Do not sell solely because a stock went up. First compare its new share of your total portfolio with the allocation and maximum position size you set for your goals, time horizon and risk tolerance. If the position is outside your guardrails, rebalance with a tax-aware mix of selling, buying underweight assets and directing new contributions—there is no requirement to liquidate the entire holding.
Start with the plan, not the recent winner
Rebalancing restores a portfolio toward its intended mix after market movements push it away from that mix. A stock can become a larger source of risk even when the company’s business has not changed. The key question is therefore not “Has this stock risen too far?” but “Is its current weight still appropriate under my written plan?”

Your plan should state desired percentages for stocks, bonds, cash and any other categories, along with a maximum position size or a percentage-band trigger. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) describes rebalancing as a way to return to an original allocation after some investments grow faster than others. Investor.gov likewise distinguishes between periodic reviews and rules based on preset percentage thresholds.

If your goals, time horizon or risk tolerance have changed, you may need a new allocation. That is a planning decision. A rebalance is different: it brings the portfolio back toward an existing policy. Changing the target simply because one holding has recently outperformed can turn a disciplined process into performance chasing.

Set guardrails you can follow
There is no SEC-mandated single-stock limit or universal rebalance interval. Choose a policy you can apply consistently, such as a maximum position size, a percentage-point band around each target, a calendar review every six or 12 months, or a combination. Investor.gov notes that some financial experts use six- or 12-month reviews and that rebalancing generally works best when done relatively infrequently.

Use current values, not the stock’s original cost. Include taxable and tax-advantaged accounts when your policy is meant to govern your overall investments. Also count exposure that may not appear under the same ticker.
Include indirect exposure
- Employer stock held in another account or retirement plan.
- Sector funds or narrowly focused funds that own the same company.
- Options or other instruments whose value is tied to the stock.
- Separate brokerage, retirement or education accounts if your risk policy covers them together.
Diversification applies both between asset classes and within them. A fund with a narrow sector or company focus is not automatically diversified just because it is a fund.

Use dollars as well as percentages
Suppose a stock is worth $80,000 in a $200,000 portfolio. Its weight is 40%. If your target is 20%, the target value at the current portfolio size would be about $40,000, so roughly $40,000 is above target before considering taxes, fees and market movement. The exact trade needed will change as prices and the portfolio total change; treat the calculation as a planning estimate, not a guaranteed execution amount.
Choose the least disruptive method that meets your target
| Method | Immediate tax realization | Transaction cost | Speed of reducing concentration | Effect on target allocation | Cash-flow requirement | Behavioral or timing risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sell the overweight stock and buy underweight assets | Usually realizes gains or losses in a taxable account | May include commissions, spreads or other trading costs | Fastest | Can restore targets in one operation | No new cash required | Requires deciding when and how much to sell |
| Buy only underweight assets | No sale, so no immediate gain from the rebalance sale | Costs on purchases may apply | Moderate; depends on available cash | Moves the portfolio toward target but may leave an oversized position | Requires available cash | Concentration remains while purchases catch up |
| Direct ongoing contributions to underweight assets | No sale required | Usually limited to the costs of scheduled purchases | Slowest | Gradual correction; the target can drift further if the stock keeps rising | Requires regular contributions | Leaves the largest temporary concentration and depends on continued saving |
| Stage sales and purchases over several adjustments | Realizes gains in the lots sold, but can spread realization over time | May create more orders and costs | Slower than a single sale | Approaches the target in steps | Not necessarily; can combine with contributions | Reduces all-at-once timing pressure but preserves temporary market risk |
The SEC identifies the first three approaches: sell overweight assets and buy underweight assets, buy only underweight assets, or direct new contributions toward underweight assets. A combination is also possible. The right choice depends on taxes, costs, urgency, cash flow and how far the portfolio has moved from policy.

When selling is appropriate
A sale is the quickest way to reduce a single-company exposure that exceeds your stated limit. It is most direct when the position is materially outside your band and you do not have enough new cash to correct the imbalance. Selling does not require abandoning the company; you can reduce it to a target or maximum weight.
When purchases or contributions are enough
If the excess is modest, buying underweight assets with available cash may correct the mix without realizing a taxable gain. Directing future contributions to bonds, broad stock funds or other underweight categories can be tax-efficient in a taxable account because it avoids an immediate sale. This method can take a long time, however, especially if the stock continues to appreciate.
When staging makes sense
Several smaller trades can reduce the pressure of choosing one exact selling day. Investor.gov’s Director’s Take encourages considering smaller tweaks rather than an all-in or all-out move. Staging does not eliminate market or tax risk: the stock could fall before later sales, or rise and remain concentrated longer.

