You will generally need an official death certificate, proof that you are the executor or other legally recognized representative, your government photo ID, and signed instructions identifying where the assets should go. First establish whether the cryptocurrency was held at a centralized exchange or in a self-custody wallet, because the recovery paths are completely different.
Coinbase, Kraken and Binance each review these claims under their own document rules. Approval transfers control to the estate or an authorized destination; it does not make an exchange responsible for finding a missing private key or deciding who inherits under your local law.

Start by identifying where the cryptocurrency was held
A deceased person may have used several services at once. An exchange account is a custodial account: the company controls the account infrastructure and can process a legally supported transfer. A hardware wallet, paper wallet or software wallet is normally self-custody: control depends on the private key or recovery phrase, not on an exchange’s customer-support process.

- Account emails, identity-verification messages, withdrawal notices or monthly statements.
- Bank or card records showing deposits to a cryptocurrency platform.
- Tax forms, transaction exports or portfolio reports naming a platform.
- An exchange app installed on a phone or a browser password-manager entry.
- A public account identifier, such as an exchange user ID, in an estate plan or records.
Clues that point to self-custody
- A hardware device, metal backup plate, paper wallet or written recovery phrase.
- Wallet software that displays addresses but no exchange account statements.
- Transfers from an exchange to an external address shortly before death.
- Notes referring to a seed phrase, private key, passphrase or multisignature arrangement.
Do not move funds while you are still determining ownership and authority. Preserve the phone, computer, wallet device, email account and paper records in their existing state, and make a written inventory of what you found and when. Avoid changing passwords, deleting applications or sharing credentials with relatives, investigators or people who contact you unexpectedly.

Why a password is not a lawful inheritance method
Using the deceased person’s login can breach the exchange’s terms, trigger account-security controls, create a dispute among heirs and make it harder to prove the estate’s transaction history. It also does not establish that you are the lawful recipient. Exchanges normally require an authorized representative to submit documents through a dedicated process rather than allowing a family member to impersonate the account holder.
Proof of death alone is usually insufficient. The exchange needs evidence that you are entitled to act for the estate and instructions that are consistent with the probate or inheritance process in the relevant jurisdiction. A spouse, child or joint household member may still need a court appointment or another legally accepted form of authority.
Documents to assemble before contacting the exchange
Make one legible, complete claim packet. Names, dates and addresses should be consistent across documents; explain any differences, such as a maiden name, transliteration or a legal name change.

Core documents
- Official death certificate: obtain the certified or otherwise accepted version required by the exchange. A photograph of an informal memorial notice is not a substitute.
- Proof of legal authority: commonly probate, letters testamentary, letters of administration, an accepted small-estate affidavit, an affidavit for collection or another document recognized where the estate is administered.
- Your current government photo ID: use the ID of the person named as executor, administrator or other representative in the authority document.
- Signed transfer instructions: state what should be transferred, identify the destination account or estate, and sign and date the letter. Follow the exchange’s requested format and destination details.
Useful supporting material
- The deceased person’s full legal name, known email addresses, phone numbers and exchange user ID.
- Statements, transaction exports, deposit records and tax documents that help the compliance team locate the account.
- The will, trust, beneficiary or estate-plan documents, where relevant to the estate administration.
- Documentation explaining a name change, relationship to the deceased or authority of a professional representative.
- A secure record of every document submitted, the date, the channel and any case number.
Do not send a private key or recovery phrase in a claim packet. An exchange does not need a self-custody secret to verify an estate claim, and anyone asking for one is a security risk.
Step-by-step process for a centralized exchange
- Preserve records and stop discretionary activity. Gather account emails, bank records, statements and devices. Do not trade, withdraw, reset security settings or share the password while the estate’s authority is being established.
- Identify the legal representative. Confirm who has authority in the jurisdiction administering the estate. If probate has not started, ask a local probate or crypto estate lawyer whether a small-estate procedure, affidavit or court appointment is available.
- Build the exchange-specific packet. Include the death certificate, authority documents, photo ID and signed instructions, plus only the supporting records the exchange requests. Scan clearly and keep originals secure.
- Use the official submission channel. Start from the exchange’s current support site or in-app help area, not a link in an unsolicited message. Submit the deceased-client, executor or inheritance form and record the case number.
- Answer follow-up questions through the same case. Compliance teams may request a clearer certificate, certified translations, additional probate material, proof of an account relationship or a revised transfer letter. Send only what is requested and redact unrelated sensitive information when permitted.
- Wait for a written decision. Do not assume that silence means approval. Keep a log of dates, names of departments and documents supplied.
- Direct the approved transfer to the estate or authorized recipient. Verify the destination account and email character by character. Save the approval, transfer confirmation, transaction ID, valuation information and any tax forms in the estate file.
- Report and distribute the asset correctly. Follow the estate’s accounting, inheritance and tax obligations before distributing cryptocurrency to beneficiaries. Obtain jurisdiction-specific advice where the law is unclear.

Coinbase: what the executor should prepare
Coinbase’s current executor guidance calls for the official death certificate, probate or an equivalent estate document, the representative’s current government photo ID and a signed letter that identifies the destination Coinbase account and associated email. The account holder cannot currently add a beneficiary designation to an individual account. That means a will, trust, probate order or the applicable intestate rules may control the transfer, rather than a beneficiary field in the app.
Use the Executor Services form and ensure the person named in the probate material is the person whose ID is submitted. If the estate document names a law firm or co-representatives, follow the form’s instructions instead of substituting an unrelated family member.

