First compare your current mix with a written target based on your goals, time horizon, risk tolerance and financial situation. Then reduce only the excess, using new contributions, carefully selected sales, or a combination. In a taxable account, include capital-gains consequences, applicable wash-sale constraints and trading costs before placing orders.
Start with your investment plan, not the headline
The immediate question is not whether AI stocks will recover. It is whether your portfolio still represents the risk you deliberately chose. The SEC defines rebalancing as “bringing your portfolio back to your original asset allocation mix.” That makes a selloff a reason to check drift against your plan, not an automatic reason to replace the plan.

When the target allocation has not changed
If your income, emergency reserves, goals, time horizon and tolerance for losses are substantially the same, keep the written stock, bond and cash targets you established before the selloff. A technology rally may have pushed you above the stock or sector weight you intended; a subsequent decline may have reduced the excess without eliminating it. Measure first, then trade only enough to restore the chosen ranges.

When your circumstances have changed
A genuine change in circumstances can justify a new target. Examples include a shorter time horizon, a new withdrawal need, a job change that increases your exposure to the technology industry, a reduced emergency fund, or a lower ability to tolerate losses. Change the allocation because the underlying plan changed, not because a market forecast feels compelling.

Write down a target allocation before deciding what to sell
Your target should state the intended proportions of stocks, bonds and cash, plus the boundaries for major regions, sectors and individual securities. It should also identify which account types will hold each asset and how often you will review the mix. The target is a decision made in a calm period; the rebalance is the mechanical step that keeps the portfolio near it.
Questions that determine the target
- Goal and date: Money needed soon generally cannot take the same equity risk as money intended for a distant retirement.
- Time horizon: A longer horizon can support more volatility, but it does not make a concentrated technology position diversified.
- Risk tolerance: Consider the loss you can financially and emotionally withstand without abandoning the plan.
- Financial situation: Include emergency savings, debt, job stability, pensions, concentrated employer stock and other assets outside the brokerage account.
- Cash-flow plan: Expected contributions and withdrawals determine whether you can correct drift without selling.
Record the target in percentages and, if useful, ranges. For example, a plan can specify a broad stock allocation with separate U.S. and international components, a bond allocation, and a maximum for any one company or narrow sector fund. The exact percentages must come from your circumstances; the available guidance does not establish one universal “correct” technology weight.
Measure technology exposure at three levels
A portfolio can look diversified by fund count while remaining heavily exposed to the same technology companies. Audit both the labels and the underlying holdings.

Add the technology-sector allocation in every account, including sector funds and individual shares. Check how each fund classifies communication, semiconductor, software and internet businesses; classifications differ, so use the fund’s current holdings and sector breakdown rather than its name alone.
2. Individual-company concentration
List the percentage represented by each company after combining positions across accounts. Fidelity cautions that 5% of a total portfolio in one stock “could be too risky for your goals” for many investors. That is a warning about concentration, not a statutory limit: your own written maximum may be lower or higher after considering your employment and other exposures.
3. Overlap inside funds
Look through broad index funds, target-date funds and thematic funds to identify repeated holdings. A broad fund can still be concentrated if it is narrowly sector-focused, and owning several funds does not remove overlap. Count the underlying company once when estimating total exposure.

| Audit | What to calculate | Why it matters | Action if above target |
|---|---|---|---|
| Technology and related sectors | Technology holdings plus any adjacent sector exposure defined by your plan | Reveals whether a market move changed the portfolio’s risk profile | Redirect contributions or trim the excess according to your rule |
| Largest individual company | Position value divided by total investable assets | One company can dominate results even when fund count is high | Set or restore a company cap; account for employer stock separately |
| Fund overlap | Aggregate repeated companies across all funds | Prevents a “diversified” label from hiding duplicate exposure | Consolidate or replace overlapping holdings only as needed |
| U.S. versus international | Percent in domestic and non-U.S. equities | Geographic diversification reduces dependence on one market | Direct new money or trades toward the underweight region |
| Market capitalization | Large-, mid- and small-cap exposure across regions | Sector and size concentration can move together | Use broad-market exposure to fill the missing size segment |
How much technology is too much?
There is no evidence-based percentage that is safe for every investor. “Too much” means the exposure is larger than your target or large enough that a loss would prevent you from meeting a goal or sticking with the plan. Assess technology in relation to your total stock allocation, not as a standalone number. A 20% technology weight may be ordinary inside one diversified equity target and extreme inside another.

