Start by measuring memory pressure and identifying the process responsible. Then reduce background demand, update or remove the offending app, and check storage as well as RAM. High memory usage by itself is not always a fault: modern systems compress data, cache files and use available RAM to stay responsive. The warning signs are sustained memory pressure, heavy swapping, freezes, repeated crashes or one process that keeps growing.
What full memory actually means
RAM is the fast working space where the operating system and active apps keep data. Storage is the longer-term space used for files, photos, downloads and installed apps. When RAM demand exceeds what is available, the operating system can compress memory or move less-active data to storage (swap or paging). That keeps the device running, but storage is much slower than RAM. The result can be lag, long pauses, failed app launches and, eventually, crashes.

A high percentage in a memory meter is not automatically a problem. macOS, Windows and Android deliberately use spare RAM for caches and other work that can be discarded when an app needs space. Judge the situation by pressure and behavior rather than one percentage reading.
- Normal: RAM looks nearly full, but apps open normally, the system responds quickly and memory pressure stays low.
- Concerning: the device swaps heavily, freezes during ordinary work, becomes slow after running for a while, or repeatedly reports that an app is not responding.
- Strong evidence of a leak: one process grows continuously even when your workload is unchanged, and memory is not released after you close related windows or tasks.
Save important work before terminating anything. A forced termination can discard unsaved data, and repeated hard shutdowns can leave files or system updates incomplete.

Measure first, then change one thing at a time
Record what is using memory before closing apps or installing “cleaner” utilities. Note the largest processes, the amount of available storage, when the slowdown began, and whether the same process grows after a restart. This turns a vague “my RAM is full” complaint into a testable problem.
Windows evidence
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. If necessary, choose More details.
- On Processes, click the Memory column to sort from highest to lowest. Record the top users and watch them for several minutes while repeating the activity that triggers the slowdown.
- Open Performance > Memory to see total use, available memory and committed memory. A steadily rising process is more significant than a single high reading.
- For more detail, open Resource Monitor from Task Manager’s Performance page or by searching the Start menu. Use its memory view to examine working sets, standby memory and hard faults.
macOS evidence
Open Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor, then select Memory. Apple’s memory view includes Memory Pressure, Swap Used, compressed memory, wired memory and cached files. The Memory Pressure graph is the best first indicator: green generally means the system is coping, while yellow or red means increasing pressure. Apple states that red pressure indicates the Mac needs more RAM.
Sort the process list by the Memory column and observe whether a single app keeps expanding. A large cached-files figure is not the same as a leak because cached data can be reclaimed when needed.

Android exposes less live process detail on many models, so check both memory symptoms and storage. Open Settings > Storage and review the free-space figure. Google distinguishes storage, where files and apps are kept, from memory, where Android and running apps work. Google says a phone can start having issues when less than 10% of storage is free.
On phones that provide it, use Settings > Developer options > Memory to inspect average memory use and app activity. Do not enable Developer options solely to chase a percentage; the storage check, app behavior and safe-mode test are usually more useful.

Windows: reduce RAM use and isolate crashes
1. Remove avoidable startup and background load
In Task Manager, open Startup apps and disable programs you do not need immediately after sign-in. Disabling an entry prevents automatic launch; it does not uninstall the program. Leave security software, hardware controls and tools you rely on enabled. Microsoft recommends monitoring CPU, memory and disk usage while deciding which startup items are unnecessary.
Quit unused launchers, synchronisation tools, browser windows and virtual machines. If a background program returns after you close it, check its own settings for “start with Windows,” scheduled jobs or tray operation. Uninstall software that you no longer use rather than repeatedly ending its process.
2. Update before blaming Windows
Install pending Windows updates, device-driver updates from the computer or component maker, and updates for the app that crashes. Restart after updates so services and drivers are loaded cleanly. Retest the same workload and compare the process list with your earlier notes.
3. Test for a leaking process
If one process grows steadily, leave Task Manager or Resource Monitor visible while reproducing the issue. A process that climbs from a normal baseline to an ever-larger working set suggests a possible memory leak, an unbounded cache or a workload that the app cannot handle. Microsoft recommends using Performance Monitor for longer observation. Add counters for memory and the suspect process, log over time, and correlate growth with a particular file, plug-in or action.
Update, reinstall or replace the application after backing up its settings and data. If the growth stops in a clean user profile or without a particular extension, re-enable components one at a time to identify the trigger.

4. Treat stop codes as a separate problem
Crashes that show MEMORY_MANAGEMENT or PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA are not fixed reliably by clearing caches. Use Microsoft’s stop-code troubleshooting, Windows Memory Diagnostic and current driver checks. Record the exact stop code, recent hardware or driver changes and whether the crash occurs under a particular workload. Persistent failures may require crash-dump analysis or hardware service rather than more app cleanup.

That warning describes a system under sustained pressure; it does not prove that every crash is caused by insufficient physical RAM.
macOS: read Memory Pressure instead of chasing free RAM
1. Interpret the Activity Monitor graph
In Activity Monitor > Memory, look at Memory Pressure together with Swap Used and compressed memory. Pressure reflects free memory, swap rate, wired memory and cached files. A Mac can show little “free” RAM while still working efficiently because caches are available for immediate reuse.
If pressure stays yellow or red during your normal workload and Swap Used rises continually, reduce the number of active heavy apps and browser tabs. If pressure turns green as soon as a workload ends, the issue is demand rather than necessarily a failing component.
2. Quit safely
Select an unneeded process and choose the normal quit command first. Use Force Quit only when an app is unresponsive. Apple warns that force quitting can lose open-file changes and can affect apps that depend on the terminated process. Save documents, close projects normally and allow synchronisation to finish before terminating a process.

