How to Rebalance a Tech-Heavy Portfolio When One Sector Surges

Do not sell technology stocks merely because they rose. First compare your portfolio with the asset allocation you deliberately chose for your goal, time horizon and risk tolerance. If technology now exceeds that target or its permitted range, rebalance back toward the plan. You are restoring a risk level, not predicting that technology will fall.

The practical process is to measure total technology exposure—including overlapping holdings inside funds—then choose whether to sell part of the overweight, direct new cash to underweight areas, or redirect future contributions. Check transaction costs and possible tax consequences before placing trades.

What a technology surge changes in your portfolio

A portfolio can become more aggressive without any new trade. If technology shares rise faster than your other holdings, their percentage of the portfolio increases. That changes the portfolio’s mix and can make its results more dependent on one sector, even if the investor’s original plan was diversified.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Investor.gov describes rebalancing as “bringing your portfolio back to its original asset allocation mix.” In that sense, rebalancing is a risk-control task. It is not a claim that technology is currently overvalued, and it is not a forecast that the recent winner must reverse.

There is no universally correct technology percentage. A suitable allocation depends on circumstances that are not supplied by a headline: the purpose of the money, when it will be needed, the investor’s ability to tolerate losses, income needs and other assets. A sector rally alone is not a reason to rewrite the plan.

Start with the target you already chose

Write down the intended mix

Find the investment policy, account plan or personal allocation you were using before the surge. Record the target percentages for major asset classes and, if you set one, a permitted range around each target. For example, your plan might specify a percentage for stocks, another for bonds and cash, and a limit for any single sector. The exact figures must come from your own plan; they cannot be inferred from the market’s recent performance.

Also note whether your target is expressed as a point or a band. A point gives one destination, such as a stated percentage. A band allows the holding to move within a range before a trade is required. Knowing which rule you adopted prevents an emotional decision from becoming an accidental change in strategy.

If you never set a target

Do not invent a “normal” technology weight by copying a generic model. Selecting an allocation requires a personal assessment of goals, time horizon, financial situation and risk tolerance. You can document those factors and obtain appropriately tailored guidance, but a one-size-fits-all percentage is not established by the SEC material used for this guide.

Measure your real technology exposure

Include direct holdings and funds

List every account and security, then calculate how much of the total portfolio is exposed to technology. Count individual technology stocks and the technology portion of diversified funds. A fund’s name is not enough to determine its exposure: examine its current holdings and sector breakdown.

Several funds can own the same large companies. You may hold a broad-market fund, a growth fund and a technology-sector fund that all contain many of the same issuers. Their labels can look diversified while the underlying positions create concentration. Investor.gov specifically advises investors to look through fund holdings and top positions when assessing diversification.

Use a simple weight calculation

For each holding, divide its current market value by the total value of the portfolio. To estimate sector exposure, add the technology weight of each fund to the value of any directly held technology stock, while avoiding double-counting the same dollars. If a fund reports sector percentages, multiply the fund’s portfolio weight by that sector percentage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, suppose a $100,000 portfolio contains $20,000 in a broad fund that is 25% technology, $15,000 in a growth fund that is 40% technology and $10,000 in direct technology shares. The estimated technology exposure is $5,000 plus $6,000 plus $10,000, or $21,000—21% of the portfolio. This is an illustration of the calculation, not a recommended allocation.

Check overlap beyond the sector label

  • Review the largest positions in every fund and compare them with your individual stocks.
  • Check whether multiple funds hold the same companies or closely related industries.
  • Separate a fund’s technology exposure from other growth-oriented holdings; a non-technology label does not guarantee low correlation.
  • Record the date of the holdings data, because fund compositions change.

Decide when your plan calls for a review

Two approaches are recognized in SEC investor education: review on a calendar and review when an allocation moves beyond a pre-set threshold. Neither is established as best for every portfolio. Choose the rule that matches the plan you can follow consistently.

Review rule How it works Practical trade-off
Calendar review Check the allocation at a regular interval, such as every six or twelve months. Simple to administer and less likely to prompt a reaction to every daily market move, but a drift can remain between review dates.
Threshold review Act when an allocation moves beyond a percentage deviation you selected in advance. Responds to a defined amount of drift, but requires monitoring and can produce more frequent trades if the threshold is tight.

Investor.gov notes that rebalancing generally works best relatively infrequently. That observation does not set a mandatory interval or threshold. The important discipline is to choose a rule before the next surge or decline, apply it to the whole portfolio and avoid changing it simply because a sector has recently performed well.

Choose an implementation method

Once you know the target and the measured drift, there are three basic ways to move back toward the plan. The right choice depends on available cash, account type, trading costs and possible tax effects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Method What you do When it may fit What to check first
Sell overweight holdings and buy underweights Reduce technology or another overweight position, then purchase the assets that are below target. You need to correct the mix now and no suitable new cash is available. Transaction fees, bid-ask costs and potential tax consequences from selling.
Use new cash for underweight assets Invest a deposit, dividend or other available cash in the underweight areas instead of adding to technology. New money is available and the drift can be corrected without selling. Whether the contribution is large enough to bring the portfolio within its target range; buying still has costs and risks.
Redirect ongoing contributions Change future deposits or automatic purchases so they favor underweight holdings until the mix moves toward target. You contribute regularly and the deviation is moderate. Contribution instructions, timing and whether the plan permits the required allocation changes.

Method 1: Sell and buy

Calculate the dollar amount needed to reduce the overweight and the amount needed in each underweight category. Place only the trades required to approach the chosen target or band. Selling every technology position is not implied; the adjustment can be partial. A written order of operations helps prevent a rally from turning into an all-or-nothing decision.

