How to Report a Suspicious Social Security Direct Deposit or Payment Message

Report a suspicious message about your Social Security payment or direct-deposit information to the Social Security Administration Office of the Inspector General (SSA OIG) through its official “Report Scams” form. Do not reply, click links, open attachments, or use phone numbers and websites included in the message. If you believe your deposit details were actually changed, contact Social Security directly at 1-800-772-1213 as soon as possible, then contact your bank or prepaid-card provider if an account or funds may be at risk.

Use the right reporting route for the problem

A message can be an attempted scam even when no money has been lost. The first report for a text, email, call, letter, social-media message, or website impersonating Social Security belongs with SSA OIG. Its scam-report form specifically includes claims that there is a problem with your Social Security, “my Social Security,” or direct-deposit information.

What happened First action Why
You received a suspicious payment or direct-deposit message, but no change or loss is confirmed File an SSA OIG scam report through the official OIG website OIG collects allegations involving Social Security programs and operations, including impersonation and false direct-deposit claims.
You think someone changed your Social Security deposit details without permission Call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 promptly SSA must address the payment record itself; an OIG report does not substitute for correcting an account.
You supplied bank information, sent money, or see unauthorized account activity Contact the financial institution immediately and report the scam to SSA OIG Your bank, credit union, card issuer, or payment provider may be able to block transactions or secure the account.
You exposed personal or online-account information Follow the additional FTC and Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) reporting guidance referenced by OIG Those channels address broader identity, financial, and internet-enabled fraud.

Always reach an agency through an address you locate independently on its official website. Do not rely on a link, QR code, email address, caller-ID number, or callback instruction supplied by the suspicious communication.

The Social Security Administration says, “If you receive an unexpected call, text message, email, letter, or message on social media, asking for personal information or payment, be skeptical.” That warning applies even when the message uses an official-looking seal, a familiar name, or details that appear to identify your benefit.

What to do before you report the message

Preserve useful evidence without continuing the conversation. The Social Security Administration advises skepticism when an unexpected call, text, email, letter, or social-media message asks for personal information or payment.

  • Do not reply or call back through the message.
  • Do not click a link, scan a QR code, download an attachment, or open a file you did not expect.
  • Do not provide your Social Security number, “my Social Security” login, date of birth, bank-routing or account number, card number, password, security code, or identity documents in response.
  • Do not send gift cards, cash, a wire transfer, internet currency, or a prepaid debit card.
  • Save the original text, email, letter, voicemail, social-media post, or website address if doing so is safe. Take screenshots that show the sender, date, phone number or address, claimed agency, payment demand, and any account details.
  • Do not forward a malicious attachment or click a link merely to collect evidence. A screenshot or safely saved message is generally enough to describe the attempt.

If the message is still open in an email or social-media account, report it using that service’s built-in abuse or phishing function only after you have captured the information needed for the OIG report. Blocking the sender can prevent additional contact, but blocking alone does not notify Social Security.

How to file an SSA OIG scam report

Open the OIG “Report Scams” form by navigating to the official Social Security OIG domain yourself. The form is for reporting an alleged scam; submitting it does not promise that OIG will open an individual investigation, recover money, or correct a payment record.

  1. Identify the event. Enter the date the scam first occurred. If there were several contacts, use the first date and explain the later contacts in the description.
  2. Explain what the sender claimed. State whether the person or message mentioned Social Security benefits, your Social Security number, “my Social Security,” direct-deposit information, a payment problem, a prize, or another government service.
  3. Describe the contact method. Say whether it was a telephone call, email, text, social-media message, website, U.S. mail, or another method. Include the displayed sender name, telephone number, email address, mailing address, username, or website address exactly as shown.
  4. Describe the request and threat. Record what you were told to do, such as click a link, confirm banking details, move a deposit, pay a fee, or provide a verification code. Include threats of arrest or legal action, promises of a benefit increase, or claims that help was available only after payment.
  5. Answer the payment questions. The form asks whether you suffered a financial loss, the amount of that loss, and whether the scammer requested payment. If no money was sent, say so; an attempted scam is still reportable.
  6. Provide identifying and contact details. Complete the requested reporter information accurately so OIG can identify the source of the allegation and contact you if needed. The form also asks whether you receive a monthly Social Security Administration payment.
  7. Review before submitting. Check dates, amounts, account descriptions, and contact details. Remove passwords, one-time codes, and unnecessary full account numbers from a narrative unless the form specifically requires information and you are certain you are on the official OIG site.
  8. Save the confirmation. Keep any confirmation number or copy of the submission with your screenshots. Do not assume that the confirmation means funds will be returned or that an investigator will contact you.

