Refinancing replaces one or more existing student loans with a new private loan. It can lower your interest rate or monthly payment, but refinancing federal loans privately also ends federal protections and cannot be undone by asking the new lender to restore them. Before applying, identify which loans you have, decide whether you need federal benefits, and compare written offers by APR, term, total payments and payment-risk features—not by the advertised rate alone.
Federal Direct Consolidation is a separate process. It combines eligible federal loans inside the federal program at a weighted-average fixed rate; it is not a private refinance and does not, by itself, promise a lower rate.

What student-loan refinancing actually does
A private refinance creates a new private student loan. The new lender uses its proceeds to pay off loans you select, and you then make payments under the new contract. You may refinance existing private loans, federal loans, or a mixture, subject to the lender’s rules. The result is a private obligation even when the debt you replaced was federal.

Federal Direct Consolidation also replaces underlying loans with one new loan, but the new loan remains in the federal system. Its interest rate is a weighted average of the rates on the loans being consolidated, and federal rules determine the available repayment and relief programs. Private refinancing is underwritten by a private lender and follows the private contract.

Private refinancing
- Creates a new private loan and a new interest rate, term and payment schedule.
- May be used for private loans, federal loans, or both if the lender accepts them.
- Can reduce the rate or payment for a borrower who qualifies, but the quoted range is not a personal offer.
- Removes federal benefits from any federal balance moved into the private loan.
Federal Direct Consolidation
- Combines eligible federal loans while keeping the debt in the federal program.
- Uses a weighted-average fixed interest rate rather than a lender’s individually underwritten refinance rate.
- Can change the repayment period and may affect qualifying-payment credit or other benefits.
- Unpaid interest may be added to principal, increasing the balance on which future interest accrues.
Should you refinance? Start with this decision test
Refinancing is most defensible when the loans are already private, the new offer materially improves the cost or payment you need, and you can comfortably meet the new contract even if circumstances change. A lower advertised APR is not enough. Test the offer against your goals and the protections you would give up.
Refinancing may fit when
- Your existing loans are private, so no federal income-driven repayment, federal forgiveness, deferment, forbearance, discharge or cancellation rights are being surrendered.
- Your credit, income or a qualified cosigner produces a lower APR than the current loan after every required discount and fee is considered.
- You can afford the proposed payment for the entire term, or you have a deliberate reason to choose a longer term and understand its added interest.
- You want to simplify several private loans and the new contract has acceptable variable-rate, cosigner and hardship provisions.
Pause or decline when
- Any federal loan could be useful for an income-driven plan or forgiveness program.
- You work, or may work, for a qualifying public-service employer and are pursuing Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF).
- The lower payment comes mainly from extending the term and the resulting total payments are higher than you can accept.
- The offer is variable-rate and you would struggle if the rate or payment rises.
- You have not received complete written terms, including fees, caps, cosigner release and relief provisions.
PSLF is one example of a benefit that can be lost. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau describes forgiveness of a remaining balance after 120 qualifying payments on an income-driven repayment plan while working for a qualifying public-service employer; all program conditions still apply. Moving those federal loans to a private lender ends eligibility for that federal program.
How refinance rates are set
There is no universal student-loan refinance rate. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says private lenders base rates primarily on credit history or credit score. A lender may also evaluate income, existing obligations, the loan being refinanced, the chosen term and a cosigner’s history. A cosigner with stronger credit can affect the rate and fees, but also becomes responsible under the contract.

Dated example of one lender’s published ranges
On October 11, 2026, SoFi’s official refinance page displayed the following APR examples. The page said the examples included its stated autopay discount and SoFi Plus discount, and that actual pricing depends on term, financial history, cosigner history if any and other factors. State restrictions may apply. These figures are one lender’s dated examples, not a market average or a rate guarantee; rates should be checked again on the date you apply.
| Repayment term | Fixed APR example | Variable APR example |
|---|---|---|
| 5 years | 4.49%–10.99% | 5.74%–10.99% |
| 20 years | 6.97%–10.99% | 7.29%–10.99% |
The variable index can change monthly. A lower opening variable APR therefore does not establish the lowest cost over the life of the loan. Ask what index is used, how often the rate adjusts and what cap applies before comparing it with a fixed offer.

