You can usually recover a crypto wallet on a replacement phone if you still have its Secret Recovery Phrase (seed phrase), an account-specific private key, or the identity-based recovery method used by an embedded or smart wallet. First lock or erase the missing phone and secure related accounts. Then identify whether the wallet is self-custody, embedded or smart, or an exchange account: each model has a different recovery path. If a thief may have seen your phrase or unlocked the wallet, do not simply restore it—create a new wallet and move the assets.
Act before trying to restore the wallet
A lost phone is both a device problem and an account-security problem. Contain access first, using a device you trust, so a thief cannot use an unlocked session, your email, or your mobile number to reach the wallet.

- Lock or erase the phone. Use Apple Find My for an iPhone or Google’s device-management tools for an Android phone. If the device cannot be recovered safely, issue a remote erase when the service allows it.
- End the phone’s sessions. Google recommends signing out of the lost or stolen phone and changing the Google Account password. Apply the equivalent session-revocation controls to your Apple Account, email, password manager, exchange account, and any wallet account that offers them.
- Recover your mobile number. Ask your carrier to transfer the number to a replacement SIM or eSIM if the number is needed for account verification. Ask the carrier to add or confirm an account PIN to reduce the chance of an unauthorized SIM change.
- Replace lost two-step verification. Use the service’s documented recovery method for an authenticator app, security key, backup code, or SMS number. Do not disable security controls through an unsolicited support link.
- Use only official channels. Download a wallet or exchange app from its official website or the official Apple or Google app store listing. Type the address yourself or use a saved, verified bookmark rather than a link in a message.
Do not enter a seed phrase while the missing phone is still active, or on a replacement device whose operating system, browser, or wallet download you cannot verify.

| Custody model | Where control resides | Recovery material | If the phone is merely lost or reset | If the phrase or passcode may be exposed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Self-custody wallet | You control the private keys; the provider does not hold a copy. | Secret Recovery Phrase (seed or mnemonic), and sometimes a separately imported private key. | Install the same wallet on a clean phone and restore or import the wallet. | Generate a completely new wallet on a secure device and transfer assets to it. |
| Embedded or smart wallet | The wallet encrypts or derives recovery material through an identity account, password, passkey, or cloud backup. | The supported email, Google, Apple, or Telegram sign-in; a passkey; a wallet password; and, for some products, an optional recovery phrase. | Follow that provider’s exact sign-in and restore flow on the replacement device. | Revoke compromised access and use the provider’s documented signer or wallet-rotation process; move assets if the wallet is no longer trustworthy. |
| Centralized exchange account | The exchange controls the account and the keys for assets held on its platform. | Exchange login, identity checks, and replacement two-step-verification methods—not a self-custody seed phrase. | Recover the exchange account through its official account-recovery process. | Change the password, revoke sessions, replace 2FA, and contact the exchange through its verified support route. |
If you used more than one arrangement, handle each separately. For example, an exchange balance is recovered through the exchange account, while a browser wallet you connected to that exchange is restored with its own phrase.
Restore a self-custody wallet on a replacement phone
For a self-custody wallet, the blockchain does not live inside the phone. The phone stores an app and, usually, an encrypted copy of key material. Your recovery phrase recreates the same accounts and addresses on another device; a factory reset does not transfer or delete on-chain assets.
What you need
- The original Secret Recovery Phrase, entered in the original order and with the wallet’s exact spelling and word list.
- The private key for any account that was imported separately rather than derived from that phrase.
- The wallet’s password if the provider requires one after an identity-based restore, and access to any supported identity account for a login-created wallet.
- A clean replacement phone with current operating-system updates and screen-lock protection.
Restoration procedure
- Prepare the replacement phone. Update iOS or Android, enable a strong passcode or biometric lock, and install no wallet software until you have confirmed the official publisher and app listing.
- Install the wallet from its official source. Do not use an advertisement, a direct message, or a search result whose domain or publisher you have not independently checked.
- Choose the existing-wallet option. In the initial setup screen, select the label used by that wallet, such as Import existing wallet, Restore wallet, or Use Secret Recovery Phrase. Do not choose Create new wallet unless you intentionally want a separate wallet.
- Enter the phrase offline and privately. Type it only into the genuine wallet application. Never put it into a website, form, cloud note, screen-share, or chat. The wallet should display the accounts derived from the phrase before you approve setup.
- Restore separately imported accounts. If an account was added with an individual private key, import that key through the wallet’s account-import function. A seed phrase will not recreate an account that was never derived from it.
- Re-add networks and tokens. Custom networks, token lists, address labels, and display settings may not return automatically. Add them only from documentation you trust, and verify contract addresses before importing a token.
- Verify addresses before using funds. Compare the restored receiving address with a previously saved address or a trusted transaction record. Send a small test amount only when you have independently checked the destination and network.
- Re-establish device security. Turn on the wallet’s app lock, remove the old phone from connected-device lists where offered, and update passwords that may have been visible on the old device.
Example: restoring MetaMask
MetaMask’s official instructions use a fresh installation and the Secret Recovery Phrase to restore a wallet. A wallet created through MetaMask’s supported Google, Apple, or Telegram login flow instead requires the same identity sign-in and the required wallet password. After either route, additional networks, tokens, and accounts may need to be added manually. A phone reset removes the local MetaMask installation and its settings; it does not move the blockchain assets to another address.

