You can redeem an AT1-exposed debt mutual fund by submitting a redemption request through its asset-management company (AMC), registrar or investment platform. You receive the applicable net asset value (NAV), minus any exit load and other disclosed charges. You can also switch to another plan or scheme, but the source-side switch is treated as a redemption for NAV cut-off purposes and may carry the same exit load and tax consequences as a sale. Because “AT1 bond mutual fund” is not a unique scheme name, the exact cost cannot be stated without the AMC, scheme name, plan, option and ISIN.
What happens when you redeem or switch an AT1 fund?
A redemption cancels some or all of your units and pays cash to your registered bank account (or through the settlement route specified for your account). The amount is based on the applicable NAV, not necessarily the NAV visible when you press “submit”. An exit load is deducted if the scheme’s current documents impose one for the units and holding period being redeemed.

The Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) states the calculation as Redemption Price = Applicable NAV × (1 − Exit Load). In practice, calculate the gross value first—units multiplied by the applicable NAV—then apply the load and any other charge shown in the scheme or platform statement.
A switch transfers value out of one mutual-fund plan or scheme and into another. The source transaction is a switch-out, while the destination transaction is a purchase. AMFI treats a switch-out application as a redemption application when determining the applicable-NAV cut-off. A scheme may therefore charge its redemption exit load on the switch-out, and the destination scheme may have its own purchase rules, minimums or charges.

Neither “AT1” nor “debt fund” by itself tells you the exit-load percentage, lock-in, free-redemption allowance, settlement period or tax result. Those details come from the latest scheme information document (SID), key information memorandum (KIM), account statement and the tax rules applicable to your holding.
Information to collect before giving an instruction
Have these details in front of you before asking the AMC, registrar or platform for a cost estimate:
- AMC and complete scheme name: similar-sounding funds can have different load structures.
- Plan: direct and regular plans are separate plans and may have different expense ratios or operational records.
- Option: growth and income or payout options can have different folio records and transaction handling.
- ISIN and folio or account number: an ISIN removes ambiguity where several share classes exist.
- Units and acquisition lots: record purchase, switch-in and reinvestment dates separately.
- Intended transaction: full redemption, partial redemption, same-scheme plan change, same-AMC switch or move to another fund house.
- Destination fund, if switching: confirm that it accepts the amount, investor category and chosen plan or option.
How to redeem an AT1 bond mutual fund
1. Open the current SID and KIM
Use the documents for the exact plan and option you own, rather than a general factsheet or an old account statement. Locate the sections headed exit load, redemption, switch, minimum application or redemption amount, settlement and transaction charges. Note whether the load is based on each purchase lot, a first-in-first-out convention, a holding period, a percentage of units, or a rupee amount.
Also look for a free-redemption allowance, a stepped load that declines over time, a minimum balance requirement and any restriction on very large or frequent withdrawals. If a document is dated, confirm that it is the latest version available from the AMC or its registrar.
2. Estimate the gross value
Multiply the units you plan to redeem by the applicable NAV. The NAV that applies depends on the scheme’s cut-off, receipt and realization rules. A request entered during a dealing day can receive a different NAV if the required conditions are not met or if money is realized after the relevant cut-off.
3. Apply the exit load and disclosed charges
Use the load in the current SID/KIM for the relevant acquisition lot. Then check your platform or account statement for a separately disclosed transaction charge, stamp duty, brokerage, demat charge or applicable goods and services tax (GST). Do not assume that a zero exit load means the transaction has no other cost.

4. Submit through the channel holding your units
Submit the request through the AMC’s investor portal, its registrar, an authorised transaction channel or the platform where the folio is serviced. Select the exact folio, plan and option. For a partial redemption, enter either units or a rupee amount and check the resulting minimum balance before confirming.

