There is no single guaranteed number of days from submission to GSTIN. The portal’s rules distinguish the filing deadline, the effective date of registration, authentication windows, and conditional deemed-approval periods. The correct documents and authentication route also depend on your constitution, authorised signatory, premises, and the route assigned to your application.

Who should use this online GST registration process?
This guide is for businesses applying in India through the ordinary normal taxpayer route using Form REG-01 on the GST Portal. It covers the common online sequence and the special branches described in the portal guidance.

#1 Best Overall
Normal taxpayer versus casual taxable person
A normal taxpayer generally follows the TRN, application, authentication, and ARN sequence described below. A casual taxable person has a separate timing requirement: the portal guide says the application must be made at least five days before the business starts. Treat that as an advance-filing rule, not as a promise that approval will arrive within five days.
Why your facts change the checklist
The document set varies with the constitution of the business, the people acting for it, and the legal basis on which each business premises is occupied. A partnership, company, trust, sole proprietor, or other entity should select documents that substantiate its own facts rather than uploading every example shown in a generic list.
Documents to gather before opening the application
The GST Portal checklist and registration manual identify the following categories. They are conditional examples, not a requirement that every applicant provide every item.

| Additional places of business | Comparable premises evidence for each additional location | Only if the business declares additional places |
Owned premises
For premises owned by the applicant, the detailed portal guide gives examples such as a latest property-tax receipt, municipal khata copy, or electricity bill. The document should support the ownership or lawful possession represented in the application.

Rented or leased premises
For a rented or leased location, prepare a valid rent or lease agreement together with ownership evidence for the lessor. The agreement alone may not establish the owner’s title, so keep both parts available when the portal or reviewing officer requires them.
Shared, consent-based, or other premises
For premises used with another person’s consent, the guide describes a consent letter plus ownership evidence for the person giving consent. This route is different from a conventional lease and should be documented accordingly.
File format and size
The manual describes premises uploads in PDF or JPEG format and specifies a maximum size of 1 MB for the principal-place proof attachment covered by that instruction. Upload limits and accepted document types can change with the live interface, so check the current upload screen before filing and keep legible, complete scans rather than heavily compressed images.

Prepare your information and files
- Use an email address and mobile number that the applicant can access throughout the application.
- Have the legal name, constitution details, promoter or partner information, and authorised-signatory details consistent across the form and supporting documents.
- Scan documents so names, dates, signatures, addresses, and page edges are readable.
- Organise premises documents by principal location and each additional location; do not attach a lease for one address to a different address in the form.
- Keep the person whose Aadhaar or other identity verification may be requested available during the authentication window.
- Record the TRN as soon as it is issued. Losing it can make it harder to return to a saved application.
How to register for GST online: the REG-01 sequence
- Open the official GST Portal and choose New Registration. Select the registration option for a new taxpayer and the state or union territory in which the registration is required. Use the normal-taxpayer route unless your facts place you in a different category.
- Complete the initial details. Enter the requested taxpayer, state, legal-name, email, and mobile information. The portal sends OTPs to validate the email address and mobile number.
- Save the TRN. After the initial validation, the portal issues a Temporary Reference Number. Copy it accurately and retain any on-screen confirmation. The TRN lets you return to the unfinished application.
- Return to the application with the TRN. Use the GST Portal’s TRN-based continuation option, enter the requested verification details, and open the saved form.
- Complete the application tabs. The portal guide describes tabs covering business information; promoters or partners; the authorised signatory; the principal and additional places of business; goods and services; Aadhaar authentication; and verification. Complete only the sections relevant to the business, but do not leave required fields inconsistent with the uploaded evidence.
- Enter premises details carefully. Identify the principal place and any additional places, then attach the occupancy-appropriate proof. A company’s incorporation document does not replace premises evidence, and a premises document does not replace proof of constitution.
- Upload supporting documents. Attach the constitution proof, photographs, signatory appointment evidence, and premises documents that apply. Check file type, size, page legibility, and whether the attachment actually relates to the address or person named in that section.
- Complete the authentication branch shown by the portal. The portal may provide an Aadhaar OTP link, route the case to biometric verification at a designated GST Suvidha Kendra (GSK), or require photo and document verification where Aadhaar authentication is not used. The branch is conditional; not every applicant must visit a GSK.
- Submit using an available electronic verification method. Finish the applicable verification and declaration steps. Once the required submission and authentication actions are completed, the portal issues an Application Reference Number (ARN). Save the ARN and the submission acknowledgement.
Are bank details required at the initial stage?
According to the portal guide, bank-account details are not mandatory in the initial registration application. They may be added later through a non-core amendment after the GSTIN is granted. This does not remove any separate banking or compliance obligations that may apply to your business; it only describes the registration form’s stated sequence.

