For Assessment Year (AY) 2026–27, report agricultural income separately in Schedule EI (Details of Exempt Income). Report salary, house-property income, capital gains, business or profession income, and other income in the schedule for that particular income head. Do not combine every receipt in Schedule EI.
Your correct return form depends on your taxpayer status, residence, agricultural-income amount, business or profession income, capital gains, foreign income or assets, and other eligibility conditions. Agricultural income above ₹5,000 makes ITR-1 unavailable for AY 2026–27; ITR-2 may be available to an individual or HUF without income chargeable under “Profits and Gains of Business or Profession,” subject to all of ITR-2’s conditions.

What the return is asking you to disclose
The notified AY 2026–27 return describes Schedule EI as “Details of Exempt Income (Income not to be included in Total Income or not chargeable to tax).” Agricultural income is therefore disclosed even when it is not included in total income under the normal computation. Disclosure is not the same as treating the amount as taxable salary, business income, or income from other sources.
Schedule EI is only one part of the return. It is not a universal agricultural and non-agricultural income schedule. A filer with farm receipts and salary, for example, uses Schedule EI for the agricultural amount and the salary schedule for salary. A filer with farm receipts and a consulting business must disclose the agricultural amount in Schedule EI and the consulting income in the business or profession schedule, while also selecting a form that permits business or profession income.

Step 1: Confirm the assessment year and your profile
Use the AY 2026–27 form set
This guide is anchored to the Income Tax Department’s notified forms and eligibility guidance for AY 2026–27. The assessment year is the year for which the income is being reported, not simply the calendar year in which you open the filing utility. Select the AY 2026–27 return and check the Department’s current common utility and release history before submission, because fields and validations can be updated in the notified utility.
Record the facts that determine the form
Before entering any figures, write down your taxpayer type (individual or HUF), residential status, every income head, agricultural-income amount, business or profession activity, capital-gains transactions, foreign income or assets, and any other fact that can trigger a form exclusion. A return form cannot be selected reliably from agricultural income alone.
Which ITR form should I use if I have farm income and salary?
There is no single form for every person with farm income and salary. The following checkpoints reflect the AY 2026–27 eligibility material published by the Income Tax Department:
| Fact | Effect on form selection |
|---|---|
| Agricultural income up to ₹5,000 | This amount, by itself, does not trigger the agricultural-income exclusion from ITR-1. All other ITR-1 conditions still apply. |
| Agricultural income above ₹5,000 | ITR-1 is unavailable for AY 2026–27 on this ground. ITR-2 may be available if the filer is an eligible individual or HUF and has no income chargeable under “Profits and Gains of Business or Profession,” along with meeting ITR-2’s other conditions. |
| Income chargeable under “Profits and Gains of Business or Profession” | ITR-2 is not the appropriate form. Check the other notified form applicable to your business or profession facts. |
| Individual who is not an eligible resident for ITR-1 | ITR-1’s resident-individual restriction can prevent its use even when agricultural income is within ₹5,000. |
| HUF, non-resident individual, capital gains, foreign income or assets, or other complexity | These facts can move the filer outside ITR-1 or impose another form’s conditions. Apply the complete eligibility checklist rather than relying on one threshold. |
ITR-1 is intended only for individuals who satisfy its complete conditions. The Department’s ITR-2 guidance covers individuals and HUFs, resident or non-resident, but specifically excludes income chargeable under the business or profession head. “ITR-2 may be available” is not an automatic recommendation: total income, asset, income-head, and other restrictions must still be checked.

