A mutual fund cutting its information-technology (IT) holdings is not, by itself, a signal for you to sell technology or buy a technology fund. First measure your household’s actual IT exposure across every fund, account and individual security. Then compare that number with a written allocation based on your risk tolerance, time horizon, liquidity needs and goals. Rebalance only if the portfolio has moved materially away from that plan—or your plan has changed. In many cases, directing new contributions to underweight assets is less disruptive than selling in a taxable account.

What a fund’s lower IT weight does—and does not—mean
A manager can reduce a fund’s IT allocation for several reasons: a deliberate portfolio decision, an index-methodology change, market movements that alter sector weights, a merger, or a reclassification of companies. The change describes that fund at a particular reporting date. It does not describe your entire household portfolio, and it is not an instruction to copy the trade.

The correct response depends on the portfolio-level result, not the headline about one fund.

Fund names are an unreliable proxy for concentration. A broadly named equity fund may still have a substantial IT allocation, while a sector fund can be much more concentrated. Investor.gov cautions that a mutual fund or exchange-traded fund does not necessarily provide diversification when it is narrowly focused on one industry. Diversification also cannot be inferred simply from owning several funds that hold many of the same companies.
Step 1: Confirm exactly what changed
Use the fund’s most recent portfolio disclosure, shareholder report, fact sheet and prospectus. Compare the current sector weight and largest positions with earlier reports, noting each document’s reporting date. Sector classifications and holdings change, so an old fact sheet is not a reliable description of today’s portfolio.
Identify the source of the change
- Manager decision: The portfolio team deliberately bought fewer IT companies or increased other sectors.
- Index methodology: A benchmark reclassified companies, changed constituent rules or rebalanced its sector definitions.
- Market movement: IT prices fell or other sectors rose, changing percentages even if the fund made few trades.
- Corporate action: A merger, fund conversion or closure altered the holdings.
- Classification change: A company moved between sectors under the reporting system used by the fund.
These causes have different implications. A temporary market-weight shift is not the same as a permanent change in the fund’s mandate. Read the prospectus to verify the objective and permitted range before treating a reported percentage as a lasting policy.

Record the “as of” date for every sector percentage. A fund’s quarterly report, annual report and website snapshot may cover different dates. Compare like with like, and distinguish a percentage of equity holdings from a percentage of the fund’s total assets. If a report does not state the basis, do not assume the figures are directly comparable.
Step 2: Calculate your household’s total IT exposure
List every account you are evaluating together: taxable brokerage accounts, traditional and Roth IRAs, 401(k)s and other workplace plans, mutual funds, ETFs and individual stocks. For each holding, capture its current dollar value and its IT percentage from the latest available disclosure. Multiply the value by the sector percentage to estimate IT dollars, then add the results.
A simple worksheet is:
IT dollars in holding = holding value × reported IT weightTotal IT percentage = total IT dollars ÷ total portfolio value

For an individual technology stock, the IT weight is normally 100 percent for this calculation. For a diversified fund, use its reported IT allocation rather than assuming it is zero or equal to the fund’s name. Cash and non-equity assets should remain in the denominator if your target allocation includes them.
Illustrative calculation
Suppose an investor has $40,000 in Fund A with a 24 percent IT weight, $30,000 in Fund B with a 12 percent IT weight, and $10,000 in an individual IT stock. The estimated IT exposure is $9,600 plus $3,600 plus $10,000, or $23,200. Against an $80,000 portfolio, that is 29 percent. If Fund A later reports a 18 percent IT weight while its value and the other holdings are unchanged, the household estimate falls by $2,400 to $20,800, or 26 percent. Whether 26 percent is too high, too low or appropriate cannot be answered without the investor’s written target.
Look for overlap, not just sector labels
Several broad funds may own the same large technology companies. Add the overlapping positions where the disclosures provide them, and note whether those companies dominate the combined portfolio. Overlap can create more single-company and sector risk than the fund count suggests.
The Investment Company Institute reported a median of 77 stocks held by U.S. equity mutual funds as of December 2024. That statistic describes a typical fund’s holdings, not your household’s diversification. Two funds with dozens of stocks each can still be concentrated in the same names or sectors. Regulated investment companies must meet diversification tests under tax law, but fund-level compliance does not guarantee that an investor’s total portfolio is diversified.
Step 3: Write or verify a target allocation
Rebalancing means bringing the portfolio back toward an intended allocation. Investor.gov describes the practice this way; it is not a forecast of which sector will perform best next. Your target should be a part of a broader plan covering asset classes, sectors and geographies.
Recommended Free Tools
Inputs that belong in the target
- Risk tolerance: How much loss you can financially and emotionally withstand without abandoning the plan.
- Time horizon: The date or range when the money will be needed. A near-term goal generally has less capacity for volatile equity exposure than a decades-away retirement goal.
- Liquidity needs: The amount that must remain readily available for emergencies, planned spending or withdrawals.
- Purpose of the money: Retirement, education, a home purchase and other goals may require different mixes.
- Other resources: Pensions, Social Security expectations, debt, employment income and assets outside the accounts being reviewed.
There is no universal technology-sector percentage suitable for every investor. An allocation that is reasonable for one person can be unsuitable for another, even with the same age, because goals, income stability and tolerance for losses differ. Do not substitute a recent performance chart or a news headline for a written target.