Aadhaar OTP, biometric GSK, and non-Aadhaar verification
Authentication is a decision point in the online process, not a universal extra visit. The portal can route an application according to the applicable case or risk parameters.
Aadhaar OTP route
Where Aadhaar authentication is offered through an OTP link, follow the link sent by the portal and complete the requested identity confirmation. The GST Portal FAQ states that the Aadhaar-verification link remains active for 15 days. Complete it within that window and monitor the application for any subsequent instruction.
Biometric verification at a GSK
Some applicants are directed to a designated GST Suvidha Kendra for biometric authentication and document verification. In that branch, an online form submission by itself may not be enough. The portal’s instructions specify an allowed period for completing the required biometric and document steps; if the applicant does not complete them, an ARN may not be generated and the application is not treated as submitted.
Choosing not to use Aadhaar authentication
If the applicant opts out of Aadhaar authentication, the portal guidance calls for photo capture and document verification at a designated GSK. This is a different route from the Aadhaar OTP path and can require an in-person visit.
Rank #4
What to do when authentication fails
Read the status message and any portal notice instead of submitting a duplicate application immediately. An unsuccessful Aadhaar authentication is not treated as a standard seven-working-day deemed approval case. Resolve the requested identity or document action within the displayed window and keep evidence of completed steps.
GST registration timeline: filing deadline, effective date, and approval
These are three different concepts. Confusing them is the main reason applicants believe the portal has promised a fixed approval time when it has not.
| Timing concept | Rule stated in the portal materials | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Deadline to file for a normal taxpayer | If liability to register arises, filing within 30 days is the condition described for the effective-date rule | Track the date liability arises and do not wait until the final day to assemble documents |
| Effective date of registration | When filed within 30 days after liability arises, registration is effective from the date liability arises; when filed late, the effective date is the grant date | This is a legal effective-date rule, not a processing-time estimate |
| Casual taxable person filing | Application at least five days before commencement of business | Apply in advance; the five-day figure is not an approval guarantee |
| Aadhaar link window | The Aadhaar verification link remains active for 15 days | Complete the link-based action before it expires |
| Conditional deemed approval | The FAQ describes deemed approval after 30 calendar days if the tax official takes no action | This is a conditional legal mechanism, not a typical turnaround promise |
There is no universal “GSTIN in X days” promise
The normal-taxpayer guide does not establish one guaranteed number of days from application to GSTIN. Processing can depend on the application, authentication outcome, document review, and whether the officer issues a notice. Check the portal status rather than relying on an online estimate.
How notices affect the timeline
If a tax official issues a notice, the FAQ describes additional response and action windows. Read the notice in the portal, provide the requested clarification or document by the stated deadline, and check for a revised status. The 30-calendar-day deemed-approval language applies only where the stated no-action conditions are met; it should not be treated as automatic approval after any 30-day wait.

How to track the application and respond to problems
- Open the GST Portal’s registration or application-status service.
- Use the ARN issued after successful submission and authentication, or the available TRN/status option when the application has not yet reached ARN stage.
- Read the exact status label and open any notice, clarification request, or appointment instruction.
- Respond through the portal using the requested form or upload area; do not assume that sending an unrelated email completes the response.
- Save acknowledgements, uploaded files, and dates of every response for your records.
Common failure modes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely issue | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| The upload is rejected | Wrong file type, file too large, unreadable scan, or document attached to the wrong section | Check the live portal limit, convert to an accepted PDF or JPEG, rescan clearly, and attach it to the matching address or person |
| The legal name does not match | Form data differs from the constitution document or identity record | Correct the application data or obtain the proper supporting evidence; do not force a spelling mismatch through submission |
| No ARN appears | Required Aadhaar, biometric, photo, or document verification is incomplete | Review the authentication status and complete the specified step within its allowed period |
| The premises proof is questioned | Occupancy route was selected incorrectly or ownership evidence is missing | Use the owned, rented/leased, or consent-based document combination that matches the actual arrangement |
| A notice is issued | The reviewing officer needs clarification or additional evidence | Open the notice, answer each point by the deadline, and upload a focused response rather than a duplicate application |
| The application was filed late | The 30-day liability window was missed | Continue the application, but understand that the effective date is generally the grant date under the portal’s stated rule |
Choosing the correct branch before you submit
| Decision point | Branch A | Branch B |
|---|---|---|
| Applicant category | Normal taxpayer: use the ordinary REG-01 sequence | Casual taxable person: apply at least five days before business starts |
| Principal premises | Owned: ownership-supporting evidence | Rented, leased, or consent-based: agreement or consent plus the relevant owner’s evidence |
| Identity verification | Aadhaar OTP when offered | Biometric GSK or non-Aadhaar photo/document verification when routed or selected |
| Filing date | Within 30 days after liability arises: effective-date rule can run from liability date | After 30 days: effective date is the grant date under the stated rule |
The portal, not a generic checklist, determines the final branch for your application. Use the current on-screen instructions and do not schedule a GSK visit unless the portal directs you to do so.
When professional help is sensible
You can complete the online process yourself when the entity records, premises documents, and authorised-signatory details are straightforward. Consider a qualified GST practitioner or tax professional if ownership is shared, the business has several locations, the constitution has recently changed, the signatory authority is complex, or a notice challenges the evidence. Professional help is optional; the official process does not make a paid adviser a prerequisite.
Final pre-submission checklist
- Confirm that you are using the India GST Portal’s current New Registration service and the route that matches your applicant category.
- Verify legal name, constitution, state, promoters or partners, and authorised signatory against the supporting records.
- Prepare the correct premises package for owned, rented/leased, or consent-based occupancy.
- Check photographs, authorisation evidence, PDF or JPEG format, file size, and readability.
- Record the TRN and complete every required application tab.
- Watch for the 15-day Aadhaar link window or any biometric/GSK appointment instruction.
- Submit electronically, save the ARN, and monitor the portal for notices.
- Keep the 30-day liability rule, five-day casual-taxable-person rule, and conditional 30-calendar-day deemed-approval rule separate from the actual processing time.
The safest way to register is to let your actual constitution, premises, and authentication route drive the application. Gather matching evidence first, submit through the official portal, complete any identity or GSK action within the displayed window, and use the ARN to track the case instead of assuming a fixed approval date. Portal labels, upload limits, and instructions can change, so verify the live requirements immediately before filing; the materials summarized here do not state a publication year.
