The most practical way to curb online impulse purchases is to remove buying cues, make checkout less automatic, and insert a waiting period for nonessential items. Start by turning off promotional, recommendation, and price-alert messages while keeping order and delivery notices you rely on. Then review saved cards, addresses, fast-checkout preferences, and personalization controls in each shopping account. Finally, apply a personal pause—such as 25 hours—before completing discretionary purchases. These steps create friction, but no setting guarantees that you will stop impulse buying, and delivery-speed changes have not been established as an effective intervention.
What account settings can—and cannot—change
Shopping and delivery accounts influence three moments in an online purchase:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Before you shop: alerts, deal emails, recommendations, and price-drop prompts can bring products to your attention.
- At checkout: saved payment details, shipping addresses, and fast-checkout options reduce the number of decisions and clicks required to buy.
- After ordering: delivery and order-status notices provide useful information but can also be mixed with marketing messages.
Settings can reduce exposure to cues or add a small obstacle before payment. They do not remove every recommendation surface, and the available controls differ by service, country, device, and app version. Treat the following as a review process rather than a universal menu path. If a label is missing, use the service’s current help page or settings search instead of assuming the feature exists.

A quick plan for changing your accounts
| Intervention | What to review | What you may lose | Evidence and availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reduce cues | Promotional emails, deal alerts, recommendation notifications, and price-drop alerts | Some discounts or product suggestions; order and delivery messages can often remain | Controls are common but not identical across services; selective notification management is supported by official help for Shop and Google Shopping. |
| Add checkout effort | Saved cards, shipping addresses, one-click or other fast-checkout preferences | Faster checkout and convenience on trusted purchases | Some accounts expose these controls; others do not. Do not assume a universal switch. |
| Reduce tailoring | Personalization, recently viewed products, recommendation, and advertising preferences | More relevant suggestions and remembered shopping context | Personalization controls may reduce some prompts, not every recommendation surface. |
| Add time | A personal waiting rule for nonessential items | Immediate purchase of a wanted item; a sale may expire | A 25-hour delay lowered urge and purchase intent in one online experiment, not in every situation. |
| Preserve utility | Keep order confirmations, shipment tracking, and delivery updates | Little or no loss of logistical information | Separate transactional and marketing categories are available in some services, not universally. |
1. Turn down promotional and price-related alerts
Separate shopping prompts from transaction notices
Begin with a notification inventory. Promotional messages invite a purchase: “sale,” “deal,” “recommended for you,” “back in stock,” and price-drop alerts are examples. Transactional messages report something you already ordered: payment confirmation, dispatch, delivery window, delay, or return status.
Disable the first group before touching the second. If an account offers separate switches, leave delivery and order-status notices on. If it provides only one broad category, consider keeping email confirmations and using a device-level mute for marketing messages, or route promotional mail to a separate folder. The goal is fewer buying cues without losing the information needed to receive or return an order.
Review Shop account controls
Shop Help’s account guidance says users can manage account and privacy settings, saved credit cards and shipping addresses, Shop Pay enrollment, notifications, and personalization from the Shop app or shop.com. Because the page is general guidance rather than a promise that every control appears for every user, use this sequence:
- Open your Shop profile or account settings in the app or on shop.com.
- Open notification settings and identify promotional, recommendation, and price-related categories.
- Turn off the categories that create shopping prompts; leave order or delivery categories enabled if you use them.
- Open privacy or personalization settings and reduce tailored shopping prompts where the available controls match your goal.
- Review saved cards and addresses separately so that notification changes do not get mistaken for checkout changes.
- If you want an additional checkout step, review the option to opt out of Shop Pay, then confirm what changes on your next checkout.
Record the date of the change or take a screenshot of the confirmation screen. Apps can add new notification categories after an update, so repeat this review when a new device or account is added.
Reduce Google Shopping price prompts
Google’s price-tracking help page explains that you can unsubscribe from an alert email for a product and turn off Shopping notifications or related email settings. For each tracked product, use the unsubscribe control in the alert email if you no longer want that prompt. Then review Shopping notifications and email settings so you can keep any categories that are useful and remove deal-oriented messages.
Canceling a price alert does not necessarily remove recommendations shown elsewhere in a search or shopping interface. Treat it as one cue reduction, not a global recommendation switch.

