How to rebalance your portfolio after a Nifty correction

By TheFinanceBase Team 10 min read

A Nifty correction is not, by itself, a signal to buy more shares or change your investment mix. Rebalancing means bringing your portfolio back toward a target allocation that still fits your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. Check the drift against a rule you chose in advance, then weigh cash-flow rebalancing against selling and buying after considering costs, taxes and concentration risk.

This guide explains a disciplined process for Indian investors. It is general information, not personalised investment advice; your appropriate allocation and transaction choices depend on your circumstances.

Start with the allocation plan, not the market headline

Write down the allocation you intended to hold before looking at what the Nifty did. A plan normally specifies percentages for broad asset classes such as equity, fixed income and cash, and may also set limits for particular funds, sectors or individual securities. The reason for each percentage matters: the money’s purpose, the date it will be needed, your ability to tolerate losses and your willingness to keep investing during them.

SEBI investor guidance describes allocation as a function of goals, risk tolerance, time horizon and market outlook, and recommends reviewing and rebalancing so the mix remains aligned with those objectives. That is different from reacting to a single index move. If your goal date has moved closer, your income has become less secure or your tolerance for losses has changed, reassess the plan itself before restoring old percentages.

  • Constraints: record liquidity needs, emergency reserves, account rules and any tax or fee effects of trading.

A correction can make an unchanged portfolio look different from the plan, but it does not make equity risk disappear. A lower index level can be followed by further declines, and diversification cannot remove market-wide volatility.

How a Nifty correction changes your portfolio weights

Portfolio percentages move because assets earn different returns, not because you changed your instructions. Suppose a hypothetical portfolio starts at 60% equity, 30% debt and 10% cash. If equity falls while debt and cash are unchanged, equity becomes a smaller percentage of the total. If equity subsequently rebounds, the same portfolio can become equity-heavy without another trade.

Look at two types of drift:

  • Asset-class drift: the combined equity, debt and cash weights differ from their targets.
  • Within-equity concentration: one company, sector, market-cap segment or thematic fund has become too large even if total equity is on target.

SEBI’s general risk guidance emphasises matching investments to the time when money will be needed. It also notes that diversification can limit the effect of an individual holding’s poor performance, while not protecting against a broad market decline. Therefore, a Nifty correction may reduce a concentration created by previous equity gains, but it may also reveal that your portfolio was never diversified enough within equity.

Calculate your current allocation before deciding

Use the same valuation date for every holding. Include mutual funds, exchange-traded products, direct shares, bonds, deposits, cash and any other investment that belongs to the goal. Do not compare a target that includes emergency cash with a current figure that excludes it.

  1. List holdings: record the current value, account, asset class and any sub-category you use for risk control.
  2. Set the denominator: add the values of all investments covered by the target. Decide explicitly whether emergency savings or employer-linked assets are outside the portfolio.
  3. Compute each weight: divide a holding or asset-class value by the portfolio total and multiply by 100.
  4. Measure drift: subtract the target percentage from the current percentage. A positive result is overweight; a negative result is underweight.
  5. Check concentration: calculate each security and sector as a share of total equity, not merely as a share of the one fund that owns it.
  6. Record liquidity: mark money needed soon separately from long-term capital, because a nominally diversified portfolio can still be unsuitable for a near-term withdrawal.

Use a spreadsheet or your investment platform’s holdings report, but verify how it classifies hybrid, dynamic-allocation and international funds. A fund label alone may not tell you the exposure you need for your target.

Set a review rule before you trade

There is no universal interval or drift percentage that suits every investor. A rule can be calendar-based, threshold-based or a combination:

Calendar review

Choose a recurring date to inspect the allocation, such as a date connected to your annual financial review. A calendar check creates a prompt even when markets are quiet, but it can lead to trades when drift is immaterial. The schedule is a review reminder, not an instruction to transact every time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Threshold review

Set a maximum acceptable deviation for each asset class or holding. Review when the deviation exceeds that limit, then decide whether the trade is proportionate to the benefit. A single percentage should not automatically apply to every asset: a concentrated security may deserve a tighter limit than a broad asset class.

Combined rule

Many investors review on a schedule and act only when a threshold is crossed. Write down the rule, the valuation date, and what counts as a breach. Pre-committing reduces the temptation to change allocation solely because one asset class recently outperformed or underperformed.

Your rule is a control mechanism, not a promise of higher returns. Neither a calendar nor a threshold can predict the next Nifty move.

Should you buy more equity after the market falls?

Only if your calculation shows that equity is below a still-appropriate target and your rule says the drift warrants action. A falling index does not establish that shares are cheap, that the correction is over or that your risk capacity has increased. If your circumstances have changed, buying more equity merely to restore an old percentage can make the portfolio less suitable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask three questions in order:

  1. Is the target allocation still appropriate for the goal, horizon and risk tolerance?
  2. Is the current deviation large enough under my written rule to justify action?
  3. Can I fund the change without compromising emergency liquidity or accepting costs and taxes I have not assessed?

If any answer is no, documenting the decision to wait can be more disciplined than making a trade. Continuing regular contributions according to the plan is not the same as attempting to time a bottom.

Ways to bring the portfolio back to target

Two broad approaches are available. The appropriate choice depends on the size of the drift, the cash available, the products held and the tax and fee consequences.