How do I show agricultural income in ITR?
Use this sequence to complete the agricultural disclosure without mixing it with taxable income heads.
- Classify each receipt. Decide whether the receipt is agricultural income for the relevant tax rules, a non-agricultural receipt, or a receipt for which a prescribed allocation rule applies. Do not classify a receipt as fully exempt merely because it is connected with a farm.
- Separate gross receipts from costs. Assemble the agricultural receipts for the year and the expenditure incurred on agriculture. Keep a working paper that ties the figures to bank entries, sale records, lease documents, invoices, and other evidence appropriate to your activity.
- Identify eligible earlier agricultural losses. Check the Schedule EI line for unabsorbed agricultural losses from the previous eight assessment years. Use only the amount that is eligible under the applicable rules and that you can support from earlier returns or records.
- Identify any allocated agricultural portion. The form has a separate line for the agricultural-income portion dealt with under specified rules, including Rules 7A, 7B, or 8. Where one of those rules applies, follow the prescribed allocation instead of putting the entire receipt into the ordinary agricultural-receipts line.
- Enter the Schedule EI figures. Complete the gross receipts, agricultural expenditure, eligible prior-year loss, allocated portion, and net agricultural income fields in the notified form.
- Apply the loss instruction. If the Schedule EI calculation produces a loss, enter net agricultural income as nil, as directed by the notified AY 2026–27 form. Do not turn a negative result into a positive number or carry it into a taxable income schedule.
- Complete land particulars when triggered. If net agricultural income exceeds ₹5 lakh, provide the land-level details requested in Schedule EI for each agricultural land.
Classify receipts before you calculate
The form itself signals that some receipts associated with agricultural activity are handled under Rules 7A, 7B, or 8 rather than being entered wholly as exempt agricultural receipts. Those rules can allocate an agricultural portion and another portion for treatment under the relevant income head. The reviewed filing guidance does not establish every borderline test or the complete calculation for those rules, so do not invent a percentage or use a generic farm-income formula. Consult the applicable statutory provisions and rules, or a qualified tax professional, when a receipt is mixed, processed, or otherwise borderline.
What belongs in Schedule EI
| Schedule EI item | What to enter or verify |
|---|---|
| Gross agricultural receipts | The year’s agricultural receipts that belong in the ordinary agricultural-income calculation, after excluding amounts that the form directs you to handle under the specified allocation rules. |
| Expenditure incurred on agriculture | Eligible agricultural expenditure incurred for producing the reported receipts, supported by your records. |
| Unabsorbed agricultural loss | Eligible unabsorbed agricultural loss from the previous eight assessment years. |
| Agricultural portion under specified rules | The agricultural-income portion allocated under Rules 7A, 7B, or 8, where applicable. |
| Net agricultural income | The resulting net amount for the year; enter nil when the calculation produces a loss. |
Land details when net agricultural income exceeds ₹5 lakh
The AY 2026–27 form asks for particulars of each agricultural land when net agricultural income exceeds ₹5 lakh. The requested fields are:
- district and PIN code;
- area in acres;
- whether the land is owned or leased; and
- whether it is irrigated or rain-fed.
This ₹5 lakh trigger is a Schedule EI land-particulars requirement. It is separate from the ₹5,000 threshold used in the ITR-1 eligibility rule. Do not use one threshold as a substitute for the other.

How to report non-agricultural income
After completing the agricultural classification, place every non-agricultural receipt in the schedule corresponding to its income head. The return’s structure follows the head of income; it does not provide one common “non-agricultural income” box.
Salary or pension
Enter salary or pension in the salary schedule and reconcile the figures with the information and certificates available to you. Keep agricultural receipts out of this schedule even when the same bank account receives both salary and farm proceeds.
Income from house property
Use the house-property schedule for rent or other income chargeable under that head. A property used in or connected with farming does not automatically convert every receipt into agricultural income; classify the receipt by the governing rules before entry.

Report gains or losses from transfers of capital assets in the capital-gains schedule. Sale proceeds from an agricultural activity and gains from transferring land are not interchangeable concepts. If a transaction involves land, examine its legal character and the applicable rules rather than moving the amount into Schedule EI solely because the land was used for cultivation.
Rank #4
Business or profession
Report business or profession receipts and related figures in the business or profession schedule. This classification is especially important for form selection: ITR-2 is not for income chargeable under “Profits and Gains of Business or Profession.” A person with a farm-related business, processing activity, trading activity, or separate professional practice should check the form designed for those facts.
Income from other sources
Interest, dividends, and other receipts that fall under the residual “other sources” head belong in that schedule, not in Schedule EI. The fact that the money was deposited in an account used for agricultural receipts does not change its income head.
Is agricultural income taxable in India?
The notified return labels Schedule EI as income “not to be included in Total Income or not chargeable to tax,” which is why eligible agricultural income is disclosed separately rather than added as ordinary taxable income. However, that statement does not resolve every receipt connected with farming.

The form therefore asks for an agricultural portion separately when those rules apply. The exact legal test for borderline receipts and the detailed partial-integration calculation are not established by the filing pages used for this guide. Do not assume that all farm-linked receipts are wholly exempt, and do not apply a guessed tax-rate formula. For a mixed or disputed receipt, use the relevant statutory provisions and rules or obtain professional advice.

