A market decline changes portfolio percentages unevenly; it does not, by itself, tell you whether stocks, bonds, or cash are now too high. Add every account, calculate each major asset class as a share of the total, compare those figures with your target allocation, and choose the least costly way to correct any material drift.
Rebalancing is risk control, not a forecast. It returns the portfolio to the level of stock, bond, and cash exposure you selected for your goals, time horizon, risk tolerance, and near-term spending needs.

What a sharp drop changes in a portfolio
Asset classes rarely move by the same amount. If stocks fall while high-quality bonds and cash are stable, the stock percentage shrinks and the bond-and-cash percentage grows. If bonds fall more than stocks, the opposite can happen. A concentrated holding can also dominate the result. Therefore, never assume that a crash automatically leaves you underweight stocks or that buying stocks is automatically the correct response.
Rebalancing means bringing the portfolio back in line with its target asset allocation. Fidelity Viewpoints defines it as “the process of bringing your portfolio in line with your targeted asset allocation.” The target is the mix established in your investment plan, such as 70% stocks and 30% bonds, rather than whatever mix happened to produce the best recent return.

The SEC’s investor-education guidance frames the discipline as moving money away from an asset category that has done well toward one that has done poorly. That can feel uncomfortable, but the purpose is to preserve the plan’s intended risk level. Vanguard similarly says rebalancing is not market timing; it is a way to keep a strategy aligned with long-term goals.
First decide whether the target allocation is still right
A price decline is not a reason to rewrite the plan. Change the target only when your circumstances have changed, such as a shorter investment horizon, a new need for cash, a different ability to tolerate losses, or a major change in income or liabilities. If only market prices changed, keep the existing target and evaluate drift against it.
Questions to answer before trading
- What goal is this money funding, and when will withdrawals begin?
- Has your time horizon shortened enough that the original stock exposure is no longer suitable?
- Can you continue making required payments and meet near-term cash needs without selling long-term investments?
- Did your income, emergency reserve, debt, or dependents change your ability to withstand another decline?
- Does your written plan specify target percentages, acceptable bands, and a review date?
If the answers show that the plan itself needs revision, establish the new allocation first. Do not describe that strategic change as a routine rebalance: it is a new investment decision that should be documented separately.
Calculate your actual allocation and drift
Use current market values, not the amounts originally invested. Include all accounts that are managed as one household portfolio, plus cash, concentrated positions, employer plans, and other major holdings. Identify broad asset classes consistently; for example, decide in advance how you will classify a balanced fund or a short-term bond fund.
A repeatable calculation
- Download or record the current value of every holding in each account.
- Assign each holding to the asset class used by your plan: stocks, bonds, cash, or another category the plan specifically includes.
- Add the values to obtain the portfolio total.
- For each class, divide its value by the total and multiply by 100 to obtain its current percentage.
- Subtract the target percentage from the current percentage. The result is the drift in percentage points.
- Check whether any single security or sector is large enough to create a concentration risk even if the broad asset-class percentages look acceptable.
For example, a portfolio can be close to its stock target while one company represents an outsized share of the stock allocation. Treat that concentration as a separate risk decision and follow the plan’s rules for it.

Choose a written rebalancing trigger
Use a rule that can be followed during both rising and falling markets. Two common approaches are a percentage-point band and a calendar review.
Percentage-point bands
A band specifies how far an asset class may move from its target before you act. Vanguard illustrates a 70/30 portfolio (70% stocks and 30% bonds) drifting to 76/24 and uses a five-percentage-point trigger. In that illustration, the six-point stock drift exceeds the stated band, so the portfolio would be brought back toward its target. The example is a rule demonstration, not a prediction or a performance result.
Recommended Free Tools
Write the band beside each target, because a five-point movement has a different meaning for a 10% allocation than for a 70% allocation. Decide whether the trigger applies to each asset class separately, to the total stock-versus-bond split, or to both.
Calendar reviews
A schedule—such as a regular annual or semiannual review—reduces the temptation to react to headlines. Fidelity recommends checking especially after sharp market moves, while Vanguard emphasizes a schedule that is easy to follow. A calendar rule can be combined with a band: review on set dates and act sooner only when a band is breached.
Do not create a rule you will abandon when markets are stressful. Put the trigger, review frequency, and permitted methods in the investment policy statement or another durable record.

Pick the least disruptive way to restore the mix
The SEC and Vanguard identify three basic tools: direct new money to underweight assets, sell overweight assets and buy underweight assets, or change the direction of contributions. The right combination depends on the size of the drift, available cash flows, account type, taxes, and trading costs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Method | Useful when | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| New contributions or cash flows | You have regular savings, dividends, interest, or planned withdrawals | It may take longer to close a large drift |
| Trades inside tax-advantaged accounts | The allocation is materially off target and suitable assets are available there | Account menus or transaction constraints may apply |
| Partial rebalance in a taxable account | A full sale would realize large gains | Some drift remains |
| Full rebalance | The drift is large and tax and cost effects are acceptable | More realized gains, costs, and behavioral stress |
| Automated advice or a target-date solution | You want rules-based monitoring and execution | Fees, investment menus, and service eligibility require review |
Use cash flows first when they are sufficient
Change the destination of new payroll contributions, transfers, dividends, and interest so that money flows to underweight classes. If you are taking withdrawals, take them first from overweight classes when that is consistent with the account’s tax and income rules. This can reduce selling and may close a modest gap without realizing a gain.
Trade only what is needed
When cash flows cannot correct the drift, sell enough of an overweight holding and buy enough of an underweight holding to move toward the target. “Toward” matters: the plan’s trigger, tax cost, and transaction expenses may justify a partial correction rather than an exact target on one trading day.
Keep the strategy constant
Use diversified holdings that fit the existing plan. Do not turn a rebalance into an unplanned switch from diversified funds to a handful of speculative securities, a new sector bet, or a different risk model. A rebalance changes quantities, not the investment thesis, unless you deliberately approve a new strategy.
Account type and taxes can change the implementation
Tax-advantaged accounts
Retirement and other tax-advantaged accounts generally make allocation changes simpler because trades typically do not create a current taxable capital gain in the account. You still need to check the plan’s investment menu, trading restrictions, settlement procedures, and any account-specific fees. A tax advantage does not eliminate investment risk or make every available fund suitable.

