Rebalance only when your written investment plan says to. A market sell-off can push stocks below their target weight, but the correct response is not a prediction about tomorrow’s prices. Compare your current holdings with the allocation set for your goal, time horizon and risk tolerance. If a preset tolerance band or review date has been reached, restore the mix gradually and tax-consciously.
Before selling anything, direct new contributions, dividends and interest to the underweight asset class where practical. In taxable accounts, review cost basis, realized gains or losses, trading costs and wash-sale exposure across all of your accounts. In tax-advantaged accounts, trades generally do not create current capital-gains tax, although withdrawal and distribution rules still apply.

What rebalancing means after a sell-off
Rebalancing is the process of bringing a portfolio back to its chosen asset-allocation mix. The mix might include stocks, bonds and cash, with additional targets for domestic and international holdings or other asset categories. The purpose is to restore the amount of risk you deliberately accepted, not to call the market’s next move.
Investor.gov describes rebalancing as returning a portfolio to its original allocation and cautions investors not to change the mix simply because one asset class recently outperformed. A sharp decline in stocks may leave a previously balanced portfolio with a smaller stock percentage and a larger bond or cash percentage. That can make the portfolio less risky than intended. A rebound can create the opposite problem.

The first question is therefore not “Did the market crash?” It is “Has my portfolio moved outside the rule I chose for this goal?” If your objective, time horizon, emergency-cash requirement or ability and willingness to tolerate losses has changed, reassess the target itself before trading. If those circumstances have not changed, follow the existing target and trigger rather than inventing a new allocation in response to a frightening headline.
Decide whether the target still fits
Risk tolerance has two parts: your willingness to endure losses and your financial ability to do so. Time horizon matters just as much. Money needed soon generally cannot absorb the same stock-market volatility as money earmarked for a distant retirement date.
Review the circumstances that can justify a new target
- Goal date: A home purchase, tuition payment or retirement date that is closer than planned may require less exposure to volatile assets.
- Cash needs: A larger emergency reserve or an upcoming liability can change how much can remain invested.
- Income and job security: A change in employment or business income can reduce your capacity to tolerate a drawdown.
- Risk behavior: If you sold in panic or could not sleep during the decline, your previous allocation may have exceeded your willingness to take risk. Do not respond by making an abrupt trade; write a revised policy and apply it consistently.
- Account purpose: A taxable brokerage account, retirement account and short-term savings account may each need a different risk mix.
If none of these conditions changed, a sell-off alone is not a reason to lower the stock target. Lowering the target after prices fall can lock in losses and leave the portfolio underexposed if markets recover.

Write the rule before you trade
A written policy prevents a single trading session from becoming an unplanned strategy. Record the target percentages, the accounts included, the review schedule, the drift threshold and the circumstances that would make you revise the target.
Calendar reviews
With a calendar method, you inspect the allocation on a set schedule, such as annually, and trade only if the mix needs adjustment. Vanguard says annual rebalancing is often optimal in its research. A calendar is simple and can reduce the temptation to react to every market move, but a large drift can persist between reviews.
Tolerance bands
With a threshold method, you trade when an asset class moves a specified number of percentage points away from its target. Vanguard illustrates a 70% stocks/30% bonds portfolio with a five-percentage-point trigger: review and rebalance when stocks fall below 65% or rise above 75%, or when the corresponding bond weight crosses its limit. Bands respond to meaningful drift rather than to every small fluctuation, but they require you to monitor the account.

