If you or anyone in your tax family received advance Premium Tax Credit (APTC) payments for Marketplace health insurance, you generally must file a federal income-tax return and attach Form 8962—even if your income would otherwise be below the filing requirement. Form 1095-A from the Marketplace supplies the coverage figures; Form 8962 calculates the credit you were actually allowed and compares it with the advance payments. The difference can increase your refund, reduce the tax you owe, or require repayment.
The procedure below follows the 2025 Form 8962 instructions for returns filed in 2026. Forms, lines, repayment limits and special rules can change for another coverage year, so use the instructions for the year shown on your Form 1095-A.

What “reconciling” an advance premium tax credit means
The Marketplace determines an estimated amount of assistance before or during the coverage year. Its estimate uses information such as projected household income and family size. That estimate is paid directly to the health plan as an advance Premium Tax Credit, reducing the premiums you pay during the year.
Your tax return uses the information that was actually true for the coverage year. Form 8962 determines the Premium Tax Credit (PTC) allowed under the tax rules and compares it with the APTC reported by the Marketplace. Reconciling is that comparison.

- If the allowed PTC is greater than the APTC, the difference is an additional credit. It can increase your refund or reduce the tax you owe.
- If the APTC is greater than the allowed PTC, the excess is generally added back to your tax, subject to the repayment rules for that tax year.
For tax years other than 2020, the IRS requires this filing step whenever APTC was paid for you or for a person in your tax family (or for someone the Marketplace was told would be included in your tax family). The requirement applies even when Marketplace coverage lasted only part of the year.
The IRS warns in the 2025 Form 8962 instructions: “Mistakes in completing Form 8962 can cause you to pay too much tax, delay the processing of your return or refund, or cause you to receive correspondence from the IRS.” Treat the form as a calculation that must be checked, not as an optional attachment.
Documents, people and dates you need before starting
Form 1095-A is the starting document
Each qualified Marketplace policy generally generates a Form 1095-A. A household can receive more than one statement when it had more than one policy, changed policies, or had coverage records split among statements. Collect every statement issued for the coverage year before entering figures on Form 8962.
For 2025 coverage, the Marketplace was required to furnish or send Form 1095-A by January 31, 2026, according to the IRS Form 1095-A instructions. That date is a furnishing deadline, not a guarantee that every household will see the statement in the mail on that day.
Who is included in the tax-family check
Review the filing household, not only the person who paid the premiums. The reconciliation requirement can apply when APTC was paid for a spouse, dependent or another person the Marketplace was told would be part of the tax family. Changes in household membership, filing status or income can affect the credit calculation.
Use the coverage year shown on the forms
Form 8962 is year-specific. The detailed line discussion in this guide is based on the 2025 form and instructions for returns filed in 2026. Do not copy a line number, threshold or repayment rule into a different year without reading that year’s instructions.
Step-by-step: complete the reconciliation
1. Obtain every Form 1095-A
Sign in to your HealthCare.gov or state Marketplace account to download the statement if it is not in your records. You can also contact the Marketplace. The IRS cannot reissue Form 1095-A and cannot correct Marketplace coverage data, so questions about missing months, policy members, premiums or advance payments must be directed to the Marketplace.

Look at the top of each statement for a “CORRECTED” designation. If a corrected statement arrives before you file, use the corrected amounts in your Form 8962 calculation. If you already filed, follow the IRS guidance that accompanies corrected Form 1095-A information to determine whether an amended or other response is needed.
2. Check the statements before entering numbers
Confirm the tax year, the people covered, the policy months and the amounts reported for premiums, the applicable benchmark information and APTC. Compare all statements with your own enrollment records. Make sure you have not omitted a second policy or treated a corrected statement as an additional policy.
If anything is wrong, contact the Marketplace before relying on the figures. Do not substitute your own estimate for an incorrect Marketplace statement; the IRS expects the Marketplace to resolve the underlying record.
3. Start the correct year’s Form 8962
Use the Form 8962 and instructions for the coverage year, then transfer the Form 1095-A information exactly as those instructions direct. The 2025 form is organized around the annual and monthly contribution calculation, the credit claim and reconciliation, repayment of excess advance payments, shared-policy allocation and an alternative calculation for the year of marriage.
Read the instructions for any condition that changes the ordinary calculation. Examples include a policy shared with another tax family, household or income changes that were not reported to the Marketplace, and filing-status issues. These situations cannot safely be handled by applying a single shortcut to every household.
4. Calculate the Premium Tax Credit allowed
Form 8962 uses the actual tax-return information for the year rather than only the income projection made when coverage began. Complete the applicable annual and monthly portions and follow the form’s directions for allocating months or policy amounts. Check every amount carried from Form 1095-A and every total produced on Form 8962.
If you married during the year, review the alternative calculation section described in the 2025 instructions. It may be relevant to the year-of-marriage rules, but eligibility depends on the facts and the instructions for that year.

