To register for Goods and Services Tax (GST) in India, use the GST Portal’s Services → Registration → New Registration route. A standard application begins with your PAN, legal name, State or Union Territory, district, and the primary authorized signatory’s accessible email address and Indian mobile number. After separate OTP checks, the portal creates a Temporary Reference Number (TRN) so you can complete Part B, upload evidence suited to your premises, verify the application electronically, and retain the acknowledgement and Application Reference Number (ARN).
This is a practical overview for the normal taxpayer route, not individualized tax advice. India’s portal guidance is being updated: a 9 October 2026 PIB FAQ says a consolidated document guideline and amended REG-01 guidance are being clarified. Treat the live form and current circular as the final authority rather than any old screenshot or checklist.

First confirm that you are using India’s GST process
GST systems differ by country. The procedure here is for India, using the Indian GST Portal, GSTN’s registration tutorial and the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) registration rules. If you are registering a non-Indian business, use that country’s tax authority instead.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The standard online flow is designed for a normal taxpayer. The portal tutorial also discusses composition taxpayers, casual taxable persons, Input Service Distributors (ISDs) and Special Economic Zone (SEZ) applicants, while the CBIC rules prescribe separate procedures for some classes such as non-resident taxable persons. Choosing the wrong taxpayer type can put you on the wrong form and evidence path.
#1 Best Overall
| Applicant situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Ordinary business establishing a regular GST registration | Use the normal taxpayer route beginning at gst.gov.in and select the taxpayer type shown by the live portal. |
| Composition, casual, ISD or SEZ applicant | Choose the corresponding category in the registration flow and follow its additional fields and documents. |
| Non-resident taxable person or another special class covered by CBIC rules | Do not assume the normal route is identical; use the procedure and form applicable to that category. |
The portal’s current labels and the applicable CBIC rule control if they differ from an older tutorial.
What to prepare before opening the application
PAN, legal name and contact channels
PAN is the initial identifier in the standard registration flow. Enter the legal name exactly as associated with that PAN, then select the State or Union Territory and district. Provide an email address and Indian mobile number that the primary authorized signatory can access. The portal verifies email and mobile separately with OTPs, so an inbox or phone that somebody else controls can stop the application at the first screen.
Business and people information
Have the entity’s constitution ready—such as proprietorship, partnership, company, trust or another form—and the details the form requests for promoters, partners, directors or other stakeholders. The exact proof depends on the constitution and the current REG-01 fields.
Select a primary authorized signatory and keep that person’s identity and contact details available. GST’s official signatory FAQ confirms that a new registration cannot be submitted without one. Where the live form asks for it, also prepare appointment or authorization evidence and a photograph.
Premises evidence must match possession
The document is not interchangeable across every address arrangement. Use the category that describes your principal place of business and include the supporting owner or consenter evidence requested by the form.