Define a material drift before you trade
Choose a rule in advance for when a deviation is large enough to correct. You might use percentage-point bands, relative bands or a scheduled review, but the rule should be consistent with your plan and account costs. No single threshold is established, so select one deliberately rather than treating a fund’s announcement as an automatic trigger.
Document the target, the acceptable range, the review date and the order in which you will use accounts. A written rule helps prevent performance-chasing: the SEC cautions investors not to change an allocation merely because an asset category has recently performed well.
Step 4: Choose a correction that fits the situation
Once you know your actual exposure and target, classify the result. The table below separates the portfolio condition from the action that may fit it. None of these choices is automatic; taxes, costs and your plan control the decision.

| Portfolio finding | Possible first action | Why it may fit | When to reconsider |
|---|---|---|---|
| IT is above the written target | Direct new contributions to underweight assets; if necessary, sell selected IT exposure | New money can reduce the imbalance without realizing gains | Large drift, limited future contributions, high concentration or a changed goal |
| IT is below the written target | Direct new contributions to an appropriate diversified holding that includes the needed exposure | Restores the plan without making a concentrated sector bet | Your target has changed or the holding’s fees, mandate or overlap are unsuitable |
| IT is within the target range | Make no sector trade; continue the scheduled review | A fund’s internal adjustment has not created a portfolio-level drift | New information changes your objective, risk capacity or liquidity needs |
| The target itself no longer fits | Rewrite the allocation, then implement it gradually or in a tax-aware order | A change in goal or horizon is different from a temporary drift | You are reacting only to recent returns or headlines |
Use contributions and distributions first when practical
If you are adding money to a retirement plan or brokerage account, send contributions toward assets that are below target. Reinvested distributions can be directed the same way when the account permits. This approach may correct a moderate drift without a sale, capital-gains realization or transaction charge.
Contribution-only rebalancing is not always enough. It may take too long for a large imbalance, and a workplace plan may offer limited choices. If the risk is material or the goal is near, a deliberate sale may be warranted after the tax and cost review.
Do not buy a concentrated technology fund merely to replace a reduced weight
If IT is below target, restoring it with a narrowly focused fund can increase concentration and overlap. First ask whether a diversified holding in your written asset-allocation plan already supplies the needed exposure. Sector funds can be appropriate for a specific strategy, but they carry the risk of events affecting that industry. The SEC warns that concentration in information technology can make a fund vulnerable to sector-specific developments.