Kraken’s March 17, 2026 guidance specifies a complete color death certificate, documentation confirming appointment as legal representative, current government-issued photo ID and a signed, dated representative letter. The compliance team may ask for more documentation. Earlier Kraken guidance also says there is no beneficiary option and suggests placing the public account ID in an estate plan so the account can be located later.
Do not confuse the public account ID with a password, authentication code or wallet private key. It can help locate the account; it does not authorize withdrawals.
Binance: appeal, claimant account and a one-to-two-month estimate
Binance’s Inheritance Appeal requires the claimant to create or use their own Binance account, identify the deceased user by email, phone number or Binance ID, and upload the requested legal materials. A dedicated team reviews the application. Binance states that completion usually takes one to two months, with longer handling possible for complex cases. That is an estimate, not a guaranteed deadline, and it does not override local probate requirements.

What happens after approval
Transfer to an estate-controlled destination
Where possible, use an account controlled by the estate or by the legally authorized recipient, not a casual personal account belonging to another relative. Confirm whose name is on the destination account, the exact email address, the assets and the network. A wrong blockchain network or mistyped address can make a transfer irreversible.
Record the value and transaction details
Save the exchange’s balance snapshot, approval notice, transfer confirmation, transaction ID, fees, asset quantities and the valuation date used in the estate’s records. Cryptocurrency prices change continuously, so the date and method used to value the holding matter. Keep any tax forms and transaction history with the estate accounting rather than relying on a screenshot.
Handle tax and distribution questions separately
The exchange verifies account authority; it does not determine your jurisdiction’s inheritance, income, capital-gains or estate-tax treatment. A crypto estate lawyer and a tax adviser can help determine the valuation date, reporting obligations, cost basis, later sale treatment and distribution among beneficiaries. Rules differ by country, state or province and can change, so do not infer a tax result from the exchange’s transfer confirmation.
If the cryptocurrency is in a hardware or other self-custody wallet
An exchange claim cannot recover a missing private key. For self-custody, the estate must locate the wallet device or backup and obtain the private key, recovery phrase and, where used, an additional passphrase. Binance’s inheritance guidance warns that encrypted or otherwise protected keys may be difficult to find and that assets can be lost permanently without access.
Preserve the wallet safely
- Do not reset, update or enter a guessed PIN into a hardware device.
- Do not photograph or upload a recovery phrase to cloud storage, email or a support ticket.
- Keep paper, metal and electronic backups under controlled physical access and document who handled them.
- Use the wallet manufacturer’s official documentation to identify the correct recovery procedure.
Use a controlled recovery plan
Because a recovery phrase gives control of the assets, involve a qualified professional who understands both estate administration and digital-asset security. Establish a written chain of custody, use a secure environment, verify receiving addresses independently and make a test transaction only when the estate’s authority and technical plan are settled. Never provide the phrase to an unsolicited “recovery agent,” exchange employee, lawyer by email or anyone promising to unlock funds for an upfront payment.

When a key is missing
Search the person’s documented storage locations, safe-deposit records, password-manager emergency access, estate inventory and instructions for multisignature wallets. If the phrase, key, passphrase or required co-signer cannot be found, there may be no technical recovery method. A court order can establish ownership or authorize an investigation, but it cannot recreate cryptographic secret material that no one possesses.

Submitting only the death certificate
Why it fails: death proves the account holder is deceased but not that the claimant can act for the estate. Correction: obtain probate, letters, a valid affidavit or another accepted authority document and submit the representative’s ID.
Using a relative’s personal account as the destination
Why it fails: the destination may not match the estate’s legal ownership or the exchange’s instructions. Correction: ask the exchange whether it requires an estate account, a specific account type or a beneficiary’s account, and document the legal basis for the destination.
Sending incomplete or inconsistent scans
Why it fails: missing pages, black-and-white copies where a color certificate is required, expired ID or mismatched names can trigger repeated requests. Correction: use complete, readable documents, explain name differences and check expiry dates before submission.
Assuming all platforms use the same process
Why it fails: forms, account requirements and review times differ. Correction: create a separate checklist and case file for each exchange.

Falling for recovery scams
Why it fails: scammers exploit public death notices and may impersonate exchange staff, lawyers or blockchain investigators. Correction: initiate contact through the exchange’s official website or app, refuse requests for seed phrases and private keys, and never send cryptocurrency to “verify” an inheritance claim.
Trying to speed up the process with unauthorized withdrawals
Why it fails: an unapproved transfer can violate account terms, compromise evidence and create a dispute among beneficiaries. Correction: leave the balance untouched while the official claim is reviewed unless a court or the exchange gives written, legally appropriate instructions.
Planning ahead to make recovery possible
Individual exchange accounts may not support beneficiary designations. A practical estate plan should therefore identify where digital assets are held without exposing the secrets that control them.
- List each exchange, its public account identifier and the type of assets held.
- State which lawyer, executor or trusted fiduciary should receive the information.
- Explain where a hardware wallet, backup or recovery instructions are stored.
- Separate account-location information from passwords, private keys and recovery phrases.
- Specify how the estate should value, secure and distribute the assets.
- Review the plan after changing exchanges, devices, custodians or estate representatives.
For Kraken, earlier guidance has suggested including the public account ID in an estate plan. That helps the representative locate the account while keeping authentication secrets private. Similar principles apply to any exchange, but always verify the current service rules.
When to obtain professional help
Consult a probate or digital-asset estate lawyer when there is no will, multiple heirs, a contested marriage or domestic partnership, a trust, a cross-border estate, a business account, a minor beneficiary, a large or volatile balance, or uncertainty about which jurisdiction’s law applies. A cryptocurrency tax and estate adviser can help reconcile transaction history, valuation and reporting. Technical wallet recovery should be handled by a qualified security professional under a documented chain of custody.
Exchange procedures and legal requirements can change. Recheck the relevant official support page immediately before filing, and treat the page’s current document list and regional restrictions as controlling for that claim.
