Use the route that matches the benefit you receive. People receiving Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability benefits, or Medicare, can generally change a U.S. mailing address in the My Profile tab of a personal my Social Security account. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients cannot currently make the change online; they should call Social Security or contact a local office. If you receive none of those benefits, SSI payments, or Medicare, Social Security says you do not need to report your move to the agency.
First, determine whether Social Security needs your new address
Moving does not automatically create an address-reporting duty for every person who has ever had contact with the Social Security Administration (SSA). The relevant question is whether you currently receive a covered payment or Medicare.

| Your situation | What to do | Available route |
|---|---|---|
| Social Security retirement benefits | Update the mailing address used for benefit communications. | Generally, my Social Security > My Profile |
| Social Security survivors benefits | Update the mailing address used for benefit communications. | Generally, my Social Security > My Profile |
| Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) | Update the mailing address used for benefit communications. | Generally, my Social Security > My Profile |
| Medicare enrollment | Update the U.S. mailing address associated with your record. | Generally, my Social Security > My Profile |
| Supplemental Security Income (SSI) | Report the move promptly; online address changes are not currently available. | Call SSA or contact a local Social Security office |
| None of Social Security benefits, SSI, or Medicare | SSA says you do not need to notify it merely because you moved. | No SSA address report required on that basis |
These categories are about the benefit or coverage you receive now. If you are unsure whether a payment is retirement, survivors, disability, or SSI, check a recent benefit notice or contact SSA before choosing a route. Do not assume that a pending application, representative-payee arrangement, or another contact with the agency has the same online eligibility as an active benefit recipient; the available guidance does not establish that every applicant or representative can use the online function.
SSA’s FAQ states: “If you do not receive Social Security benefits, SSI payments, or Medicare, you do not need to change your address with us.” That statement, dated September 20, 2024, is why a universal “everyone must update Social Security after moving” rule is incorrect.

How to change an address online for Social Security or Medicare
For eligible Social Security and Medicare recipients, the usual self-service path is the personal my Social Security account. Have the new mailing information ready before you begin, and use the account belonging to the person whose record is changing.
- Sign in to your personal my Social Security account. Use the account you normally use to view your Social Security information. If you cannot access it, use SSA’s account-recovery options or switch to phone or local-office assistance rather than waiting for a notice to be lost.
- Open the My Profile tab. The address function is located in the profile area, not in a postal-service account. Look for the mailing-address information associated with your record.
- Enter the new U.S. mailing address. Review apartment, unit, directional, and ZIP Code details carefully. A small formatting error can send a notice to the wrong delivery point.
- Choose when the change should take effect. SSA says the service lets you select the effective date. Choose a date that matches when mail should begin going to the new location, while still arranging postal forwarding for the transition.
- Review and submit the change. Confirm every line before final submission. Save or print the confirmation if the site provides one, and note the date you made the request.
- Check your notice preferences. After updating the address, review the account’s online-notice settings and Message Center so that available correspondence is visible to you while paper mail catches up.
U.S. citizens can also change an international address through the online profile service, according to SSA’s FAQ. That is different from changing a U.S. mailing address: enter the destination accurately and consider whether delivery timing, local postal practices, or a representative’s address affects how quickly you will receive notices.
How SSI recipients report a move
SSI has a separate process. SSA says SSI recipients cannot currently change an address online. Calling or contacting a local Social Security office is therefore the appropriate route.

The SSI FAQ lists 1-800-772-1213 for assistance and TTY 1-800-325-0778 for people who use TTY. The listed hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time. Phone schedules and service availability can change, so verify the current information on SSA’s official contact page before calling.
Contact a local office
If calling is impractical or your situation needs document review, use a local Social Security office. Ask how the office wants the address change submitted and whether an appointment or identity-verification step is required. Keep a record of the date, the office or representative contacted, and any confirmation number.

Report promptly and observe the SSI deadline
SSA instructs SSI recipients to report changes promptly and no later than the tenth day of the month after the month in which the change occurs. For example, a move occurring at any point in April should be reported by May 10. The agency’s 2026 reporting publication also describes the timing as 10 days after the end of the month. The practical choice is not to wait: report as soon as the new address is known.
Late or inaccurate SSI reporting can produce an underpayment, an overpayment that must be repaid, or possible penalties, according to SSA’s 2026 reporting-responsibilities publication. An address can affect whether you receive requests for information, eligibility notices, or other time-sensitive correspondence, so treat the report as a benefit-maintenance task rather than a casual mailing preference.

Postal forwarding is a separate protection
Submit a regular change-of-address request to the U.S. Postal Service if you want mail forwarded from the old address. SSA instructions on a disability-benefit application form advise filing that postal notice to avoid delays in receiving checks.
Forwarding does not update SSA’s records. It is a delivery measure that can bridge the period between moving and the agency processing your new information. You should still report the address to SSA through the correct benefit-specific route.
Use both steps when appropriate
- Report the new address to SSA through my Social Security, by phone, or through a local office, depending on your benefit.
- Arrange postal forwarding separately so mail sent to the old address has a chance to reach you.
- Tell important senders other than SSA—such as a pension administrator, insurer, bank, or state benefits agency—about the move under their own procedures.
- Keep access to the former mailbox only if it is lawful and safe; do not rely on forwarding as a permanent substitute for correcting the record.
Make SSA notices harder to miss
Changing the address is only one part of staying reachable. SSA provides a secure Message Center and lets users change preferences for notices that are available online. Not every notice is necessarily offered there, so online delivery should supplement—not replace—an accurate mailing address.