5. Reconcile the allowed credit with APTC
Form 8962 compares the PTC allowed with the APTC shown on your Form 1095-A statements. The comparison produces one of two basic results:
Recommended Free Tools
| Form 8962 result | Tax-return effect | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Allowed PTC is larger than APTC | The difference is an additional credit that can increase a refund or reduce tax due. | Carry the result from Form 8962 to the federal return as directed. |
| APTC is larger than allowed PTC | The excess is generally repaid through the return, subject to the applicable tax-year repayment rules. | Use the repayment amount calculated on Form 8962; do not replace it with an informal estimate. |
6. Check any repayment limitation
For the 2025 instructions, the excess APTC repayment can be limited under the applicable table. The instructions state that when Form 8962 line 5 is 400 or more, there is no repayment limitation and the excess amount is repaid. This is a 2025-instruction rule; verify the corresponding line and threshold in another year’s form before using it.
7. Attach Form 8962 to the federal return
File Form 8962 with the federal income-tax return for the coverage year. A return that omits the reconciliation can be delayed and can affect eligibility for advance payments in a later year. Whether you file electronically or on paper, confirm that the filing method supports the correct year’s Form 8962 and includes all required Form 1095-A information.
What your result means
The reconciliation is not a separate bill from the Marketplace. It is part of the federal tax calculation. The result reflects the difference between an estimated subsidy paid during the year and the credit allowed after the year’s income, family and coverage information is known.
When the allowed credit is higher
An allowed credit larger than the advance payments creates an additional PTC. Depending on the rest of your return, that additional amount can increase the refund or reduce the balance due. Keep the completed Form 8962 with your tax records so you can explain the calculation if the IRS asks.
When the advance payments are higher
An excess APTC amount is generally added to the tax calculation as a repayment. The amount may be limited under the year’s repayment table, but the limitation is not universal and can change by year. Use the instructions for the coverage year rather than assuming that an earlier limit still applies.
Special situations that change the normal workflow
Marketplace coverage lasted less than a full year
You still reconcile if APTC was paid for any month. The IRS states that the requirement applies when coverage lasted less than the full year and when coverage ended at year-end. Complete the monthly portions for the months shown on Form 1095-A instead of treating the policy as a full-year policy.

Another person in the tax family had the policy
Gather the statement even if you were not the person who selected the plan or paid the premium. The tax return may need to reconcile APTC paid for any person included in the tax family. Coordinate with the person who has the Marketplace account so that every statement is included and no policy is counted twice.
A policy was shared between tax families
When a Marketplace policy covered people who belong to different tax families, the 2025 form provides a shared-policy allocation section. Follow the allocation instructions for the applicable year and use the information from all relevant statements. Do not divide premiums or APTC by guesswork; the form’s method determines the amounts assigned to each tax family.

You married during the year
The 2025 instructions include an alternative calculation for the year of marriage. Review that section when the marriage and filing facts fit its requirements. A marriage-year calculation can involve income and coverage months from both spouses, so complete the ordinary portions of the form only as the instructions direct.
You changed information but did not report it to the Marketplace
Income, household size, filing status and other changes can make the advance estimate differ substantially from the final credit. Report the actual information on your tax return and use the year-specific Form 8962 instructions for the calculation. Do not try to force the return to match the estimate that was originally used for APTC.