Method How it works Useful when Points to check
Direct new money Send new contributions, dividends or maturing cash to underweight assets while leaving overweight holdings in place. Cash is available, the drift is moderate and selling would create avoidable costs or taxable gains. Contribution size, timing, whether cash is genuinely available, and whether the portfolio remains outside the rule for too long.
Redirect recurring contributions Change the split of future systematic investments toward underweight categories until weights move closer to target. Income is regular and the investor can correct gradually. Fund mandates, minimum amounts, overlap among funds and the effect on concentration.
Sell and buy Sell part of overweight holdings and purchase underweight assets in the same review. Drift is substantial, cash flow is insufficient or a holding breaches a risk limit. Brokerage and other transaction charges, bid-ask spreads, exit loads where applicable, tax treatment, settlement and the risk of leaving proceeds uninvested.
Partial combination Use available contributions first, then sell only enough of an overweight position to close the remaining gap. You need a faster correction but want to reduce the amount sold. Whether the residual drift still meets your rule and whether several small trades cost more than one planned transaction.

Directing new money is not automatically superior. It may leave a concentrated or materially overweight position untouched, while selling can crystallise gains or losses. Compare the two routes using the same target, valuation date and risk objective.

Check fees, taxes and execution details

Before placing an order, obtain the current charges and tax treatment for the specific product and account. The applicable Indian rules, rates, holding-period definitions and exemptions can change, and they differ by security type and investor circumstances. No single tax outcome is established for every Indian investor.

Review diversification inside the equity allocation

Restoring an equity percentage does not automatically restore a sensible portfolio. Two funds can hold many of the same large companies, and a broad index allocation can sit alongside a single-stock position that dominates the risk. Examine exposure by company, sector, market-cap segment and geography where relevant.

  • Identify duplicate top holdings across funds.
  • Separate diversified core exposure from narrowly focused or thematic exposure.
  • Set a personal limit for any one security or sector if a large loss would threaten the goal.
  • Check whether debt instruments have issuer, maturity or credit concentration.
  • Match liquidity to the withdrawal schedule; an asset can be diversified yet difficult to sell when needed.

Diversification limits the impact of an individual holding’s poor performance, but it cannot prevent a broad fall in equity markets. Your target should describe the risk you can live with, not just the number of funds you own.

A worked, illustrative decision

Consider a hypothetical investor whose written target is 60% equity, 30% debt and 10% cash. After a Nifty decline, the portfolio is 54% equity, 34% debt and 12% cash. The investor first confirms that the target still fits a long-term goal and that the six-percentage-point equity shortfall exceeds the preselected action threshold.

Next, the investor checks whether upcoming contributions can close the gap without selling. If regular contributions are large enough, they can be directed to equity while debt and cash are left alone. If the gap is too large or the investor’s rule requires prompt correction, the investor compares the cost and tax effect of selling some debt or cash against the effect of new contributions. The example does not imply that 60/30/10, a six-point threshold or any particular trade is suitable for another person.

If the same investor had recently shortened the goal horizon or lost emergency reserves, the correct response could be to revise the target rather than buy equity. The arithmetic is unchanged; the decision is different because the plan changed.

Document the decision and the next review

Keep a dated record containing the target, current weights, drift, rule applied, chosen method, expected costs and the reason the target still fits. Note whether the action used new money, sales, purchases or a combination. Record the next review date or the condition that will trigger another review.

This log helps distinguish a rules-based adjustment from a prediction about the next market move. It also makes it easier to spot repeated threshold breaches, persistent concentration or a target that no longer matches your life.

Do not confuse fund-manager rules with your personal deadline

SEBI’s March 30, 2022 circular discusses what mutual-fund schemes and their managers should do when passive market movements cause a scheme to deviate from asset-allocation limits stated in its documents. The circular describes a process for those schemes; it is not a general deadline requiring an individual to rebalance a personal portfolio.

A reference to thirty business days in that regulatory context should not be applied to your own holdings without checking the latest circular, the scheme’s current disclosures and the precise breach being discussed. Fund-level compliance and an investor’s goal-based allocation are separate questions.

Common mistakes after a correction

  • Trading from the index chart: assuming a percentage fall predicts a rebound or identifies a bottom.
  • Restoring an obsolete target: ignoring a changed goal, horizon, income or risk tolerance.
  • Counting funds instead of exposures: mistaking several overlapping funds for genuine diversification.
  • Ignoring the denominator: excluding cash, debt or external accounts from current weights while including them in the target.
  • Forgetting taxes and charges: comparing only headline prices and not the net result of a sale.
  • Over-correcting: making many small trades that add cost without materially improving risk.
  • Using a fund rule as personal advice: treating a scheme-compliance timeline as an investor instruction.
  • Investing emergency money: allowing a rebalancing decision to jeopardise near-term obligations.

When professional help may be appropriate

Consider speaking with a SEBI-registered investment adviser if your holdings span several accounts, you face complex tax or estate issues, you cannot define a target, or repeated emotional decisions keep overriding your rule. Verify the adviser’s current SEBI registration and understand the scope and fees of the engagement. A professional can help apply your objectives and constraints; no adviser can guarantee the direction of the Nifty or eliminate investment risk.

If you manage the portfolio yourself, a written target, a measured drift calculation, a preselected review rule and a documented cost check provide a practical framework without requiring a forecast.