Also include indirect exposure. If your salary, bonus, pension or employer shares depend on the technology industry, your household exposure is higher than the brokerage statement suggests. A narrow AI fund can add concentration even when the overall stock/bond split remains unchanged.
Choose a rule for when to rebalance
Vanguard describes three workable approaches: calendar-based, threshold-based and a combination of both. The best rule is the one you can follow in a falling market without making an ad hoc forecast.
| Rule | How it works | Strength | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calendar-based | Review and rebalance on a set schedule, such as annually or semiannually | Simple and easy to automate | Can trade when drift is small or leave a large drift between review dates |
| Threshold-based | Trade only when an asset or sector moves outside a preset percentage-point band | Responds to material drift rather than noise | Requires monitoring and a clearly defined band |
| Combined | Review on a schedule and trade only when a threshold is breached | Balances discipline with control of transaction frequency | Needs both a calendar and documented thresholds |
Vanguard’s illustration starts with 70% stocks and 30% bonds. After market movement, the mix drifts to 76% stocks and 24% bonds; a 5-percentage-point trigger would call for rebalancing because the stock weight is six points above target. The figures are an example of a rule, not a recommendation for your portfolio. Define whether the trigger applies to the whole portfolio, each asset class, a region or a sector, and apply it consistently.
Three ways to reduce an AI or technology overweight
The SEC identifies three basic methods. Select the least disruptive method that restores your target without creating an unacceptable tax or cash-flow problem.
| Method | Procedure | Tax and cost profile | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Redirect new money | Send future contributions, dividends or interest to underweight bonds, regions or broad funds until the percentages return to range | Usually avoids realizing a gain because no overweight position is sold; normal fund expenses and trading costs still depend on the investment | Regular contributors with modest drift and a long correction window |
| Sell and buy | Sell enough of the overweight holding, then purchase the underweight assets in the same rebalance | May realize gains or losses and incur trading costs; tax impact depends on account and tax lots | Large drift, no new contributions, or a need to restore risk promptly |
| Combine both | Make a smaller sale now and direct future cash flows to the underweights | Spreads taxable realization and trading over time, but does not eliminate it | Material drift where a full immediate sale would be disruptive |
Do not let the tax bill become an excuse to leave a risk level you cannot accept. Instead, compare the one-time tax cost with the potential consequences of remaining concentrated, and use tax-advantaged accounts or new cash where appropriate.

Compare possible destination allocations before you trade
The destination should be evaluated against the target you wrote down, not chosen merely because it performed well during the selloff. The following are decision frameworks rather than model portfolios.
| Destination style | Technology concentration | Stock/bond mix | U.S. and international exposure | Market-cap breadth | Liquidity | Volatility | Tax impact | Fees | When it matches |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Broad, growth-oriented core | Lower than a dedicated AI or technology sleeve, but not zero | Higher stock share and lower bond share than a balanced plan | Can include both regions; verify the actual split | Broad when the selected funds cover multiple sizes | Generally high for widely traded diversified funds; confirm the vehicle | Higher than a bond-heavy mix | Not stated in the source; depends on account, gains and lots sold | Not stated in the source; depends on the funds | Long horizon and capacity for equity drawdowns |
| Balanced diversified mix | Moderate, with a defined sector ceiling | Meaningful stocks and bonds, sized to the written risk target | U.S. and international holdings can both be represented | Broad across capitalization when funds are selected accordingly | Generally high for mainstream diversified holdings; confirm the vehicle | Lower than a stock-heavy mix | Not stated in the source; taxable sales may still realize gains | Not stated in the source; compare expense ratios before purchase | Investors seeking a steadier ride without abandoning equities |
| Defensive, bond-heavier mix | Small or no dedicated technology tilt | More bonds and fewer stocks than the other styles | Equity portion can still be geographically diversified | Broadness depends on the equity sleeve | Varies by bond vehicle, maturity and market conditions | Lower expected equity volatility, though bonds can fluctuate | Not stated in the source; selling appreciated shares can create a gain | Not stated in the source; compare fund costs | Shorter horizon or lower loss capacity |
For every candidate, ask whether it lowers technology concentration, preserves the total stock/bond mix you can tolerate, adds the intended international and market-cap exposure, and can be traded at an acceptable cost. A broad label is not proof of broad diversification; inspect the holdings.
What to do in a taxable account
Before submitting an order, estimate the realized result for each tax lot you might sell. The SEC specifically directs investors to consider tax consequences and transaction fees when rebalancing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBuild a lot-by-lot estimate
- Record the current market value and your target value for the holding.
- List the available tax lots, their cost basis, holding period and unrealized gain or loss.
- Model several sale combinations, including lots with losses and lots with smaller gains, rather than assuming the brokerage’s default lot order is optimal.
- Estimate the resulting taxable gain or loss under the rules that apply to your jurisdiction and account.
- Add commissions, bid-ask spreads, fund transaction charges and any account-specific fees before comparing methods.
Check wash-sale constraints where applicable
If you sell a position at a loss and buy a substantially identical investment in a related account or within the applicable restricted period, tax treatment may be affected. Review the rule for your jurisdiction, include automatic dividend reinvestment and check all accounts before replacing a losing AI position with a near-duplicate. When the situation is material, obtain tax advice rather than relying on a generic brokerage warning.
Use account location deliberately
Tax-advantaged accounts may allow rebalancing without the same current capital-gains realization as a taxable account, but withdrawals, contribution limits and investment choices still matter. A household-level plan can direct new money or trades in the account where the correction is least disruptive while keeping the combined allocation on target.
How bonds and international stocks fit after an AI selloff
Bonds
Bonds are not a timing bet against AI. They can supply a portion of the portfolio whose behavior is different from concentrated growth equities and can provide a source for future spending or rebalancing purchases. Vanguard’s 2026 outlook argues that diversification and high-quality bonds can help investors remain invested through a drawdown. Treat that statement as scenario context, not a prediction that bonds or stocks will win next.

