Redirect the money to asset classes, sectors, company sizes and regions that your portfolio lacks. Check taxes, fees and wash-sale rules before trading, and use a written calendar or drift threshold so headlines do not dictate your decisions.
There is no authoritative universal percentage that is “safe” for AI exposure. The right ceiling depends on your time horizon, ability to withstand losses, tax situation and the rest of your holdings. The process below is designed to restore the risk level your overall plan can support, not to predict the next move in AI stocks.

Why an AI-heavy portfolio can be riskier than it looks
Concentration is about total exposure, not the number of tickers
FINRA defines concentration risk as “the risk of amplified losses that may occur from having a large portion of your holdings in a particular investment, asset class or market segment relative to your overall portfolio.” A portfolio can therefore be concentrated even when it contains several funds. Different funds may own many of the same large technology companies, semiconductor manufacturers, cloud providers or data-center beneficiaries.

Count exposure across every account, including workplace plans, individual retirement accounts and taxable accounts. A single AI company is obvious concentration; a technology fund, a semiconductor fund and a broad-market fund that all hold the same companies can create a larger combined position that is easy to miss.

Diversification has two levels
SEC guidance distinguishes diversification between asset categories and diversification within each category. Holding equities, bonds and cash addresses the first level. Holding a wide range of companies, sectors, sizes and countries addresses the second. A mutual fund or ETF is not automatically diversified if it is narrowly focused on one industry sector.
Fast growth can push a sound plan off target
Investor.gov explains that faster-growing holdings can move a portfolio away from its intended allocation and that rebalancing restores the original mix. Rebalancing is therefore a risk-control operation, not a judgment that AI businesses are worthless or that a particular stock must fall.
Step 1: Map your real AI exposure
- List every holding and account. Record the security name, account type, market value, cost basis, unrealized gain or loss, purchase dates and the percentage of the total portfolio.
- Separate direct and indirect exposure. Mark individual AI companies and AI-themed funds as direct or thematic holdings. Then inspect the published top holdings and sector weights of broad-market, technology, semiconductor, cloud and growth funds.
- Use look-through data where available. If a fund reports that a percentage of its assets is in a company or sector, multiply that percentage by your fund position and add it to your direct holding. Do not treat a fund label as a precise risk measure.
- Include economically related suppliers and customers only when evidence supports it. Semiconductor manufacturers, cloud providers, data-center operators and other beneficiaries may add AI sensitivity, but include them when the fund documents or company exposure clearly establish the connection rather than guessing from a marketing label.
- Calculate portfolio percentages. Divide each exposure by the value of all investable assets you are using for the allocation decision. Keep a separate view for emergency cash if it is not part of the long-term portfolio.
| Exposure-map field | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Holding and account | Security, account registration and current value | Tax treatment and liquidity differ between taxable and retirement accounts. |
| AI connection | Direct company, thematic fund or documented look-through percentage | Prevents double-counting and reveals overlap among funds. |
| Cost basis and dates | Lots, unrealized gains or losses and holding periods | Determines the tax cost of reducing an overweight. |
| Asset-class and regional role | Equity, bond, cash, domestic, international, size and style | Shows what can replace the concentration without creating another gap. |
A practical look-through example
Suppose you own an AI-themed fund, a semiconductor fund and a broad U.S. equity fund. The first two may publish concentrated holdings, while the broad fund may list the same companies among its largest positions. Add the documented value of those overlapping positions instead of counting each fund as an independent source of diversification. If a fund does not disclose enough detail to estimate an exposure, label the amount as uncertain and treat that uncertainty as a reason to avoid adding more of the same risk.
Step 2: Set a target allocation before you trade
Start with the goal, date and risk capacity
Write the target mix before looking at recent AI returns. A retirement account needed in three years cannot bear the same equity risk as money intended for a goal 25 years away. Consider the date you need the money, how much loss you could financially absorb, how much volatility you can tolerate without abandoning the plan, income stability, emergency reserves and other assets such as employer stock or property.
Set boundaries, not just a single AI number
Your policy should state targets or ranges for broad asset classes first, then boundaries inside equities. Include technology or AI, other sectors, company size, domestic and non-U.S. stocks, bonds and cash. A broad equity target can still conceal a technology problem if you do not specify how much overlap is acceptable.
No regulator or authoritative source identified a universal safe percentage for AI exposure or a dependable forward return forecast. Treat any numerical ceiling as your own risk-policy choice, not a market rule. A fee-only adviser or tax professional can help translate a goal and tax constraints into ranges when the decision is material.

