How to Report a Wrong UPI Transfer and Request a Refund (2026 Guide)

If you sent UPI money to the wrong person, open the payment app’s transaction history immediately, record the transaction details, raise the transaction-specific grievance, and contact the bank linked to the payer account. A successful transfer generally cannot be stopped through UPI, and an automatic refund is not guaranteed. Your recovery request therefore depends on the transaction status, the bank’s handling of the complaint, and any escalation available under the current rules.

First, identify what happened to the payment

Do not begin by assuming that every debit has the same remedy. Open the UPI app and check the exact status shown for the transaction. Record whether it is marked successful, pending or failed. Also note the date and time, amount, UPI transaction reference or RRN, and the recipient information displayed in the receipt.

Transaction state What it means for your next step What the official guidance establishes
Successful transfer to an unintended recipient Raise a complaint in the app if that option is available and contact the bank linked to your account immediately. Ask for the bank’s process for seeking recovery. NPCI’s UPI FAQ says an initiated payment cannot be stopped. NPCI’s published UPI Help guidance excludes successful person-to-person transactions from its supported complaint types, so no automatic refund is established.
Pending debit Use the transaction-help flow and ask the bank to confirm the final status. Keep checking the entry rather than sending the payment again. NPCI describes pending or failed cases in its reversal or credit-back guidance. That guidance does not turn a completed, misdirected payment into a guaranteed refund.
Failed or declined debit Confirm whether the amount was actually debited and retain the failed transaction record. If money was debited, report the debit through the app and bank. NPCI describes refund or reversal handling for failed transactions, subject to the transaction and bank process.

The distinction matters because a successful payment to the wrong person is an authorised mistake from the payer’s perspective, while a failed or pending debit is primarily a status or reversal problem. Use the label shown by your app when you complain; do not describe a payment as “fraud” merely because you entered the wrong recipient.

What to do in the first few minutes

1. Stop making additional transfers

Do not send a second payment to the intended recipient until you know what happened to the first one. A duplicate payment can create a separate dispute and make the account history harder to explain.

2. Preserve the receipt and transaction record

Save the app receipt or take a screenshot of the history entry before it changes. Keep the transaction date, amount, reference/RRN, payer account or bank shown, recipient name or identifier shown, and the exact status. These are the details you will need in both the in-app complaint and the bank request. Do not edit the screenshot or crop out the reference number.

3. Raise the transaction-level complaint

In most UPI apps, the path is similar even though labels differ:

  1. Open History, Activity or Transactions.
  2. Select the incorrect transfer.
  3. Tap Help, Report issue, Raise grievance or the equivalent transaction-support button.
  4. Choose the closest available reason, such as an incorrect recipient or a debit-status problem.
  5. Enter the requested transaction details and submit the complaint.
  6. Save the complaint or ticket reference and use the app’s status-check feature.

NPCI says a UPI grievance or transaction-status request can be raised or checked through the UPI app of a participating bank. The current labels and available categories can change, so follow the options actually displayed in your app rather than relying on an old screenshot or a generic menu name.

Contact the bank linked to the payer account

The app complaint should not be your only report for a successful wrong-recipient transfer. Contact the bank that holds the account from which the UPI debit was made, using the bank’s official support channel. Tell the bank clearly that you authorised a UPI payment but sent it to an unintended recipient, and request the bank’s procedure for seeking recovery.

Information to include

  • Your name and the account or UPI profile used for the payment.
  • Transaction date and approximate time.
  • Amount and currency shown in the transaction.
  • UPI transaction reference or RRN.
  • Recipient name, UPI identifier or account detail displayed by the app.
  • The app’s current status: successful, pending or failed.
  • The in-app complaint number, if one was issued.
  • A copy or screenshot of the receipt, if the bank’s channel accepts attachments.

A precise description you can use

I am reporting a UPI transfer sent to an unintended recipient. Transaction date: [date]. Amount: [amount]. UPI reference/RRN: [reference]. The app shows: [successful/pending/failed]. Recipient details displayed: [details]. In-app complaint number: [number, if available]. Please record this complaint and tell me the process for seeking recovery or reversal.

Ask for the bank’s complaint or service-request number and retain it with the app reference. The official material does not establish that every bank must recover every successful mistaken transfer, nor does it provide a universal recovery deadline. The bank’s response may therefore be a request for more information, an explanation of the available process, or a decision that does not return the money. Do not describe a reversal as guaranteed when you submit the request.

Why a successful wrong transfer cannot simply be stopped

NPCI’s UPI FAQ answers the question “Can I put a stop payment request for funds transferred by UPI?” with: “No, once the payment is initiated, it cannot be stopped.” That statement addresses stopping an initiated payment; it is not a promise that a failed or pending debit will never reverse. NPCI’s published guidance discusses money returning to the payer in failed, declined or certain pending situations, but that language should not be extended to a completed payment that reached an unintended person.

NPCI’s UPI Help guidance dated July 2023 says its complaint flow supports debit transactions except successful person-to-person transactions. It also describes complaints after five minutes and credit-back for wrong debits in pending or failed cases. Because that document is dated, check the current options in your app and with your bank. Its exclusion means you should not present the UPI Help flow as an automatic refund mechanism for a successful person-to-person mistake.