Check tax lots and trading costs before placing an order
In a taxable account, every sale can create a reportable gain or loss. Before trading, identify the lots you might sell and estimate:
- Each lot’s cost basis.
- How long each lot has been held.
- The unrealized gain or loss for each lot.
- The portion of the sale that would be included in the current year’s tax calculations.
- Commissions, bid-ask spreads, fund expenses or other transaction costs.
- How the sale interacts with your account type, jurisdiction and current tax rules.
The SEC states: Before you rebalance your portfolio, you should consider whether the method of rebalancing you decide to use will trigger transaction fees or tax consequences.
A tax adviser or financial professional can help estimate the consequences and identify a lot-selection approach that fits your circumstances. Tax treatment depends on account type, cost basis, holding period, jurisdiction and law in effect when you trade.
Tax-advantaged accounts still need an allocation decision
Retirement and other tax-advantaged accounts may reduce or defer the immediate tax effect of a sale, but they do not remove investment risk or trading costs. Review the account’s rules before moving assets, and consider the allocation across all accounts if your policy is household-wide.
Do not let taxes erase the risk decision
A large unrealized gain can make an oversized position feel untouchable. Compare the estimated cost of reducing it with the risk of remaining concentrated. If a sale is warranted, a staged plan, contributions to underweight assets or a partial reduction may make the trade-off manageable. None of these choices guarantees a better return.
A step-by-step rebalance process
- Write the current policy. Record target percentages for stocks, bonds, cash and other categories, your maximum single-position size and the percentage band or review date that triggers action.
- Gather all holdings. List the surged stock, employer shares, funds, options and accounts that create direct or indirect exposure.
- Calculate current weights. Divide each position and asset category by the current total portfolio value. Mark every item outside its allowed band.
- Estimate the target dollar amounts. Multiply the current portfolio value by each target percentage. Note that prices will change while you trade, so these are not fixed settlement values.
- List available cash and contributions. Determine whether deposits, dividends or planned purchases can correct part of the imbalance without selling.
- Model tax lots and costs. For each possible sale, record basis, holding period, estimated gain or loss, expected tax effect and transaction costs.
- Select a method. Choose a sale, purchases, contributions or a staged combination based on urgency, tax impact, cash flow and the size of the deviation.
- Place trades to the policy, not the headline. Specify the dollar or percentage reduction and the underweight assets to receive proceeds. Do not expand the target merely because the stock has been a recent winner.
- Document the decision. Save the target, trigger, lots selected, trades, assumptions and next review date.
- Review on schedule. Recheck at the written interval or when a band is breached, rather than reacting to every daily price move.
Illustrative examples
Example: a 60/40 portfolio drifts to 80/20
The SEC uses an illustrative case in which a portfolio intended to hold 60% stocks and 40% bonds becomes 80% stocks and 20% bonds after a market increase. The figures are an example of allocation drift, not a measured market forecast. A rebalance would sell some stock exposure and buy bonds, or use new money for bonds, until the portfolio is closer to the 60/40 policy. The investor would first check taxes and fees rather than assuming a single trade is automatically best.

Example: moving from 85/15 back to 80/20
Investor.gov’s Director’s Take gives an illustrative 85% stocks/15% bonds portfolio with an 80%/20% target. Selling 5% of the portfolio’s stock allocation and buying bonds returns the mix to the stated target, subject to market movement and trading costs. The example demonstrates that a partial reduction can solve the drift; it does not imply that every investor should use an 80/20 allocation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How often should you rebalance?
A calendar rule, a percentage-band rule or both can provide discipline. A six- or 12-month review is one approach cited by Investor.gov. A band rule might call for action only when a holding or asset class moves beyond the limit you selected. Frequent trading can add costs, taxes and decision fatigue, while waiting too long can leave the portfolio exposed to a concentration you no longer accept.
Rebalancing tends to work best relatively infrequently. The purpose is to maintain a policy, not to predict short-term prices. Between scheduled reviews, act when a major life change alters your goals or risk tolerance, or when the written concentration limit is breached.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Selling because the chart looks high
A rising price alone is not a rebalancing signal. Measure the position against the target and concentration rule. If it remains within policy, a sale may be unnecessary; if it exceeds policy, follow the plan regardless of whether recent momentum continues.

Ignoring exposure in funds or other accounts
Checking only one brokerage account can understate concentration. Add employer stock, sector funds, options and other accounts before deciding how much risk to remove.

Treating a broad label as proof of diversification
A fund can be narrowly focused. Inspect its holdings and sector exposure before counting it as a solution to single-company or sector concentration.
Forgetting the tax lot
Selling the first shares that appear in an account can create a different tax result from selling a lot with a smaller gain or a loss. Review lot-level information and estimated current-year consequences before submitting the order.
Using contributions without checking the pace
New money avoids an immediate sale, but the position may remain oversized for months or years. Estimate how long contributions would take to bring the weight inside your band and decide whether that temporary concentration is acceptable.

Staging can reduce timing pressure, but excessive orders may increase costs and make the policy hard to follow. Set a number of stages, a time window and a final target in advance.
When professional help is useful
Consider a tax adviser or financial professional when the position has a large embedded gain, spans several account types, includes employer compensation or options, or would materially affect your current-year tax calculation. Ask for a written explanation of the lots selected, expected taxes, transaction costs, target weights and remaining concentration after the trades.
This is general U.S.-oriented investor education, not individualized investment or tax advice. Your account documents, tax jurisdiction, cost basis, holding period and current law determine the result of any transaction.
Keep a one-page rebalancing policy
A short written policy makes the next decision easier and reduces the temptation to chase whichever asset recently performed best. Include:
- Target percentages by asset category.
- Maximum single-company and sector exposures.
- The accounts and indirect holdings included in the calculation.
- The percentage band or calendar review date that triggers action.
- The order of preference: contributions first, purchases second, sales third—or another sequence that fits your tax situation.
- Rules for selecting tax lots and estimating costs.
- The number of stages permitted and the date by which the adjustment should be complete.
- The next review date and the circumstances that would justify changing the policy itself.
The SEC describes rebalancing as cutting back on current “winners” and adding to current “losers,” a discipline that can force investors to buy low and sell high. That phrase describes the mechanical effect of returning to a target; it is not a prediction that an underweight asset will outperform next.
