Use your written target allocation—not the headlines—to decide what to do after stocks and cryptocurrencies decline at the same time. First confirm that your goals, time horizon, emergency reserves, income needs and risk tolerance still support the target. Then calculate the current percentage in each sleeve across every account and crypto custody location. If the mix has drifted, move it back toward target using contributions and other cash flows first, and sell only as much as necessary after considering taxes and trading costs.
A simultaneous drawdown is not, by itself, proof that your investment plan has failed. It is a test of whether the allocation you chose in calmer conditions is still one you can hold. Rebalancing is a risk-control process, not a promise of profit or a way to predict the next market move.

What rebalancing means after a joint stock-and-crypto decline
The SEC’s Investor.gov defines rebalancing as “bringing your portfolio back to your original asset allocation mix.” Your mix might contain broad stock funds, bonds or cash, and a separately identified cryptocurrency sleeve. A fall in both stocks and crypto can leave the percentages either close to target or materially different, depending on which sleeve fell more and how large it was to begin with.

It does not answer whether prices will rise tomorrow, whether a particular token will recover, or whether you should abandon investing. Those are market-timing questions, and trying to answer them during a sell-off often leads to rash all-in or all-out decisions. Investor.gov’s volatility guidance favors deliberate, smaller adjustments when circumstances warrant.

Do not assume that two assets moving down together make diversification useless. Diversification is intended to spread exposure among categories whose returns may differ over a full period; it cannot guarantee that every category will rise or that losses will be avoided in a broad risk-off episode. A narrowly focused exchange-traded fund is not automatically diversified, and a portfolio with several crypto tokens may still have concentrated exposure to the same risks.
Step 1: Reconfirm the target before placing an order
Your target is a personal decision tied to the purpose of the money. Write it down before looking at individual prices. A useful policy identifies the percentage for each major sleeve and the permitted range around it.
Review the circumstances that determine the mix
- Goals: Identify what the money is for and the date or range when withdrawals begin.
- Time horizon: A long horizon can support more volatility than a near-term spending need, but it does not make a loss affordable if you need the cash soon.
- Income and liquidity: Check whether employment income, pensions or other resources cover expected spending. Keep an emergency reserve appropriate to your situation rather than relying on volatile assets for near-term bills.
- Risk tolerance and capacity: Ask whether you could continue the plan after another substantial decline. Capacity is the financial ability to absorb a loss; tolerance is your willingness to do so. Both matter.
- Account structure: Note which holdings are in taxable accounts, retirement plans and other wrappers, because the cheapest trade in one account may be costly or unavailable in another.
If these facts have changed, revise the target first. A market drop is not a reason to preserve an allocation that no longer fits your life. Conversely, if the target still fits, changing it solely because recent performance was frightening or disappointing turns a long-term policy into a series of emotional forecasts.
Give crypto its own line
Record cryptocurrency separately instead of hiding it inside “alternatives” or treating it as a stock substitute. This makes its size, volatility and custody arrangements visible. Investor.gov notes that crypto assets do not have the same regulatory oversight as stocks, bonds, funds and 401(k) plans, and advises diversification and avoiding losses you cannot afford. Those warnings belong in the policy statement you use to set the crypto limit.
Step 2: Measure the actual drift
Use current market values, not the amount originally invested. Include every relevant account and every place crypto is held so that an allocation decision is based on the household portfolio rather than one brokerage screen.
Calculate each sleeve’s current weight
For each category, divide its current value by total investable assets and multiply by 100:
current weight = sleeve value ÷ total investable assets × 100

Total investable assets should include the stocks, bonds, cash allocated to the portfolio and crypto positions covered by your policy. Decide explicitly whether an emergency fund or money reserved for a known bill is outside that pool; do not let a hidden cash balance distort the comparison.
Translate percentages into dollars
For a target percentage, calculate the target dollar value and compare it with the current value:
target value = total investable assets × target percentage
trade needed = target value − current value
A positive result means the sleeve is underweight and would need a purchase or contribution; a negative result means it is overweight and would need a sale, withdrawal or redirection of cash. Record the result for each sleeve and check that the proposed trades net to approximately zero before taxes and fees.
Illustrative calculation
Suppose a household’s policy is 60% stocks, 30% bonds and cash, and 10% crypto. After a joint decline, the portfolio is worth $100,000: $51,000 in stocks, $39,000 in bonds and cash, and $10,000 in crypto. The current weights are 51%, 39% and 10%. The crypto sleeve is on target; stocks are 9 percentage points below target and bonds/cash are 9 points above. Restoring the mix would mean directing $9,000 from the overweight defensive sleeve toward stocks, subject to account access, taxes and the household’s willingness to hold the target after another decline.
The numbers are illustrative, not a universal allocation or a recommendation to buy a falling asset. The calculation shows why percentage drift—not the size of a headline loss—determines whether a rebalance is called for.
Step 3: Choose a rule you can follow
Investor.gov says rebalancing generally works best relatively infrequently. A written rule prevents constant trading while still giving you a trigger for meaningful drift.

