How to Reconcile ITR Turnover With GST Returns, AIS, and Books of Accounts

Your income-tax return (ITR) turnover, GST returns, Annual Information Statement (AIS), and accounting books can legitimately show different figures. Reconciliation is not about forcing four totals to match; it is about defining each figure, comparing the same financial year and GST registrations, explaining every difference with source records, and retaining a defensible working paper.

Use a year-wise, transaction-level bridge: books to GSTR-1/GSTR-3B, GST returns to the ITR’s Schedule GST, and the filed GST data to AIS code EXC-GSTR3B. Keep purchase-side input-tax-credit (ITC) checks from GSTR-2B separate from outward-turnover reconciliation.

What each record is actually measuring

Before adding numbers, label the population and definition behind each total. A sales ledger, a GST invoice total, a GST taxable-value total, an ITR gross-receipts figure, and AIS information are not automatically interchangeable.

Record What to identify Why it may differ
Books of accounts Revenue or sales accounts under the accounting basis used by the entity Recognition date, accounting policy, discounts, returns, advances, non-operating receipts, and classification choices can differ from GST reporting.
GSTR-1 Outward-supply details reported by invoice, note, amendment and supply category Invoice value includes GST; taxable value is determined under GST rules. Exempt, nil-rated, non-GST and other categories are reported separately.
GSTR-3B Summary figures declared for the relevant tax periods Monthly or quarterly filing timing, amendments and later adjustments can move amounts between periods.
ITR turnover or gross receipts The amount required by the applicable ITR and income computation The income-tax form and accounting definition may not use the same base as GST taxable turnover.
ITR Schedule GST GST-related turnover information requested by the notified ITR Fields and instructions are assessment-year specific. The AY 2023-24 ITR-5 example includes annual outward supplies as per GST returns, but it is not a current-year filing instruction.
AIS Information code EXC-GSTR3B for GST turnover, shown in the Other Information tab AIS surfaces information associated with GST filings; it is not a replacement for the books or filed returns.

The Income Tax Department’s AIS FAQ states: “Yes, AIS does display the information related to GST turnover under information code (EXC-GSTR3B).” The same FAQ explains that, from AY 2023-24 onward, Form 26AS displays only TDS/TCS information. Therefore, inspect AIS separately when checking GST turnover information; do not expect the relevant figure in 26AS.

Fix the reconciliation scope before downloading data

A reconciliation becomes unreliable when one side covers a different year, taxpayer, entity or GST registration. Write the scope at the top of the working paper.

  • Financial year: State the exact 1 April–31 March period. Then state the assessment year in which that year’s income is reported.
  • Taxpayer and entity: Use the legal name, PAN, constitution and accounting entity that filed the ITR.
  • Accounting basis: Note whether the books use cash or accrual recognition and which sales and revenue accounts are included.
  • GST registrations: List every GSTIN belonging to the entity, including registrations in different states. Keep GSTIN-level tabs before consolidating.
  • Filing status: Mark whether each GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, annual return, reconciliation statement, ITR and AIS download is filed, revised, amended or still pending.

Do not combine a calendar-year AIS view with a financial-year ledger, or one GSTIN’s returns with the entity-wide ITR, without an explicit period and coverage bridge.

Collect and preserve the source records

Download filed records rather than relying on manually retyped totals. Preserve the filing period, ARN or acknowledgement where available, download date and file name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Export the sales ledger, revenue ledgers, trial balance and general ledger for the selected financial year.
  2. Collect invoice registers, credit-note and debit-note registers, advance receipts and adjustment registers, and the underlying invoices.
  3. Download filed GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B for every GSTIN and period in the year. Retain amendments and later-period documents that relate to the year under review.
  4. Download the applicable annual GST return and reconciliation filing, if required for that taxpayer and year.
  5. Download AIS and inspect the Other Information tab for EXC-GSTR3B. Save the AIS version or PDF used for the comparison.
  6. Save the filed ITR, computation and all relevant schedules, including the GST schedule where the notified form contains one.
  7. Gather bank or payment-settlement records only where they explain advances, receipts, refunds or a book entry that cannot be traced from the sales ledger.

