Rebalancing is a risk-control process—not a prediction that technology stocks will fall.
What rebalancing means when big tech dominates
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) defines rebalancing as bringing a portfolio back to its original asset-allocation mix. The objective is to restore the level of stock, bond, cash and other exposure that fits your time horizon and your willingness and ability to take risk. It is not a signal that a particular sector is about to decline.

Strong performance in a few large technology companies can change a portfolio without any new purchase. A holding that was a modest part of the plan can become a large position, and technology exposure can be even larger than it appears when several funds own many of the same companies. The right response is a documented allocation decision, not an automatic sale of every technology share.

The level that is excessive for a retiree drawing income may be acceptable for a young investor with a long horizon and a high risk capacity. Your target must come from your own plan.

Step 1: Reassess the plan before placing a trade
Start by deciding whether the intended allocation is still appropriate. A portfolio can be out of balance for two different reasons: market movements changed the weights, or your circumstances changed the plan itself.
Separate a changed plan from a drifted portfolio
- Changed plan: Your time horizon, financial situation, income needs or willingness and ability to take risk has changed. The asset allocation may need to be redesigned rather than merely restored.
- Drifted portfolio: Your goals and risk capacity are substantially the same, but technology shares rose faster than the other holdings. This is the classic rebalancing case.
Write down the purpose of the money, when you expect to use it and how much loss you could financially and emotionally withstand. The SEC’s asset-allocation guidance ties allocation to time horizon and to both willingness and ability to take risk. If you cannot explain why a target mix fits those factors, pause and address that question before selecting a sale amount.
Account for all relevant accounts
Look across taxable brokerage accounts, individual retirement accounts and other investment accounts where you can obtain reliable balances. A single account can look diversified while the household total is dominated by the same technology companies. Record the account type because selling appreciated shares in a taxable account can create a current tax bill, while a trade inside a retirement account generally has different immediate tax mechanics.
Step 2: Measure your total technology exposure
Make an inventory with three layers: direct holdings, fund holdings and the allocation of the entire portfolio.
List direct positions
For each individual company share, record its current market value and divide that value by the value of all investments being considered. Mark which positions are technology companies or are economically tied to the technology sector. Do not rely only on a brokerage category; use the company’s actual business exposure and the classification used in your investment plan.
Look through every fund
Read the current top-holdings list and sector information for each mutual fund and exchange-traded fund. A broad-sounding fund can still have substantial exposure to the same mega-cap companies held directly elsewhere. A sector fund may be intentionally narrow. Two or more funds can therefore overlap even when their names are different.
Add the technology-company exposure inside each fund to your direct holdings. If a fund publishes a top-10 list but does not disclose a complete look-through calculation in the materials you have, label your estimate as incomplete rather than treating the fund as fully diversified. Recheck the fund’s current disclosure before trading because holdings and weights change.

Compare the result with your intended mix
Place your measured totals beside the target percentages for stocks, bonds, cash and any other categories in your written plan. Keep sector concentration visible inside the stock portion. For example, a portfolio can match its overall stock percentage while still having an unintended concentration in a small group of technology companies.
The SEC uses an illustrative example in which a 60% stock allocation grows to 80% after market performance. Those figures explain how drift occurs; they are not a recommendation for your portfolio. Likewise, there is no SEC-mandated big-tech limit that you can apply universally.
Step 3: Write a rebalancing rule you can follow
A rule reduces the chance that recent excitement or fear will determine every decision. Put the target allocation, the measurement date and the action trigger in writing.
Calendar review
Review on a regular schedule. SEC materials mention six- or twelve-month intervals as examples some experts use and also say rebalancing generally works best relatively infrequently. Those intervals are examples, not a required timetable. A calendar review can be practical when contributions, withdrawals and account statements arrive on a predictable cycle.
Percentage-band review
Set a permitted range around each target and act when a holding or category moves outside it. The band is a personal design choice: it should be wide enough to avoid constant trading and narrow enough to keep risk from drifting materially. Document whether the band applies to an individual security, a sector, an asset class or the whole household portfolio.
Combine the approaches
You can review twice a year but trade only when a chosen band is breached. Whatever method you use, record the date, the measured weights, the decision and the next review trigger. A written process also makes it easier for a spouse or successor to understand why a trade was made.
Step 4: Choose how to move back toward the target
There is no evidence that one implementation method produces superior returns. Compare the choices by speed, taxes, costs and whether they fit your account and contribution pattern.

