Act quickly, but do not assume a report guarantees a refund. Ask your bank or card issuer whether it can stop or block future payments, contact your student-loan servicer through a trusted channel, secure any exposed Federal Student Aid (FSA) credentials, and file reports with the agencies that handle your type of complaint. A scam report creates an official record and may help investigators; it does not by itself cancel a legitimate loan or promise reimbursement.
This U.S.-focused guide explains what to do in order, which reporting channel fits each problem, how to document the fraud, and how to separate scam recovery from legitimate repayment help. If money is still scheduled to leave your account, treat the situation as urgent.

What to do in the first hour
- Call the bank, card issuer, or payment provider. Use the phone number on a statement or the institution’s official website, not a number supplied by the suspected scammer. Ask whether recurring or scheduled payments to the company can be canceled or blocked. Tell the representative the merchant name, amount, date, payment method, and whether additional debits are scheduled. Make the request immediately; a payment that has already settled may not be recoverable, and the outcome depends on the payment method and facts.
- Contact your student-loan servicer independently. Explain that a third party may have accessed your account or submitted changes. Ask the servicer to restrict disclosures to you, revoke any power of attorney or third-party authorization, and review the account for new repayment plans, deferments, forbearances, address changes, payment-account changes, or other submissions you did not approve. Ask when each disputed change was received and whether it was submitted online, by phone, or by a representative.
- Secure exposed credentials. If an FSA ID, servicer password, email account, or payment-account credential was disclosed, change it through the official service. Change the email password connected to the loan as well, enable multifactor authentication where available, and remove unfamiliar recovery addresses or forwarding rules. Do not give a replacement password or one-time code to anyone who calls. The Department of Education and its servicers will not ask for your FSA ID password.
- Preserve evidence before deleting anything. Save contracts, payment confirmations, emails, text messages, advertisements, caller IDs, website addresses, company names, phone numbers, and the dates and amounts of every transaction. Capture screenshots that show the full web address and keep the original files unchanged.
These steps limit additional loss while the institutions that control your money and loan account investigate. They are urgent requests, not guarantees that a completed payment will be reversed. If your bank cannot reach the suspected merchant, ask what internal fraud, recall, or dispute process applies to that payment type and record any response deadline it gives you.
Choose the reporting channel that matches the problem
Several agencies accept complaints, but they serve different purposes. Filing with the wrong office can delay a response, so use the route that corresponds to the conduct or benefit involved. You may need more than one report: one report can describe deceptive sales, another can address servicing, and a third can document identity theft.

CFPB guidance says agencies work to obtain a response to a complaint. That process is different from a court judgment or a refund decision, so continue working with your bank, card issuer, and servicer about the money and account itself. A complaint to one agency does not automatically forward the matter to every other agency.
How to report a student-loan relief scam
File the FTC and state reports
Describe what the company promised, what you paid, how it contacted you, and what access or documents it requested. Include the legal or trading name shown on your contract and any different name used in advertisements or phone calls. State whether the company claimed to be affiliated with the Department of Education, used a government-looking logo, promised immediate forgiveness, or told you to stop speaking with your servicer. Notify your state attorney general as well. These reports help create records and alert enforcement agencies; the official guidance does not promise that filing will recover your payment or erase a valid debt.
Notify the Department of Education and your servicer
CFPB advises borrowers to contact the Department of Education and their servicer after a student-loan scam. Tell the servicer exactly what happened and ask for written confirmation of any account review. If the scammer claimed to work for the government, provide the caller’s identifying details and copies of the message or contract. Ask whether any authorization remains active and how to submit a written revocation.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use the Education Department Feedback Center for federal-aid complaints
If the underlying issue is a federal financial-aid process rather than only deceptive sales, submit it through the Education Department’s Feedback Center. A complaint there is appropriate for problems with federal aid administration; it does not replace a bank payment dispute or an identity-theft report. Explain which federal program is involved and separate facts about the program from facts about the outside company that solicited you.
Report identity theft and protect your credit
If the scammer used your personal information to open an account, change a loan, or incur another debt, report the identity theft at IdentityTheft.gov. The FTC tool produces an Identity Theft Report and a recovery plan tailored to the facts you enter. Save the completed report, plan, and confirmation number in the same secure file as your payment records.

