixth day of the following month when possible. Pay-period dates, gross wages, pay date, and pay stubs.
Other monthly income Report as it changes and within the general deadline. Source, amount, date received, and supporting statements.
Self-employment income SSA’s wage guidance says to report it yearly by January 10. Records showing business income and allowable expenses.
Address, household, marital, resource, institutional, or legal changes As soon as possible and no later than the 10th day of the following month. Dates, names, addresses, account details, and documents showing the change.

Late or inaccurate reporting can produce either an underpayment or an overpayment. An underpayment delays money you may be entitled to; an overpayment can create a debt that SSA asks you to repay. SSA’s 2026 reporting-responsibilities publication says it may reduce a monthly SSI payment by $25 to $100 for each failure to report or late report described in that publication. That reduction is a possible consequence, not an automatic penalty in every case.

SSA Mobile Wage Reporting Monthly SSI wages. Only certain recipients and authorized reporters qualify; SSA or the local office determines availability. Social Security numbers, report month, gross wages, and pay-stub images or entered pay-stub details.
Automated Telephone Wage Reporting Monthly SSI wages when the automated system is available to you. Eligibility is limited; confirm with SSA or your local office. Social Security numbers and total gross wages from the pay stubs.
SSA telephone service Direct-deposit changes and questions or instructions for other changes. Call during SSA’s listed service hours; language assistance is available. Identity information, the details of the change, and current and new bank information when relevant.
Local office, fax, mail, or in-person visit Non-wage changes and wage reports when electronic tools are unavailable. Use the office assigned to your case and follow its submission instructions. A written explanation, names and Social Security numbers, dates, gross wage totals if applicable, and copies of evidence.

Do not assume that an automated option is available merely because you receive SSI. SSA says only certain individuals can use the electronic wage tools. Ask your local office which option is enabled for your record and how to start.

How to report wages online

Online wage reporting is designed for a specific task: sending monthly wage information so SSA can calculate SSI or disability-related payments accurately. It is different from reporting a marriage, move, new bank account, or other non-wage change.

  1. Confirm eligibility. Contact SSA or your local office to verify that you, your representative payee, spouse, parent, or sponsor may use the online wage tool for your record.
  2. Activate or sign in to my Social Security. The myWageReport route requires an active account. Use your own credentials and do not share your password.
  3. Gather the pay information. Have the wage reporter’s Social Security number, the wage earner’s Social Security number, each pay period’s start and end dates, the gross amount paid, and the pay date.
  4. Use gross pay, not take-home pay. Gross wages are the amount before taxes and other deductions. Read the figures directly from the pay stubs.
  5. Enter the report month and pay details. Check that the pay date and pay-period dates match the stubs. If more than one paycheck falls in the month, enter each as the tool directs.
  6. Upload or retain pay-stub evidence. Keep the original stubs and any electronic copies. The mobile route supports pay-stub images; the online account may request the information shown on the stubs.
  7. Review before submitting. A transposed digit, wrong pay date, or net-pay figure can cause an incorrect SSI calculation.
  8. Save the submission confirmation. Record the date, confirmation number or screen, month reported, and total wages.

SSA’s FAQ says SSI wage reports submitted through my Social Security are received by SSA at submission. That confirms delivery of the report; it does not mean the payment calculation is completed immediately or that SSA will not ask for clarification.

How to report wages with the mobile app or automated phone system

Mobile Wage Reporting application

The mobile application can accept pay-stub images or the information entered from them. Before starting, make sure the images are readable and show the employee name, pay dates, gross amount, and employer information. Submit only the month requested by the app, review every entry, and save the confirmation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Automated Telephone Wage Reporting

The automated telephone system uses the total gross wages from your pay stubs. It may not ask you to upload an image, so keep the stubs in case SSA later verifies the report. Enter or speak each figure carefully, listen to the read-back, and record the confirmation at the end.

If an electronic tool rejects you

A rejection does not mean that you have no reporting obligation. Contact the local office promptly and ask which method it accepts. SSA says that when electronic tools are unavailable, you can send the prior month’s gross wage total, the relevant names and Social Security numbers, and the requested pay information by fax, mail, phone, or an in-person visit. Follow the office’s instructions and retain proof of delivery.

Employer changes and Payroll Information Exchange

If you change employers, SSA’s October 2026 guidance says to provide the new employer’s information and employer identification number before using an automated wage tool. This lets SSA match the wage report to the correct employer.

If you authorize employer wage exchange through Payroll Information Exchange (PIE), continue using another wage-reporting method until SSA confirms that PIE has started. Authorization alone is not confirmation that the exchange is active, so do not stop your regular reports prematurely.

How to report non-wage changes

Call SSA for direct-deposit changes

For a change to direct-deposit details, call 1-800-772-1213. Have the current and new routing numbers and account numbers ready. TTY service is available at 1-800-325-0778. SSA lists telephone service in most U.S. time zones Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., with English, Spanish, and other languages available.

Use the call to report the banking change and ask whether any additional verification is required. Do not close the old account until you understand when the next payment will be sent and whether SSA has completed the update.

Use online updating when SSA offers it for your information

SSA provides online updating for some personal information. The available options depend on the type of change and your account. If the service asks for evidence, upload clear copies with a short explanation, your Social Security number, and current contact information. Keep the originals and note the upload date.

