A strong stock-market run can leave stocks taking up a larger share of your portfolio than your plan allows. Rebalancing means bringing the mix back toward the target allocation that still fits your goal, time horizon and risk tolerance—not raising your stock target simply because stocks recently performed well.
Start by checking whether your target is still appropriate. Then measure the portfolio’s current percentages, choose whether to redirect new contributions, trade existing holdings, or combine both approaches, and set a calendar or drift-threshold rule you can follow consistently. Before selling, review transaction charges and the possible tax treatment in that account.

What rebalancing does after a market surge
Your asset allocation is the percentage of the portfolio assigned to broad categories such as stocks, bonds and cash. A target allocation is the mix you selected for a particular objective and risk level. Rebalancing restores the portfolio toward that target after market movements or contributions have changed the percentages.
Suppose an investor began with a target of 60% stocks and 40% bonds. If stocks rise substantially while bonds do not, stocks could become 80% of the account without any trade. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) uses a 60%-to-80% stock example in its Investor.gov guide; those figures illustrate how drift works and are not a recommended allocation.

Rebalancing is different from performance chasing. The SEC guide states: “But savvy investors typically do not change their asset allocation based on the relative performance of asset categories – for example, increasing the proportion of stocks in one’s portfolio when the stock market is hot. Instead, that’s when they ‘rebalance’ their portfolios.” A recent gain is therefore a reason to check the plan, not proof that your long-term stock percentage should be higher.
Step 1: Confirm that the target allocation still fits
Do not trade until you have checked the plan behind the percentages. A target that was sensible years ago may no longer match your circumstances. The SEC identifies changes in your time horizon, risk tolerance, financial situation or goal as reasons to reconsider an allocation.
Review the goal and time horizon
Identify what the money is for and when you expect to use it. A long-term retirement account and a fund needed for a near-term purchase can have different appropriate mixes. As the date for a goal gets closer, the amount of volatility you can reasonably tolerate may change.

Reassess risk tolerance and capacity
Risk tolerance is your willingness to endure losses; risk capacity is how much loss your finances can withstand without jeopardizing the goal. A market rally can make a high-stock allocation feel comfortable, but the relevant test is how you would react and cope during a substantial decline. If your income, emergency reserves, debt, dependents or other resources have changed, the original target may need a separate planning decision.
Separate a target change from a rebalance
Changing the target because your life or objective changed is an allocation decision. Returning to an unchanged target after stocks drifted is rebalancing. Document which decision you are making so a market move does not quietly turn into an unplanned increase in risk.
Step 2: Measure the portfolio’s current drift
Write down the current value of each holding and group holdings by the asset categories used in your plan. For each category, calculate:
Current percentage = category value ÷ total portfolio value × 100.

Include every account consistently
If your strategy is intended to cover several accounts, gather the balances before calculating the overall percentages. Include taxable and tax-advantaged accounts only when you intend to manage them as one combined portfolio. The SEC guidance is general and does not prescribe one universal method for combining accounts, choosing which account should hold an asset category, or handling employer-plan restrictions. Use a consistent definition of “portfolio” and record which accounts are included.

Look through the holdings, not only the account labels
Classify investments by their actual exposure. A stock fund, individual stock and an international-stock fund may all belong to the stock portion of the plan. A bond fund and a cash-like holding may belong to different categories depending on your written allocation. Check each fund’s current strategy and prospectus rather than assuming its name tells you the full exposure. Avoid double-counting a holding that appears in more than one account.
Record the result before deciding
Create a simple worksheet with the category, target percentage, current value, current percentage and percentage-point drift. This makes the decision auditable and prevents a strong recent return from becoming the only information you use.

