Rebalancing after a sharp rally means restoring the asset mix your plan calls for—not automatically selling because prices rose. First confirm that your target allocation still fits your goals, time horizon, risk tolerance and financial situation. Then measure each holding or asset class against that target, apply a calendar or threshold rule you chose in advance, and select the least costly implementation: redirect new contributions, buy underweight assets, or sell overweight positions and reinvest the proceeds.
A rally can change your portfolio’s risk even when you have not traded. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) gives an illustrative example in which stocks rise from 60% of a portfolio to 80% after a market increase. That is a hypothetical example, not a reported market statistic or a prediction. Rebalancing is general educational information, not individualized investment or tax advice.

Why a rally can make your portfolio riskier
Asset allocation is the percentage of your portfolio invested in broad categories such as stocks, bonds and cash. Your target allocation is the mix selected for your objectives and capacity to withstand losses. Market prices move those percentages even if you never place an order.

If stocks rise sharply while bonds do not, the stock position becomes a larger share of the total. The SEC’s 60%-to-80% illustration shows how a market gain can leave an investor with a materially different risk profile. The dollar value of the account may be higher, but the investor now has more exposure to a future stock decline than the original plan assumed.

Rebalancing is the process of bringing the portfolio back to its intended allocation. It is not a forecast that the recent winner will fall, and it is not a performance contest among asset classes. The objective is to keep the portfolio aligned with the plan you have decided is appropriate.
Step 1: Confirm that the target allocation is still right
Do not treat a recent rally as evidence that your long-term target should change. A target may need review when your circumstances change, not merely because one category performed well.
Review the four factors that can justify a new target
- Goal: A house purchase, education expense, retirement spending need or other objective can alter the amount of risk you can take.
- Time horizon: A shorter period before you need the money generally leaves less time to recover from a severe decline.
- Risk tolerance and capacity: Your willingness and financial ability to withstand losses may differ from when the allocation was set.
- Financial circumstances: Income, emergency savings, debt, insurance, tax status or a change in employment can affect the appropriate mix.
If one of these has changed, revisit the investment plan before calculating trades. Mechanically restoring an outdated target can leave you with an allocation that no longer serves your goal. The SEC’s investor education guidance treats allocation decisions as connected to objectives, time horizon and risk tolerance rather than to a single market move.

Specify the percentages you intend to hold in each broad category and, where relevant, the subcategories within it. For example, a plan might distinguish domestic stocks, international stocks, high-quality bonds and cash. Use the same definitions when measuring your current holdings; otherwise, a category can appear on target while a concentrated position hides inside it.
Step 2: Measure the actual drift
Collect the current market value of every account included in your plan. Add the values, then divide each category’s value by the portfolio total. Compare the resulting weight with the target weight.
Current weight = category market value ÷ total portfolio market value × 100

Drift in percentage points = current weight − target weight
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

A positive result is an overweight; a negative result is an underweight. Use percentage points, not a percentage change, when discussing allocation drift. A move from a 60% target to a 66% actual weight is a 6-percentage-point overweight.
Check both asset allocation and concentration
Broad allocation is only the first check. The SEC also advises reviewing the investments within each category. A portfolio can have the right overall stock percentage but still be dominated by one company, sector, country, maturity range or fund. Decide whether your written plan includes concentration limits or sub-targets, and measure those separately.
Example calculation
Assume a $100,000 portfolio has a 60% stock target and a 40% bond target. After a rally, stocks are worth $80,000 and bonds $40,000, for a $120,000 total. Stocks now represent 66.7% of the portfolio and bonds 33.3%. The stock drift is 6.7 percentage points above target. This simplified calculation illustrates the mechanics; it is not a recommendation to trade at that exact level.
Step 3: Choose a rule before deciding to trade
Two common frameworks are a calendar review and a preset allocation threshold. The SEC cites six- or twelve-month reviews as examples used by some experts and says rebalancing tends to work best relatively infrequently. Those examples are not a universal schedule, and a review does not automatically require a transaction.
| Approach | How it works | When it may fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calendar review | Check the portfolio on a recurring date, such as every six or twelve months. | You want a simple reminder and a consistent process. | The date arrives even when drift is small; inspect the allocation first rather than trading automatically. The SEC does not say that every scheduled review requires a trade. |
| Preset allocation threshold | Act only when a category moves outside a band you selected in advance. | You want action tied to portfolio drift rather than to a date. | You must choose a band that suits your plan. Official guidance does not establish one best threshold for every investor. |
Either rule can reduce impulse decisions after dramatic headlines. Record the target mix, review date or threshold, the accounts covered and the method you expect to use. Revisit the rule when your goals or circumstances change, not after every winning or losing day.

Step 4: Select an implementation method
Rebalancing does not require selling. Match the method to the size of the drift, the cash you expect to invest, account type, transaction costs and tax consequences.
| Method | Procedure | Best fit | Limitation to weigh |
|---|---|---|---|
| Redirect new contributions | Send payroll deferrals, automatic deposits or other incoming money to underweight categories until the mix moves toward target. | You invest regularly and the drift is moderate. | It may not correct a large overweight quickly because it relies on future deposits. |
| Buy underweight assets | Use available cash to purchase categories below target without selling the overweight position. | You have investable cash and want to avoid some sales. | Purchases can still carry trading costs, product expenses or tax effects depending on the account and instrument, and cash may be limited. |
| Sell overweight holdings and buy underweights | Reduce the category above target, then invest proceeds in categories below target. | The drift is substantial or you need the allocation corrected promptly. | A sale can create commissions, spreads, other transaction costs or taxable gains. Review consequences before placing orders. |
Use contributions first when they can do the job
Directing new money to underweights can reduce the number of sales. It also lets you make progress without realizing gains in a taxable account. Do not assume it is cost-free: purchases can have fees or product expenses, and the method may leave a substantial overweight in place for longer.
Sell only the amount needed for the rule
If selling is appropriate, calculate the dollar amount needed to move back within your target or threshold rather than liquidating an entire position by default. Consider whether the sale should come from a broad fund, a concentrated holding or another exposure that creates the greatest risk relative to your plan. The decision depends on your written allocation and account facts.