Eligibility: what to check before an application
Eligibility is lender-specific and can vary by state. Use each lender’s current criteria rather than assuming that approval by one lender predicts approval by another. As an illustration, SoFi states that refinance applicants must be at least the age of majority in their state, be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident or eligible non-permanent resident, and satisfy underwriting requirements. It also lists identity-document requirements and says its criteria were current as of December 2025. Those are that lender’s rules, not universal requirements.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Build an eligibility checklist
- State availability: Confirm that the lender offers refinancing where you live and note any state-specific restrictions.
- Status and age: Check the lender’s citizenship or residency categories, age of majority rule and ability to enter the contract.
- Loan types and balances: Verify that each existing loan type, school status and balance is accepted and that minimum or maximum balances fit your situation.
- Underwriting: Review stated credit, income and debt requirements. Ask how a cosigner changes eligibility, rate and fees.
- Documents: Prepare the identity and financial documents listed in the lender’s current application instructions.
- Repayment terms: Confirm available fixed and variable options, terms, payment dates, relief provisions and cosigner-release rules before submitting.
Criteria and rates change. Recheck the lender’s own pages directly before an application and save the version of the disclosures you relied on.
Step-by-step: a safer refinance process
- Inventory every loan. Record the current balance, interest rate, fixed or variable status, monthly payment, remaining term and whether the loan is federal or private. Separate federal loans from private loans before requesting quotes.
- Mark federal benefits you may need. Check whether you rely on an income-driven repayment plan, PSLF or another federal deferment, forbearance, discharge or cancellation protection. If a benefit matters, do not treat a private quote as an equivalent replacement.
- Set a payment and term target. Decide the highest monthly payment you can sustain and the longest term you would accept. A longer term can lower the bill while increasing total interest; a shorter term generally raises the bill but can reduce the period over which interest accrues.
- Check current eligibility. Compare state, residency, age, loan-type, balance, credit, income and cosigner requirements for each lender you are considering.
- Request comparable offers. Use the same assumed balance and repayment term wherever possible. Record whether each quote is fixed or variable, which discounts are conditional and when the quote expires.
- Read the complete disclosures. Capture APR, monthly payment, number of payments, total payments, fees, rate-adjustment rules and caps, prepayment terms, cosigner release, and hardship, deferment, forbearance, death and disability provisions.
- Stress-test the payment. For a variable loan, examine the payment if the rate rises within the stated cap. For a longer term, compare the total payment with the shorter alternatives. Do not choose solely because the first monthly bill is smaller.
- Apply only after the trade-off is clear. Submit the documents requested by the lender and verify that the final approval matches the offer you compared. Keep your existing loan accounts current until the new lender confirms that payoffs have completed.
- Verify the new account. After funding, check that the old balances were paid, the new rate and autopay date are correct, and the first statement reflects the agreed terms. Store the contract and payoff confirmations.
Compare offers on an identical basis
Written disclosures are more useful than a marketing range. Compare the same balance and term so that a 5-year offer is not mistaken for a cheaper 20-year offer simply because its monthly payment is lower. Use the following checklist for each proposal.
| Term to compare | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| APR and discounts | What is the APR after all discounts? Does a discount require autopay, membership or another condition? |
| Rate type | Is the rate fixed or variable? If variable, what index is used, how often can it adjust and what cap limits increases? |
| Term and payment | How many payments are required, and what is the scheduled monthly payment? |
| Total cost | What is the total of all scheduled payments over the full term, including any financed charges? |
| Fees | Are there application, origination, late or other charges? Is there a prepayment penalty? |
| Cosigner provisions | Can a cosigner be released, and what exact payment history or other conditions apply? |
| Relief and discharge | What happens after a hardship, deferment or forbearance request, or in the event of death or disability? |
| Availability and eligibility | Is the product available in your state, and do you satisfy the lender’s current underwriting rules? |
Look beyond the monthly payment
Total payments are the monthly payment multiplied by the number of scheduled payments, adjusted for any charges included in the contract. A term extension can make the monthly figure look attractive while adding years of interest. Compare APR and total payments alongside the monthly bill, then decide whether the cash-flow benefit is worth the added cost.
Shorter repayment periods commonly produce higher monthly payments. They may reduce total interest, but only if the payment remains affordable. An unaffordable payment creates a different risk than a higher total cost, so choose a term using your budget rather than a maximum approval amount.

