For Assessment Year (AY) 2026–27, an individual or Hindu Undivided Family (HUF) generally reports gains from redeeming or transferring debt mutual-fund units in Schedule CG (Capital Gains) of the applicable income-tax return. If you have capital-gains income but no income chargeable under “Profits and Gains of Business or Profession,” the Income Tax Department identifies ITR-2 as the relevant form, subject to all other eligibility conditions. Do not put debt-fund gains in Schedule 112A, which is intended for specified equity shares, equity-oriented mutual-fund units and business-trust units on which securities transaction tax (STT) is paid.

Start with the assessment year and your return eligibility

AY 2026–27 generally covers income earned during Financial Year (FY) 2025–26. Select the return form from your complete income profile, not from the mutual fund alone.

When ITR-2 is generally appropriate

The department’s AY 2026–27 guidance allows an individual or HUF to file ITR-2 when income includes short-term or long-term capital gains and the person does not have income chargeable under the head “Profits and Gains of Business or Profession.” The guidance states that ITR-2 can be used regardless of the amount of total income, provided the remaining conditions for that form are met.

When another form may be needed

If you have income chargeable under business or profession, ITR-2 may not be the correct form. The same issue can arise from other facts that affect return eligibility, such as your taxpayer status or the nature of income not described here. Check the live AY 2026–27 eligibility questions in the filing utility before beginning the capital-gains schedule.

Use Schedule CG, not Schedule 112A

Debt mutual-fund redemption or transfer gains belong under the capital-gains head. In ITR-2, that means Schedule CG, where short-term and long-term capital gains and losses are reported for the relevant capital assets.

Return area What it covers Debt mutual-fund gain?
Schedule CG Capital gains and losses, including short-term and long-term categories for applicable capital assets Yes
Schedule 112A Qualifying equity shares, equity-oriented mutual-fund units and business-trust units on which STT is paid No

Schedule 112A is not a general mutual-fund schedule. Its description in the ITR-2 manual is tied to equity-oriented instruments and the STT condition. A debt-oriented fund should therefore not be moved there merely because the investment is a mutual-fund unit.

The exact row or field displayed for a debt-fund transaction can vary with the return form version, asset classification and utility schema. Use the current AY 2026–27 labels and validations rather than copying a row number from an older article or video.

Understand the section 50AA date test

Section 50AA of the Income-tax Act is the central classification rule for many newer debt-fund investments. It applies to a unit of a “Specified Mutual Fund” acquired on or after 1 April 2023, along with other instruments listed in that provision. When the covered unit is transferred, redeemed or matures, the resulting gain is deemed to arise from a short-term capital asset, regardless of how long you held it.

Why “debt fund” is not enough by itself

The legal test uses the statutory expression “Specified Mutual Fund,” not every product label that an asset manager may use. You must check the fund’s characteristics against the definition that applies to the transaction. Do not assume that all funds marketed as debt, fixed-income or income funds have identical treatment without checking the applicable law and fund documentation.

The definition changed

The definition of specified mutual fund was amended by the Finance Act (No. 2), 2024. Because both the acquisition date and the version of the statutory definition matter, classify each relevant lot using the law applicable to that transaction. A statement that every debt-oriented mutual-fund unit is automatically covered would be too broad.

Question for each lot Why it matters
When was the unit acquired? Section 50AA’s specified-unit rule is tied to acquisitions on or after 1 April 2023.
Does the unit meet the applicable specified-mutual-fund definition? The statutory category can differ from the fund’s marketing label, and the definition was amended in 2024.
When was it transferred, redeemed or matured? That is the event for which the capital gain is reported and classified.
Which assessment-year utility are you filing? Form fields and validations can change even when the underlying transaction law does not.

What about units bought before 1 April 2023?

The automatic short-term deeming rule in section 50AA is expressly linked to specified units acquired on or after 1 April 2023. For an earlier acquisition, do not apply that rule automatically. Determine the classification under the law applicable to the asset and transaction, using the actual acquisition and transfer dates and the fund’s legal characteristics. If the dates span a change in the definition or you hold multiple lots, a tax professional can help document the conclusion.

What changed in the AY 2026–27 Schedule CG layout

The department’s AY 2026–27 FAQ says Schedule CG no longer requires the earlier split between transfers made before 23 July 2024 and transfers made on or after 23 July 2024. Older walkthroughs may still show two date-based sections. Do not recreate those obsolete fields in the current return.

This is a reporting-format change, not a repeal of section 50AA. Transaction dates remain essential for determining whether the specified-mutual-fund rule applies and for applying the correct capital-gain treatment. The removal of the form split also does not make acquisition date irrelevant.

