Losing the plastic card does not automatically mean your Social Security number has been stolen. If you know your number, you may not need a replacement because employers, banks, agencies and other organizations generally need the number, not the card. If you do need a new card, use the Social Security Administration (SSA) process: its Social Security number and card page determines whether you can apply online through a personal my Social Security account or must complete the request with an SSA office or card center. Replacement cards are free.
If you have signs that somebody is using the number, treat that as a separate identity-theft problem. Report it through the Federal Trade Commission’s IdentityTheft.gov process, consider a credit freeze or fraud alert, check your credit and financial accounts, review your Social Security earnings record, and contact the IRS about suspected tax misuse.

First decide whether a replacement card is necessary
SSA’s own FAQ puts the decision plainly: “If you lost your card, you may not need a replacement.” A missing card is evidence that a piece of identification is gone; it is not, by itself, proof that someone has obtained or used your number.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMany organizations ask for an SSN to complete a form, verify an account or report wages. In those situations, knowing the number is usually enough. Before replacing the card, ask the organization exactly what it needs and whether a secure alternative document or electronic verification is accepted. Do not send a photograph of the card merely because a caller, text message or email asks for one.

If you do request a replacement, plan to store it securely rather than carrying it as everyday identification. SSA advises, “Don’t Carry Your Card Daily: Keep your Social Security card in a safe place. Only bring it with you when absolutely necessary.”
Questions to ask when someone requests your SSN
- Why is the number required, and is the request legally or operationally necessary?
- How will the organization protect, store and dispose of it?
- Can you provide the number through an authenticated portal instead of by phone, email or an unencrypted form?
- What happens if you decline or provide another approved identifier?
Unsolicited requests deserve extra caution. A legitimate employer, lender or agency should be able to explain the purpose and secure submission method without pressuring you to act immediately.
Use SSA’s official screening process
Start at SSA’s official Social Security number and card page. Answer its questions before gathering documents or paying anyone. The page is the current decision point for whether your circumstances qualify for an online replacement, an online start followed by an appointment, or an application handled directly with SSA.
Do not substitute a paid intermediary, sponsored search result or social-media account for the government process. SSA says replacement cards are free, and the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) reiterated that warning in a March 10, 2026 scam alert: “The Social Security Administration (SSA) Office of the Inspector General (OIG) is reminding the public that they DO NOT have to pay for Social Security card-related services.”
Route 1: Submit through a personal my Social Security account
Most U.S. citizens can request a replacement through SSA’s website, but online eligibility depends on the applicant’s situation. If the screening page says you qualify, sign in to or create your personal my Social Security account and choose the replacement-card service. Follow the personalized prompts exactly; the system may ask questions that determine whether additional proof is needed.
An online request is convenient because you submit information from home and avoid an initial office visit. It is not a universal route. Citizenship status, the type of card requested, address information and other case details can change the available options.

- Cross-cut paper and credit card shredder cuts material into approximate 0.2 x 0.7 inches (5 x 18 mm) pieces; meets security level P-4 standards
- Shreds up to 8 sheets of 20-pound bond paper at a time; shreds credit cards (one at a time, but not suitable for metal credit cards), staples, and small paper clips
- 3 minute runtime and 30 minute cool down; if unit goes beyond max run time, it automatically shuts off to prevent overheating
- 4 mode control switch (auto/on, off, reverse, forward) and LED status indicators for power on, overheat and overload; easy to empty 3.7 gallon bin
- Quality tested: As part of Amazon Basics quality inspections, we test every shredder before shipping it, which means you may see some paper shreds from the testing
Route 2: Start online, then finish at an SSA office or card center
If SSA cannot complete the application online, it may let you begin electronically and schedule an appointment. You then take the required evidence to the designated office or card center to finish the request. The screening flow, rather than a third-party checklist, tells you which documents and appointment steps apply.
Route 3: Apply with Form SS-5
If you are applying without an online start, SSA says to complete Form SS-5 and bring it, along with the required evidence, to an SSA office or card center. The form and the document list are controlled by SSA; use the current version and follow the instructions for your citizenship and card circumstances.
Prepare the right documents
There is no single document bundle for every applicant. SSA says requirements vary according to citizenship and the type of card requested. When evidence is required, SSA generally requires original documents or copies certified by the issuing agency; ordinary photocopies and notarized copies may not satisfy the requirement.
Use the checklist generated by SSA for your specific case. Check each document’s expiration status, name consistency and issuing authority before your appointment. If your legal name has changed, the evidence for that change may be part of the personalized list.
- Follow the citizenship-specific instructions shown in the SSA flow.
- Bring originals or certified copies when SSA requests evidence.
- Do not mail irreplaceable originals unless SSA’s instructions specifically direct you to do so.
- Keep a record of the submission and appointment details for your files.
Because eligibility rules and acceptable evidence can change, the live SSA page is more reliable than an old blog post, an unofficial form or advice from a service that charges a fee.