The SEC advises considering transaction fees and tax consequences before choosing a rebalancing method. The same trade can have different results in a taxable brokerage account, an individual retirement account or an employer plan.
Taxable accounts
Selling an appreciated holding can realize a capital gain. The tax rate and reporting result depend on factors such as holding period, basis, income and the tax year. A purchase without a sale can avoid realizing that particular gain, but it does not eliminate product costs or all tax considerations. Check the rules that apply to your jurisdiction and situation before trading.
Tax-advantaged accounts
Retirement and other tax-advantaged accounts may treat trades differently from taxable accounts, but account-specific rules still apply. A transaction that appears tax-neutral can have other consequences, including plan restrictions, fees or a change in the investments available. Read the account documentation or obtain professional advice when the treatment is unclear.

Wash-sale rule when selling at a loss
IRS Publication 550 (2025) describes a wash sale when an investor sells stock or securities at a loss and acquires substantially identical stock or securities within 30 days before or after the sale. The rule can involve purchases in another account and depends on the facts; it is not accurate to label every similar fund purchase a wash sale automatically.
If loss harvesting is part of your plan, review the 30-day window across relevant accounts, identify whether the replacement is substantially identical, and keep records of dates, quantities and basis. Because the statutory test is fact-specific and tax rules change, consult a qualified tax professional when the result is material or uncertain.
Trading and product costs
Compare commissions, bid-ask spreads, account fees and any fund or product expenses. An automated service may advertise a management fee while the underlying products have separate costs. Ask for the total cost of implementing and maintaining the allocation, not just the headline fee.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you sell stocks after a rally?
A rally by itself does not answer that question. Sell only when the sale is part of restoring a still-appropriate target, reducing a concentration that your plan does not permit, meeting a cash need or implementing another deliberate objective. Selling because a price has risen can turn a strategic allocation decision into a market-timing bet.
Use the measured drift and your preselected rule. If the portfolio remains within the band you chose, a review may end with documentation rather than an order. If it is outside the band, compare the contribution, purchase and sale options after checking costs and taxes.
How to rebalance without selling
- Confirm that your target allocation remains appropriate.
- Calculate current weights and identify each underweight category.
- Pause or redirect new contributions toward those categories.
- If you have additional cash, buy the underweight categories in the proportions needed by your plan.
- Recalculate the portfolio after trades and record the new weights.
- Use your calendar or threshold rule to determine when to review again.
This approach can reduce realized gains, but it may not fully correct a large drift quickly. It also cannot remove the risk of the overweight assets while you wait for contributions to catch up.

Automated rebalancing and robo-advice: questions to ask
Automation can monitor weights and place trades, but it does not make the underlying allocation appropriate for you. Before using an automated adviser, ask:
- How often does it check and rebalance?
- What percentage drift or other event triggers a trade?
- Does it use new contributions before selling?
- How does it select lots and manage realized gains in taxable accounts?
- How does it handle potential wash-sale issues, including purchases in other accounts?
- What are the management fee, trading costs and expenses of the underlying products?
- Can you see the target allocation, transaction history and tax documents?
These questions help compare services on process and total cost. They do not establish that an automated approach will produce better returns than a disciplined manual plan.
Common mistakes after a sharp rally
- Changing the target because of performance: A recent winner can be overweight without becoming a suitable permanent allocation.
- Trading before measuring: Headlines do not reveal your actual account weights, especially when multiple accounts or asset categories are involved.
- Ignoring holdings inside a category: An on-target stock percentage can conceal a single-company or sector concentration.
- Using an unplanned threshold: Choosing a band only after prices move invites a rule designed around the latest outcome.
- Assuming contributions solve every drift: New money may be insufficient to correct a large overweight within a reasonable period.
- Overlooking taxes and fees: A theoretically correct trade can be inefficient after spreads, commissions, product costs or realized gains.
- Misapplying the wash-sale rule: The 30-day period and substantially-identical test are fact-specific and can include relevant accounts beyond the one used for the sale.
- Rebalancing too often: Frequent trades can increase costs and turn maintenance into an emotional reaction to market noise. The SEC describes relatively infrequent rebalancing as generally preferable to constant adjustments.
A practical rebalancing checklist
- State the plan: Write the target percentages and any concentration limits.
- Confirm suitability: Check goals, time horizon, risk tolerance and financial circumstances.
- Gather values: Include every account and use current market values.
- Calculate drift: Express each difference in percentage points.
- Inspect subcategories: Look for concentration within stocks, bonds or other broad groups.
- Apply the rule: Use the calendar date or threshold selected in advance.
- Choose the least disruptive method: Redirect contributions, buy underweights or sell and reinvest.
- Review costs and taxes: Check fees, spreads, product expenses, gains and any wash-sale implications.
- Place and verify orders: Confirm quantities, prices, settlement and the resulting allocation.
- Document the decision: Record the date, weights, trades, reasons and next review trigger.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
SEC Investor.gov material supports rebalancing as a way to return to an original asset-allocation mix and presents six- and twelve-month reviews as examples used by some experts. It does not identify a universally correct threshold, schedule or trading method for every investor, and it does not promise improved returns from rebalancing.
