If you sold BOXX shares, report the sale as a securities transaction using your broker’s Form 1099-B, Form 8949 and Schedule D as applicable. Use the actual proceeds, cost basis, acquisition date and sale date shown in your records; the holding period determines whether the gain or loss is short-term or long-term.
Distributions are a separate tax event. Report amounts and classifications from the relevant year’s Form 1099-DIV and the fund’s tax materials. A distribution can be ordinary income, capital gain or a combination, and reinvesting it does not by itself make a taxable distribution tax-free. The process below is for individual U.S. federal income-tax returns; state, local, retirement-account and unusual-transaction rules may require professional advice.

Start by separating the two tax events
BOXX is the Alpha Architect 1-3 Month Box ETF. Its prospectus describes a strategy intended to track the price and yield performance of the 1–3 month U.S. Treasury bill market before fees and expenses, using exchange-listed long and short options combinations known as box spreads. That investment strategy does not determine the entries on your tax return. Your tax documents for the year do.

Do not combine a sale with a distribution. Selling shares creates a capital transaction even if the fund also paid a distribution during the year. A distribution is reported according to its Form 1099-DIV classification even when you used it to buy additional shares.

Collect and reconcile your records
Before entering numbers, assemble the documents for the tax year you are filing. Brokers sometimes issue corrected statements, so use the final version and retain earlier versions to explain any changes.
- The broker’s year-specific Form 1099-B for every BOXX sale.
- The broker’s Form 1099-DIV for BOXX distributions, if any.
- Purchase confirmations, sale confirmations and the broker’s lot-level cost-basis report.
- Records of reinvested distributions and any shares acquired through those reinvestments.
- Corrected Forms 1099-B or 1099-DIV received after the original statement.
- Fund tax information for the same tax year. The fund’s prospectus says distributions can have more than one tax character, so the year-specific tax insert is more useful than assumptions based on the fund’s investment strategy.
Compare the number of shares sold, trade dates, proceeds and basis on your confirmations with the 1099-B. Confirm that every distribution on the 1099-DIV appears in your account history. If a statement changes, wait for the corrected form when practical and update the return rather than silently using an obsolete amount.
Report a BOXX sale on Form 8949 and Schedule D
1. Read the Form 1099-B transaction details
For each sale, identify the proceeds, cost basis, acquisition date and sale date. The broker may report basis to the Internal Revenue Service, or it may show that basis was not reported. The basis-reporting status affects whether you can use the summary treatment described in the IRS instructions.

Follow the instructions for the tax year being filed; the 2025 instructions are available at IRS Instructions for Form 8949. Those instructions also explain when transactions with basis reported to the IRS and no adjustments may be summarized directly on Schedule D instead of being listed one by one on Form 8949.
2. Match each lot to the correct dates and basis
Use the actual purchase and sale dates, not the date you downloaded the statement or the date cash settled. If you bought BOXX in several lots, the broker’s lot report should show which lots were sold. Check that the basis includes the broker’s reported amount and any lawful adjustments reflected in your records.

Do not substitute the share price on a website for the proceeds or basis on your tax documents. A market quote is not a tax record. If your own records differ from the 1099-B, investigate the difference before filing.
3. Determine short-term or long-term status
The BOXX prospectus describes the general federal holding-period rule: a gain or loss is generally long-term when shares were held for more than one year and short-term when held for one year or less. Count from the acquisition date through the disposition date using the dates in your broker records and the applicable IRS instructions.
Apply the rule separately to each tax lot. A single sale can contain both short-term and long-term lots if you acquired shares at different times. Do not label every BOXX sale short-term or every sale long-term merely because of the fund’s strategy or because a previous year’s sale had a particular character.
4. Enter the transaction on Form 8949 when required
When Form 8949 is required, place short-term transactions in the short-term section and long-term transactions in the long-term section. Enter the description, dates, proceeds, basis and any adjustment required by the instructions. If an adjustment applies, use the appropriate adjustment code and explanation required for that situation; do not invent a code or omit a documented adjustment.
For transactions that qualify for summary reporting, follow the current Schedule D instructions rather than duplicating the same sale on both forms. The IRS rules depend on details such as whether basis was reported and whether an adjustment is needed, so verify the conditions for the filing year.

5. Carry totals to Schedule D
Transfer the Form 8949 totals, or the eligible summarized totals, to the short-term and long-term sections of Schedule D. Schedule D combines those results with other capital transactions and applies the ordering and netting rules in the instructions. The result is your net short-term and long-term capital gain or loss for the return; the form, not the fund name, determines where the amount is carried next.

How the holding period affects a BOXX sale
Holding period is a property of your shares, not a permanent feature of BOXX. The same fund can produce short-term treatment for one lot and long-term treatment for another.
- Held one year or less: the prospectus describes the resulting gain or loss as generally short-term.
- Held more than one year: the prospectus describes the resulting gain or loss as generally long-term.
- Multiple lots: calculate the period for each lot that was actually disposed of.
Use the broker’s reported dates as a starting point, then reconcile them to your confirmations. If a transfer between accounts, gift, inherited position, or other unusual event affects the acquisition date, ordinary holding-period assumptions may not apply; obtain advice before changing the broker’s information.
Report BOXX distributions from Form 1099-DIV
Use the year-specific classification
The BOXX prospectus states: “The Fund’s distributions, if any, will be taxable as ordinary income, capital gain, or some combination of both.” It also states that short-term capital-gain distributions are taxable to shareholders as ordinary income for U.S. federal income-tax purposes. Those statements describe possible categories, not a guaranteed classification for every year.
Enter the amounts from your applicable Form 1099-DIV in the locations specified by that form and the instructions for the tax year. If the fund supplies a tax insert or supplemental classification, use it to understand the boxes on the 1099-DIV. Do not estimate a category from the fund’s name, its stated Treasury-bill objective or a prior year’s statement.