Review the Message Center
Sign in periodically after the move and open the secure Message Center. Check for newly posted notices, read any instructions and deadlines, and save copies for your records. If an online notice asks you to contact SSA, use the contact information in that notice or the current official contact channels.
Understand the change-of-address notice
SSA lists an online change-of-address notice that tells a beneficiary or representative payee to contact the agency if they did not report the change. If you receive that notice unexpectedly, treat it as a possible security or record problem: contact SSA promptly and explain that you did not authorize the update.
Keep more than one reminder
- Enable available email or text alerts for account activity, while recognizing that an alert is not the notice itself.
- Check the account during the first several weeks after a move, especially if a benefit review, overpayment matter, disability action, or Medicare issue is pending.
- Tell a trusted representative or representative payee how to reach you if they manage correspondence.
- Store confirmation details and copies of notices in a secure folder, with the date each item was received.
What to do when a notice is missing, late, or confusing
SSA notices explain decisions, rights and responsibilities, actions you must take, and how to contact the agency. A missing letter can therefore mean a missed deadline, not merely an inconvenience.
If mail has not arrived
- Check the new address you submitted, including unit number and ZIP Code.
- Confirm that postal forwarding was filed separately and that the forwarding period has not ended.
- Sign in to the Message Center to look for an available online copy.
- Contact SSA and explain the move, the date you reported it, and the notice you expected. Ask whether a deadline is running and what action is required.
- Write down the representative’s name or identification information, the date and time, and any follow-up instructions.
If a notice is confusing
Do not ignore it or guess at the required action. Read the sections describing the decision, your rights, the deadline, and the contact method. Then contact SSA if the explanation is unclear. If you misplaced the notice, say so and ask whether it can be reissued or explained by phone. Keep the envelope or electronic timestamp when available; it can help establish when the notice reached you.
If you suspect an unauthorized address change
Contact SSA immediately if the online change-of-address notice says a change was reported but you did not make it. Ask the agency to review the record and tell you what identity-verification or protective steps are required. Change the password for your online account if you suspect someone accessed it, and do not share login credentials with callers or unsolicited contacts.

Common address-change mistakes
Trying to update the Social Security card
A Social Security card itself does not need an address update. The relevant change concerns the mailing address used for benefit or Medicare communications and, for SSI, the reporting obligation. You do not need a replacement card merely because you moved.
Using the wrong online route for SSI
SSI recipients should not keep searching the online profile for a function SSA says is unavailable. Call SSA or contact a local office, and report the move within the required timeframe.
Assuming forwarding changes the SSA record
A postal request redirects eligible mail; it does not tell SSA that your official address changed. Complete the agency report as well.
Assuming every former applicant can edit an address online
The online guidance specifically covers eligible Social Security and Medicare recipients. It does not establish that every person with a pending claim, a representative, or another type of SSA record can use the same function. If your account does not show the option, contact SSA rather than entering an unrelated address or abandoning the update.

Waiting until a payment or notice is lost
Prompt reporting gives SSA and the postal service time to process the change before the next letter or review. It also gives you a dated record if a notice later appears to have been sent to the wrong place.

Changing only one household member’s record
Each beneficiary’s record may require its own update. Check whether a spouse, dependent, survivor, or representative payee receives separate correspondence and confirm the correct address for each applicable record.
A practical move-day checklist
- Identify whether each person in the household receives retirement, survivors, disability, SSI, or Medicare benefits.
- For eligible Social Security or Medicare recipients, sign in to my Social Security and use My Profile.
- For SSI recipients, call 1-800-772-1213, use TTY 1-800-325-0778, or contact a local office; report by the tenth day of the following month at the latest.
- Submit a separate postal forwarding request if mail should be redirected from the old address.
- Review Message Center and online-notice preferences.
- Save confirmation numbers, screenshots, letters, and the dates of every contact.
- Check for notices during the weeks after the move and respond before any stated deadline.
- Contact SSA if a notice is missing, unclear, or shows an address change you did not request.
Address changes outside the standard cases
Moving outside the United States
The online service allows U.S. citizens to change an international address, according to SSA’s FAQ. Because international delivery and benefit rules can involve additional circumstances, enter the complete destination and contact SSA if the account will not accept it or if you are uncertain which address should be used.
Representatives and representative payees
A beneficiary’s address and a representative payee’s address are not automatically interchangeable. If you are a payee or authorized representative, ask SSA which record must be changed and whether you can complete the action online. The agency’s change-of-address notice may instruct a beneficiary or representative payee to contact SSA when a reported change was not authorized.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Direct deposit is a different update
Changing an address does not change bank-account information. If you also need to change direct deposit, follow SSA’s separate instructions for that request and verify the account details independently. Do not assume that completing one update completes the other.
How to decide which action you need
| Question | If yes | If no |
|---|---|---|
| Do you receive Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability benefits, or Medicare? | Use my Social Security > My Profile to change a U.S. mailing address, if the account offers the function. | Go to the next question. |
| Do you receive SSI? | Call SSA or contact a local office; report promptly and no later than the tenth day of the following month. | Go to the next question. |
| Do you receive none of Social Security, SSI, or Medicare? | No SSA move report is required merely because you changed residence. | Check whether another person or benefit record in your household needs updating. |
| Do you want old mail redirected? | File a separate postal forwarding request. | Still make the SSA update when your benefit category requires it. |
| Did a notice go missing or appear unauthorized? | Check Message Center and contact SSA promptly. | Keep confirmation records and monitor notices after the move. |
The safest sequence for a covered beneficiary is therefore: identify the benefit, update SSA through the matching channel, arrange postal forwarding separately, and monitor both physical and secure online correspondence. That sequence addresses the record itself and the practical risk that a letter sent during the transition will not reach you.