Calendar plus bands
Many investors combine the methods: check on a regular date and act sooner if a band is breached. Whatever method you choose, apply it to the total portfolio covered by the policy, not just to one account or one fund.
| Approach | How it works | Main benefit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calendar | Review on a fixed schedule and trade when needed | Simple and behaviorally disciplined | Drift can remain until the next review |
| Threshold | Trade when an allocation moves outside a preset band | Responds to meaningful drift | Requires monitoring and a defined trigger |
| Calendar plus bands | Use scheduled reviews and act when a band is breached | Combines structure with drift control | More record-keeping and decisions |
Measure the actual drift
Use current market values, not the amount originally invested. Add the value of every holding in the policy, then calculate each asset class as a percentage of the total. Compare those percentages with the target and the trigger.
Look through funds and accounts
A fund’s name does not guarantee diversification. Identify the underlying exposure by asset class, sector, company and country. Two funds can hold many of the same companies, and a “balanced” label can conceal a large equity or sector concentration. Include cash positions and short-term instruments in the category your policy assigns to them.
Use the direction of the drift, not the market story
After a stock sell-off, stocks may be underweight while bonds or cash are overweight. After a strong rebound, stocks may become overweight. The same rule handles both cases. Do not assume that a headline about a crash tells you whether your portfolio needs a trade.
| Published example | What it demonstrates |
|---|---|
| 60% stocks becoming 80% stocks after market gains | A portfolio can drift materially toward the asset class that rose; rebalancing restores the chosen mix rather than rewarding the recent winner. |
| 80% stocks/20% bonds becoming 85% stocks/15% bonds | A five-percentage-point change can be a defined trigger when that is the investor’s written rule. |
| 70% stocks/30% bonds with a five-percentage-point trigger | Review when stocks move outside 65%–75% (and bonds outside the corresponding range). |
Use cash flows before selling
The least disruptive rebalance often starts with money that has not yet been invested. Direct new contributions to the underweight category. Send dividends, interest and scheduled withdrawals toward the target as well. This can correct part of the drift without realizing gains or paying an additional trading cost.

Choose between a full and partial rebalance
Full rebalance
A full rebalance trades enough to return every category to its exact target. It provides precision and makes the post-trade allocation easy to record. The cost can be higher taxes, spreads or commissions, especially in a taxable account.
Partial rebalance
A partial rebalance trades only the most overweight positions or moves the portfolio back inside the permitted band. It can reduce realized gains and transaction costs while restoring the intended risk range. You can finish the adjustment with future contributions and income.
In a taxable account, consider selling only what is necessary and selecting lots deliberately. A higher-cost-basis lot may create a smaller taxable gain than a low-cost-basis lot, but the correct choice depends on your tax situation and the role of that holding in the portfolio.
Taxable and tax-advantaged accounts require different checks
| Account type | What a rebalance can trigger | Practical approach |
|---|---|---|
| Taxable brokerage account | Realized capital gains or losses, plus trading costs; wash-sale rules can restrict a claimed loss | Use contributions and income first, select lots carefully and calculate the tax effect before selling |
| Tax-advantaged account | Internal trades generally do not create current capital-gains tax; withdrawals and distributions remain subject to account-specific rules | Use the account for trades that would otherwise create unnecessary taxable sales, while respecting its withdrawal rules |
Asset location can matter: if the same target can be reached in more than one account, you may be able to rebalance inside a tax-advantaged account and leave appreciated taxable positions untouched. Keep the overall portfolio target in view; do not distort risk simply to avoid a tax bill.
Check wash-sale rules before realizing a loss
IRS Publication 550 says a wash sale generally occurs when you sell a security at a loss and buy a substantially identical security within the 30 days before or after the sale. When the rule applies, the disallowed loss is generally added to the basis of the replacement security rather than deducted immediately.
Inspect purchases in every relevant account before placing the trade. That includes an IRA or Roth IRA and, where applicable, a spouse’s account. Automatic dividend reinvestment and recurring purchases can fall inside the window even when you did not intend to repurchase the security.

Records to keep
- Security name and identifier, sale date and number of shares.
- Purchase dates and cost basis for the lots you sell.
- All purchases of the same or substantially identical security during the 30-day-before and 30-day-after period.
- Replacement shares whose basis was increased because of a disallowed loss.
- Confirmation of the post-trade allocation and the next review date.
Publication 550 also states the usual $3,000 annual limit on the net capital-loss deduction for most individuals, with excess losses carried forward under the applicable rules. That limit does not make a loss sale automatically desirable; compare the tax value with the portfolio risk, replacement choice and wash-sale consequences. Individual treatment can be complex, so consult a tax professional for advice on your return.