The department’s downloads page listed an AY 2026–27 common ITR utility release dated 2 September 2026 at the time of review. Use the latest utility available when you prepare and submit the return, because later releases can alter labels, validations or prefilled data.

Step-by-step: enter a debt-fund gain in the return

  1. Confirm the assessment year. For this guide, AY 2026–27 covers FY 2025–26 income. Do not mix transactions from another financial year into the current return.
  2. Confirm the form. Answer the portal’s eligibility questions. ITR-2 is generally suitable for an individual or HUF with capital gains and no business or professional income, subject to the other conditions.
  3. Collect transaction records. Obtain the AMC, registrar or broker capital-gains statement and transaction ledger. For every relevant lot, record the acquisition date, number of units, cost, redemption or transfer date, proceeds and any adjustment shown in the statement.
  4. Identify the legal category. Check whether each unit meets the applicable “Specified Mutual Fund” definition and whether it was acquired on or after 1 April 2023. If the fund changed characteristics, review the facts for the period in which the units were acquired and transferred.
  5. Compute the gain or loss. Apply the capital-gain rules that correspond to the classification established in the previous step. Keep the working papers that connect each sale or redemption to its acquisition lot and cost.
  6. Open Schedule CG. Select the current-year short-term or long-term capital-gain area indicated by the utility. Enter the debt-fund result there, not in Schedule 112A. Follow the live labels because the exact field is not guaranteed to be identical across utility versions.
  7. Use consolidation only where permitted. The ITR-2 manual allows generally consolidated computation for multiple assets of the same type. Keep a lot-level schedule separately so the consolidated figure can be traced back to individual transactions.
  8. Review the return summary and tax computation. Check that the Schedule CG amount flows into the total-income and tax-computation sections, then reconcile the result with your records before submitting and verifying the return through the portal’s current workflow.

How to organize the calculation

Build a lot-level worksheet first

A practical worksheet should have one line for each acquisition lot and each redemption or transfer. Include the fund and plan identification, folio or account reference, acquisition date, units, purchase cost, transfer date, gross proceeds and the resulting gain or loss. Mark whether the lot is being tested under section 50AA and note the reason for the short-term or long-term classification used in Schedule CG.

Reconcile statements instead of relying on prefilled data alone

Prefilled information can be useful, but it should be checked against the AMC or broker statement and your bank records. Look for partial redemptions, systematic investment plan installments, switches between schemes, dividend or income reinvestment entries, and transactions appearing in a different financial year from the date you expected. A mismatch should be resolved before filing rather than silently overwritten.

Keep debt-fund reporting separate from land-and-building instructions

The ITR-2 manual gives a separate item-by-item computation rule for land and building transfers. That instruction should not be imported into mutual-fund reporting. For funds, maintain the supporting lot schedule and use the Schedule CG fields provided for the applicable capital-asset category.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Putting the gain in Schedule 112A: Move the amount to the applicable Schedule CG section. Schedule 112A is for its specified equity and STT-linked transactions, not ordinary debt-fund gains.
  • Using an old before/after 23 July 2024 split: The AY 2026–27 FAQ says that split has been removed. Reopen the current utility and follow its single current-year layout.
  • Calling every holding long-term because it was held for years: For a specified mutual-fund unit acquired on or after 1 April 2023, section 50AA deems the gain short-term regardless of holding duration.
  • Applying section 50AA to every product labelled “debt”: Verify the statutory definition and the fund’s characteristics for the relevant date. The 2024 amendment means the definition cannot be treated as permanently unchanged.
  • Ignoring acquisition dates: A redemption date alone is insufficient. The 1 April 2023 acquisition-date test can change the applicable rule.
  • Copying an exact row number from an older guide: Field names and validations can change between utilities. Use the live AY 2026–27 form.
  • Reporting only the net amount shown by a platform: Preserve the underlying transaction statement so costs, proceeds, partial redemptions and losses can be checked.
  • Assuming the return form determines the tax amount: Final liability also depends on your complete income, residency, losses, exemptions and the rates applicable to your facts. The capital-gain entry alone cannot establish the amount payable.

When a professional review is sensible

Consider qualified tax assistance when you have business or professional income, are filing for an HUF with additional sources, hold units acquired across several legal-rule periods, cannot establish whether a fund meets the specified-mutual-fund definition, or need to carry forward or set off losses. The same is true when the platform statement, annual information statement and bank records do not agree.

For a straightforward redemption, the essential control is traceability: every figure entered in Schedule CG should be supported by an acquisition record, a transfer or redemption record and a calculation showing how the reported gain or loss was produced.