| Rule | How it works | Main advantage | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calendar | Review on a fixed schedule, such as semiannually or annually. | Simple and low monitoring burden. | Weights can drift substantially between reviews. |
| Threshold | Act when a sleeve moves beyond a preset band. Vanguard illustrates a 5-percentage-point trigger. | Tighter control of allocation drift. | Requires current values and more monitoring; a 5-point trigger is an example, not a universal recommendation. |
| Combined | Review on a calendar and also act when a threshold is breached. | Balances routine simplicity with protection against large drift. | More record-keeping and possible trades than a calendar-only rule. |
Set the band in percentage points, document whether it applies to each sleeve or to the whole portfolio, and state whether a trade returns the sleeve to its exact target or merely inside the band. The rule should be broad enough to avoid reacting to every small price change and strict enough to prevent an unintended risk profile.

Step 4: Use cash flows before selling when practical
New money can correct drift without realizing a gain. Direct payroll contributions, retirement-plan deposits, dividends and interest toward underweight sleeves. If you are withdrawing, begin with an overweight sleeve when that fits the account rules and your spending plan.
Why cash-flow rebalancing can be cheaper
- It may avoid realizing taxable gains in a taxable account.
- It can reduce commissions, spreads and other transaction costs.
- It keeps the target policy visible while you continue investing rather than waiting for a perfect entry price.
Cash flows are not always enough. A large drift, a small contribution rate or a portfolio with little incoming income may require a deliberate sale and purchase. Do not force an oversized contribution into an unsuitable sleeve merely to avoid a tax review.
Step 5: Trade deliberately when cash flows cannot restore the mix
- Confirm values and prices. Refresh every account and crypto wallet or platform, and note the valuation time because prices can move rapidly.
- Identify the smallest necessary trades. Sell only enough of the overweight sleeve to move the portfolio to the target or back inside your chosen band. Buy the underweight sleeve with the proceeds or available cash.
- Check account constraints. Retirement plans may limit available funds or exchange options; taxable accounts may have settlement, wash-sale or other local rules. Crypto platforms may have withdrawal, network or custody limitations.
- Review costs before submitting. Compare fund expenses, bid-ask spreads, commissions, withdrawal charges and any account-specific fee. A trade that appears small in percentage terms can be material in dollars.
- Place and document the orders. Record the asset, amount, execution date, price, fee, account and resulting weight. Keep confirmations and tax-lot information.
- Recalculate after settlement. Verify that the final holdings, cash balance and crypto custody records match the policy. Schedule the next review rather than leaving the portfolio in a perpetual “temporary” state.
Taxable-account checks
Before selling, review each lot’s cost basis, holding period and expected realized gain or loss. A sale can create a tax bill even when the overall portfolio is below its previous high. Tax treatment varies by jurisdiction and account type; local rules may distinguish short- and long-term gains, losses, and digital assets. When gains are large, records are incomplete or the account structure is complicated, obtain advice from a qualified tax or investment professional before trading.
Prefer location-aware rebalancing
If the same target sleeve exists in several accounts, compare the tax and transaction consequences of trading each location. A retirement account may allow an exchange without a current taxable sale, while a taxable account may not. Do not let an account-level percentage obscure the household-level target, and do not move assets between accounts without checking transfer rules and custody risks.
Step 6: Keep the crypto sleeve within a precommitted limit
A sharp crypto decline can create an apparent bargain narrative, but a lower price does not lower custody, regulatory or loss-capacity risk. Investor.gov specifically warns that crypto assets lack the same regulatory oversight as traditional securities and retirement plans and advises diversification and avoiding losses you cannot afford.