Use a read-only archive of the original files and a separate workbook for calculations. Never overwrite a filed return or an original ledger export while preparing a reconciliation.

Define the figures before comparing them

Create a definitions sheet with one row per number. Record whether the amount is gross or net, tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive, annual or period-based, and whether it includes exempt, nil-rated, non-GST or no-supply items.

Invoice value versus taxable value

GSTR-1 guidance distinguishes invoice value from taxable value. Invoice value includes the GST charged to the customer; taxable value is the value to which GST provisions apply. A book revenue account may exclude output tax, while an invoice-total report may include it. Comparing those two totals without removing or adding tax creates an artificial variance.

Taxable, exempt, nil-rated and non-GST supplies

GSTR-1 has distinct reporting categories for taxable outward supplies and for nil-rated, exempt and non-GST supplies. Accounting revenue may include all of them in one sales account, while a GST taxable-turnover field may include only the taxable base. Identify each category separately instead of treating a non-taxable item as an error.

Gross receipts, turnover and other income

Use the exact label in the ITR and computation. A gross-receipts field for a business or profession may not have the same perimeter as a GST outward-supply field. Interest, sale of fixed assets, reimbursements, deposits, loans and other non-sales receipts must be classified according to the applicable accounting and tax treatment, not inserted into GST turnover merely because cash was received.

Build the books-to-GST bridge

Start with the accounts that feed the ITR turnover or gross-receipts amount. Then map every relevant entry to the GST reporting category and period. A useful bridge has separate columns for document number, document date, book posting date, GSTIN, customer type, supply category, taxable value, GST, gross invoice value, note or amendment reference, GSTR-1 period and GSTR-3B period.

Step 1: establish the book starting point

  1. Extract the sales and revenue accounts used in the ITR computation.
  2. Reconcile their total to the trial balance and financial statements for the same year.
  3. Flag entries posted to miscellaneous income, discounts, returns, freight or reimbursements that may contain sales-related amounts.
  4. Remove items that are clearly outside the turnover definition being tested, documenting the account and reason.

Step 2: classify each outward transaction

Assign each invoice or adjustment to taxable, exempt, nil-rated, non-GST or no-supply treatment where applicable. Record whether the amount is a sale, a credit note, a debit note, an advance, an adjustment against an advance or an amendment to an earlier document.

Step 3: align the reporting period

Compare the book recognition date with the GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B tax period. A December invoice reported in a later return, or a credit note issued in one year and reported in the next permitted period, belongs in a timing-difference schedule rather than an unexplained residual.

Step 4: reconcile the tax component

Where books record revenue net of GST and the GST report presents invoice value, show output CGST, SGST, IGST and cess (if applicable) as a separate bridge line. Do not apply a single percentage conversion to the whole business: rates, exemptions, place-of-supply treatment and document types can differ by transaction.

Step 5: tie the bridge to filed returns

Sum the mapped transactions by GSTIN and return period, then compare those totals with the filed GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B. Investigate unmatched documents, duplicate invoice numbers, cancelled documents and amendments before changing a book entry or return figure.

Reconcile GST returns to the ITR Schedule GST

Use the current assessment-year ITR instructions, not an old form copied from a prior filing. The notified AY 2023-24 ITR-5 contains a Schedule GST field for annual outward supplies as per GST returns; it demonstrates the schedule’s purpose but does not establish the field labels or applicability for AY 2026-27 or any other year.

  1. Open the assessment year’s official ITR utility and confirm that the taxpayer is using the correct form and schedule.
  2. List every GSTIN reported in the ITR schedule and match it to the GSTIN-level annual totals in your working paper.
  3. Trace each schedule amount to the filed GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B totals, including documented note, amendment and timing adjustments.
  4. Check whether the ITR asks for annual outward supplies, taxable turnover, turnover as per GST returns or another specifically defined amount. Use the field instruction, not a familiar label from a previous year.
  5. Save a PDF or printout of the completed schedule and the calculation supporting each field.