Write a one-page investment policy
- Purpose of the portfolio and the date or range when money will be needed.
- Target percentages and acceptable ranges for equities, bonds, cash and other permitted assets.
- Maximum intended exposure to a single company, a narrow industry fund and the combined AI-related category.
- How indirect holdings will be counted when funds overlap.
- Rebalancing review dates, drift triggers and who is responsible for placing trades.
- Tax and liquidity constraints, including positions you cannot sell or should not sell without advice.
Step 3: Choose how to reduce the overweight
Investor.gov describes three basic approaches. You can sell from overweight categories and buy underweights, direct new money to underweights, or alter ongoing contributions until the mix returns to target. A combination is often useful when selling appreciated AI positions in a taxable account would create a large bill.

This is the quickest way to restore the target. It is most straightforward in a tax-deferred or tax-free retirement account, subject to that plan’s trading and investment restrictions. In a taxable account, sell deliberately by tax lot and consider whether a staged schedule better fits your tax bracket and cash needs.
Use new contributions
Send salary deferrals, automatic investments, dividends or other fresh money to underweight categories. This avoids realizing gains, but it can take months or years if the concentration is large. Keep the target in view so contributions do not simply add to a different overweight.
Alter ongoing contributions
You can temporarily stop directing new money to AI holdings and increase contributions to bonds, broad equities, international stocks or other approved categories. This is operationally simple when your plan allows percentage changes in payroll or automatic investments.
Blend the methods
A blended plan might use contributions to close part of the gap, sell the highest-cost or most tax-efficient lots, and spread remaining sales over several review dates. Document the order and the conditions that would cause you to pause; otherwise “staging” can become an excuse to postpone risk reduction indefinitely.

| Method | Main advantage | Main limitation | Most useful when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sell and buy | Restores the intended mix promptly | May create capital gains, transaction costs or a tax bill | The drift is large or the account is tax-advantaged |
| Direct new money | Usually avoids selling and realizing gains | May take a long time to correct a large gap | Contributions are substantial relative to the portfolio |
| Change ongoing contributions | Automates gradual movement toward target | Cannot fix a large concentration quickly by itself | A workplace plan or automatic investing service permits percentage changes |
| Blend methods | Balances speed, taxes and trading costs | Requires a written schedule and monitoring | You have both appreciated positions and continuing cash flow |
Step 4: Use a rule instead of AI headlines
Calendar rebalancing
Investor.gov cites a review interval of every six or twelve months. Choose a date, examine the entire portfolio and trade only when the written policy says the drift warrants action. A calendar keeps a rally or sell-off from changing your process.

Threshold rebalancing
Set a tolerance band around each target. Vanguard gives a five-percentage-point drift as an illustrative trigger. For example, if an asset class target is 25%, a review could be triggered when it reaches 30% or 20%. This is an example, not an individualized mandate; a narrow range causes more trading and a wide range allows more risk to accumulate.
Combine the two
Review on a six- or twelve-month calendar and trade sooner only when a holding or category crosses the pre-set band. Vanguard has described rebalancing as sticking to a long-term strategy rather than timing the market. Your written rule should apply whether AI prices are rising, falling or dominating the news.
Step 5: Check taxes, account rules and trading costs
Taxable accounts
Before placing a sell order, identify each lot’s cost basis, holding period and unrealized gain or loss. Realizing gains can affect federal, state and local taxes and may change eligibility for other tax benefits. A loss sale can have wash-sale consequences if you buy the same or a substantially identical security in the relevant period, including through another account. Ask a qualified tax professional about your jurisdiction and circumstances.
Retirement and workplace plans
Tax-deferred and tax-free accounts generally do not impose the same immediate capital-gains reporting as taxable accounts, but plan menus, trading windows, employer-stock restrictions, withdrawal rules and account-specific fees still matter. Do not assume that an employer plan permits every fund or exchange you want.
Fees, spreads and liquidity
Investor.gov notes that rebalancing can trigger transaction fees or tax consequences. Check commissions, fund expenses, redemption fees, bid-ask spreads and the likelihood of receiving a reasonable price in less-liquid securities. A tax saving can be offset by repeated trading costs, while a low-cost security can still be unsuitable if it creates excessive overlap.
Keep an implementation record
- The allocation before trading and the target after trading.
- Each lot sold, its basis, holding period and realized gain or loss.
- Where proceeds and new contributions were directed.
- Fees, spreads and tax estimates used in the decision.
- The next review date and the drift rule that will govern it.