When a message says your direct deposit is at risk

A payment-warning message often tries to make a recipient act before checking the account independently. It may say that a deposit is suspended, that banking information must be “verified,” or that a payment will be lost unless a fee is paid. Treat the message as untrusted until you verify the situation through Social Security’s independently located contact information.

If you suspect an unauthorized change to your deposit instructions, call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213. Tell the representative that you believe your benefit direct-deposit details may have been changed without permission. Ask what steps are needed to verify the payment record and protect future payments. Do not wait for an OIG response before making that call.

An OIG alert published September 9, 2026, warned about prize offers that ask people to redirect a Social Security deposit to another account or a prepaid debit card. OIG states that no legitimate contest or prize requires a person to redirect a federal benefit payment. A prize claim involving a requested deposit change should therefore be reported, and any suspected change should be raised directly with SSA.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you clicked, shared information, or sent money

Change your response as soon as you realize the contact may be fraudulent. Stop communicating with the sender; do not negotiate, warn the scammer, or send another payment to “unlock” a refund.

If you shared bank or card details

  • Call the bank, credit union, card issuer, or prepaid-card provider using the number on a statement, card, or independently verified official website.
  • Explain exactly what information was exposed and when. Ask whether the account, card, direct-deposit instruction, or online access should be frozen, replaced, or monitored.
  • Review recent and pending transactions. Report transactions you did not authorize and follow the institution’s instructions for disputes.
  • Change online-banking and email passwords from a trusted device, especially if a password or verification code was disclosed. Do not reuse a password that was exposed.

If you sent money

Contact the payment provider immediately. A wire transfer, gift-card purchase, prepaid-card load, cash delivery, or internet-currency transfer may have different cancellation rules, and speed matters. Keep receipts, transaction identifiers, card numbers, wallet addresses, and the scammer’s instructions for the provider and your reports.

If you entered credentials or installed software

Use a trusted device to secure the affected email, “my Social Security,” banking, and other accounts. Sign out other sessions where the service permits it, replace compromised passwords, and enable multifactor authentication. If you installed an unsolicited program or gave remote access, disconnect the device from the internet and obtain assistance from a qualified technician before using it for sensitive transactions.

Make the additional reports

SSA OIG’s alert directs people with compromised personal or financial information to use the appropriate Federal Trade Commission and Internet Crime Complaint Center reporting guidance as well. Reach those services through their official websites, not through links in the suspicious message. These reports complement an SSA OIG report; they do not replace contacting the financial institution or Social Security.

How to recognize a Social Security payment scam

Scammers can use convincing logos, copied government language, spoofed caller ID, and personal details gathered elsewhere. The communication method does not make a message legitimate. OIG says these scams can arrive by telephone, email, text, social media, websites, or U.S. mail.

Common pressure tactics

  • Impersonation: The sender claims to be from SSA or another government office and asks you to “confirm” information.
  • Threats: The sender says you will be arrested, sued, lose benefits, or face legal action unless you pay or act immediately.
  • Fee-for-help claims: The sender promises a benefit increase, faster assistance, or a special payment after you pay a fee.
  • Unusual payment demands: The sender requests gift cards, cash, a wire transfer, internet currency, or a prepaid debit card.
  • Deposit redirection: A supposed prize, promotion, or “verification” process asks you to move a federal benefit payment to a different account or prepaid card.
  • Secrecy and urgency: You are told not to check with SSA, your bank, family, or another official source before acting.

A legitimate-looking message can still be fraudulent. Verify the claim independently rather than trying to prove the sender wrong through the contact details provided.

What information makes the report useful

A clear chronology helps OIG understand the allegation. Write the facts in your own words and distinguish what you observed from what the sender claimed.

  • The first date and approximate times of contact.
  • The communication channel and every sender identifier displayed.
  • The exact claim about your benefit, Social Security number, “my Social Security,” or direct deposit.
  • Any demand, promised reward, threat, deadline, or instruction to redirect funds.
  • Whether you clicked, replied, supplied information, installed software, paid, or contacted a bank.
  • The amount and type of any loss, plus whether a transaction is pending.
  • Copies or screenshots of messages, letters, voicemails, receipts, and website addresses that can be safely retained.

Do not embellish or guess. If you do not know whether the sender obtained your information from SSA, state that the sender claimed to have it. If there was no loss, report that plainly.