5. Save the evidence
Retain the acknowledgement, transaction reference, units requested, applicable NAV, load calculation, bank-credit advice and updated account statement. These records establish the transfer date, consideration and costs for your tax return and help resolve a rejected or delayed instruction.
How to switch to another mutual fund
Choose the type of switch
- Within the same scheme: for example, changing from one plan or option to another where the scheme permits it. The source may still be treated as a redemption and the destination as a purchase.
- To another scheme of the same AMC: the destination is a separate fund with its own objective, risk, minimum and expense structure.
- To a different fund house: this normally requires a redemption from the source and a purchase in the destination, with two separate operational records.
Check the destination before submitting
Read the destination scheme’s current documents for eligibility, minimum initial and additional investment, cut-off, payment method, plan and option availability, exit load and any restrictions on accepting switch-in transactions. A destination fund can reject or delay a request even when the source fund accepts the switch.
Submit the switch before the relevant cut-off
AMFI says a switch-out application is treated as a redemption application for applicable-NAV cut-off purposes. The destination purchase can have separate timing and realization requirements. Ask the servicing channel how it handles a request received near a cut-off, on a non-business day or when the source and destination schemes have different business-day calendars.
Confirm both legs
After processing, verify the number of source units cancelled, the NAV and load used, the amount invested in the destination, the destination NAV and the number of units allotted. A switch is not complete merely because the source units disappear from the screen.
Exit load: the most common direct cost
SEBI describes an exit load as a fee imposed when investors redeem mutual-fund units before a predefined period. Each scheme sets its own period and rate. One AT1-exposed debt fund may have no load for a particular lot while another may use a time-based or stepped schedule.
Rank #3
Read the load table for the transaction you are making. Important variations include:
- Holding-period bands: a higher rate may apply to recent purchases and fall after specified periods.
- Lot-by-lot treatment: a partial redemption can draw from different acquisition lots, producing different loads.
- Free limits: the scheme may permit a stated number of units or a percentage of holdings to be redeemed without load during a period.
- Minimums and residual balance: a request below the minimum or one that leaves too little may be rejected or treated as a full redemption.
- Switch treatment: scheme documents can apply the same exit load to switch-outs as to cash redemptions.
Do not use an exit-load percentage quoted for another year, plan or fund as a proxy. Ask for a written calculation based on your folio and acquisition lots if the document is unclear.
How NAV and market movement affect the amount you receive
The fund’s NAV changes as the value of its portfolio, cash and liabilities change. A displayed indicative value is not a guaranteed payout. The final amount uses the applicable NAV under the scheme’s cut-off and realization rules, so it can differ from the value shown when the request was entered.
For an AT1-exposed debt fund, movements in the value or liquidity of securities in the portfolio can affect NAV between the time you decide to transact and the time the applicable NAV is struck. This is separate from the exit load: even a transaction with no load can produce a higher or lower rupee amount because the NAV changed.
Use this calculation only as an estimate:
Estimated net proceeds = units redeemed × applicable NAV × (1 − exit-load rate) − separately disclosed charges
The expression does not predict the NAV or include a tax liability. Confirm the final figures on the contract note or account statement.

Illustrative calculation
Suppose an investor requests redemption of 10,000 units. If the applicable NAV is ₹12.50 and the scheme’s load for those units is 1%, the gross value is ₹125,000. Applying AMFI’s formula gives ₹123,750 before any separately disclosed charge or tax effect:
₹125,000 × (1 − 0.01) = ₹123,750
This is an illustration, not a quotation for any particular AT1 fund. Replace every input with the figures in your current SID/KIM and transaction confirmation.
Tax when you redeem or switch
Why a switch can be taxable
A switch-out is not automatically tax-free. The source-side cancellation is treated as a redemption application for NAV processing and generally represents a transfer of the source units. The fact that the proceeds are immediately invested in another fund does not, by itself, remove the need to calculate a capital gain or loss.
Section 50AA and acquisition dates
Section 50AA of the Income-tax Act applies statutory short-term-gain treatment to units of a specified mutual fund acquired on or after 1 April 2023. For a qualifying transfer, redemption or maturity, the consideration less acquisition cost and eligible transfer expenditure is deemed to be capital gain from a short-term capital asset. The Income Tax Department’s guidance states that the resulting gain is taxed at the assessee’s applicable rate.
The definition of a specified mutual fund is important. From 1 April 2026, the amended definition generally covers a mutual fund that invests more than 65% of total proceeds in debt and money-market instruments, or a fund that invests at least 65% in units of such a fund. Whether your AT1-exposed scheme meets the definition, and which rule applies for the relevant assessment year, must be checked against its portfolio classification and the law in force for that year.