Step 5: Compare taxes, fees and trading costs
Before selling in a taxable account, record each lot’s cost basis, purchase date, unrealized gain or loss, holding period and proposed sale amount. Estimate the tax effect under the rules that apply to you, including whether a gain is short- or long-term, and consider how the sale could affect your tax return. A qualified tax professional can evaluate material gains, losses and complex filing situations.
Costs to include in the decision
- Brokerage commissions or other transaction charges, if any.
- Bid-ask spreads and market-impact costs when trading ETFs or stocks.
- Fund redemption fees or account-specific charges.
- Ongoing expense ratios and other fund fees after the trade.
- Capital-gains taxes from selling appreciated shares.
- Taxable capital-gains distributions a fund may make even when you did not sell your shares.
The SEC’s investor guidance notes that rebalancing can create transaction fees or tax consequences. A tax-advantaged account generally avoids current capital-gains tax on an internal sale, but account rules and eventual withdrawals still matter. Investor.gov’s 2025 bulletin notes that mutual funds and ETFs do not have a tax difference when held in a tax-advantaged account; taxable-account distributions and sales require separate attention.
Sequence accounts thoughtfully
Many investors can rebalance first inside a 401(k), IRA or other tax-advantaged account, where changing investments does not normally create a current capital-gains bill. That does not make every trade suitable: compare investment menus, fees, withdrawal rules and the target allocation across the whole household. A tax-advantaged account can also contain the most volatile or highest-growth assets if that fits the overall plan, but asset location is personal and should not override diversification.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step 6: Check whether a target-date fund is appropriate
A target-date fund can provide a professionally managed allocation that changes over time. It may simplify rebalancing for someone who wants a single diversified option, but it is not an automatic answer to a fund’s lower IT weight.
Review the fund’s glide path, fees, current risk level and the date at which it reaches its most conservative mix. Investor.gov advises target-date investors to verify that the most conservative allocation matches their own goals. Funds with the same target year can have materially different stock, bond, cash, sector and geographic exposures, so read the prospectus and holdings.
If you combine a target-date fund with other funds, include all of them in the household exposure calculation. Adding a technology fund on top can recreate the concentration the single-fund solution was intended to reduce.

A practical rebalancing worksheet
- Set the scope. Decide which accounts and outside holdings belong in the household calculation and record their values on one date.
- Gather current documents. Download each fund’s latest holdings, sector breakdown, fact sheet, shareholder report and prospectus. Record the reporting dates.
- Estimate IT dollars. Multiply each holding’s value by its reported IT weight and add the results, including individual IT stocks.
- Map overlap. List repeated large companies and note whether several funds depend on the same names.
- Write the target. Document the intended asset-class, sector and geographic mix, plus the acceptable drift range and review schedule.
- Measure the gap. Compare actual IT exposure and other asset weights with the target. Separate a temporary drift from a change in your goal or risk capacity.
- Test the least disruptive option. Model new contributions, reinvested distributions and exchanges inside tax-advantaged accounts before taxable sales.
- Price the trade. Estimate taxes, basis effects, transaction charges, spreads and ongoing fees for each candidate action.
- Execute deliberately. Place only the trades required by the written plan; avoid adding a sector bet because of a recent return or headline.
- Document and review. Save the calculation, target, rationale and date. Recheck at the next scheduled review or after a major change in goals, income or liquidity.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Copying the mutual fund’s trade
A fund manager’s decision reflects that fund’s mandate, benchmark and portfolio-management decisions. Your portfolio may have different holdings, taxes and goals. Measure household exposure before acting.
Assuming several funds equal diversification
Fund count is not a diversification metric. Examine sector weights, top positions, asset classes and geographies, then account for overlap.
Using a fund name as a sector report
Names such as “balanced,” “growth” or “broad market” do not tell you the current IT percentage. Use dated holdings and sector disclosures.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSetting a universal IT quota
No authoritative source establishes one technology percentage for every investor. A fixed quota detached from risk, horizon and goals can create a new concentration or an unnecessary underweight.
Trading in a taxable account without a basis review
An apparently small adjustment can create a large taxable gain. Identify lots, holding periods and distributions before selling, and obtain professional advice when the consequences are material.
Chasing a sector after strong performance
Recent returns do not establish a future target. The SEC specifically cautions against changing allocation simply because an asset category has recently performed well.
When professional advice is worth the cost
Consider a fiduciary financial planner or tax professional when you have large embedded gains, multiple employer plans, concentrated individual shares, an imminent withdrawal, complicated filing status or uncertainty about how accounts fit together. Ask the adviser to show the proposed target, overlap analysis, tax assumptions and implementation sequence. Advice should explain trade-offs rather than promise a particular technology return.

For a straightforward account with low costs and no material gains, a written allocation, current disclosures and contribution-based rebalancing may be sufficient. Revisit that conclusion when your goal, time horizon, liquidity needs or risk tolerance changes.
Bottom line
Start with the portfolio you actually own, not the trade reported by one mutual fund. Confirm the fund’s current holdings and why its IT weight changed, total your exposure across accounts, compare it with a written target, and correct only a meaningful mismatch. Use contributions and tax-advantaged accounts where practical; before selling taxable holdings, weigh basis, holding period, taxes, fees and trading costs. A lower IT allocation inside a fund is information to analyze—not a command to buy or sell technology.
