Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteAfter a strong stock-market rally, do not rebalance simply because stocks went up. First compare your current portfolio with the allocation you chose for your goals and risk tolerance. If stocks now exceed that target, restore the mix by directing new money to underweight assets, selling part of the overweight position, or combining both approaches. Before selling, account for taxes and transaction costs, then follow a written calendar or portfolio-drift rule rather than reacting to headlines.
This is general U.S.-focused investor education, not an individualized allocation recommendation. The right target depends on your objective, time horizon, financial situation and ability to tolerate losses.

What rebalancing is—and what a stock rally does to your portfolio
Rebalancing means bringing your holdings back toward a target mix of asset categories, such as stocks, bonds and cash. A gain in one category can make it a larger percentage of the whole portfolio even when you have not bought more of it. That changes the portfolio’s risk exposure.

Investor.gov explains that investors generally do not change an allocation merely because one category recently outperformed; they rebalance to the allocation selected for their circumstances. Revisit that target when your goals, time horizon, financial situation or risk tolerance have changed. A rally by itself is not evidence that your long-term target should become more aggressive. Conversely, a temporary decline is not by itself a reason to abandon a target. Rebalancing is a control for portfolio risk and discipline, not a market-timing system.
Step 1: Find the allocation you intended to own
Start with the written investment policy, plan document or account settings that state your target percentages. Identify the categories that matter for your plan—for example, domestic stocks, international stocks, bonds and cash—and the target percentage for each.
If you never selected a target, pause before trading. Decide what mix is consistent with the goal, when you will need the money, your broader financial situation and the losses you could withstand without abandoning the plan. Recent gains alone cannot determine that allocation. A financial professional can help when the decision is substantial or your circumstances are complicated.

If your plan covers all retirement accounts, include all of them rather than judging one account in isolation. If an allocation applies only to a particular account, measure that account on its own and document why.
Step 2: Measure your current weights
List each holding, its current market value and the asset category to which it belongs. Add the values in each category, divide by the total portfolio value and compare the resulting percentages with the target. Include cash that is part of the investment plan; do not silently omit a category because it performed differently.

For a simple illustration, the SEC describes a hypothetical portfolio that begins with 60% in stocks. After the stock market rises, stocks represent 80% of the portfolio. Those figures are an SEC example, not a market statistic or a recommended allocation. The calculation is the important part: price changes can create a material gap without any new purchase.
| Category | Target weight | Current weight | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stocks | 60% | 80% | 20 percentage points overweight |
| Other planned assets | 40% | 20% | 20 percentage points underweight |
Use percentage points, not a relative percentage, when describing drift. A move from a 60% target to an 80% current weight is a 20-percentage-point difference. Record the date and values so you can apply the same process at the next review.
Step 3: Confirm that the target still fits
Before placing an order, ask whether anything material has changed since you set the target:
- Has the goal changed, such as a new spending need or a different retirement date?
- Has your time horizon shortened or lengthened?
- Has your income, emergency reserve, debt burden or other financial situation changed?
- Has your willingness or ability to tolerate a large loss changed?
If the answer is yes, you may need to create a revised allocation rather than mechanically restoring the old one. Treat that as a separate planning decision and write down the reason and effective date. If nothing material changed, the original target remains the reference point; the rally does not create a new target.
Step 4: Choose how to move back toward target
There are three core methods. The SEC and FINRA describe them as alternatives; no source establishes one universally best method.

Direct new contributions to underweight categories
Send new payroll contributions, deposits or other planned cash to categories below target instead of adding to the overweight stock category. This can change the mix without selling appreciated holdings. It works only to the extent that new money is available, and it may take time for the percentages to converge.

Change ongoing contribution percentages
Update the contribution instructions in a workplace plan or investment account so future purchases favor underweight categories. This is operationally similar to directing new cash, but it creates a repeatable flow that can continue until the portfolio is closer to target. Check the account’s current labels and effective date so the change applies to the intended pay period or deposit.
Sell overweight holdings and buy underweight holdings
Calculate the trades needed to reduce the overweight category and purchase the underweight categories. This restores the mix more directly, but selling can realize gains and incur transaction costs. Use current values and the target percentages rather than an arbitrary dollar amount, and check whether an order would leave the account with unintended cash.
Combine contributions and sales
Use available new cash first, then sell only enough of the overweight position to close the remaining gap. A combination can reduce the size of taxable or fee-generating sales while still moving the portfolio toward target. The sources do not prescribe a particular split; compare the practical tax and cost effects for your account.
Step 5: Check taxes, account rules and fees before selling
In a U.S. taxable account, selling an investment can create a reportable gain or loss. The federal treatment depends on facts such as the security, purchase basis, holding period, account and your overall tax situation. IRS Publication 550 (2025), Investment Income and Expenses explains federal reporting rules for investment income and dispositions; it does not calculate your personal liability. When the consequences are material or unclear, ask a qualified tax professional before trading.