| Method | How quickly concentration falls | Tax and holding-period considerations | Costs and practical fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sell part of overweight positions and buy underweights | Usually the fastest because the existing imbalance is addressed immediately. | In a taxable account, selling can realize gains or losses. Review basis and whether each lot is short- or long-term before submitting the order. | May create commissions, bid-ask spreads or other transaction costs. Works even when you are not adding new money. |
| Use new money to buy underweight categories | Gradual; the pace depends on contribution size relative to the portfolio. | Can avoid an immediate sale and therefore avoid realizing a gain at that moment, but the old concentration remains while contributions catch up. | Useful for regular savers. It may be too slow if the current exposure is inconsistent with your risk capacity. |
| Redirect recurring contributions | Gradual and predictable; each deposit is sent to underweights until the mix is closer to target. | Usually does not require selling appreciated shares, so no sale-related gain is created by the contribution itself. | Simple to automate where the plan permits it. Less useful when contributions are small or irregular. |
| Combine a partial sale with new contributions | Can reduce the largest excess now while allowing future deposits to complete the adjustment. | Realizes gains only on the portion sold; future contributions can reduce the need for additional sales. | Requires coordination across account types and careful recordkeeping, but can balance speed and tax impact. |
Sell and reinvest
Use this path when the concentration is large enough that waiting would leave the portfolio outside your risk plan. Decide which positions or lots to sell, place orders appropriate to the security’s trading conditions and direct proceeds to the underweight categories in the same written plan. Check transaction costs and tax consequences before acting, as the SEC specifically advises.
Recommended Free Tools
Use new money first
Direct new deposits, dividends or other available cash to the underweight categories. This avoids an immediate sale, but it does not remove the existing concentration. Estimate how long contributions would take to bring the portfolio into range; if the period is too long for your risk tolerance, consider a partial sale instead.
Redirect recurring contributions
Change the investment election for future deposits in a workplace plan or automatic brokerage contribution. Confirm that the new election actually applies to future money and does not sell existing holdings. Continue measuring the entire portfolio, including old positions, so a contribution change is not mistaken for a completed rebalance.
Step 5: Handle taxable-account mechanics before selling
For every taxable position under consideration, inspect the purchase date, adjusted cost basis, number of shares and unrealized gain or loss. Broker records are useful, but verify that they include reinvested dividends, corporate actions and transfers that can affect basis.
Understand the holding-period distinction
IRS Topic 409 states: “If you hold the asset for more than one year before you dispose of it, your capital gain or loss is long-term.” Assets held for one year or less are generally short-term. Short-term gains are generally taxed at ordinary graduated rates, while a lower rate may apply to net capital gains. The actual result depends on your complete tax situation and the rules for the relevant tax year, so recheck current IRS guidance or consult a qualified tax professional.
Choose lots deliberately when available
Many brokers allow a specific-share or specific-lot instruction. Identify the exact shares you want to sell and confirm that the broker recorded the instruction before the trade executes. IRS guidance generally ties basis to specifically identified shares when the identification is properly made with the broker. If shares cannot be identified, IRS material describes default basis treatment for relevant circumstances, which may produce a different gain or loss than you expected.
Do not assume that selecting a particular lot will minimize tax without reviewing all lots, other gains and losses, your filing situation and the current rules. Save confirmations and statements showing the instruction and the resulting basis. Accurate records matter if the broker’s year-end report needs correction.