Embedded and smart wallets can hide key management behind a familiar account or passkey. Do not assume that a conventional 12- or 24-word phrase exists, and do not try to force a seed-phrase import if the provider’s design uses a different recovery method.

Identity-based embedded wallets
Kraken explains that an embedded wallet can be restored on a secure replacement device by signing in with the same email, Google, Apple, or passkey method used when it was created. Complete the provider’s in-app verification, recreate any wallet password it requests, and check that the displayed addresses match your records. If the identity account itself is inaccessible, recover that account first; a new email address will generally create a different wallet rather than reveal the old one.
Smart wallets with cloud-backed passkeys
Coinbase says a smart wallet may use a cloud-backed passkey and an optional recovery phrase. The phrase can add a new signer after a device or passkey is lost. Follow the provider’s current flow to restore the passkey or add a signer, then review existing signers and remove any device or credential you no longer trust. A cloud backup is not permission to paste the phrase into a third-party “recovery” page.
When the identity account may be compromised
Change the identity account password from a trusted device, sign out old sessions, review passkeys and security keys, and replace recovery methods that were stored on the missing phone. If the provider shows that an unknown signer or session can still approve transactions, treat the wallet as compromised and migrate assets to a new wallet after securing the account.

Recover crypto held on an exchange
Coins held by a centralized exchange are accessed through the exchange account, not by importing the exchange password or email into a self-custody wallet. Ethereum.org explains that exchanges control accounts on their platforms and may be able to help with password or account recovery.

- Open the exchange’s official website or app directly and select its account-recovery or lost-device process.
- Complete the requested identity verification. Use the exchange’s published support channel if automated recovery fails; never accept a support number or link supplied in a direct message.
- Change the account password after access is restored, then review active sessions, API keys, withdrawal addresses, and security notifications.
- Re-enroll two-step verification with a new authenticator, security key, backup code, or recovered mobile number. Revoke the old method rather than leaving it active.
- Check balances and recent withdrawals before making any transfer. If you see an unauthorized transaction, preserve the transaction ID and contact the exchange immediately through its official process.
An exchange recovery restores the exchange account. It does not restore a separate self-custody wallet that you previously connected to the exchange.
What to do if theft may have exposed the wallet
Assume compromise if the thief could learn the phone passcode, unlock the wallet, read an unencrypted phrase, access an email or cloud account that protects an embedded wallet, or observe you entering recovery material. A remote lock is useful, but it is not proof that key material was never copied.
- On a secure device, install a genuine wallet and create a brand-new wallet with a newly generated phrase. Do not use a phrase that was stored on, photographed by, or entered into the potentially exposed phone.
- Write the new phrase offline and verify every word before storing it. Do not photograph it or place it in ordinary cloud storage.
- Secure the new wallet and the accounts that control it before transferring anything.
- Transfer assets from the old wallet to the new addresses, checking the network and complete destination address on a trusted screen. If the old wallet is actively draining, prioritize the assets most at risk and seek the wallet provider’s documented incident guidance.
- After the transfer, stop signing transactions from the old wallet. Label it as compromised rather than deleting evidence of its addresses and transaction history.
Creating a new wallet is necessary when the recovery material may be exposed; simply reinstalling the old wallet reproduces the same vulnerable keys.
When the recovery phrase is missing
A self-custody provider cannot manufacture a missing Secret Recovery Phrase. MetaMask states, “MetaMask cannot recover your wallet for you.” Ethereum.org states, “No one, including ethereum.org, can reset your password or restore access to a self-custody wallet.” Whoever controls the phrase or the account-specific private key controls the wallet.