Fees, delivery and what to expect after applying
SSA replacement cards cost $0. A website or caller asking for a payment-card number to “release” a replacement is not part of the normal SSA service.
SSA processes and mails replacement cards; an office does not normally print one for you on the spot. A February 23, 2026 SSA explainer said cards are usually mailed within 10 business days after processing. That is an agency estimate, not a guaranteed delivery date, and processing time can vary with the case, document review, mail service and current workload.
Use the address and contact details shown in the current SSA flow. If the card does not arrive within the estimate, check the status through your account or contact SSA using contact information obtained directly from ssa.gov. Avoid clicking an unsolicited “delivery problem” link that asks for your SSN or payment details.
Replacement route comparison
| Route | How it starts | What you should expect | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online request | SSA screening page, then personal my Social Security account | Submit the request electronically; SSA determines whether evidence or another step is needed | Applicants whose circumstances meet SSA’s online eligibility rules |
| Online start with appointment | SSA screening page and electronic pre-application | Schedule and attend an appointment at the designated office or card center with the requested evidence | Cases that cannot be completed entirely online but can be initiated online |
| Office or card-center application | Current Form SS-5 and SSA instructions | Present the form and required original or certified documents; the card is mailed after processing | Applicants directed to apply in person or who do not use an online start |
Protect yourself while the card is missing
Until you decide whether to replace the card, keep other records containing the number out of reach. Store tax forms, wage statements, insurance records and copies of identification in a locked location. When you no longer need paper records containing personal information, the FTC recommends destroying them before disposal; a cross-cut paper shredder is one optional way to do that. Shredding does not replace reporting, account security or credit protections.

If the number may have been exposed or misused
A lost card and an abused SSN require different responses. Signs of possible misuse include unfamiliar credit accounts or inquiries, collection notices for debts you did not incur, wages that do not belong to you, a tax notice about a return you did not file, or a financial institution alert about an unknown transaction.
1. Report suspected identity theft to the FTC
SSA directs identity-theft reporting to the Federal Trade Commission, not to SSA. Use IdentityTheft.gov to create an identity-theft report and a personalized recovery plan. Save the report, the recovery checklist and copies of correspondence; companies may ask for that information when you dispute accounts.
The FTC recovery process generally begins with the organization connected to the problem. Call the affected bank, lender, card issuer or service provider, explain that the account or transaction is fraudulent, and ask it to close or freeze the account. Change the login, password and personal identification number for any account that may have been exposed, using a device you trust.

2. Choose a credit freeze or fraud alert
Both tools address new-account fraud, but they impose different levels of friction.
| Protection | How it works | Where you place it | Duration and practical effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Credit freeze | Blocks prospective creditors from accessing your credit report until you authorize access | Separately with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion | Free and remains until you lift it; temporarily lift it when a lender or other authorized party needs access for an application |
| Initial fraud alert | Asks businesses to verify your identity before opening new credit | Contact one of the three nationwide credit bureaus; that bureau must notify the other two | Free and lasts one year; an extended alert may be available to qualifying identity-theft victims |
A freeze is the stronger default when you do not expect to apply for credit soon and can manage separate bureau accounts. A fraud alert may be more convenient if you expect a lender to check your file and prefer a verification warning rather than a full access block. Neither option closes an existing fraudulent account, removes inaccurate information or replaces a dispute with the affected company.