| How you occupy the premises | Typical evidence described in the GST Portal tutorial | Check before uploading |
|---|---|---|
| Owned | A supporting ownership record, such as a latest property-tax receipt, municipal khata copy or electricity bill. | The document should identify the premises and the owner in a way the application can connect to your business. |
| Rented or leased | A valid rent or lease agreement plus supporting ownership evidence for the lessor. | Make sure the agreement is current and the lessor’s ownership proof is included when the form requires it. |
| Consented, shared or another arrangement | A consent letter plus supporting ownership evidence of the person giving consent. | Use the arrangement that actually exists; do not substitute an ownership document for consent where you do not own the premises. |
These are working examples, not a universal final checklist. The 9 October 2026 PIB FAQ says comprehensive document guidance and amended REG-01 instructions are being clarified. Check the on-screen prompts and the current circular for your entity, state and address.
Business locations and activities
List the principal place of business and disclose additional places of business when applicable. Prepare a concise description of the activities at each location. For goods, the form asks for HSN information; for services, it asks for the relevant Service Classification Code. Use the classifications that fit what you actually supply and follow the current form’s search and selection instructions.
Verification choice and file preparation
The portal may offer or assign Aadhaar authentication. If you opt out, the GST tutorial says you may be directed to photograph capture and document verification at a designated GST Suvidha Kendra (GSK). Follow the route displayed for your applicant and signatory rather than assuming every application has the same appointment requirement.
Scan documents clearly, in the file type and size permitted by the live application. The tutorial warns against blank files and unclear scans. Because upload specifications can change, use the limits shown beside the upload control instead of relying on an old numeric limit.
How to register for GST online in India
- Open the registration service. Go to
gst.gov.in, choose Services → Registration → New Registration, and select the taxpayer type shown by the portal. The PIB’s 9 October 2026 FAQ confirms this entry path; you can read it at the official PIB GST registration FAQ. - Complete the initial form. Select the State or Union Territory and district. Enter the legal name as recorded against the PAN, the PAN itself, and the primary authorized signatory’s email and Indian mobile number.
- Verify both contact channels. Request and enter the email OTP and mobile OTP separately. Keep the signatory available until both checks succeed; an inaccessible channel cannot be treated as verified.
- Record the TRN. After successful OTP verification, the portal generates a Temporary Reference Number. Save it securely. A TRN lets you reopen a saved draft, but it is not proof that an application has been filed.
- Return to the draft and enter Part B. Use the TRN and the portal’s login prompts to continue. The CBIC rules describe the substantive application as Part B of FORM GST REG-01, with the specified supporting documents.
- Complete Business Details. Enter the constitution, registration or incorporation information requested, the date and nature of business, and any other fields displayed for your applicant category. Use the entity’s legal records consistently.
- Add promoters, partners or other stakeholders. Provide the people and identifiers the form requests for your constitution. Check spelling, PAN details and roles before moving on.
- Designate the primary authorized signatory. Add the person who will sign or verify the application and attach any appointment, authorization or photograph requested by the current form. The portal will not allow submission without a primary signatory.
- Complete the authorized representative section if applicable. If a representative is being used, provide the details and authorization evidence requested. Do not add a representative merely to fill a mandatory-looking field if the live form does not require one for your case.
- Enter place-of-business details. Add the principal address, contact information and possession type. Upload the matching owned, rented/leased, consented or shared-premises evidence. Add additional places of business if the enterprise operates from them.
- Describe goods and services. Select HSN entries for goods and Service Classification Codes for services, following the portal’s current search and validation behavior. Include the business activity and supply information requested by the form.
- Provide state-specific information. Complete any fields that appear for your State or Union Territory, including local registrations or other details the live form requests.
- Review Aadhaar authentication instructions. If you choose or are offered Aadhaar authentication, complete the prompted identity checks. If you do not use Aadhaar, follow the alternative photo and GSK verification instructions displayed for your case.
- Check the full application before verification. Compare the PAN-linked legal name, contacts, signatory, addresses, premises evidence and activity classifications with your source records. Correct omissions before signing.
- Verify and electronically submit. Use an available electronic signing or verification method offered by the portal. A saved draft or TRN alone is not a submission.
- Save the acknowledgement and ARN. After the portal accepts the filing, retain the electronic acknowledgement. The CBIC rules provide for an acknowledgement in FORM GST REG-02, and the portal identifies the application reference as the ARN. Keep it for status checks and later notices.
What each application tab is asking for
The registration guide groups the detailed application into distinct tabs. Knowing their purpose helps you gather information in the right order:
Rank #3
- Business Details: the legal constitution, core business information and related identifiers.
- Promoter/Partners: stakeholders and their particulars relevant to the entity type.
- Authorized Signatory: the mandatory primary signatory and any supporting authorization information.
- Authorized Representative: representative details when one is appointed or required.
- Principal Place of Business: the main address, contact data, possession arrangement, activities and proof.
- Additional Places of Business: other premises used for the business, when applicable.
- Goods and Services: HSN information for goods and Service Classification Codes for services.
- State Specific Information: fields that depend on the selected State or Union Territory.
- Aadhaar Authentication: the Aadhaar or alternative verification path presented by the portal.
- Verification: declarations, electronic signature or other submission checks.
Fields can be added, removed or relabeled as the portal and REG-01 guidance change. Treat the current screen—not a third-party walkthrough—as the definitive instruction for what your application must contain.

1. Entering a name that does not match PAN
Use the legal name associated with the PAN, including spelling and punctuation shown in the relevant records. A mismatch at the first stage can prevent validation or create inconsistencies later in the form.
2. Using OTP channels the signatory cannot access
Because email and mobile are verified separately, both must be live and accessible during filing. Avoid a former employee’s number, an unattended company inbox or a number that cannot receive the portal’s message.
3. Leaving the primary signatory unselected
Part B cannot be submitted until a primary authorized signatory is designated. Add that person early, collect any appointment or authorization proof, and confirm that the signatory’s contact details are correct.
4. Uploading the wrong premises proof
Owned, rented/leased, consented and shared premises have different evidence paths. A rent agreement without the lessor’s supporting ownership evidence, or a consent letter without the consenter’s ownership proof, may not satisfy the form. Match the upload to the actual arrangement.

5. Submitting blank, unreadable or obsolete files
The portal warns about blank and unclear scans. Open every file before uploading, check that all pages are legible, and use the current file type and size shown beside the upload field.
6. Choosing incomplete or inaccurate classifications
List the HSN information for goods and the service classification for services that you really supply. An incomplete activity description can create clarification requests or require correction after filing.
7. Mistaking a TRN for a filed application
A TRN only preserves a draft. You still need to finish every required tab, complete verification and submit electronically. Keep the ARN and acknowledgement only after the portal confirms receipt.
8. Treating every supplemental field as mandatory
The GST Portal manual says bank-account details were made optional in the application and may be added by amendment after registration. Portal behavior can change, so follow the current interface: complete a field when the live form requires it, not because an old screenshot shows it.
9. Assuming an old checklist is complete
The October 2026 PIB FAQ says a comprehensive guideline and amended REG-01 guidance are being clarified. Do not describe tutorial examples as the final list for every applicant. Check the current circular and the prompts generated for your entity and premises.

After submission: acknowledgement, status and notices
Save the ARN, the REG-02 acknowledgement and a copy of the submitted information. Use the portal’s application-status function to follow progress and to read any notice or request for clarification. The available material does not establish a single approval time for every applicant, so do not rely on a promised number of days. The actual status, notice and response deadline shown in your portal account control.
If the department asks for clarification, answer through the channel and within the period stated in the notice, using documents that directly address the question. Keep the originals and the files you submitted so your response is consistent with the application.
When to get professional help
Many straightforward applicants can complete the standard online flow themselves. Consider a qualified GST practitioner or chartered accountant if the entity has several partners or directors, shared or disputed premises, multiple states, non-resident status, SEZ operations, unusual authorization arrangements or uncertainty about classification. Professional help is optional; it does not replace the portal’s own requirements or guarantee approval.