There are three practical approaches. Your choice depends on available contributions, account rules, costs and the size of the drift.
Use new contributions
Direct incoming money toward categories below target instead of adding to the category that has become overweight. This can move the portfolio closer to its target without selling an existing position. It is often easiest when you contribute regularly through payroll deductions or an automatic transfer.
New money may not eliminate a large drift quickly. Continue measuring the percentages rather than assuming that several contributions have restored the balance.
Sell overweight holdings and buy underweight holdings
Sell enough from categories above target and use the proceeds to buy categories below target. This can restore the intended mix more directly, but a sale may create transaction charges or tax consequences. Confirm trade minimums, bid-ask spreads, settlement rules and any restrictions in the account before submitting orders.
Combine contributions with selective trades
Use new contributions first, then decide whether the remaining drift is large enough to justify trades. This combines the SEC’s listed methods; it is a practical way to reduce the amount that must be sold, not a universally superior strategy. Record the reason for any trade and the allocation it is intended to restore.
| Method | What you do | Potential advantage | Points to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Redirect contributions | Send new money to underweight categories. | Can reduce drift without selling existing holdings. | May take time to correct a large gap; verify payroll or account instructions. |
| Sell and buy | Sell overweight categories and purchase underweight categories. | Can move the portfolio toward target immediately. | Review transaction fees, tax treatment, settlement and trading restrictions. |
| Combine both | Use contributions first and trade only the remaining gap. | May limit the amount sold while addressing material drift. | Define in advance when the residual gap warrants a trade. |
These options are not rankings. The SEC explains the methods and warns that the consequences depend on the investor’s account and circumstances.
Step 4: Set a rule for when to rebalance
Choose the review rule before the next market move so the decision is not driven by headlines. Investor.gov describes two broad approaches and notes that rebalancing generally works best when done relatively infrequently.

Calendar-based reviews
Review on a recurring schedule, such as every six or twelve months. A calendar rule is easy to remember and gives you a defined date to update the worksheet. The interval examples come from Investor.gov; the SEC does not establish one universally best interval.
Threshold-based reviews
Review when a category moves beyond a percentage-point or relative threshold chosen in advance. For example, you might inspect the portfolio after a category moves materially away from its target, then decide whether a trade is warranted. The threshold must be selected for your plan; the SEC does not prescribe a universal percentage.
How to choose between them
| Rule | Strength | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Calendar | Simple, predictable and easy to automate as a reminder. | It may review a portfolio that has barely drifted, or miss a large move between review dates. |
| Threshold | Ties action to the size of allocation drift. | Requires monitoring and a clearly defined threshold; frequent checking can encourage unnecessary trading. |
| Calendar plus threshold | Provides a scheduled review while allowing an earlier check after an unusually large move. | Needs written rules so market news does not trigger discretionary changes. |
Whichever rule you use, apply it to the target allocation rather than to a prediction about where stocks or bonds will go next.
Before selling: check costs, taxes and account mechanics
The SEC’s Investor.gov guide says: “Before you rebalance your portfolio, you should consider whether the method of rebalancing you decide to use will trigger transaction fees or tax consequences.” That warning is especially important when the portfolio is held in a taxable account.
Transaction costs
Check commissions, fund trading fees, bid-ask spreads, account charges, redemption fees and any plan-specific costs. A “commission-free” order can still have other expenses. Read the account’s current fee schedule and the investment’s documents before trading.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTax consequences
Selling can have tax consequences that depend on the account type, holding period, purchase records, gains or losses and the tax rules that apply to you. The available SEC material does not establish current tax rates, account-specific treatment or a universally best order of trades. A tax adviser can help evaluate the consequences for your situation; a financial professional may help identify ways to minimize costs. Do not treat the historical tax discussion in the SEC’s 2012 year-end bulletin as current tax advice.
Account and plan restrictions
Check whether your workplace plan, individual account or fund imposes trading windows, exchange limits, minimums, settlement requirements or restrictions on particular holdings. Make sure automatic contributions will not undo the allocation you just restored.
Keep records
Save the allocation worksheet, trade confirmations, contribution changes and the rule you adopted. In a taxable account, retain basis and holding-period information. Good records make the next review faster and help you explain why a transaction occurred.
A practical rebalancing workflow
- Write down the target. List the percentage for each asset category and the goal, time horizon and risk assumptions behind it.
- List the holdings and balances. Include the accounts that your plan treats as one portfolio and classify each holding by exposure.
- Calculate current percentages. Divide each category’s value by the combined portfolio value and multiply by 100.
- Mark overweight and underweight categories. Record the percentage-point difference from target.
- Check whether the target changed. Consider changes in goal, time horizon, risk tolerance or financial circumstances before calling the difference “drift.”
- Review costs and taxes. Determine whether contributions can correct the gap and what selling would mean in each account.
- Select the method. Redirect contributions, trade, or combine the two. Use only the amount needed to move toward the written target.
- Place and verify transactions. Confirm the destination category, order details, settlement and updated automatic-contribution instructions.
- Set the next review rule. Put the calendar date or threshold in your records and follow it consistently.
Worked example: correcting drift without changing the target
Assume a hypothetical portfolio has a written target of 60% stocks and 40% bonds. After a strong stock-market period, its current value is 80% stocks and 20% bonds, matching the SEC’s illustrative percentages. The example does not establish that 60/40 is suitable for any investor.