Income-driven repayment and forgiveness
Private lenders do not provide the federal income-driven repayment system. If your income falls, a private contract may not offer a payment formula tied to income. Refinancing can also end eligibility for PSLF and other federal forgiveness programs. The CFPB’s 2024 supervisory report states: “When borrowers refinance or consolidate these loans through a private lender, they lose these benefits and protections.”
Deferment, forbearance, discharge and cancellation
Federal programs have defined rules for certain periods of deferment or forbearance and for discharge or cancellation in qualifying circumstances. A private lender may offer hardship options, but the terms, approval standards and duration are contractual and can differ substantially. Read those provisions before giving up federal status.
Fixed-versus-variable payment risk
Most federal loans have fixed rates. A private variable rate can rise when its index changes, potentially increasing the payment after you refinance. Compare the highest payment that the contract permits, not only the initial APR. If a rise would force you to miss payments, a fixed offer or retaining the existing loan may be safer even when its opening rate is higher.

Replacing a loan with a longer term can reduce the monthly bill while increasing total interest. The reverse is also possible: a shorter term can lower total interest but require a payment that strains your budget. Evaluate both outcomes using the actual disclosures for your balance.
Tax and servicemember considerations
The CFPB flags possible tax consequences when student debt is refinanced together with non-student debt. Keep student and non-student balances separate unless a qualified tax professional has reviewed the consequences. The CFPB also notes that servicemembers may lose the benefit of the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act interest-rate cap when a federal loan is refinanced privately. If that protection could apply to you, get advice before signing.

If your goal is one federal payment rather than a lower privately underwritten rate, evaluate a Direct Consolidation Loan separately. Federal Student Aid says its rate is a weighted average of the underlying loan rates and that the new rate is fixed. Because it is calculated from existing rates, consolidation is not the same as refinancing for a lower rate.

Review the consequences before consolidating. Unpaid interest may be added to principal; a lower payment may result from paying for longer; and consolidation can affect qualifying-payment credit or certain benefits. Confirm how your specific loans and payment history will be treated under the current federal rules. A federal consolidation preserves the federal framework, but it still changes the loan and can change its cost and timeline.
Cosigners: rate help and responsibility
A cosigner with stronger credit may improve an offer’s rate or fees, according to the CFPB. The cosigner also has contractual responsibility if the primary borrower does not pay. Ask whether release is available, the number of on-time payments required, and any income or credit tests that apply. Do not assume that a release is automatic after a period of successful payments.
Compare an offer with and without a cosigner when possible. The lowest rate is not necessarily the best arrangement if the release standard is unclear or the cosigner cannot accept the obligation.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Choosing the lowest advertised APR
Problem: The headline range may include discounts, a particular term or applicants with excellent credit.
Correction: Use the written APR for your application, identify every discount condition and compare the same term across lenders.

Using a long term to hide affordability problems
Problem: A smaller payment can increase total interest and keep the debt outstanding for many more years.

Correction: Compare total scheduled payments and select the shortest term that remains sustainable, rather than the longest term a lender approves.
Assuming variable rates stay near the opening rate
Problem: The index can change monthly and the payment can rise.
Correction: Record the index, adjustment frequency and cap, then budget for a higher permitted payment.
Refinancing federal loans before checking benefits
Problem: Private refinancing permanently removes federal repayment flexibility and forgiveness eligibility for the refinanced balance.
Correction: Identify every federal benefit you use or may need, and compare Direct Consolidation or staying in the federal program before requesting a private payoff.
Relying on an old eligibility page
Problem: State availability, underwriting criteria and rates can change.
Correction: Confirm current criteria and save the disclosures on the date you apply.
A practical decision worksheet
Write down the answers before accepting an offer:
- Which loans are federal and which are private?
- Would moving any federal balance end an income-driven plan, PSLF path or other protection I may need?
- What APR, term, monthly payment and total payments does each written offer show?
- For a variable offer, what index, adjustment schedule and cap apply?
- Which discounts require autopay or membership, and what happens if I stop qualifying?
- What fees, prepayment rules, cosigner-release conditions and hardship provisions apply?
- Can I afford the payment if income falls or a variable rate rises?
- Have I checked the lender’s current state and eligibility rules?
If you cannot answer one of these questions from the contract or disclosure, the offer is not ready for a final comparison.
Bottom line
Refinance private student loans only when the complete offer improves your situation and the payment remains safe under realistic conditions. Treat any federal loan differently: compare the value of federal repayment, forgiveness and relief protections with the private lender’s actual savings before signing. APR, total payments, rate-adjustment risk, fees and eligibility matter more than an advertised starting rate.