That plan can include contacting the nationwide credit-reporting companies about:
- Fraud alerts, which tell potential creditors to take additional steps to verify your identity.
- Security freezes, which restrict access to your credit file until you lift the freeze.
- Blocking or removing fraudulent debts from your credit reports when the required documentation supports the request.
Review your credit reports and bank statements for accounts or withdrawals you do not recognize. Check for unfamiliar addresses, inquiries, password-reset notices, or changes to contact information. Do not send a Social Security card, driver’s license image, or other sensitive document to an unverified caller who promises to fix the problem. Use only the submission instructions in the official recovery plan or on a verified institution’s website.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSecure the student-loan account
Revoke outside authority
Ask the servicer to remove every power of attorney, third-party authorization, or communication permission you did not knowingly grant. Request that future disclosures and account changes be limited to you until the matter is resolved. If you signed a document under pressure, ask the servicer how it records a revocation and whether it needs a dated written statement.
Check for unauthorized changes
Review the current balance, payment amount, due date, repayment plan, contact information, deferment or forbearance status, and payment history. Compare them with statements saved before the incident. Ask the servicer to identify when each disputed change was submitted and whether it was made online, by telephone, or through a representative. Do not assume that a lower payment or a temporary pause means the underlying account is corrected; obtain the status and effective date in writing.
Protect the email and payment accounts connected to the loan
Change the email password used for the servicer, enable multifactor authentication where available, and remove unfamiliar forwarding rules or recovery addresses. If the scammer received bank details, ask the bank whether a new account number or other protective measure is appropriate. Review automatic-payment instructions and cancel any authorization you did not approve. Use only contact details that you verify independently.

What evidence to collect and how to follow up
No single evidence packet is required for every complaint, but organized records make it easier for a bank, servicer, or agency to understand what happened. Create a dated timeline containing:
Recommended Free Tools
- The first contact and every later call, email, text, or meeting.
- The company name, salesperson’s name, phone numbers, email addresses, mailing addresses, and website addresses.
- Promises about forgiveness, credit-report deletion, lower payments, or government affiliation.
- Contracts, invoices, screenshots, payment receipts, canceled checks, card statements, and transaction IDs.
- Credentials, authorization forms, or identity documents you disclosed.
- Complaint confirmation numbers and the names or departments of people you contacted.
Keep original files unchanged and store copies in a secure location. When you communicate with an institution, state the date, amount, payment method, and specific action you want. Ask the servicer to confirm in writing what access or loan changes it found and what it did. Ask the bank or card issuer to document its decision on the stop-payment or block request. Keep notes of every conversation, including the representative’s name and any stated deadline.
If the payment already went through
Still contact the bank, card issuer, or payment provider immediately. Explain that the payment was induced by suspected fraud and ask what review, recall, or dispute process is available for that payment type. The ability to reverse a completed transaction is not guaranteed, and the official guidance does not establish one universal deadline or refund rule for every network and payment method.
Continue with the servicer and agency reports even if the bank cannot recover the money. A payment dispute addresses the transaction; an FTC, state, Education Department, CFPB, or identity-theft report addresses the conduct or account misuse. Keep each institution’s response and any stated deadline. Do not stop making undisputed loan payments solely because a complaint is pending; ask the servicer in writing about any payment you believe is unauthorized or incorrectly changed.
Separate scam reporting from legitimate loan repayment help
Reporting a scam does not automatically change the balance or payment status of the underlying loan. After securing the account, contact the federal servicer directly to confirm what you owe and discuss free options for which you may qualify, such as a different repayment plan, deferment, forbearance, or a cancellation benefit. Get any approved change and its effective date in writing. Eligibility and processing belong to the servicer or relevant program, not to the company that sold you assistance.