Reinvested distributions remain reportable
If you elected automatic reinvestment, the cash may never have reached your bank account, but the distribution can still be taxable. Report the amount and classification shown on Form 1099-DIV. The reinvestment generally also creates a new share lot; retain the reinvestment date and amount because that information becomes part of the basis record for a later sale.
Distributions and sales in the same year
Report the distribution and the sale separately. The distribution belongs to the dividend or capital-gain reporting section indicated by Form 1099-DIV. The sale belongs on Form 8949 and Schedule D, subject to the IRS summary rules. Do not add a distribution to sale proceeds, and do not reduce sale proceeds by a distribution unless a specific tax rule and your records require an adjustment.
What the prospectus does—and does not—tell you
The prospectus explains that BOXX uses box-spread options and seeks Treasury-bill-like price and yield performance before expenses. It also describes potential federal tax outcomes for distributions and dispositions. It does not provide your personal tax basis, identify which lots you sold, or replace the broker’s forms for a particular year.
In particular, the available official material does not establish a fixed annual distribution amount or a permanent rule that BOXX never distributes, that every BOXX gain is long-term, or that Treasury interest is always converted into capital gain. Check the actual Form 1099-B, Form 1099-DIV and current fund tax information for the year at issue.
Common complications and how to handle them
Your 1099-B basis is missing or appears wrong
Compare the statement with purchase confirmations and your lot report. Basis can be unavailable to a broker for some positions or can differ after an account transfer. Do not silently copy a number you know is inaccurate. Gather supporting records, ask the broker for a corrected statement when appropriate, and use the IRS instructions or a qualified tax professional to determine the proper reporting and any required adjustment.

You received a corrected form
Use the corrected Form 1099-B or 1099-DIV when preparing the return if it arrives before filing. If you already filed and the correction changes tax items, determine whether an amended return is required under the instructions for your filing year. Keep both versions and the broker’s explanation.
A sale includes several tax lots
Export or request the broker’s lot-level detail. Separate short-term and long-term lots, verify each basis and date, and then combine only after the classifications are correct. A single line on a consolidated statement can conceal multiple holding periods.
You suspect a wash-sale or other adjustment
The broker may report an adjustment, but special transactions can require review of more than one account or security. Follow the current Form 8949 instructions and preserve the broker’s adjustment detail. If the facts are not routine, have a tax professional determine the correct code, basis treatment and reporting period.
You held BOXX in a retirement account
Tax reporting can differ for an IRA, employer plan or other tax-advantaged account. The federal forms discussed here generally apply to taxable brokerage activity; do not assume a taxable-account 1099-B workflow applies inside a retirement account. Check the custodian’s forms and the rules for that account type.
You moved shares between brokers
Keep the original acquisition dates and basis with the transferred position. A receiving broker may show incomplete basis until records are imported. Reconcile both brokers’ statements before selling and retain transfer documentation.
State and local tax questions
Federal forms do not settle every state or local issue. The BOXX prospectus notes that state and local taxes may apply. State treatment of capital gains, dividends, Treasury-related income, basis adjustments and reporting forms can differ. Review the rules for your residence and any jurisdiction that taxes your income; obtain state-specific advice when the amount is material or your circumstances are unusual.
A practical filing checklist
- Download the final Form 1099-B and Form 1099-DIV for the tax year, including corrected versions.
- Collect trade confirmations, lot-level basis records and reinvestment records.
- List every BOXX sale with proceeds, basis, acquisition date and sale date.
- Classify each lot as short-term or long-term using the actual dates and the more-than-one-year rule described in the prospectus.
- Determine whether each transaction belongs on Form 8949 or qualifies for the Schedule D summary method under the current IRS instructions.
- Enter required Form 8949 adjustments with the prescribed code and explanation.
- Transfer the short-term and long-term totals to Schedule D.
- Enter Form 1099-DIV amounts in the corresponding dividend or capital-gain sections; include reinvested amounts.
- Compare the completed return with the broker statements one last time and retain all supporting records.
When professional help is warranted
Consider a qualified tax professional when basis is missing, forms conflict, you sold lots across multiple accounts, a corrected statement arrives after filing, or a wash-sale, transfer, gift, inheritance or retirement-account rule may apply. A preparer can help interpret the forms, but you remain responsible for providing complete records and reviewing the return’s classifications.

Bottom line
Report a BOXX sale as a capital-asset transaction using the broker’s Form 1099-B, the actual lot dates and basis, Form 8949 when required, and Schedule D. Report distributions separately from Form 1099-DIV and the fund’s tax materials, even when distributions were reinvested. Because BOXX’s tax character can vary by year and by transaction, rely on the documents for the year you are filing rather than assumptions about the fund’s strategy.