Privacy and what happens after submission

The OIG form requests identifying and contact information, along with details about whether you receive a monthly SSA payment. OIG says reports may be used to investigate alleged fraud, waste, abuse, and misconduct connected with SSA programs and operations. Give accurate information through the official form, but do not send extra passwords, one-time authentication codes, or complete banking credentials in an open narrative.

A submitted report is not a guarantee of an investigation, a personal response, a payment correction, or recovery of money. Continue working directly with SSA about a benefit record and with your financial institution about account or transaction security. Keep your confirmation and evidence in case another agency or institution asks for them.

Which report should come first?

Use the nature of the harm to set the order. An unconfirmed impersonation attempt belongs with SSA OIG first because it concerns SSA programs and operations. A suspected change to the payment record requires a prompt call to SSA, whether or not you also file an OIG report. Exposed banking details or an unauthorized transaction require the bank, card issuer, credit union, or payment provider because that institution controls the account and may have time-sensitive protective or dispute procedures.

If the contact exposed broader identity information or an online account, add the FTC and IC3 routes identified in OIG guidance. These reports serve different purposes: they document identity and internet-enabled fraud, while SSA addresses the benefit record and your financial institution addresses the account or transaction. Filing one report does not automatically forward the matter to every other agency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using the message’s callback number: A scammer can answer a “verification” call. Locate SSA and OIG contact information independently.
  • Reporting only to the text or email service: Marking a message as spam may stop delivery but does not report a Social Security impersonation to OIG.
  • Waiting for proof of loss: OIG accepts reports of attempted scams. You do not need to lose money before reporting.
  • Assuming a report fixes direct deposit: Contact SSA directly when payment details may have changed.
  • Sending more information to correct an error: A second request for your SSN, bank details, or a code can be part of the same scam.
  • Deleting the only evidence: Save screenshots and transaction records before blocking the sender or closing the message.

A quick action checklist

  1. Stop responding and do not click, call, pay, or disclose information through the message.
  2. Save the sender details, dates, wording, payment demand, and screenshots.
  3. File the Social Security scam report through the official SSA OIG “Report Scams” form.
  4. Call SSA at 1-800-772-1213 if an unauthorized direct-deposit change may have occurred.
  5. Call your bank, credit union, card issuer, or prepaid-card provider if money or banking details are involved.
  6. Use the FTC and IC3 reporting routes recommended by OIG when personal or financial information was compromised.
  7. Secure affected accounts, monitor transactions, and retain confirmation numbers and receipts.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I report a suspicious Social Security direct-deposit message?

Use the official Social Security Administration Office of the Inspector General “Report Scams” form. Navigate to the OIG website yourself rather than using a link in the message. Describe what was claimed, how the sender contacted you, what was requested, when it happened, and whether money or personal information was involved.

What should I do if a text says my Social Security payment is at risk?

Do not reply, click, call the number provided, or disclose information. Save a screenshot and report the attempted scam to SSA OIG. If you think your deposit instructions were actually changed, call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 promptly; an OIG report does not correct the payment record.

Can I report a Social Security scam if I did not lose money?

Yes. The OIG form accepts reports of alleged and attempted scams. State that no money was sent or lost, and explain any request for payment, banking details, a login, a verification code, or a deposit redirection.

What if I gave the sender my bank information or sent money?

Stop communicating with the sender and contact your bank, credit union, card issuer, prepaid-card provider, or payment service immediately using independently verified contact details. Ask about securing the account and disputing unauthorized transactions. Also file the SSA OIG report and use the FTC or IC3 reporting guidance when personal or financial information was compromised.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What details does the SSA OIG form ask for?

It asks for the date the scam first occurred, what happened, whether the sender mentioned Social Security benefits, your Social Security number, “my Social Security,” or direct-deposit information, a short description, whether you suffered a financial loss and its amount, whether payment was requested, your identifying and contact details, and whether you receive a monthly SSA payment.

Will filing an OIG report get my money back or guarantee an investigation?

No. OIG says reports may be used to investigate alleged fraud, waste, abuse, and misconduct related to SSA programs and operations, but submission does not guarantee an individual investigation, a personal response, payment correction, or recovery. Continue working with SSA about benefits and with your financial institution about money or account security.

The Bottom Line

Do not engage with a suspicious Social Security payment message. Preserve the evidence and report it through the official SSA OIG “Report Scams” form. Call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 immediately if a direct-deposit change may be unauthorized, and contact your financial institution without delay if you shared details or money.