| Portfolio role | Potential diversifier | Risk or limitation to check |
|---|---|---|
| Reduce equity volatility and provide ballast | High-quality bonds with a maturity and credit profile that fit your horizon | Interest-rate risk, credit risk, inflation risk, duration and fund fees |
| Broaden company and sector exposure | A broad-market equity fund with documented breadth | Market losses still occur; inspect top holdings and technology overlap |
| Reduce dependence on one country | Non-U.S. developed and, where appropriate, emerging-market equities | Currency movements, political risk, different accounting standards and higher volatility |
| Reduce mega-cap growth dependence | Smaller-company or value-oriented exposure | Different business risks, cyclicality, liquidity and periods of underperformance |
| Cover near-term spending | Cash or short-term instruments sized to the goal | Inflation can erode purchasing power and yields can change |
Inspect the replacement’s holdings before buying. A fund marketed as broad may still have a large technology weight, and two apparently different funds may duplicate one another. Compare breadth, fees, bid-ask spread, tax efficiency, liquidity and how the holding behaves relative to the rest of your portfolio.
Compare implementation choices
| Choice | How it handles concentration | Trade-offs | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-directed mix of broad funds and bonds | You choose targets, look through holdings and rebalance manually | Maximum control, but you must monitor overlap, taxes and dates | Investors comfortable maintaining a written policy |
| Target-date fund | Automates a diversified allocation and typically changes its mix as the target date approaches | Less control over the exact AI or sector exposure; inspect the fund’s glide path, holdings and fees | Investors who value automatic allocation changes |
| Dedicated bond allocation | Directs a defined share to fixed income rather than additional growth sectors | Can lose value when rates rise and may not keep pace with inflation | Portfolios needing a clearer stabilizing role |
| Registered financial professional | Can integrate goals, taxes, account restrictions and a rebalancing schedule | Advisory fees, potential conflicts and the need to verify registration and services | Large gains, complex accounts, employer stock or uncertainty about risk capacity |
Worked example: a staged correction
The following is an illustration, not a recommended allocation. Assume a $200,000 portfolio has $40,000 in an individual AI company, $30,000 in an AI-themed fund, $80,000 in a broad U.S. equity fund and $50,000 split between international stocks and bonds. The broad fund’s published holdings show $20,000 of additional AI-related exposure. Total documented AI exposure is therefore $90,000, or 45% of the portfolio, rather than just the $70,000 held in the two obvious positions.
The investor’s written policy sets an illustrative 25% AI-related ceiling. If the investor contributes $10,000 before the next review, the desired AI amount in a $210,000 portfolio is $52,500. The investor could sell $37,500 of the direct AI holdings, then direct the $37,500 of proceeds and the $10,000 contribution to the underweight categories—for example, bonds, international equities and a smaller-company or value allocation—while preserving the documented $20,000 of AI exposure inside the broad fund. The exact lots, timing and destinations would depend on taxes, fees, liquidity and the investor’s policy.
If selling $37,500 at once would create an unacceptable tax bill, the same policy could specify a smaller initial sale, direct all new contributions away from AI and schedule additional sales at later reviews. The target and the trigger remain fixed even though implementation is staged.
Common mistakes and how to correct them

Selling everything in one emotional trade
Symptom: A headline prompts an all-at-once exit or a new purchase. Correction: Apply the written target, tax-lot review and threshold rule. Rebalancing is not a forecast.
Ignoring tax lots
Symptom: A sale produces a much larger taxable gain than expected. Correction: Compare lots, holding periods and loss opportunities before submitting the order, and obtain tax advice for a material transaction.
Replacing one concentration with another
Symptom: Proceeds from an AI fund go into a different narrow technology or thematic fund. Correction: Compare sector, company-size and geographic overlap and choose a role-based diversifier.
Setting a rule you will not follow
Symptom: You have a six-month review on paper but repeatedly postpone it during volatile markets. Correction: Put the date on your calendar, define the threshold in advance and document any exception with a specific reason and a new review date.
Protect the portfolio from AI-related fraud
A joint alert from the SEC, NASAA and FINRA published January 25, 2024, warned that AI enthusiasm is being used in scams. Red flags include unregistered platforms, deepfake videos or voices, guaranteed returns and pressure to act immediately. Verify that a person and firm are properly registered, understand where assets will be held, and never transfer money solely because a social-media post or synthetic endorsement promises an AI opportunity.
A maintenance checklist
- Review the complete exposure map every six or twelve months.
- Update fund look-through data when holdings or methodologies change.
- Check whether any category has crossed the written drift band, such as the illustrative five-percentage-point trigger.
- Direct new contributions to the largest underweights before selling appreciated positions.
- Recalculate taxes, fees, spreads and wash-sale risks before each taxable trade.
- Confirm that replacement holdings do not recreate the same AI or technology overlap.
- Revisit the target when your goal date, income, emergency reserves or risk capacity changes—not merely when AI prices move.
The durable solution to an AI-heavy portfolio is a documented allocation and a repeatable rebalancing process. Measure direct and hidden exposure, set boundaries from your own goals, reduce the excess with the least costly combination of contributions and sales, and review on schedule. That approach can lower concentration risk without requiring a prediction about the next AI boom or correction.