Choose bond exposure by matching maturity, credit quality and liquidity to your target. A bond allocation can still be volatile, especially when maturities or credit risks are high; “bonds” is not a guarantee of a stable price.

International stocks
Adding or restoring non-U.S. equities spreads exposure across economies, currencies and market leadership. It does not remove risk, and international holdings can lag U.S. technology stocks for long periods. Use the geographic weight in your written plan, and check whether an existing broad fund already supplies the intended international allocation before buying another fund.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.AI-specific context without market timing
Vanguard’s 2026 outlook says AI-related valuations can surpass optimistic earnings forecasts. That observation supports checking concentration and maintaining a diversified plan; it does not establish that a particular stock has reached a top or that an investor should sell immediately. Valuation uncertainty is precisely why a written allocation and a mechanical trigger are more reliable than a headline-driven forecast.
Vanguard also published a U.S. equity outlook of 3.7%–5.7% annualized over the next decade in a 2024 context. That is an old forecast, not a current prediction, and should not be used as a promised return or as a reason to change your allocation today.
A practical rebalance workflow
- Freeze the headline reaction. Do not place an order until you have written the target and the reason it still applies.
- Aggregate every account. Include retirement plans, taxable accounts, employer shares and cash that belongs to the investment plan.
- Calculate current weights. Measure total stocks and bonds, technology exposure, each large company, U.S. and international equities, and market-cap segments.
- Identify the drift. Compare each weight with its target and document which threshold, if any, was breached.
- Choose the destination. Select the underweight asset that restores the intended risk, not simply the asset that recently fell least.
- Test the least disruptive method. Model new contributions first, then partial sales, then a full correction if necessary.
- Estimate taxes and costs. Review lots, gains, losses, applicable wash-sale constraints, spreads, commissions and fund charges.
- Place orders in a controlled sequence. Use the brokerage’s allocation, holdings and tax-lot views; verify account, quantity, order type and destination before submitting.
- Confirm the result. After execution, recalculate the combined allocation and record the date, amounts and rule that triggered the trade.
- Set the next review. Put the calendar date and threshold in your investment policy so the next decision does not depend on emotion.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Selling everything after a sharp decline
This converts a portfolio-allocation problem into a market-timing decision. Correct it by calculating the target gap and selling only the amount required by your rule.
Buying a different concentrated theme
Replacing AI shares with another narrow sector can leave the same concentration risk under a new label. Check company overlap, sector weights and market-cap breadth before buying.

Counting funds instead of holdings
Five funds can still own the same large companies. Use look-through holdings and combine positions across accounts.
Ignoring non-portfolio exposure
Employer stock, technology-sector compensation or a business tied to the industry can make the household riskier than the brokerage allocation suggests. Include those exposures in the decision even if they cannot be traded immediately.
Rebalancing too frequently
Reacting to every daily move can create taxes, spreads and decision fatigue. A documented calendar, threshold or combined rule keeps small fluctuations from becoming repeated trades.
Using a tax-sensitive account without a plan
A sale that looks efficient before taxes may be expensive after realization. Compare lots and account locations first, and obtain professional advice when the tax result is significant or uncertain.
What a disciplined conclusion looks like
After the audit, you should be able to state four facts: your target stock/bond mix, your current technology and single-company weights, the rule that determines whether action is required, and the lowest-cost way to restore the target. If the AI selloff has already brought the portfolio back inside those ranges, no trade may be necessary. If it remains outside them, rebalance in measured steps and document the decision so the next selloff does not rewrite your plan.