Do I need to report exempt agricultural income?
Yes, when the return and your facts require the disclosure. Schedule EI exists to capture exempt income and other income not included in total income. Omitting eligible agricultural income can make the return inconsistent with your records and with the form’s questions, even though the amount is not entered as ordinary taxable income.
Reporting it does not mean adding the same amount again under salary, business, house property, capital gains, or other sources. Enter it once in the appropriate Schedule EI fields, and enter genuinely non-agricultural income once in its own schedule.
Worked filing patterns
Salary plus agricultural income of ₹4,000
First check whether you are an eligible resident individual and satisfy every ITR-1 condition. Because the agricultural amount does not exceed ₹5,000, the agricultural-income threshold alone does not disqualify ITR-1. If ITR-1 is otherwise available, disclose the ₹4,000 in Schedule EI and salary in the salary schedule. If any other fact excludes ITR-1, select the form indicated by that fact instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSalary plus agricultural income above ₹5,000, with no business income
Do not select ITR-1 for AY 2026–27 on the assumption that the farm amount is exempt. The amount above ₹5,000 is a form-eligibility exclusion. An individual or HUF without income chargeable under the business or profession head may be able to use ITR-2, subject to its complete conditions. Enter the agricultural amount in Schedule EI and salary in the salary schedule.
Salary, agricultural income, and a consulting practice
Because consulting income is chargeable under the business or profession head, ITR-2 is not the form for this fact pattern. Check the applicable business-income return form, disclose agricultural income in Schedule EI, salary in the salary schedule, and consulting figures in the business or profession schedule.
Agricultural calculation produces a loss
Complete the gross-receipts and agricultural-expenditure fields, apply any eligible prior-year agricultural loss, and follow the form’s instruction to enter net agricultural income as nil when the calculation produces a loss. Do not report a negative net agricultural-income figure in Schedule EI or move that loss into salary or another income-head schedule.
Net agricultural income exceeds ₹5 lakh
Complete the normal Schedule EI calculation and then provide the district, PIN code, acreage, ownership or lease status, and irrigated or rain-fed status for each agricultural land requested by the form. This land-detail requirement applies independently of the ₹5,000 ITR-1 threshold.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Putting all income in Schedule EI: Move salary, house-property income, capital gains, business or profession income, and other sources to their corresponding schedules.
- Treating ₹5,000 as a taxability limit: It is the AY 2026–27 ITR-1 eligibility threshold, not a statement that agricultural income above it automatically becomes taxable.
- Using ITR-2 despite business income: ITR-2 excludes income chargeable under the business or profession head. Reassess the form before filing.
- Confusing the two thresholds: ₹5,000 concerns ITR-1 eligibility; ₹5 lakh concerns land particulars in Schedule EI.
- Entering a negative net agricultural amount: The notified form says to enter nil when the calculation produces a loss.
- Ignoring earlier agricultural losses: Check the Schedule EI line covering unabsorbed agricultural losses from the previous eight assessment years and retain support for the amount claimed.
- Assuming every farm-linked receipt is fully exempt: Review whether Rules 7A, 7B, or 8 require an allocated agricultural portion and another treatment.
- Using an outdated utility: Confirm that the downloaded return utility is the AY 2026–27 version and review the Department’s current release information before submission.
- Failing to preserve a calculation trail: Keep receipts, expense evidence, prior returns, loss workings, land records, and the allocation analysis used to complete Schedule EI.
Final pre-submission checklist
- Confirm that the selected return is for AY 2026–27 and matches your taxpayer type and residential status.
- List each receipt by income head before entering figures.
- Complete Schedule EI for agricultural income, including receipts, expenditure, eligible previous-eight-year loss, any specified-rule allocation, and net income.
- Enter nil for net agricultural income when the Schedule EI calculation produces a loss.
- If net agricultural income exceeds ₹5 lakh, add the requested particulars for every agricultural land.
- Enter salary, house-property income, capital gains, business or profession income, and other sources in their own schedules.
- Recheck the ₹5,000 ITR-1 exclusion and the separate ₹5 lakh land-detail trigger.
- If business or profession income, mixed receipts, foreign elements, or another exclusion is present, verify the applicable form instead of relying on ITR-1 or ITR-2 by assumption.
- Validate the completed return in the current AY 2026–27 utility and retain the supporting records and calculation worksheets.