- Enhanced Efficiency and Security: Effectively shreds 14 sheets of paper per pass into 5 /32” x 1-9/16” cross-cut particles (Security Level P-4), providing greater security for confidential documents
- Powerful Deskside Shredding: Successfully shreds credit cards, paper clips, staples and unopened junk mail in addition to paper

- Safety Lock for Added Protection: Comes equipped with patented Safety Lock, disabling the machine as needed to protect you, your family or your pets
- Convenient Pull Out Bin to Eliminate Mess: 5-gallon pull out bin neatly contains over 250 shredded sheets
3. Review reports and financial activity
Examine your credit reports for accounts, inquiries and addresses you do not recognize. Review bank, brokerage, payment and utility accounts for unfamiliar transactions or profile changes. Contact each organization through a verified phone number or official portal, not a number in a suspicious message.
Ask the affected company what evidence it needs to investigate, close or freeze the account. Keep dates, names, confirmation numbers and copies of letters. That file helps you track multiple disputes and supports the recovery plan created by the FTC.
4. Check your Social Security earnings record
Someone using your SSN for employment can cause wages to appear in your Social Security earnings record even when you never worked for that employer. Review the record through SSA and report wages that are not yours. SSA can address errors in its earnings records; it does not conduct the FTC’s identity-theft recovery process.
5. Address possible tax misuse with the IRS
If you receive a notice about a tax return, refund or employer information that you do not recognize, follow the IRS’s current identity-theft instructions. Tax identity theft is handled through the IRS process, separately from an SSA earnings-record correction and an FTC identity-theft report.
Do not rush to request a new Social Security number
A replacement card carries the same number. SSA describes issuing an entirely new SSN as rare. Its guidance says to report identity theft, try to resolve the resulting problems and then ask SSA whether you may qualify if the problems persist.
A new number also does not automatically erase records tied to the old one. Credit history, employment records, tax information and other files can remain connected to the former number, so correcting fraudulent accounts and records is still necessary. Requesting a card replacement is therefore not a remedy for identity theft by itself.

Recognize replacement-card scams
Scammers imitate government websites, sponsored search results, social accounts and telephone agents. The SSA OIG’s March 10, 2026 alert warns that impostors may seek your SSN, birth date and payment-card details while pretending to provide a card service.
- Type ssa.gov into your browser instead of following an unsolicited link.
- Check the address bar before entering your SSN, birth date or financial information.
- Ignore claims that a fee is required to replace a card; SSA replacement cards are free.
- End unexpected calls that demand immediate payment or threaten suspension of benefits, then independently locate the agency’s contact information.
- Never give a caller a one-time security code or account password.
A legitimate government process can require identity verification, but it should not require payment for the replacement card or pressure you to disclose information through an unverified channel.
A practical action plan
- Confirm the situation. Decide whether you only lost the physical card or whether there are signs of number misuse.
- Check whether you need the card. If you know the SSN and no organization requires the physical document, secure your records and avoid an unnecessary replacement request.
- Use SSA’s screening page. Let the current questions determine your eligible application route.
- Apply through the route SSA provides. Use my Social Security, an online-start appointment or Form SS-5 with the required original or certified evidence.
- Pay nothing for the card. Replacement is free; the card is mailed after processing.
- Secure your information. Store the new card safely, limit who receives your SSN and destroy sensitive paper records before disposal.
- If misuse is possible, report it promptly. Create an IdentityTheft.gov report, contact affected companies, change exposed credentials and preserve documentation.
- Select credit protection. Place a freeze with all three bureaus or an initial fraud alert through one bureau, based on how much restriction you need.
- Check specialized records. Review your credit reports, Social Security earnings record and tax notices, contacting the responsible agency for each error.
The key distinction is simple: replacing a missing card restores a physical document; it does not change the SSN or investigate fraud. Handle those as separate tasks, using SSA for the card and number-record questions, the FTC for identity-theft recovery, the credit bureaus for freezes or alerts, and the IRS for tax-related misuse.