Search only places you deliberately used for your own backup: a written record in a secure location, a metal backup, or a properly protected backup system. Do not test random word combinations, upload a partial phrase, or send a photograph to anyone. A person offering paid seed-phrase recovery is a scam risk; possession of even part of a phrase can enable theft.
If you still have a wallet unlocked on another trusted device, move the assets to a newly generated wallet immediately and record the new phrase correctly. If no device is unlocked and no valid phrase or private key exists, there may be no technical recovery route for a self-custody wallet.
Scams that target lost-phone victims
- Fake support: legitimate support will not ask you to disclose a Secret Recovery Phrase, private key, wallet password, exchange password, backup code, or one-time code. MetaMask says it will never ask for the Secret Recovery Phrase.
- Recovery websites: a page claiming to “validate” or “synchronize” your phrase can capture it. Close the page and start from the provider’s official app or typed domain.
- Impersonation messages: ignore direct messages promising urgent recovery, refunds, or a special contact. Verify support details independently from the provider’s official help center.
- Address substitution: malware or clipboard manipulation can replace a copied address. Compare the full address on the sending and receiving screens, not just its first and last characters.
- Pressure to act: scammers use deadlines and threats of account closure. Pause, secure the phone and identity accounts, and verify every step through a known channel.
Troubleshoot a restore that does not show the expected funds
| Symptom | Likely explanation | Safe next check |
|---|---|---|
| The wallet opens but shows a new empty address. | You selected wallet creation instead of restoration, entered a phrase incorrectly, or used a different phrase. | Sign out or remove the new wallet, restart the official restore flow, and compare each phrase word and its order with your offline record. |
| Some accounts are missing. | Those accounts may use a different derivation path or may have been imported with individual private keys. | Use the wallet’s documented account-discovery and import functions. Do not paste the phrase into a third-party tool. |
| The address is correct but tokens are invisible. | The network or token display list was not restored. | Select the correct network and add the token using a verified contract address; confirm the balance on a trusted block explorer. |
| An embedded wallet will not sign in. | The wrong identity account, passkey, or wallet password was used, or the identity account itself is locked. | Recover the original email, Google, Apple, or passkey account first and then repeat the provider’s exact flow. |
| An exchange login is blocked after the phone loss. | The old 2FA method is still required. | Use the exchange’s lost-device and identity-verification process, then enroll a replacement method and revoke the old one. |
| A known address shows outgoing transactions you did not approve. | The phrase, private key, phone passcode, or signer may have been exposed. | Generate a new wallet on a secure device and transfer remaining assets; preserve transaction records and contact the provider or exchange through official support. |
Build a recovery plan after you regain access
Protect the recovery phrase
Keep the phrase offline in a secure location and maintain a second physically separate backup if that fits your threat model. The backups should be readable, protected from fire and water, and inaccessible to visitors or online attackers. Never store the only copy on the phone that holds the wallet.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse hardware signing where appropriate
A hardware wallet can keep signing keys offline. MetaMask names Ledger and Trezor as examples of hardware wallets. It does not eliminate the need to protect the recovery phrase: anyone who obtains that phrase can generally recreate the wallet without the hardware device.
Harden the identity accounts behind embedded wallets
For Google or Apple accounts used to protect an embedded wallet, save backup codes and consider a spare hardware security key. Google lists backup codes and security keys as fallback methods. Apple recommends setting up at least two security keys so one remains available if another is lost, damaged, or stolen. Apple also documents Account Recovery Contacts who can provide a recovery code out of band.
Record the information needed for a calm restore
- Wallet and exchange names, official support addresses, and the networks you actually use.
- Which accounts were derived from the main phrase and which were imported separately.
- Public receiving addresses and transaction records, stored without private keys.
- The location of each offline backup and the procedure for replacing a lost authenticator or security key.
Investor.gov explains that a seed phrase can restore a wallet after a device or private-key problem and that self-custody makes the owner responsible for private-key security. The practical rule is simple: protect the phrase as the asset, and treat every phone as replaceable.