Other costs to check before leaving
| Cost or adjustment | When it may arise | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Exit load | Redemption or switch-out within the scheme’s specified period, or where the load table otherwise applies | Current SID/KIM, acquisition lot, free limit and stepped rate |
| NAV movement | Any transaction, because the applicable NAV may differ from the displayed or estimated value | Cut-off, receipt and realization rules and the NAV on the contract note |
| Transaction charge | Where the servicing platform or scheme discloses one | Order screen, platform tariff and account statement |
| Stamp duty | Where the applicable transaction is subject to it | Statement line item and current statutory treatment |
| Brokerage or demat charge | Where units are held or transacted through a demat account or intermediary that levies it | Depository or intermediary tariff and contract note |
| GST | Where a disclosed service or transaction charge attracts GST | Tax line on the invoice or statement |
| Destination-fund purchase cost | On a switch into another scheme, if its documents or channel impose a charge or minimum | Destination SID/KIM, application terms and allotment statement |
Not every cost applies to every investor. The phrase “AT1 bond mutual fund” is insufficient to infer any particular charge.
Redeeming versus switching: which route fits?
| Decision point | Redeem to cash | Switch to another fund |
|---|---|---|
| Immediate liquidity | Creates a cash payout after processing and settlement. | Does not normally create cash for you; value moves into the destination purchase. |
| Source exit load | Applies if the source load table covers the units. | Can apply because the source switch-out may be treated like a redemption. |
| NAV and timing | Uses the applicable source-fund NAV under its cut-off and realization rules. | Source switch-out follows redemption cut-off treatment; destination allotment has its own rules. |
| Tax realization | Redemption can create a gain or loss. | The source-side switch can also be a taxable transfer; reinvestment does not automatically defer tax. |
| Future portfolio exposure | Leaves you in cash or another investment you choose later. | Moves exposure immediately to the destination fund’s assets, risks and costs. |
| Destination expense ratio and load | None unless you later purchase another fund. | Check the destination plan’s expense ratio, exit load, minimums and purchase conditions. |
| Operational convenience | One source-fund instruction and bank settlement. | One linked instruction, but you must confirm both source cancellation and destination allotment. |
Choose redemption when you need liquidity or want to decide on a new investment separately. Choose a switch only after checking that the destination is suitable and that its timing, tax and cost consequences are acceptable.
Common failure points and how to resolve them
The platform shows a different exit load
Compare the platform display with the latest scheme document and the acquisition lot dates. Ask the AMC or registrar for the load calculation in writing. Do not cancel and resubmit repeatedly without understanding whether each request changes the applicable lot or NAV date.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe proceeds are lower than the value shown before submission
Check the applicable NAV date, NAV itself, exit load, units actually redeemed and every separate charge line. The pre-submission figure may have been indicative rather than final.
A switch is rejected
Check destination eligibility, minimum amount, minimum residual balance, plan and option, bank or folio status, signatures and whether the source or destination was closed for transactions on that date. Correct the specific deficiency with the servicing channel rather than assuming the request was processed.
The bank credit or destination units are delayed
Review the acknowledgement and published settlement rules, then confirm whether the request was received before the relevant cut-off and whether payment or account verification was complete. Escalate with the transaction reference if the stated processing period has passed.
Tax information does not match your records
Reconcile each acquisition and redemption lot with the capital-gain statement. Include exit load and eligible transfer expenditure only as permitted by the applicable rules, and obtain professional advice when Section 50AA classification or your investor status is uncertain.

What you need for an exact rupee estimate
An adviser or servicing desk can calculate a meaningful estimate only after you provide the exact AMC and scheme, direct or regular plan, growth or income option, ISIN, units or amount to be redeemed, acquisition dates and the proposed transaction date. The desk must then use the current SID/KIM, the applicable NAV and your lot-level load status. Without those inputs, any precise exit-load percentage or payout would be speculative.
Bottom line
Redeem or switch by identifying the exact scheme, checking its current documents and submitting through the channel that services your units. Expect the final amount to depend on the applicable NAV, any scheme-defined exit load and other disclosed charges. Treat a switch-out as a potential redemption for both timing and tax analysis, and apply Section 50AA and the post-1 April 2026 specified-fund definition only after confirming that they cover your units and assessment year.