2. Make checkout deliberately less automatic
Remove saved payment details when convenience is the trigger
A stored card turns a purchase into a short sequence: select an item, confirm the address, and authorize payment. If that speed is part of your problem, open the account’s payment settings and remove cards you do not need stored. Keep a payment method only where the convenience has a clear purpose, such as recurring bills you intentionally authorized.
Before deleting a card, check for subscriptions, pending refunds, or an order that has not shipped. Removing a card from a wallet may not cancel a merchant subscription, and it may not change a payment method already attached to an order. Use the service’s billing or order-help instructions for those separate situations.
Delete or edit stored shipping addresses
Stored addresses also reduce deliberation. In account settings, remove old addresses and leave only the address you actively use, if the service allows it. An address edit can affect delivery estimates and tax calculations, so verify the selected address before placing an intentional order.
Review fast-checkout preferences without assuming an off switch
Some services provide one-click or accelerated checkout preferences; others only let you manage the underlying card or address. If a fast-checkout setting exists, read its description carefully and disable or limit it if the added confirmation step helps you. Do not assume that every account includes a universal “turn off one-click” control. A service may identify fast-checkout settings while exposing different options by region, device, or account type.
After changing a preference, perform a harmless check: add a low-cost item you already intend to buy, proceed until the final review screen, and confirm whether payment now requires an additional step. Remove the item without ordering if you do not need it.
3. Reduce personalization without expecting a blank shopping screen
Personalization settings can influence recommendations based on browsing, purchases, or saved interests. Turning them down may reduce some tailored prompts, but it will not remove every product display. Search results, category pages, advertisements, and recommendations generated from the current session can still appear.

Use the account’s privacy, advertising, or personalization area to switch off the categories that are clearly optional. Also clear or pause “recently viewed” information when that control is offered; otherwise, a product you inspected once may continue appearing as a reminder. Clearing history can make the account less convenient, so decide whether reducing cues is worth losing remembered items or faster discovery.
Personalization changes are separate from notification changes. A person can receive fewer emails yet still see recommendations in the app, or mute app alerts while promotional email continues. Review each channel—email, push notifications, text messages, and on-site or in-app surfaces—individually.
4. Add a waiting rule before buying
Choose a rule you can apply consistently
Account changes work best when paired with a decision rule. For nonessential purchases, put the item on a list or in a cart and set a time at which you will reconsider. A simple rule is “wait until tomorrow”; a stricter version is a 25-hour delay. Exclude necessities with a genuine deadline, such as medication or a required replacement, and define “nonessential” before you are looking at a sale.
- Label the item as essential, planned, or discretionary.
- For a discretionary item, note the price, intended use, and the date and time the waiting period ends.
- During the pause, do not use a price alert or recommendation message as a reason to restart the clock.
- At the review time, ask whether you still want the item, have a specific use for it, and can pay without compromising bills or savings.
- If you still want it, complete checkout deliberately; otherwise remove it from the cart or list.
What the 25-hour finding means
A University of Michigan dissertation, “Impulse Buying: Designing for Self-Control,” reports that a 25-hour delay lowered felt urge to buy impulsively and purchase intent in its online experiment. That is a specific experimental result, not proof that 25 hours is the ideal interval for everyone or that the same delay will work for every product, price, or emotional state.
The broader evidence remains limited. An IBM Research publication, “Wait, let’s think about your purchase again,” describes an online survey of 118 consumers in their twenties. That sample can inform questions about self-control strategies, but it is not a population-wide estimate of impulse buying or a guarantee that one intervention works across age groups.
5. Treat delivery settings as logistics, not a proven spending cure
Changing delivery speed, selecting a later window, or consolidating shipments may fit your schedule or reduce the number of packages arriving. The evidence reviewed here does not establish that slower, scheduled, or consolidated delivery reduces impulse purchases. Do not add a delivery delay on the assumption that it has a proven behavioral effect.