Contact the local office for other changes

For a move, household change, marriage, resource change, institutional stay, warrant, school attendance, or another non-wage issue, contact the local Social Security office promptly. Use SSA’s office locator to identify the correct office, then ask whether it accepts the report by phone, fax, mail, secure upload, or appointment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You generally do not have to visit an office for every change. The office may complete the update by telephone or request documents electronically. If it requires an appointment, ask what evidence to bring so you do not make an unnecessary second trip.

Reporting in person, by fax, or by mail

  1. Write a complete explanation. State what changed, the date it changed, who is affected, and how to reach you.
  2. Include identifying information. Provide the beneficiary’s name and Social Security number, plus the name and Social Security number of the wage earner when reporting wages.
  3. Attach copies, not irreplaceable originals. Use pay stubs, lease records, bank statements, marriage or death records, discharge papers, school records, or other documents that establish the change.
  4. Label the evidence. Note the relevant month and explain any item that could be misunderstood, such as a one-time deposit or a joint account.
  5. Submit through the office’s approved route. Fax numbers, mailing addresses, and document-upload instructions vary by office. Confirm the destination before sending sensitive information.
  6. Keep proof. Save a fax transmission page, certified-mail receipt, office-stamped copy, appointment confirmation, or other evidence showing when SSA received the report.

At an in-person visit, bring identification, the documents, and a written list of the changes. Ask the employee to confirm what was entered and whether anything else is required.

What information and documents to gather

  • Wages: pay stubs for the report month, pay-period start and end dates, gross pay, pay dates, employer name, and employer identification number when changing employers.
  • Other income: award letters, benefit statements, child-support records, unemployment statements, or payment records showing the source, amount, and date received.
  • Household changes: names of people moving in or out, move-in or move-out dates, rent or mortgage information, and who pays food or shelter costs.
  • Resources: bank statements, account numbers, ownership information, sale or purchase documents, and the value and date of a change.
  • Institutional stays: facility name, admission and discharge dates, and any paperwork supplied by the facility.
  • Work incentives: proof of work expenses, PASS expenses, Ticket to Work participation, and medical or employment information SSA requests.

Send only the information needed for the reported change, use the secure route SSA identifies, and redact unrelated account details when the receiving office permits it.

Special situations that commonly cause errors

Two paychecks in one month

Report wages by the month the wages were paid, not merely the month the work was performed. If two paychecks were paid in the same calendar month, include both as the wage tool or local office instructs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Irregular hours or changing pay

Report the actual gross amount shown on each pay stub. Do not estimate from an hourly rate when the check includes overtime, bonuses, unpaid leave, or a correction.

Self-employment

SSA’s wage guidance treats self-employment differently from ordinary monthly wages: report self-employment income yearly by January 10, while reporting other income changes as they occur. Keep business records throughout the year so the annual report is based on documented income and expenses.

Spouse or parent income

If you are married and living with your spouse, changes in the spouse’s income or resources may affect SSI. For a child applicant or recipient, a parent’s income and resources may matter. Report the change even when the money is not paid directly to the SSI recipient.

Concurrent SSI and SSDI

A person receiving both programs may have separate reporting rules and may be eligible for more than one wage-reporting route. Identify both benefits when contacting SSA and ask whether one submission updates both records. Do not assume that a report made for one program automatically satisfies every SSI obligation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshooting and recovery

You missed the preferred wage-reporting date

Submit the report immediately rather than waiting for the next month. Use the electronic tool if it remains available; otherwise contact the local office and explain the delay. Keep the pay stubs and proof of submission.

You entered the wrong amount

Contact SSA or the local office as soon as you discover the error. State the amount submitted, the correct gross amount, the pay date, and the confirmation number. Do not submit a second, conflicting report without explaining that it corrects the first.

Your account or app will not work

Take a screenshot of the error if it does not expose unnecessary personal information, then use the local office’s approved alternative. An unavailable tool does not remove the reporting duty.

You cannot reach the office

Try the listed telephone hours, the office’s fax or mail route, or an in-person appointment. Keep a log of call dates, times, names or extensions when available, and documents sent. If a deadline is close, explain that urgency in your written cover note.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SSA says it did not receive your report

Provide the confirmation screen, fax receipt, tracking record, stamped copy, or call notes. Ask whether SSA needs the report resent and whether the payment calculation can be corrected. Continue reporting future months while the earlier submission is reviewed.

After you report: a practical recordkeeping checklist

  • Keep the original pay stubs and copies of all documents submitted.
  • Record the change date, report date, channel, office, and confirmation number.
  • Check the next SSI notice or payment for an unexpected change.
  • Answer SSA follow-up requests by their stated deadline.
  • Report subsequent changes separately; one report does not cover future months.
  • Ask SSA to explain any overpayment or underpayment notice and compare it with your records.

SSA’s own explanation captures the purpose of the process: “You must report your monthly wages and changes in income from other sources to get accurate monthly SSI payments.” The same principle applies to living arrangements, marital status, resources, and other circumstances that determine SSI.

Quick decision guide

  1. Is the change monthly wages? If yes, first ask whether you are eligible for myWageReport, the mobile app, or automated telephone reporting.
  2. Is it a direct-deposit change? Call SSA with your current and new routing and account numbers.
  3. Is it another personal, household, income, resource, institutional, legal, or school change? Contact the local office and ask for the fastest approved route.
  4. Do you lack electronic access or eligibility? Use the office’s phone, fax, mail, or in-person process and retain delivery proof.
  5. Could the change affect a spouse, parent, or representative payee? Include that person’s information and explain the relationship.