Do not assume that the ITR turnover field must equal GSTR-1 invoice value, GSTR-3B taxable turnover or book sales. The schedule can request GST information for disclosure while the main ITR computation follows income-tax and accounting rules.

Use AIS as a discrepancy signal

AIS is useful for identifying what the tax department has received through information reporting, but it does not show the books themselves. Compare the AIS EXC-GSTR3B amount with the underlying filed GST periods and GSTIN coverage.

What to check when AIS differs

  • Period: Confirm that the AIS amount relates to the same financial year and not a filing or update posted later.
  • GSTIN coverage: Check whether AIS reflects one registration or all registrations connected to the PAN.
  • Return status: Identify late-filed, amended, revised or corrected GSTR-3B data that may have changed after the original download.
  • Definition: Determine whether the surfaced amount is a GSTR-3B turnover figure, taxable value or another displayed aggregate before comparing it with books.
  • Data quality: Trace the AIS amount back to filed return acknowledgements and downloaded return data rather than editing books to match AIS.

If the underlying return is correct but AIS appears incomplete or inaccurate, use the feedback facility only where appropriate and retain the submitted feedback and supporting documents. An AIS difference by itself is not proof that the ITR or books are wrong.

Keep annual GST reconciliation separate

Annual GST work answers a different question from the ITR-to-books bridge. GST annual-reconciliation materials describe reconciling annual turnover after adjustments to taxable turnover reported in GSTR-9, while accounting separately for exempt, nil-rated, non-GST and no-supply turnover.

Annual GST checks

  • Reconcile the annual total of filed GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B to the annual-return figures.
  • List adjustments made for credit notes, debit notes, amendments and other permitted reporting differences.
  • Present exempt, nil-rated, non-GST and no-supply turnover separately where the current form requires it.
  • Explain differences between annual books and GST annual figures by document and period, not by an unsupported percentage.

Run the GSTR-2B check separately

GSTR-2B is a purchase-side ITC control, not an outward-turnover report. GST Portal guidance recommends reconciling GSTR-2B with books and records, including checks for duplicate ITC, required credit reversals and reverse-charge tax.

  1. Match each GSTR-2B document to the purchase register and supplier invoice.
  2. Remove or investigate duplicate credits and documents recorded for the wrong GSTIN or period.
  3. Identify credits requiring reversal under the applicable rules and record the reversal separately from sales reconciliation.
  4. Check reverse-charge liabilities and related eligible credit in the correct periods.
  5. Retain an ITC reconciliation file that does not alter the outward-supply bridge.

Common difference categories and how to investigate them

Difference category Investigation procedure
Tax-inclusive invoice value versus net book revenue Separate GST collected from the revenue account and compare like-for-like bases.
Exempt, nil-rated or non-GST supplies Extract the transactions, confirm their GST classification and show them as a separate bridge line.
Credit or debit note in another period Trace the original invoice, note date, reporting period and accounting entry; record the timing difference.
Amendment reported later Compare the original and amended document, then identify which annual total includes the correction.
Advance received and later adjusted Match the receipt, advance reporting and invoice adjustment; avoid counting the same economic transaction twice.
Book recognition date differs from GST period Document the recognition rule, tax period and eventual reversal or settlement.
Different turnover definitions Read the ITR field instruction and GST return table separately, then map the precise populations.
AIS does not match filed GSTR-3B Check GSTIN, year, filing or amendment status and the AIS display before giving feedback or changing records.

These are investigation categories, not automatic explanations. Every adjustment still needs a document, a period and a stated treatment in books, GST returns and the ITR.

Choose the correct ITR before relying on its labels

Turnover fields differ by form, and the form itself depends on taxpayer type and eligibility. Income Tax Department downloads identify ITR-3 for individuals and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) with business or professional income. ITR-4 is for specified eligible resident taxpayers using sections 44AD, 44ADA or 44AE, subject to the form’s conditions.