Use NPCI’s complaint portal when an additional registration is useful

You can register a UPI complaint through the NPCI complaint portal when the portal’s categories fit your issue. Provide the transaction information exactly as shown in the app and keep the portal reference. NPCI explains that it makes the complaint available to the relevant member or members where the complainant holds the account, and that those members are responsible for resolving it.

That division of responsibility is important: NPCI facilitates registration and routing; an NPCI status page is not itself a refund decision. Continue dealing with the bank linked to the debit and keep both references together. If the portal does not offer a category for a successful person-to-person mistake, use the bank’s own complaint channel and do not choose an inaccurate category merely to force a submission.

When the transfer was not authorised

A wrong-recipient transfer is usually an authorised payment entered incorrectly. An unauthorised or fraudulent transaction is different: someone else used your account, device, credentials or payment authorisation without your permission. State which situation applies.

For an unauthorised or fraudulent transaction

Report it to the bank immediately through the bank’s official support channel and describe why you did not authorise it. NPCI’s complaint portal directs unauthorised or fraudulent cases to the respective bank for redressal. Give the bank the transaction reference, date, amount and any security or account details it requests. Preserve messages, alerts and the app record. Do not recast an intentional payment to the wrong person as fraud simply because you regret the recipient choice; inaccurate wording can send the complaint into the wrong process.

For an authorised mistake

Say that you initiated and authorised the payment but selected or entered the wrong recipient. Request recovery assistance and ask what information or consent the bank needs. The official sources reviewed here do not establish a universal legal entitlement to recover every completed mistaken transfer or a guaranteed timetable, so keep your request factual and avoid promising the recipient that a refund will occur.

Escalate if the bank does not resolve the complaint

First give the bank a complete complaint and allow its complaint process to operate. Keep the date you complained, the bank’s reference, every response, and any documents you supplied. If the bank rejects the complaint wholly or partly, gives an unsatisfactory response, or does not respond within 30 days, you may be able to approach the RBI Ombudsman, subject to the scheme’s eligibility conditions.

The applicable framework for new complaints is the Reserve Bank–Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026, which the Reserve Bank of India’s FAQ says came into force on July 1, 2026 and replaced the 2021 scheme for new complaints. The 30-day point is measured from your complaint to the regulated entity, such as the bank; it is not a promise that a refund will be decided within 30 days.

Prepare before using the Ombudsman route

  • Use the bank’s complaint or grievance channel first.
  • Keep the bank complaint number and the date submitted.
  • Save the bank’s final response, if any, or evidence that no response arrived.
  • Keep the UPI receipt, reference/RRN, amount, recipient details and in-app complaint number.
  • Read the live RBI instructions and scheme terms to confirm eligibility and the correct filing method before submitting.

The RBI FAQ establishes the conditions for considering an Ombudsman approach, but the sources here do not establish every filing deadline, form field or eligibility exception. Check the live RBI information at the time you file rather than relying on an old guide.

Keep a single evidence log

A simple chronology prevents conflicting accounts when the app, bank and any later escalation each ask for the same facts. Record:

  • When you contacted the bank, which channel you used and the bank’s complaint number.
  • Every response, request for documents and status change.
  • When you registered an NPCI portal complaint, if you used it.

Use the same transaction reference and description in every channel. Avoid opening many duplicate complaints unless the bank instructs you to do so; duplicate records can make status tracking less clear.

Common mistakes that weaken a refund request

  • Waiting to report: a delay does not create a stop-payment right and can make the case harder to investigate.
  • Using the wrong category: an authorised data-entry mistake is not automatically an unauthorised transaction.
  • Leaving out the RRN: the reference is the most useful way for the bank or member institution to locate the payment.
  • Assuming a pending label means the money is gone: wait for the final status while reporting the debit if funds were taken.
  • Assuming an app ticket equals a refund: a ticket records a complaint; it does not decide recovery.
  • Trusting an old menu or promise: the July 2023 UPI Help wording and individual app flows may change, so verify the current screen and bank instructions.
  • Promising a deadline or outcome to the recipient: neither the NPCI material nor the RBI FAQ establishes a universal recovery time for a successful mistaken transfer.

A practical decision path

  1. Status is successful and the recipient is wrong: save the receipt, raise the transaction grievance if available, and contact the payer bank with the RRN and recipient details. Treat recovery as a request, not an automatic reversal.
  2. Status is pending: report the transaction, ask the bank to confirm the final state, and monitor the entry. Do not send a duplicate payment while the status is unresolved.
  3. Status is failed but the account was debited: submit the failed-debit complaint with the reference and ask the bank to trace the reversal or credit-back.
  4. You did not authorise the payment: report it to the bank as unauthorised or fraudulent immediately and preserve all alerts and records.
  5. The bank rejects, mishandles or ignores the complaint: after the applicable 30-day condition or an earlier rejection or unsatisfactory response, check whether the RBI Ombudsman route is available under the 2026 scheme.

What a realistic outcome looks like

For a pending or failed debit, the official NPCI material describes reversal or credit-back pathways, although the exact result depends on the transaction and bank handling. For a successful person-to-person payment sent to the wrong recipient, NPCI says the initiated payment cannot be stopped and its UPI Help guidance excludes that successful category. The appropriate objective is therefore to create a complete, prompt, traceable recovery request through the app and bank, then use the available escalation route if the bank’s handling meets the RBI scheme’s conditions.

Keep the evidence log until the bank gives a final response or any Ombudsman process is complete. A complaint reference proves that you reported the transaction; it does not by itself prove that the money will be returned.