Taxable accounts
Before selling, inspect each lot’s cost basis, the gain or loss that would be realized, transaction costs, and the resulting tax effect. A full rebalance can create a larger tax bill than a partial rebalance or a cash-flow-only approach. You may be able to correct part of the drift in retirement accounts and direct new taxable-account money to the underweight class, but the accounts must still be viewed together so that the household allocation is measured accurately.
Keep records of which holdings were sold, the amounts, the realized result, and the reason for the trade. Tax rules depend on your jurisdiction and circumstances; consult a qualified tax professional when the proposed sales are large or your situation is complex.
Step-by-step procedure after a market drop
- Pause before reacting. Wait until you can read the investment plan and distinguish a market move from a change in your circumstances.
- Set the scope. List every account, holding, cash balance, and concentrated position included in the household allocation.
- Classify holdings. Apply the same asset-class definitions used when the target was created.
- Calculate percentages. Divide each class’s current value by the combined portfolio value and record the percentage-point drift.
- Apply the trigger. Compare each result with the written band or determine whether the scheduled review calls for action. Vanguard’s 70/30-to-76/24 illustration exceeds its five-point example threshold.
- Check liquidity. Set aside money required for near-term spending and verify that rebalancing will not force an unsuitable sale to meet a bill.
- Choose the account and method. Prefer contributions, dividends, interest, and withdrawals where they can close the gap; use tax-advantaged accounts when appropriate; then evaluate partial or full taxable sales.
- Estimate consequences. Review cost basis, realized gains or losses, commissions or spreads, fund transaction charges, and account restrictions before submitting orders.
- Place trades consistent with the plan. Buy the underweight class and reduce the overweight class only as much as the rule requires. Use broad, diversified holdings already approved by the plan.
- Verify execution. Check fills, quantities, settlement, and the resulting percentages. Correct an accidental order promptly through the account provider’s established process.
- Document the decision. Record the date, pre-trade allocation, trigger, trades, costs, tax considerations, post-trade allocation, and next review date.
How to think about “buying the dip”
Buying more stocks after a decline can be the mechanical result of rebalancing when stocks are below their target weight. It is not a separate prediction that prices will rise soon. The same rule requires selling or redirecting money away from an asset class that has become overweight, even when that asset class feels safer or more popular.
The SEC’s illustrative example shows a stock allocation moving from 60% to 80% after market gains. That example demonstrates why drift can matter; it is not a forecast, return statistic, or instruction to hold 60% stocks. Your own target and trigger determine whether action is warranted.

Situations that require extra care
The decline affected only one portion of the portfolio
Calculate at the security and asset-class levels. A drop in a single sector or company can create concentration even if the broad stock percentage remains near target. Correcting that exposure may involve a different decision from restoring the stock-versus-bond split.
You hold several accounts with different tax treatments
Measure the allocation across the full household, then decide where each trade causes the least tax and cost. One account may be the efficient place to adjust bonds while another holds the available cash or contribution flow. Record the household result, not just the percentage shown on one account statement.
You need the money soon
Do not force a long-term risk allocation onto money needed for near-term expenses. Reassess the goal’s time horizon and cash reserve first. If that changes the plan, set a new target and document it rather than labeling the shift a routine rebalance.

Stop and write one before trading. At minimum, specify the desired asset classes, target percentages, acceptable drift, review schedule, treatment of cash, and the accounts included. Without those decisions, a trade after a drop is an emotional market call rather than a rebalance.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Assuming the direction of drift: Recalculate percentages; the asset that fell may still be overweight if it started with a large allocation.
- Changing targets because of headlines: Separate a genuine change in goals or risk capacity from a temporary price move.
- Ignoring cash and concentrated holdings: Include both in the total and test for single-security exposure.
- Rebalancing one account in isolation: Combine all accounts that fund the same objective before deciding what to trade.
- Selling without checking basis and costs: Estimate the realized tax effect and transaction expenses first.
- Trading to an exact percentage unnecessarily: A partial correction can satisfy the trigger while reducing tax and behavioral costs.
- Using the event to change strategy: Keep the approved diversified holdings unless you intentionally adopt and document a new strategy.
- Checking constantly: Follow the written band and calendar rather than reacting to every daily move.
Automation and ongoing maintenance
A portfolio-checkup tool, automated rebalancing service, or target-date solution can monitor allocations and execute rules for investors who prefer less manual work. Review the service’s fees, investment menu, eligibility, tax handling, frequency, and ability to include outside accounts before enrolling. Automation does not decide whether your target still fits your goals; you remain responsible for that judgment.
After each rebalance, set the next review date and keep the allocation record with your broader financial plan. Revisit the target when your goal, horizon, cash needs, income, or risk tolerance changes; otherwise, let the written trigger—not the emotional intensity of the latest market move—govern the next action.