Stage sales when that fits the plan
If an immediate full sale would realize more gains than you want to recognize in one tax year, a partial sale can reduce concentration while leaving room for later adjustments. Staging should be driven by the target allocation and your tax circumstances, not by an attempt to predict the next technology-stock move. A slower schedule is not appropriate if the present concentration creates more risk than you can accept.
Step 6: Consider appreciated-share donations only when you already intend to give
An investor who plans to make a charitable gift may ask whether appreciated shares could be transferred instead of sold. IRS Publication 526 explains that capital-gain property generally includes capital assets held for more than one year and describes deduction limits and exceptions. Eligibility, the type of recipient, how the property is used, the holding period and the donor’s facts all matter.
A donation is not automatically tax efficient, and it is not a substitute for an allocation decision. Confirm that the recipient can accept securities, obtain the required acknowledgment and discuss the transfer with a tax professional before relying on a deduction. Give only assets and amounts consistent with the charitable plan; do not donate solely to avoid deciding how to rebalance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step 7: Execute the rebalance across accounts
Use a written trade plan so that each transaction has a purpose and the combined result can be checked.
- Freeze the baseline: Download or save current statements and record balances, target weights, direct technology holdings and fund overlap.
- Mark account constraints: Identify which positions are taxable, which are in retirement accounts and which accounts have contribution or investment-menu limits.
- Calculate the dollar adjustment: For each overweight category, compare its current value with the value implied by the target allocation. Do not round away small differences that could matter in a concentrated position.
- Select the implementation mix: Decide what will be sold now, what will be funded with new money and what recurring contributions will buy.
- Review costs and taxes: Check commissions, spreads, fund trading costs, possible redemption fees and the estimated tax character of each taxable sale.
- Enter and verify orders: Confirm ticker or fund identifiers, share quantities, lot instructions and order status. Keep trade confirmations.
- Place proceeds and contributions: Buy the underweight categories according to the written plan rather than allowing cash to remain accidentally concentrated in the former overweight.
- Recalculate the household view: Include every account and the updated fund holdings you can verify. Record the next review date or band trigger.
Provider-sponsored portfolio-analysis tools can help reveal overlap, but a provider may favor products or services it sells. Treat any suggested allocation as an input to your own plan, not as an independent recommendation.
Step 8: Recheck concentration and maintain the rule
After trades settle, repeat the look-through review. Confirm that direct holdings, fund top holdings and the total stock-sector mix now align with the target. Check that a fund purchase did not recreate the same exposure you just reduced in an individual account.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Counting funds instead of underlying holdings
Owning several funds is not proof of diversification. Obtain the top holdings and identify overlap. If the same large technology companies appear across funds and direct positions, measure the combined exposure before deciding how many funds to sell.

Using a universal concentration number
There is no established threshold that applies to every investor. Replace an internet rule of thumb with a target tied to goals, time horizon and risk capacity.
Ignoring the tax lot
Selling without checking purchase dates and adjusted basis can turn an otherwise suitable rebalance into an unexpected taxable event. Pause, review lots and confirm the broker’s identification method before submitting the order.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Changing future contributions but never checking the old holdings
Redirected contributions reduce drift only over time. Measure the total portfolio and set a date for checking whether the pace is sufficient.
Trading too often
Frequent adjustments can add costs and make the process depend on short-term emotion. Use the written schedule or band and make exceptions only when your goals, risk capacity or account circumstances genuinely change.
Assuming a charity transfer solves every problem
Donation rules have eligibility, documentation and deduction limits. Use a transfer only when it fits an existing charitable intention and your tax professional confirms the details.
A worked allocation example without a recommended target
Imagine an investor whose written plan calls for a particular mix of stocks and other assets. After a strong run by large technology companies, the stock portion rises from 60% to 80%, mirroring the SEC’s illustrative drift example. The investor first determines whether the 60% target still fits current goals. If it does, the investor measures how much of the 80% is technology exposure, including overlapping fund holdings.
The investor can then choose among a partial sale, directing new deposits to underweights, redirecting recurring contributions or combining those methods. In a taxable account, the investor compares lots held one year or less with lots held more than one year, checks basis and records the chosen-share instruction. The example demonstrates the process only; neither 60% nor 80% is a suitable allocation for every reader.
Rebalancing checklist
- Confirm whether goals, time horizon, financial situation or risk tolerance changed.
- List direct technology holdings across relevant accounts.
- Review the largest holdings and sector exposure of every fund.
- Calculate combined exposure and compare it with the written target mix.
- Choose a calendar review, a percentage band or both.
- Compare selling, new-money and contribution-redirection methods.
- For taxable sales, check dates, adjusted basis, unrealized gains and losses, and lot-identification procedures.
- Estimate transaction costs and possible tax consequences before trading.
- Consider appreciated-share donations only if they fit an intended charitable gift and applicable IRS rules.
- After trades settle, verify the new allocation, fund overlap and the next review trigger.
General SEC and IRS materials provide education, not a personal recommendation. Recheck tax-year rules and obtain individualized financial or tax advice when the amounts, gains or account circumstances make the decision material.