The investor first confirms that the goal, time horizon, risk tolerance and financial situation still support the original target. If they do, the 20-percentage-point stock overweight is drift. The investor could direct all new contributions to bonds, sell enough stock exposure to buy bonds, or use contributions first and then trade the remaining difference. Before selling, they check the account’s fees and the tax implications. They then document a calendar or threshold review rule rather than changing the stock target because stocks rose.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When a target-date fund may fit a hands-off approach
A target-date fund is designed for an investor who wants the fund manager to handle allocation, diversification and rebalancing within the fund. Investor.gov says these funds are typically designed to become more conservative as the target date approaches.
That description applies to the category, not to every fund. Review the individual fund’s glide-path strategy, underlying holdings, target date, fees and whether it is intended to be the sole investment or one part of a broader portfolio. If you hold other accounts outside the fund, those accounts may still change the overall allocation.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Increasing the stock target after gains
Problem: A recent run is treated as evidence that stocks should permanently occupy a larger share.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Correction: Return to the goal, time horizon and risk analysis. Raise the target only after a deliberate allocation decision based on changed circumstances, not on performance alone.
Trading every time the market moves
Problem: Constant monitoring creates frequent transactions and turns rebalancing into market timing.
Correction: Use a written calendar or threshold rule and follow the SEC’s guidance that rebalancing generally works best when relatively infrequent.
Ignoring new contributions
Problem: The portfolio is rebalanced once, but automatic deposits continue buying the overweight category.
Correction: Check contribution instructions as part of every review and redirect new money when appropriate.

Looking at one account in isolation
Problem: An account appears balanced while the combined portfolio has a large concentration elsewhere.
Correction: Decide which accounts belong in the plan, calculate the combined percentages consistently and document the scope.
Assuming a sale is cost-free
Problem: The investor focuses on the target percentages and overlooks fees, spreads or taxes.
Correction: Check the account’s current charges and tax implications before placing an order. Seek individualized professional advice when the consequences are material or unclear.
Using a generic allocation as a personal prescription
Problem: An illustrative mix, such as the SEC’s 60%-to-80% example, is copied as a recommendation.
Correction: Treat examples as demonstrations of drift only. Your target must come from your own objective, horizon, risk profile and circumstances.
What this guidance can and cannot decide
The SEC and Investor.gov materials explain what rebalancing is, list contribution and trading methods, describe calendar and threshold reviews, and emphasize checking transaction fees and tax consequences. They do not determine your suitable allocation, a particular drift threshold, a best review cadence, which securities to trade, the current tax treatment of your account or the correct action for an individual investor.