Method 2: Direct new cash

New deposits can be assigned to underweight assets rather than to the sector that has just surged. This changes relative weights as the portfolio grows. It may reduce the need to sell, but it does not automatically eliminate costs or tax issues; the purchase itself may have expenses, and the portfolio can remain outside its chosen range while the cash accumulates.

Method 3: Redirect contributions

If you invest on a schedule, temporarily directing contributions to underweight assets can gradually restore the mix. Keep the rule explicit—such as “all new contributions go to the categories below target until the next review”—and reassess at the next calendar or threshold check. Do not assume this method is fast enough for a large concentration.

Account for fees and taxes before selling

Before rebalancing, consider whether the method will trigger transaction fees or tax consequences. This is a direct warning in the SEC’s Investor.gov guidance. The cost depends on the provider, the security, the account and your individual tax facts; a general article cannot calculate it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Review commissions, fund transaction charges, spreads and any account-specific trading fees.
  • Determine whether the sale occurs in a taxable account or an account with different tax treatment.
  • Identify the tax basis and holding details your tax professional would need to estimate a gain or loss.
  • Consider whether a lower-cost contribution or contribution-redirection route can meet the target without a sale.
  • Do not treat “no commission” as “no cost”; price spreads, fund expenses and tax effects can still matter.

Where an individual tax calculation is necessary, use a qualified tax professional who can evaluate your jurisdiction, account type and complete financial situation. The SEC guide is general investor education, not a calculation of your liability.

A repeatable rebalancing workflow

  1. State the reason for the review. Record that a sector’s weight changed, rather than writing that you believe technology will fall. This keeps the decision tied to risk and the plan.
  2. Retrieve the target allocation. Write each target percentage and its permitted band, if one exists. If no target exists, pause and establish an allocation appropriate to your circumstances before trading.
  3. Collect current values. Download or record the market value of every stock, fund and cash position across the accounts included in the plan.
  4. Look through funds. Use each fund’s holdings and sector data to identify technology exposure and overlapping top positions. Update the date of the information used.
  5. Calculate current weights. Divide each exposure by the total portfolio value, then compare the result with the target or band. Keep a worksheet showing both percentages and dollar amounts.
  6. Set the required adjustment. Determine which positions are above target and which are below it. Do not expand the target because the winning sector has recently risen.
  7. Choose the least disruptive workable route. Compare selling, using new cash and redirecting contributions. Estimate fees and possible tax consequences before submitting orders.
  8. Place and document trades. Save the orders, dates, values and resulting allocation. If using contributions, update the automatic investment instructions and note when they should be reviewed.
  9. Schedule the next check. Put the calendar date or threshold rule in writing. Avoid making another adjustment simply because prices move between planned reviews.

Worked hypothetical example

Assume an investor’s written plan calls for 70% stocks and 30% bonds, with technology limited to 15% of the total portfolio. After a strong technology run, the account is still worth $100,000 but technology exposure has grown to $21,000, or 21%. The investor’s stock-and-bond targets have not changed; only the actual weights have drifted.

The investor first verifies the 21% estimate by reviewing direct holdings and fund overlap. If the plan requires technology to remain at or below 15%, the portfolio is outside its band. The investor could sell enough overweight exposure to move toward 15%, use new deposits for underweight bonds or other stock categories, or redirect future contributions. The choice depends on cash flow, account type, fees and tax consequences.

Investor.gov uses a separate hypothetical illustration in which a stock allocation moves from 60% to 80% after a market increase. That example explains how growth can change a mix; it is not a market statistic, prediction or recommended allocation.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Selling solely because the chart went up

A price increase is not itself a rebalancing trigger. Correct the allocation only when the portfolio has moved outside the rule you selected, or when your personal plan has changed.

Relying on fund names

A broad or growth label does not reveal the full overlap among holdings. Check the underlying positions and sector breakdowns before deciding that you are diversified.

Ignoring the whole portfolio

Rebalancing one account in isolation can leave the household allocation unchanged. Include the accounts and positions covered by your investment plan, while keeping separate goals or time horizons separate when the plan requires it.

Using an undocumented threshold

Deciding after a rally that a holding “looks too large” invites inconsistent action. Write the threshold or calendar rule before the next market move.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming contribution-based rebalancing is cost-free

Directing new cash may avoid a sale, but it does not promise zero expenses or eliminate the possibility that the portfolio remains outside its range for a period of time.

Changing the target after every winner

A target should change when the goal, time horizon, financial situation or risk tolerance changes. A recent sector surge, by itself, is not one of those changes.

When to revise the allocation instead of rebalancing

Rebalancing restores the old plan. Revising the plan is a different decision. Consider a new target only after a meaningful change in the purpose of the money, the date it will be needed, your financial circumstances or your ability and willingness to tolerate risk. Document the reason and the new mix, then use that revised mix as the reference point for future reviews.

Do not use a target revision to rationalize a short-term market call. If the only new fact is that technology has recently surged, the evidence supports checking the existing plan—not declaring a new permanent allocation.

What this guidance can and cannot tell you

This is general, U.S.-oriented investor education based on SEC Investor.gov material and a year-end SEC bulletin dated 2012. The principles—measuring drift, choosing a method and checking fees and tax consequences—remain general planning concepts, but the guidance does not establish a current technology valuation, a preferred sector weight or a personal tax result.

Rebalancing also cannot guarantee a profit, prevent losses or identify which sector will lead next. Its purpose is to keep the portfolio aligned with a chosen risk and asset-allocation plan. If the numbers, tax treatment or account rules are complex, obtain advice tailored to your circumstances before trading.