These descriptions are not a substitute for checking the assessment-year notification. The Income Tax Department’s AY 2026-27 downloads page showed the common ITR utility with a latest release date of 2 September 2026; use the current utility and eligibility rules when filing. Companies, firms, associations, trusts and other taxpayers may fall under different forms. A wrong form can make a superficially matching turnover figure meaningless.

Use a controlled reconciliation workbook

A practical workbook separates raw data from calculations and conclusions.

  2. Books: ledger exports and account mapping to the ITR computation.
  3. GSTR-1: invoice, note, amendment and category detail by GSTIN and period.
  4. GSTR-3B: filed summary values and acknowledgement references.
  5. ITR Schedule GST: each field, source return, calculation and filed value.
  6. AIS: EXC-GSTR3B amount, download date, comparison and any feedback reference.
  7. Annual GST: GSTR-9/GSTR-9C work where applicable, with current-year requirement checks.
  8. Exceptions: one row per residual difference and its resolution.

Use consistent signs: sales positive, credit notes negative, debit notes positive, and reversals according to the schedule’s convention. Lock raw tabs, restrict edits to calculation cells and have a second person review material exceptions.

Document residuals and corrections

For each unresolved or adjusted amount, record:

  • amount and currency;
  • financial year, return period and assessment year;
  • GSTIN and entity;
  • invoice, note, ledger or bank reference;
  • reason category;
  • treatment in books;
  • treatment in GSTR-1, GSTR-3B and annual GST filings;
  • treatment in the ITR and Schedule GST;
  • correction, amendment or AIS feedback made;
  • reviewer, date and closing status.

Keep the working paper with filed returns, ledgers and source documents under a stable file name. If a material variance remains unexplained after transaction-level tracing, give the bridge to a qualified Indian tax professional rather than forcing a balancing entry.

Illustrative bridge (not a filing formula)

Assume, solely to demonstrate the layout, that a business’s books show ₹10,00,000 of net sales for one financial year. Its invoices also contain ₹1,80,000 of GST, ₹70,000 of exempt supplies are included in a combined sales ledger, and a ₹30,000 credit note is reported in the following return period. The working paper would not simply declare one “correct” turnover.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Bridge line Illustrative amount Purpose
Book net sales account ₹10,00,000 Starting point for the accounting-to-ITR bridge.
Add or remove items outside the tested ITR definition As documented Shows account-classification adjustments rather than guessing.
GST component included in invoice totals ₹1,80,000 Separates tax-inclusive invoice value from net revenue.
Exempt supplies in the combined ledger ₹70,000 Maps to the appropriate GST category instead of taxable turnover.
Credit note reported in a later period ₹30,000 Explains the year/return timing difference with document evidence.
Residual Calculated after source tracing Must be investigated; it is not a plug.

The example illustrates a method only. Actual treatment depends on the documents, GST rules, accounting policy and the exact ITR field; it is not a universal conversion formula.

Final review checklist

  • Is one financial year matched to its assessment year?
  • Are the entity, PAN and every GSTIN consistent across files?
  • Are book revenue, invoice value, taxable value and ITR turnover labelled separately?
  • Are GST amounts separated from tax-exclusive book revenue where necessary?
  • Are taxable, exempt, nil-rated, non-GST and no-supply items identified?
  • Are credit notes, debit notes, amendments and advances traced across periods?
  • Does the current ITR utility support the selected form and Schedule GST fields?
  • Does AIS EXC-GSTR3B tie to underlying GST filings, or is the difference documented?
  • Is annual GST reconciliation supported by the current year’s forms and requirements?
  • Is GSTR-2B ITC checking filed separately from outward turnover?
  • Does every residual have a source document, owner, treatment and reviewer?

A good reconciliation ends with an explainable bridge, not necessarily identical totals. Matching definitions, periods, GSTIN coverage and filing status is what makes the ITR, GST returns, AIS and books defensible together.