Missing statement
First check the online Marketplace account, then contact the Marketplace that issued coverage. The IRS cannot reissue Form 1095-A or answer questions about whether its entries are accurate. Because Form 8962 depends on the statement, resolve the missing document before filing whenever possible.
Incorrect statement
Contact the Marketplace and explain which policy, month or person is wrong. Keep any replacement or explanatory information it provides. The IRS does not correct the Marketplace record for you.

Corrected statement after filing
Follow the IRS instructions for corrected Form 1095-A statements and the effect on an already-filed return. The required response depends on what changed. Preserve both versions and the Marketplace explanation so you can document why the calculation changed.
If the IRS sends Letter 12C
Letter 12C can request Form 1095-A and a completed Form 8962 when the original return did not include the reconciliation. Read the notice carefully, provide the documents and information it requests, and use the response method and deadline stated in the letter.
For this specific Letter 12C response process, IRS guidance says not to file Form 1040-X merely to provide the missing Form 8962 and Form 1095-A. Send the requested response through the channel identified in the notice instead. Keep proof of what you sent and when.

| Problem | Why it matters | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| Using an estimate instead of Form 1095-A | The Marketplace statement contains the coverage and APTC data used by Form 8962. | Download or request the statement from the Marketplace and transfer its figures as instructed. |
| Leaving out a second 1095-A | More than one policy can produce more than one statement, so totals may be incomplete. | Check the Marketplace account and household records for every policy and statement. |
| Using the wrong tax year’s form | Lines, calculations and repayment rules can change. | Match Form 8962 to the coverage year shown on Form 1095-A. |
| Ignoring a “CORRECTED” designation | The original figures may no longer be the Marketplace record. | Use the corrected statement if it arrives before filing; follow IRS guidance if you already filed. |
| Forgetting partial-year months | Reconciliation is required even when coverage did not last all year. | Complete the monthly entries for the actual covered months. |
| Misallocating a shared policy | Premiums and APTC may belong to more than one tax family. | Use the shared-policy allocation procedure in the applicable instructions. |
| Skipping arithmetic checks | Errors can delay processing, change tax and trigger IRS correspondence. | Recalculate totals and compare every carried amount with Form 1095-A. |
Choosing a way to file
The IRS identifies several filing paths. The important question is whether the method supports the correct year’s Form 8962 and your circumstances; the IRS sources do not endorse a particular provider.
| Filing path | What to verify | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Free filing assistance | Confirm that the service can include Form 8962 and handle the coverage year involved. | Taxpayers who qualify for an available assistance program and want guided filing. |
| IRS Free File | Check current program eligibility and Form 8962 support. | Eligible taxpayers who prefer self-service online filing. |
| Commercial tax software | Verify support for Form 8962, multiple Form 1095-A statements, shared-policy allocation and marriage-year situations when relevant. | Taxpayers who want automated calculations but can review the entries themselves. |
| Tax professional | Provide every Form 1095-A, corrected statement and Marketplace correspondence. | Households with shared policies, filing-status changes, corrected forms or a complex reconciliation. |
Software or professional help does not replace obtaining an accurate Form 1095-A. If the statement is missing or wrong, resolve that issue with the Marketplace first.
A final pre-filing checklist
- You have every Form 1095-A for the coverage year, including statements for other members of your tax family.
- You checked each statement for the correct year, policy months, covered people and “CORRECTED” designation.
- You contacted the Marketplace about any missing or inaccurate statement.
- You are using Form 8962 and instructions for the same coverage year as the Form 1095-A.
- You reviewed the annual and monthly contribution calculation and any applicable allocation or marriage-year section.
- You compared the allowed PTC with the APTC reported by the Marketplace.
- You checked the repayment rule and limitation for that specific tax year.
- You attached Form 8962 to the federal return and retained the forms and calculations.
For a different coverage year, obtain that year’s Form 8962 and Form 1095-A instructions before calculating or filing. The 2025 rules and the January 31, 2026 furnishing date are not automatically the rules or deadline for another year.