For a private student loan, relief depends on the lender’s policies and your contract. Ask the lender for available hardship or repayment options in writing. A nonprofit credit counselor may provide student-loan coaching and generally free budget analysis; verify the organization, all fees, the services included, and any partner program before agreeing to paid help. Counseling is repayment planning, not a guaranteed method for recovering scam money. Never pay a debt-relief company simply to contact a federal servicer or change a federal repayment plan; those actions are available directly through the servicer for free.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Warning signs that identify a student-loan scam
CFPB guidance identifies several recurring red flags:
- An upfront fee for a federal service that is available directly and free.
- A promise of immediate forgiveness or a guarantee that legally owed debt will disappear from your credit report.
- Pressure to sign a contract or authorize payment immediately.
- A request for your FSA ID, password, or other credentials.
- An instruction to stop communicating with your servicer or to let the company become the only contact.
- Claims of legitimacy based only on knowing your balance or other loan details.
Federal repayment-plan changes and contact with a federal servicer can be handled directly without paying a debt-relief company. CFPB states: “Despite what student loan debt relief companies may tell you, you NEVER have to pay someone else to contact your student loan servicer.”
How to verify a caller or company
- End the unexpected call and locate the servicer’s contact information from a prior statement or an official government account.
- Sign in by typing the verified address yourself rather than using a link in a text or email.
- Ask the servicer whether the caller, company, or authorization appears in your account records.
- Do not transfer money, share a one-time code, or sign a power of attorney while you are still verifying the identity.
- Compare every proposed change with the official account and request written terms before approving it.
A company’s knowledge of your balance is not proof that it is authorized. Treat requests for credentials or immediate payment as a reason to stop and verify. A professional-looking website, government-style language, or a caller ID that appears familiar can also be copied; independently sourced contact information is the meaningful check.

A practical follow-up schedule
Within the first day
- Submit the bank or card request to stop or block future payments.
- Contact the servicer, revoke unauthorized access, and secure passwords.
- Save evidence and record every confirmation number.
- Submit IdentityTheft.gov information if personal data was used, and place the credit protections recommended by the resulting plan.
After reports are submitted
- Check the loan account and bank statements for additional unauthorized activity.
- Respond promptly to questions from the bank, servicer, or complaint agency.
- Follow up in writing if an institution has not confirmed what it reviewed or changed.
- Keep separate records for each agency so a response about servicing is not mistaken for a decision about a payment refund.
Until the account is stable
- Watch your credit reports and email for new accounts, password resets, or address changes.
- Keep making undisputed loan payments unless the servicer confirms a different arrangement; a scam report alone does not suspend the loan.
- Keep all records in case a bank, agency, lender, or investigator requests them.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can reporting a student-loan scam cancel my loan or guarantee a refund?
No. Reports create records and may help agencies seek a response, but they do not automatically cancel a legitimate loan or guarantee reimbursement. Contact the bank about the payment and the servicer about the account separately.
What should I do if the scammer has my FSA ID password?
Change the credential through the official Federal Student Aid channel, secure the connected email account, and notify your servicer. Do not share a replacement password or one-time code; the Department of Education and servicers will not ask for your FSA ID password.
Which agency handles a private student-loan complaint?
The CFPB handles complaints about private student loans and federal-loan servicing. Report deceptive scam conduct to the FTC and your state attorney general as well; use the Education Department Feedback Center for a federal financial-aid process complaint.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Should I report identity theft separately?
Yes. If personal information was used to open accounts, change a loan, or incur debts, use IdentityTheft.gov. The FTC provides an Identity Theft Report and a tailored plan that may recommend fraud alerts, credit freezes, or blocking fraudulent debts.
Can a debt-relief company charge me to contact my federal servicer?
You do not have to pay for that service. You can contact the federal servicer directly and discuss repayment-plan changes or other eligible options for free.
What records should I keep?
Keep contracts, advertisements, messages, caller details, payment confirmations, account statements, authorization forms, screenshots, a dated timeline, and every complaint confirmation number. Ask the bank and servicer to document their decisions and account review in writing.
The Bottom Line
Stop future payments, secure your email and loan credentials, and contact the servicer through an independently verified channel. Report scam conduct to the FTC and your state attorney general; route federal-aid, servicing, GI Bill, military-benefit, and identity-theft issues to the agency that handles each one. Keep detailed records, continue addressing legitimate loan obligations, and treat any recovery as fact-specific rather than guaranteed.