You can still preserve useful delivery information while cutting shopping prompts. Keep shipment tracking, delivery-window changes, delay notices, and return deadlines when they help you manage orders. Turn off marketing or deal notices separately where the account offers that distinction. If the service combines all messages, choose the least disruptive channel—for example, retain email tracking while muting promotional push notifications—provided the account gives you that choice.

| Question | Reduce cues | Add checkout effort | Add a waiting period | Change delivery timing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Setup effort | Usually a short notification review across channels | Requires checking cards, addresses, and fast-checkout options | Requires a written rule and a reminder or list | Depends on the service’s available delivery choices |
| Useful information interrupted | Potentially deal and recommendation messages; transactional notices can sometimes remain | Little information loss, but checkout is slower | No account information needs to be lost | May change convenience or delivery certainty |
| Does the platform need a dedicated control? | Yes, for selective categories; otherwise use channel-level controls | Yes, if you want to alter fast checkout directly | No; it can be a personal rule | Yes, and availability varies |
| What evidence supports it? | Reasonable cue-reduction strategy; no guarantee of behavior change | Added friction is plausible, but specific account changes are not proven universally | Postponement evidence is suggestive but inconclusive; one experiment reported a 25-hour effect | No evidence here that it reduces impulse buying |
A repeatable account-audit checklist
- List every shopping account, marketplace app, price tracker, and delivery service you use.
- For each account, inspect email, push, text, and in-app notification categories.
- Disable promotional, recommendation, and deal alerts first.
- Keep order confirmations, shipping updates, delivery changes, and return information when needed.
- Review saved cards and remove payment methods that make unplanned checkout too easy.
- Delete obsolete addresses and check whether a fast-checkout preference can be limited.
- Review personalization, advertising, recently viewed, and recommendation controls.
- Set a waiting rule for discretionary purchases and write the end time down.
- Recheck settings after installing a new app, adding a device, or changing an account.
Common problems and fixes
You still see products after turning off emails
Email controls affect email. In-app recommendations, search results, browser notifications, and advertisements may use separate settings. Review each channel and reduce personalization or recently viewed data where those controls exist.
You muted everything and missed a delivery
Restore transactional categories or switch tracking to a channel you check reliably. Notification labels differ by service, so test the setting with an existing order rather than assuming “marketing” and “delivery” are separated.
The payment card keeps appearing
A card may be stored in more than one place: the retailer account, a mobile wallet, a browser autofill profile, or a payment service. Remove it from the location that supplies the checkout field, while checking for subscriptions and pending refunds first.
A sale expires during the waiting period
An expiring discount is a cost of adding time, not evidence that the rule failed. If the item is genuinely planned, record the regular price and the reason you need it. If the only reason to buy is the countdown, treat that pressure as a cue to pause.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

The account has no relevant setting
Use the controls that do exist: unsubscribe from individual alerts, mute the app at the device level, remove saved payment details, and apply the waiting rule manually. Availability can change by region, edition, device, and app version, so consult the service’s current help center before concluding that a control is absent.

What research says about warnings and postponement
Not every intervention produces the same response. A 2021 Journal of Business Research paper by Haichuan Zhao, Xuehua Wang, and Lan Jiang reports five studies of online-cart warning pop-ups. Its findings describe polarized reactions in liking and purchase intention, so a warning cannot be presented as a universally effective deterrent. The paper is available at doi.org/10.1016%2Fj.jbusres.2020.10.067.
Taken together, these sources support testing a pause and reducing cues, not promising a fixed success rate. They also do not establish that account-level delivery controls treat compulsive buying or replace professional help. If spending feels uncontrollable, causes debt, or is connected to distress, consider discussing it with a qualified financial counselor or mental-health professional in addition to changing account settings.
Build the system around your actual trigger
If notifications start the shopping session, prioritize cue reduction. If the problem is completing checkout in seconds, remove stored payment details or limit fast checkout. If you buy during stress or late at night, make the waiting rule the primary barrier and keep the account changes as backup. If you need reliable delivery information, preserve transactional notices and trim only marketing categories.

The bottom line
Use shopping-account settings to remove promotional cues, reduce personalization where possible, and make payment less automatic; keep order and delivery updates that serve a real logistical purpose. Add a written waiting rule for nonessential purchases, with 25 hours as a testable starting point rather than a universal prescription. Delivery-speed changes have not been shown here to reduce impulse buying, and no setting guarantees self-control. The most useful setup is the one that adds a deliberate pause while preserving the transaction information you genuinely need.