- Pause and document the plan. Write the target percentages, account types, goal date, emergency-cash requirement and the calendar or tolerance-band rule. Do not infer a new target from one frightening trading session.
- Confirm whether circumstances changed. Reassess the target only if your time horizon, liabilities, income, cash needs or risk capacity and willingness changed.
- Calculate current weights. Add all included holdings, classify the underlying exposures and compare each percentage with the target and trigger.
- Check for concentration. Look through funds for overlapping companies, sectors, countries or asset classes so that the apparent rebalance does not leave an unintended concentration.
- Apply cash flows first. Redirect new contributions, dividends and interest to the underweight category where practical.
- Select the least disruptive trades. In taxable accounts, consider a partial rebalance and the lots that best fit your tax situation. In tax-advantaged accounts, confirm the account’s trading and distribution rules.
- Run the tax checks. Estimate realized gains and losses, review transaction costs and search all accounts for purchases in the wash-sale window before realizing a loss.
- Place only the required orders. Trade enough to restore the target or return inside the chosen band. Avoid adding an unplanned market forecast to the transaction.
- Record the result. Save the post-trade percentages, lots sold, basis, taxes considered and next review date.
What not to do during a sharp decline
Do not liquidate stocks merely to stop the discomfort
Investor.gov warns that selling all stock assets when the market is down can realize a significant loss and cause you to miss later gains. A move to cash can also create a new timing decision: when and at what price will you buy back? If your target has not changed, selling everything abandons the risk mix your plan was designed to maintain.
Do not buy more simply because prices look lower
A sell-off may create an opportunity to rebalance into an underweight asset, but the amount should come from the written allocation and your capacity to withstand further losses. Rebalancing is not a license to exceed the stock target.
Do not chase the latest winner
The 60%-to-80% stock example shows how performance can pull an allocation away from its intended risk level. Buying more of an asset solely because it recently rose reverses the discipline rebalancing is meant to provide.
Do not ignore taxes while focusing on percentages
An allocation can be mathematically correct and still produce an avoidable tax bill. Compare a cash-flow solution, a partial trade and a tax-advantaged-account trade before selling appreciated holdings.
Manual versus automated implementation
Manual rebalancing gives you control over the target, account selection, tax lots and timing. It also requires accurate calculations, records and periodic attention. An automated portfolio service can monitor drift and place trades according to its own thresholds, tax-lot method and trading schedule.

Before delegating the process, verify the provider’s registration, fiduciary status, total fees, geographic availability, account access, tax-loss-harvesting policy and wash-sale controls. Ask how it handles deposits, withdrawals, restricted securities and a target change. Automation cannot decide whether your goal or risk capacity has changed; that remains an investor decision.
How to handle common post-sell-off situations
Stocks are below the band, and your plan is unchanged
Direct new money and income to stocks first. If the band is breached, make the smallest tax-aware trade needed to return inside it or to the target. Keep enough emergency cash outside the investment policy.
Stocks are still inside the band
No trade is required solely because prices fell. Continue the scheduled monitoring and document that the allocation remains within the rule.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Your goal is closer or your income is less secure
Reassess the target before rebalancing. A revised allocation should reflect the new horizon and ability to absorb losses, not simply the fact that markets declined.
You have losses in a taxable account
Decide whether realizing a loss improves the portfolio and tax position. Check the 30-day wash-sale window across accounts, choose a replacement that is not substantially identical if appropriate, and retain the basis records.
You have appreciated positions and little new cash
Use dividends and future contributions, rebalance inside a tax-advantaged account when suitable, or sell only the most overweight lots. Compare the tax cost of a full correction with the risk of leaving the portfolio outside its permitted range.
Monitoring after the trade
Market prices can move again immediately, so a post-trade allocation is not a permanent result. Record the weights on the execution date and set the next calendar review or threshold alert. Recheck after a large contribution, withdrawal, distribution, account transfer or change in the underlying holdings of a fund.