3. Check whether the Mac can be upgraded
Choose Apple menu > System Settings (or System Preferences on older releases), then open the system information view; Apple’s documentation directs users to Apple menu > System Information to check memory details and upgradeability. Some Macs have removable DIMM or SO-DIMM modules, while others have memory permanently integrated into the logic board. Do not buy a kit until the exact model, memory generation, slot count and maximum supported capacity are confirmed.
Android: free storage and test downloaded apps
1. Keep meaningful storage headroom
Open Settings > Storage. Remove or move large videos, downloads and offline maps, uninstall apps you no longer use, and empty app-specific trash folders. Aim to remain comfortably above Google’s 10% free-storage warning point rather than operating at the limit.
Storage pressure can look like a RAM problem: updates fail, apps cannot create temporary files, cameras stop saving photos and apps crash during launch. Freeing storage can resolve those symptoms even when the RAM hardware has not changed.
2. Update and stop only the app that is failing
Install Android system updates and updates for the affected app. If an app is frozen, open Settings > Apps > [app name] and choose Force stop, then launch it again. Force stopping is a targeted recovery step, not a routine way to improve battery life or memory; Android will restart services that it needs.

3. Clear cache before clearing storage
From the same app-info screen, choose Storage & cache > Clear cache first. Cached files are temporary and can be rebuilt. Clear storage (or Clear data on some devices) permanently removes that app’s locally stored data, accounts and settings, so use it only after confirming that important information is synchronised or backed up.

4. Use safe mode to identify a downloaded app
Boot the phone into the manufacturer’s safe mode, which temporarily disables downloaded apps. The exact button sequence varies by model; use the device’s support instructions. If crashes stop in safe mode, remove recently installed or updated apps one at a time and test after each removal. If the problem continues in safe mode, downloaded apps are less likely to be the cause, so focus on system updates, storage, hardware and service diagnostics.

| Evidence | Most appropriate next step | Reversibility and risk | Durability |
|---|---|---|---|
| One app dominates memory and keeps growing | Update, disable extensions, reinstall or replace that app; log growth with the platform’s monitoring tools | Updates and extension changes are reversible; reinstalling may require a backup | High if the leak or incompatible component is removed |
| Many apps compete, but pressure falls after closing background work | Disable unnecessary startup items, reduce simultaneous workloads and uninstall unused software | Usually reversible; avoid terminating security or hardware services blindly | Medium to high, depending on what was removed |
| Android has less than 10% free storage | Delete or move media, uninstall unused apps and clear caches | Deleting files is irreversible without a backup; clearing cache is low risk | High if storage headroom is restored |
| Pressure remains high during ordinary work and memory is upgradeable | Verify the model, slots, generation and capacity ceiling, then compare a compatible DDR4 or DDR5 DIMM/SO-DIMM kit | Hardware installation requires a backup and compatibility check; buying the wrong generation will not work | High when the workload genuinely exceeds installed capacity |
| Windows stop codes, corruption or crashes in multiple apps | Run memory diagnostics, check drivers and crash dumps, and seek hardware service if failures persist | Diagnostics are low risk; opening a device or replacing parts carries physical and warranty risks | Depends on whether the cause is defective RAM, a driver or another component |
When more RAM is the right answer
Consider an upgrade only after measuring normal workloads and reducing avoidable background demand. More RAM helps when your applications legitimately need more working space and the device spends substantial time compressing or swapping. It will not repair a leaking app, a defective memory module, a bad driver or an Android phone whose storage is nearly full.
- Identify the exact computer model and revision.
- Confirm whether memory is user-upgradeable; many thin laptops and modern Macs have soldered memory.
- Check whether the device uses DDR4 or DDR5, and whether it requires full-size DIMMs or laptop SO-DIMMs.
- Verify the number of slots, maximum capacity, supported speed and whether modules must be installed as a matched pair.
- Back up files, follow the manufacturer’s electrostatic-discharge procedure and confirm that the kit is returnable if compatibility information was wrong.
After installation, verify the new capacity in Windows Task Manager, macOS System Information or the computer’s firmware setup. Run the same workload that previously caused pressure and check whether swapping and crashes actually decline.

Habits that prevent memory-related crashes
- Restart after major OS, driver or app updates and after a process has been terminated repeatedly.
- Keep browsers, plug-ins, creative tools and development environments current; old extensions are common sources of runaway usage.
- Do not run several heavy workloads at once when the device has limited RAM. Close projects and virtual machines you are not using.
- Keep adequate free storage so paging, temporary files and Android updates have room to work.
- Record the app name, version, operating-system version, time to failure and exact error message before reporting a crash.
- Avoid registry cleaners, “RAM boosters” and indiscriminate cache deletion. They can hide evidence, add background processes or delete useful data without fixing the underlying cause.
A practical decision sequence
- Reproduce and observe: measure memory pressure, swap or paging, free storage and the largest processes while the slowdown occurs.
- Classify the bottleneck: decide whether it is sustained RAM pressure, a single growing process, Android storage pressure or a crash that points to drivers or hardware.
- Apply the least destructive fix: close unused work, disable an unnecessary startup item, update the affected app or clear an Android cache.
- Retest the same workload: change one variable so you can tell which intervention helped.
- Escalate when evidence demands it: investigate a leak with logging, use platform diagnostics for stop codes, test safe mode on Android, or verify upgradeability before purchasing RAM.
This sequence prevents a common mistake: treating every high memory reading as proof that the device needs an upgrade. Measurement distinguishes reclaimable cache, excessive background activity, an application defect, storage exhaustion and failing hardware—problems that require different solutions.