When crypto is underweight
If crypto falls more than the rest of the portfolio and breaches your written lower band, the mechanical policy may call for a purchase. First confirm that the original crypto limit still fits your financial situation and that you can tolerate another severe decline. If it does not, revise the target rather than buying simply to reach an outdated percentage.
When crypto is overweight
If a stock-and-crypto decline leaves crypto overweight because stocks fell further, do not add crypto merely because its price is down. Direct new money elsewhere or reduce the sleeve to the permitted range, taking taxes, fees, custody and local rules into account.

- Keep an inventory of every wallet, exchange account and backup method.
- Verify that you can access the assets before counting them in the allocation.
- Record transaction history and cost basis in a durable format.
- Do not assume that a platform’s protections match those of a brokerage account or bank deposit.
Three practical choices after the fall
| Choice | Appropriate when | What to do | Risk to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hold and wait for the next scheduled review | Weights remain inside the band and your circumstances are unchanged. | Make no forced trade; continue the written contribution plan. | Drift may grow if prices move further before the review. |
| Cash-flow rebalance | An underweight sleeve can be restored with upcoming deposits, dividends or interest. | Redirect flows until the portfolio returns to the target or band. | It may take time, and the market can move while you wait. |
| Sell and buy now | A threshold is breached, the drift is material, and the target still fits. | Trade only the amount needed after tax and cost checks. | Realized gains, fees and the possibility of further declines. |
These choices are methods, not predictions. None guarantees a profit or prevents additional losses.
When not to rebalance immediately
Pause and reassess rather than trading on autopilot when any of the following is true:
- Your emergency reserve is inadequate or a major expense is imminent.
- You may need the money before the planned horizon.
- Your job, health or income situation has changed materially.
- You cannot explain the tax result or verify the cost basis.
- The target contains a crypto percentage you no longer consider tolerable.
- The proposed trade would use borrowed money or leave essential bills dependent on a volatile asset.
In these cases, the first action may be to update the policy, raise liquidity or obtain professional advice. A delayed trade is preferable to an unexamined change in risk.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Selling everything after the headlines turn negative
Problem: An all-out decision can lock in losses and leave the portfolio disconnected from the written goal.

Correction: Calculate the drift and apply the chosen calendar or threshold rule. If the target no longer fits, change it deliberately and document why.

Doubling crypto because it fell
Problem: A lower price is not evidence that the asset is safe, fairly valued or suitable for a larger allocation.
Correction: Keep crypto at a precommitted level that reflects its volatility, custody and regulatory risks and the loss you can afford.
Counting only one account
Problem: A workplace plan, brokerage, bank cash balance or wallet can make the household allocation look very different from the account being viewed.
Correction: Maintain one consolidated worksheet with current values, targets and locations.
Trading to exact percentages after every move
Problem: Constant adjustments increase monitoring, spreads and possible taxes without changing the long-term objective.
Correction: Use a reasonable band and review relatively infrequently, as Investor.gov suggests.
Ignoring a narrowly focused fund
Problem: A fund wrapper does not guarantee diversification if it concentrates in one sector, theme or region.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCorrection: Look through each holding to understand the underlying exposure before assigning it to a diversified sleeve.
A repeatable rebalancing worksheet
Keep one page or spreadsheet with these fields:
- Goal and expected withdrawal date.
- Target percentage for stocks, bonds/cash and the separately listed crypto sleeve.
- Lower and upper bands, including the chosen trigger.
- Current value and percentage for every sleeve across all accounts and custody locations.
- Dollar amount needed to reach the target or return inside the band.
- Available contributions, dividends, interest and planned withdrawals.
- Tax lots, holding periods, estimated gains or losses and transaction costs for any proposed sale.
- Orders completed, execution dates and resulting weights.
- Next calendar review date and the events that would trigger an earlier review.
Update the worksheet after trades settle and whenever your goals, income, reserves or risk tolerance change. The purpose is to make the next downturn a documented procedure rather than an improvised reaction.
Bottom line for a simultaneous stock-and-crypto decline
Do not sell stocks or crypto merely because both fell, and do not buy more crypto merely because it is cheaper. Reconfirm the target, measure the whole portfolio, apply a written band or schedule, use cash flows first, and trade only the amount needed after taxes, fees and custody risks are understood. If the target itself no longer matches your life or your ability to absorb losses, revise the policy before rebalancing.