Do not assume that every account receives identical treatment. Retirement and other tax-advantaged accounts have different rules from taxable brokerage accounts, and account-level restrictions can affect what you can trade or when. Confirm the account type, cost-basis lots and any plan restrictions in the account documentation.
Review fees as well as taxes. The SEC’s How Fees and Expenses Affect Your Investment Portfolio explains that transaction charges and ongoing expenses reduce returns. Before submitting an order, identify commissions if any, bid-ask spreads, fund transaction fees, redemption charges and other applicable costs. A small drift may not justify a costly trade.
The SEC and FINRA’s Investor Bulletin: Year-End Investment Considerations for Individual Investors likewise advises considering tax effects and transaction fees before choosing a rebalancing method or selling.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step 6: Select a repeatable review trigger
A rule prevents every market move from becoming a trading decision. Two broad approaches are supported by Investor.gov:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Trigger | How it works | What to remember |
|---|---|---|
| Calendar review | Check the allocation at a preselected interval. Investor.gov cites six- or twelve-month intervals as examples of schedules experts recommend. | A review does not require a trade; act only when drift and circumstances justify it. |
| Percentage-drift threshold | Review or act when a category moves beyond a preset percentage from its target. | Choose the threshold in advance and apply it consistently across reviews. |
You can combine the approaches—for example, check twice a year and act between checks only when a written drift threshold is crossed. Investor.gov says rebalancing generally works best relatively infrequently. It does not identify a single best threshold or schedule, so select a rule you can follow and document its start date, categories, threshold and treatment of new contributions.

Set a calendar reminder, save the target percentages and record the result of each review. If drift is immaterial, record “no trade” and keep the next review date rather than inventing a reason to act.
Worked example: using contributions before a sale
Suppose your written target is 60% stocks and 40% bonds and a rally leaves the portfolio at 75% stocks and 25% bonds. You have a planned cash contribution available before the next review. Directing that contribution entirely to bonds moves the percentages toward target without selling stock. Recalculate after the deposit; the amount needed depends on the portfolio’s total value and the contribution size.
If the contribution is too small to close the gap, you can evaluate a partial sale of stocks and a bond purchase. Before doing so, inspect the tax lots and estimated gain, the account type and all trading costs. The example illustrates the sequence, not a recommendation that 60/40 is suitable for any particular investor.
How to implement the process in an account
- Open the allocation record. Retrieve the investment policy, plan settings or other document that states each target percentage.
- Export or list current holdings. Capture market value, asset category, account type and cost-basis information where available.
- Calculate weights and drift. Divide each category’s value by the portfolio total and subtract the target percentage.
- Review personal circumstances. Confirm that the goal, horizon, financial situation and risk tolerance still support the target.
- Check available cash flows. Identify upcoming contributions, deposits or withdrawals that can be directed to underweight categories.
- Estimate trade consequences. For any proposed sale, review taxable gains or losses, account rules, commissions, spreads and fund charges.
- Place only the necessary orders. Use the target-based dollar amounts, verify the order details and confirm that the resulting cash position is intentional.
- Recalculate after settlement or posting. Confirm the actual weights and record the date, trades, costs and next review trigger.
Account interfaces use different labels and settlement processes, so follow the instructions for your brokerage or workplace plan. If you cannot determine a cost basis, tax consequence or order type, stop and obtain assistance rather than guessing.
Common mistakes after a rally
- Changing the target because the recent return looks attractive. Outperformance is not a planning reason by itself. Separate a target-allocation review from a forecast about future returns.
- Trading without measuring. A headline about a “surge” does not show how far your own portfolio drifted. Calculate category weights first.
- Ignoring assets outside one account. Measuring only the account that is easiest to access can misstate the allocation if the target covers several accounts.
- Forcing a sale when cash flows can do the work. New contributions may reduce drift with fewer tax and fee consequences, although they may be insufficient or too slow.
- Assuming a threshold is an order to trade. A trigger starts a review. You still need to check whether the target remains appropriate and whether costs are reasonable.
- Overlooking concentrated holdings. Classify each holding consistently and consider whether a single security creates a risk that the broad asset-category percentages do not reveal.
- Failing to document the rule. Without a written target and review date, decisions can become ad hoc reactions to performance.
When automated rebalancing may be worth evaluating
An automated account can monitor weights and place trades according to its program, but automation does not remove the need to understand the target, taxes or fees. The SEC’s Investor Bulletin: Robo-Advisers suggests asking any service how often it rebalances, what triggers allocation changes, how the account type affects taxes and what total fees and costs apply.
Use those questions to compare a service with managing the process yourself. Confirm whether the stated cadence is calendar-based, threshold-based or both; whether tax-sensitive trading or tax-loss harvesting is offered; which accounts are supported; and what costs are charged at the account, fund and transaction levels. No automated feature makes an unsuitable target appropriate.
A practical rebalancing checklist
- Target percentages and the reason for them are written down.
- All relevant accounts and holdings are included in the measurement.
- Current category weights and percentage-point drift are calculated as of a stated date.
- Goal, time horizon, financial situation and risk tolerance have been reviewed.
- Underweight categories and available new contributions are identified.
- For proposed sales, tax lots, account rules and transaction costs are checked.
- The chosen calendar or drift trigger is recorded.
- Orders are limited to what is needed to move toward the target.
- Post-trade weights, costs and the next review date are documented.
Bottom line
When stocks have surged, measure the drift from your existing target rather than trying to predict the next market move. If the target still fits, use new contributions, changed contribution instructions, sales of overweight holdings or a combination to restore the intended mix. Apply a written, relatively infrequent review rule and consider taxes, account treatment and fees before selling.
